Wow, you really just pointed out how great George Newbern was at voicing Sephiroth by comparing him to Tyler Hoechlin. I miss deep-voiced Sephiroth. You knew when he spoke that somebody was about to die even if it wasn't you. My favorite line was "Good to see you...Cloud." That really was a chilling moment on the first watch.
I’m not sure if you’ve heard of AI but when it comes to other video games like the yakuza franchise, they use AI of the original voice actor who played Kazuma Kiriyu I wish they can use AI and use the original actors voice like Steve Burton, George Newberg, and especially Rick Gomez to voice the characters just to see what it actually sounds like that would be cool

I can’t full describe what I love about Newbern’s voice. Maybe it’s Authenticity? Newbern as both Sephiroth and Superman just sounds so real to me. As Sephiroth it never feels like he’s TRYING to sound dark or menacing at any point. It never feels like he doesn’t have control. With Tyler, it’s not that it’s bad. But it does feel like he’s trying to be what Sephiroth is, like he’s saying “I’m dark….”.

I think I can describe it. Newbern's interpretation really fleshed out Sephiroth in a lot of ways. When you hear his voice it's withdrawn and foreboding, yet it's charismatic and charming. It really does cover all aspects of Sephiroth in regards to how he can be sophisticated yet awkward and friendly (in Crisis Core prior to him going nuts), but there's also the menacing and cruel aspect that is also there. With Newbern he was able to articulate all of Sephiroth's range of emotions from him being calm and gentle, to angry and vicious without really altering Sephiroth's voice all that much as he's mainly monotone. But there's also a bit of mysteriousness to his voice to, it's like you can't necessarily know what he's thinking or how he truly feels, which kinda fits into the original game as Sephiroth was such a huge mystery everyone was trying to figure out. And of course his voice is for lack of better words sexy. It's alluring to draw you in by his charm, but it's also enough one to give you the fear of God as he stalks you like you're fresh prey.
Sephiroth's voice was by-far the most jarring change to the whole series. I'm relieved to hear the community feels strongly about this change in voice direction!

I love Tyler's Sephiroth. It has that same deep sound while also being very smooth. It's the perfect English voice for sephiroth.

I was already enthralled as a Sephiroth fanatic by the time of kh2/ AC. George's voice was the defining moment and became the "That's the voice that makes me question my own sexuality." It was perfect, tone, delivery, the way it sounded like Sephiroth carried himself. The confidence, the authority, I definitely feel the Tyler voice is off, and doesn't have the charm, confidence and gravitas George did. Happy after all this time, since AC that I was recently able to finally meet the man, who voices my childhood hero, and man crush.
I honestly don’t think Tyler’s voice is that bad. I think the more youthful sound makes him a bit more sympathetic, which is appropriate for a post crisis core story. Not too much though, as he still has that cold and unfeeling touch to it. The breathiness is a bit much at times I’ll admit, but I think the unflinching confidence can read as a bit cartoonish, especially with the more emotionally grounded direction video games have moved in recently. It’s just a bit more naturalistic, instead of sounding like someone who’s doing a performance. I look forward to his performance in rebirth
I just can't help but think that a lot of the discourse about the voice acting may be due to the actual sound recording equipment of the 2000s compared to now. The older voices seem to be deeper and more full-bodied, but I honestly believe there's some noise interference and equalizing that's making a difference. The more soft spoken characters, like Cloud and Aerith sound similar. Sure that could be due to their voice acting and direction. The actors surely aren't told to duplicate the performance of previous actors, right?
I just feel like there's some media differences, combined with nostalgic memories and the polygonal graphics, that makes the perception of these characters different. It's a hard thing to describe and articulate, I guess I just don't mind the new Sephiroth voice lol
I believe Aerith changed quite often, so that could be interesting to have a look back onto?

I quite love the new voice actor while appreciating what the old voice actor did for the character. I don't think George Newbern voice is necessarily that deeper than Tyler in voice. I find this video incredibly bias here.
I know cloud is going to keep his remake voice but with sephiroth keep his remake voice? I wish he would i really liked it
Great video but agree to disagree. I really don't hear how Tyler sounds young or even immature. George is arguably better and definitely deeper, but Tyler is doing great and still feels like Sephiroth for sure.
