As a 90% bank fisherman, keeping plastics in their original packaging has been the best option for me because if I were to box them, the boxes would take up way too much room to store in a backpack.

Same but more 98% bank fishing I love the original packaging with few exceptions. It keeps the baits straight (for the most part) and organized.
Ditto for me. I do a bit of some small ziplocks for a few days (not mixing companies! Zman/10000 fish especially) to save even more space.
Just remember to throw away the package after it's empty. Tired of finding empty soft plastic packages at my local fishing holes. Not accusing you specifically, just stating my experiences.
I keep them in the original in a big art container cause it's an easy storage and separation and it's best for pulling out just a few packs to take around the pond with me. Half the time it's just pulling over real quick when I see a juicy pond and grab a pack or 2 of my go to softs and throwing them in my pocket
Thanks for another great video and always keeping them coming. For anyone who likes to keep swimbaits in the clamshells but prefers a soft case, the Plano 3600 speedbags fit them perfectly. You can organize them to all face the same direction (parallel to the zipper) and easily get right to what you want. Also, you can find matching replacement zipper pulls for the speedbags online in assorted colors so that you can easily know what’s inside without having to open them or writing on the bags, etc…. FWIW

I store mine in 3700 series boxes. Labeled nice & neat on the shelf with different varieties so I can grab & go. Never had an issue with dry baits. I got thru them too fast😬 thanks for the vid! Keep’um comin 👊

If I had a boat I would definitely go with those plano water tight boxes, cheaper then the edge box and smaller! But being the raggedy Ann bank angler, I use a back pack and a speed bag. I keep the clam shells in the top of my back pack and the assortment I think I'll be using that day in the speed bag, been the best so far for me. Great vid!!

This is how I have stored and carried soft plastics on my boat since your first video on this subject . IT WORKS ., and works GOOD . Some plastics don't play well together, (elastac) , keep them separated , and you'll have no problems .
I did the Plano waterproof boxes for years. Some plastics did warp the dividers and not just the removable kind and hazed up the inside of the lid. I went back to my old way of bagging them and then storing by types in binders. In the binders I include the terminal tackle I would need for them. So if I want to dropshot I grab that binder, etc. my spare and bulk are then stored in clear totes by type and some by color as well. But everyone is different and you need to find what works for you and your style of fishing.

TJ81, 100% agree on all fronts. I've been storing ALL my soft plastics (I don't use the elaztech crap) in regular Plano and Flambeau boxes with absolutely no issues for years. No drying out, no warping or kinks. I store all my swimbaits, drop shot baits, Ned baits, tubes, creature baits and jig trailers. I do use the speed bag for all my worms, but it's a pain as it's no where near as organized and efficient as the boxes. If you have the room in your boat and your house, there is no better way to store baits in season, and out of season, than the storage boxes. Thumbs up brotha!!

I also use 3700's for soft plastics as well as a few other optons, ( my boat does not have the greatest storage), and I'm pretty satisfied with having organized choices. On rare occasions I have had a single divider of baits appear to melt somewhat. I wish I paid better attention to which companies baits seemed most prone, but that hasn't happened in a while. Also you turned me onto Daiwa baitcasters and my wife is not happy, something keeps us from paying down that credit card amount at my local tackle shop. Daiwa Tatula 150 with the larger handle is the best baitcaster I've ever used and I've used some more expensive reels. Thank you. B

TJ I do both bags & boxes and both work great for me, living in South Florida were its hot as hell I have NEVER had any baits dry up and I am not using the good boxes with the seals so drying up is not the case, I always use some worm oil and I have no damage to the box with that, great vid

I buy pretty much all my soft plastics (most swim baits) in bulk so putting them in a Plano box is the only option for me. But I haven't had any issues. Love it!
I live way up north in Europe and I haven't felt any difference in elasticity in the baits during winter.

Excellent video! I’ve been Plano boxing all of my soft plastics for well over 20 years. Most of the earlier 3700’s weren’t water-tight but my baits always stayed just fine. With the newer boxes…even better. I enjoy rummaging through my soft plastics bags in the garage…NOT in the boat! Tight Lines! John

Here's a great tip. Once a year or maybe even every two years or more, put a little mineral oil on them and it'll keep them nice and soft and supple. I use an old paint brush to coat them lightly and it works fantastic. FYI, mineral oil is usually food grade and will not be toxic to the water. Also, be sure to not mix z-man plastic with other plastics. I forget which plastics react with which but it can cause a chemical reaction and they'll literally melt. Been there done that..

Elaztech has a bad tendency bleed/migrate plasticizer out to other materials. So it will react with just about all plastisol baits and some plastics bait boxes too (i have even seen it react with hard plastic clear coats and paints aswell). Zman pretty much suggests keeping the stuff isolated in their original packaging or in approved boxes. Generic plastisol though is pretty stable and should be fine in boxes.
Literally mixed my Zman big TRD with other baits and they melted so that’s why I’m here haha
yeah, my Z man totally melted lol. the rest are ok. mineral oil is the trick!!!
Color bleeding is the biggest issue I have had with boxing. If you are going to have to take the boxes in and out of a boat or if you are a co-angler or bank fisherman your baits will not stay in the divided sections you create in a old school Plano 2700 because you have to turn the boxes on their sides to put them in a lot of bags. Not to mention, I won’t put a plastic bait on my hook unless I have a full pack or more. The last thing I want to happen is to start catching fish on a soft plastic bait that I have 2 of. I realize that it’s not as much of an issue switching colors or swapping to a similar style as I make it. However, it’s a confidence thing sometimes.
The boxes work well for a swim baits if you can keep them perfectly flat like in your boat or just sitting in your garage. If you’re moving them around and have to put them in bags or in your car where they can shake rattle and roll then those swim-bait tails will absolutely bunch up to one side and get all kinked up. Keeping the baits in the original packages makes the most sense for some of us.
Great video bud! I store my boxes in all sorts of ways. If I have my ego bag, then it’s original packs. In the kayak, I’ll store a bunch in boxes - then if I feel like I’m missing something, I’ll toss a few extra bags in the crate. I always have way to much lol.

I think something you miss is why others do have the issues with ruined baits in plastic storage boxes. And that because not all boxes are created the same. Because not all boxes are solid tray dividers. If you have two different baits in a box with removable spacers separating the two, then you will have the chance of the oils of those baits especially if they get warm mixing and can ruin your baits. The divider between each bait should be a solid divider.

Another good idea I’ve found. On spark shad 3” I cut the clamshell into thirds and stacked them in the deep 3700 Plano. Wish I could send you a photo
I have a speed bag when I’m taking my softs and my sons. If I’m by myself I have a soft binder I load up and tether to my sling pack! When I get a boat I’ll probably adopt the box option

It is important to note that if you mix colors they will bleed into each other ruining the original color of the bait. Also sun/heat or UV ray exposure over and over can also compromise the integrity of a plastic bait but this requires regular and long exposure to the sun. Finally not all plastics are made of the exact same compounds, some include salt and depending on whether they are packed in oil and what kind of oil that is, can all influence soft plastics. However, if you only buy brand name stuff or stick to a specific kind or type of bait you may never experience the above mentioned. Personally I have experienced both ruined baits and baits that can take anything you throw at them and still hold up. Certain variables will equate different results, I would recommend if you are storing them in boxes (which I also do) keep them out of the sun for prolonged periods of time.
I’m like you, I store some in speeds bags and some in boxes. Speed bags for the pond/ bank bag generally and a combination of both for the boat. 💯👊

I run a small bait making business and pour all my own baits..to include swimbaits. I use boxes for all of them...Small trick if you dont know or your viewers...if they start warping, boil some water and get a good rolling boil, cut the heat down to low and drop your soft plastics in for 8-10 sec and pull out...lay them straight for 30 seconds and they are perfect again. Does not mess with the integrity of the bait.

Yes you always want to preserve that Scent and Taste for the soft plastics, a fishes strongest sense is smell only second to taste so adding salt if they are loose is a good addition and actually absorbs moisture to just sprinkle it on before you close the lid. There are comparison videos the amazing William Dance did in the 80’s when they started adding Salt to Lures. Cool Video my Friend stay safe

So I been thinking about star boxing my sof plastics as well, but with your experience, what about the smell and flavor of the baits? Would they mix and end up all smelling the same? I have a tracker so storage is no great so boxes will have to go in straight up in the storage compartm for faster and easy reach. Putting the boxes flat in the compartm is not ideal since I would have to take boxes put to reach for a specific box. That is my only concern the mix of flavors..
I keep them in their original packages, partly because I dont know the difference between brands. I have them in containers and when I go out I just pull out the bags I want. I get one small closet for everything. Great video.

I love that idea. I store my senko style worms in a 3600 box. It is hard to do all soft plastics cause I bank and kayak fish. What's your opinion on using the plano edge 3600 and 3700 boxes not those other plano boxes
I personally haven't used the Edge boxes for plastics, but I believe I seen the guys on Tactical Bassin using them for plastics.

I've always wanted to do this because as a bank angler it'd be easier for me to just load up one box with a small variety of plastics for the day and have everything visible and more easily accessible than having to dig through the bait bag I use now and open individual packs, deal with clamshells, etc. But at one point a long time ago I did keep plastics in a regular Plano and it did warp the walls and dividers and stained the plastic so I've been leery about trying it again. I do imagine that the waterproof box like you have would make a difference so I'll have to give it a shot. With all of the advancements in tackle storage technology these days you'd think some company would develop a box specifically designed for storing out of package soft plastics.

I have a Bass Tracker 175 TF and use Plano 3601 slim boxes to store my hard baits and terminal tackle and then for the soft plastics I keep them in their original bags and place the bags into 1 gallon Ziploc freezer bags by type and color. For swim baits I take them out of the clam shells and into 1 quart Ziploc's and then into the larger Ziploc's.
Sounds like a great system as well.

I agree with you that i have never experienced anything wrong w plano boxes other than melting because i left it in my truck. I have tried the bags and they work when I can pull out the baits and lay on the deck of the boat and see what i want to throw. When in my kayak that doesnt work so i use the 3700 waterproof for all my soft plastics other than swimbaits. Maybe plano would make an 3700 edge box for soft plastics...anyway just my thoughts.

You mean they have scent on them? You can box them and to be honest another reason I prefer the Plano waterproof boxes is because the scent doesn't leak out.
I have five Bass Mafia bags full. I took all the partial bags and combined. I took clamshells out and used quart freezer ziplocks. I filled a kitchen garbage can with bags o got rid of. Saved me tons of space and let me remember all the baits I have and forgot.

Some plastics have oils or
Minerals on them and react on the box. Megabass will dry out and some jdm will dry out or crust out . Some glow in dark baits will melt the plano boxes .
I end up with a little of everything in all my storage. I am so disorganized 😐

i keep all my soft plastics in original packaging and just have them in a plastic bag. one time i had a zman in one of those style boxes you use and left it outside in the sun for like 15 minutes. it does get crazy hot here in so cal. and that thing was melted into all the other shit that was in that cubby in the box. im guessing it depends which plastics and if your area gets super hot and if you leave those out or not. i never had roboworms or senkos or zooms melt though. just the zman.
Yup, Zman or that type of plastic keep in the original packages.
Do you stack the Planos upright or flat in the boat and does it matter?
Upright, which is what makes the dividers bow because of the weight of the plastic sitting on them.

I started storing mine in my plastic boxes, I hate having all the loose bags, it takes up too much space in my pack. No issues so far. I keep my tackle in the house and out of the weather when not fishing.

I made my first soft plastic box just the other day for ned rigs. It's so much better at least for these things. I used the plano edge box. As I'm typing this you say no elaztec!? Why no elaztec?
That type of plastic will react with the boxes and other soft plastics as well...they'll melt. Keep them in the original packages.
My 2 inch worms from china dissolved in the mix bag with fish scent and a bunch of other worms. I thought it was the jig heads that were painted with nail paint, but they also turn to pieces in my other bag so i wasn't sure, good thing the rest were ok...

Years ago I had an old tiered tacking bow with thin plastic inserts. My soft baits would stick to the plastic and ruin both. Perhaps it's the type of plastic?
Yup, I believe years ago those boxes were made out of a different material that reacted with the soft plastics.
Are the boxes you have in the video the deeper 3700 or the shallower 3740?

I've seen a few guys use Edge boxes for plastics, but I personally have not.

My boxes are not waterproof and some baits have been in there for 2-3 years without drying out Have a couple baits on the floor of my boat all year and it’s not dried out. Sun bleached lol

The ones that got ruined are the baits that sit in a liquid. They dry out in the plastic box.
See. The thing I've definitely experienced is that most soft plastics have a softener/stabilizer in them that will also warp the boxes over time so if I did store them in boxes it would just be cheap boxes
Never seen that unless it's the zman elastech, standard soft plastics keep just fine in Plano boxes.

Ruins your baits or ruins your boxes? Some people talk and some people do. I have some soft baits I have had in boxes for 30 years (I mean the same box and the same baits) with absolutely ZERO damage. If your box is the wrong material, there will be a reaction. My boxes are made for soft baits. There has been a little color fade but that's it for 'damage'. I probably need to fish more and use those old baits.
Guys are saying both, but I haven't had either issue.
Idk if down here in SWFL they would hold up with the heat. Might end up with 1 huge soft plastic of each kind. Lol 🎣🇺🇸🎣

I thought the clamshell was to protect the shape of the swimbait? If if the shape is changed, can you imagine sorting all those swimbaits and then having to boil and dry them to try to bring back their original shape?
I just leave them in original packs and put what I am going to use in a gallon ziplock bag. Don’t have a lot of room in kayak.

I put Zman soft plastics in a plano edge 3700 box and it warped the grey dividing walls... Completely destroyed my box
Yup, keep that type of plastics in original packages.
Ppl aren't lying to you man- it's all about heat, and what brand of box/plastic you're dealing with. The problem that ppl run into is that all plastics use catalysts of various types- usually added to cause the plastic to harden to varying degrees. Many of these catalysts are heat activated- so many times you can put two plastics together and they're fine- until you leave them in the truck that one day when it got up to 100 degrees- the catalysts are activated- and the plastics deform. Or- the specific recipe for one brand of plastic may have a bad reaction when placed with another plastic due to residual chemicals reacting to form new compounds- once again the initial energy needed to instigate these reactions is usually supplied by heat. Most crankbaits are filled with a foam that expands per how much catalyst is used and how long it's heated just enough to fill the outside shell- if left in the heat the catalyst will reactivate and the foam will start to expand more- eventually spitting the shell right down the seam usually- along the back of the bait. It's all about where you store your stuff- temperature is very important.

I think were the issue is that if your boat sits outside you will have the problem. I can personally attest to that. But if you boat stays in a garage or something you won’t have that bug of an issue.

Years ago I had Rage Craws boxed and didn't have any issues. When I load boxes I try to load the baits in a way where they lay straight as possible.
Do you put your boxes in sideways? Or flat?

Certain baits should stay in the packages though. Like Berkeley gulp, zoom frog - not the horny toad, and tbe sikoshi bug
Agreed, that's why I made sure to mention I don't do this with elaztech type baits like Zman.
