I really loved Leo’s character arc in the Rise movie. Nothing like an alien apocalypse and having your older brother captured, mutated (again), and mind-controlled to get you to grow up quick and step into the role of leader.

@@TheUnseenPath Having him be younger than Raph allowed him to be more carefree and have that room for character development. And it would make sense that the oldest would be the leader, but they hinted a few times in the show that Leo would actually make a better leader but didn’t have the sense of responsibility for it. I kind of liked seeing the evolution from reckless teen to courageous leader.

@@TheUnseenPath they in fact couldn't have, because the big thing that triggers is change is that raph is always there to bail him out when he fucks up, and in the movie, to bail him out raph gets captured and mutated, and now he is not there with him he has to take responsibilities for his action and start using his abilities with the team, instead by himself. If he already was the leader or the elder brother then there would not be any real role where he should step up to.

The 2012-2017 turtles was my favorite adaptation and interpretation of the characters. Leo is the leader, but he's also a teenager. A lot of the past series made Leo either too dumb or too mature to be a teenager. Leonardo is intelligent, but even he makes mistakes, whether they be strategic or emotionally driven decisions. He's not always confident or sure about his choices, and while that may not be a good trait in a leader, it also shows that Leonardo is a teenager and young, he's not always going to have all the answers and needs guidance, like everyone at that stage in their life.

Exactly this is what I liked about him. Usually the other universes forgot about them being teenagers but 2012-2017 did it so well. Leo has his path but he struggles and is insecure. 2003 Leonardo is my ride or die. I've always been drawn to leader characters, they usually aren't as flashy or extreme as the other characters, but I always respect how responsible and noble they are.
And the best moments are always when the leader gets an awesome scene where they show you why they deserve to be the leader, when they do something so unbelievably noble and/or epic that you can't help but think "yeah, that's why he's in charge!"

The 2003 and 2012 versions of Leo are my favorite interpretations of the character. In the 03 series, Leo is definitely the top turtle, but is very hard on himself, especially after getting ambushed by the foot and nearly losing his and his family's lives in the season 3 finale. When he loses, self doubt hits him hard, but has to learn to not be his own worst enemy.
The 2012 version is just as good, maybe better, he is naive, very unsure of himself, and a fantasy geek, it was a real treat watching him grow into a capable leader emotionally, and spiritually, yet still maintain his quirks and boyish charm .In my opinion , future versions of leonardo should take more after the 2012 version, in which he is a capable leader and warrior, but still naive and quirky

Leo was always my absolute favourite turtle because I could always relate to him, even before I knew what "relate" means...
Just like him I'm an eldest child, having to be in control of my emotions, take care of my younger brother, always be the responsible/reasonable one, be an emotional crutch to a parent with a complicated past. The versions of 2003 and 2018 strike a strong cord in particular.
2003 version reminds me of the mask I wore for years, the in control, overly mature, cynical and reasonable child/teen and 2018 version is like looking into a mirror of the present me, for the better and for the worst. I crack stupid jokes to cope with stress, I relay solely on myself (even when it is stupid and self-destructive) I can smooth talk and trick my way out of most situations but it sometimes (often) comes at the cost of being dishonest. It's more of a reflex and a coping/pacifying mechanism than anything and I'm working on it with a therapist.
Leonardo is so much more than just "the leader". He is an incarnation/illustration of an emotionally abandoned person who had to learn all too soon and very quickly how to fend for themselves. He is all of us children who had to be more mature and reliable than our parents. All of us who cling onto the idea of "what am I worth if I can't protect/serve the people I love?" He is all of us who love so strongly and are loyal to a fault yet keep others at a distance to avoid further pain. Leonardo is the "sacrificed one", wether by choice or forced by circumstances. With such a life and experiences comes great strength but it comes at a high cost.
Leo is a cruelly underrated demonstration of the results of emotional trauma and abandonment, in all the good noble strength and the bad, self-destructive behaviours that come with it.

He always feel like that one awkward anti social sibling who play on their computer and never leaves their room. But in the rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles and 2012 teenagers mutant ninja turtles. Ooooo they give Donnie one hell of a personality in 2012, he sassy, kinda of a smart ass, has a bit of a temper (not as but as Raph), awkward and a bit silly. Between 2003 and RoTTMNT, I’m torn, because both are far deeper than they appear. In the 2003 series, they play with his character by hyping him up only to get him knocked down hard. In RoTTMNT, it feels like he’s a culmination of previous Leos given that the show has little callbacks to its predecessors and subtle cues from them too, while still feeling entirely fresh given that Leo’s able to express anxiety and compensative nature of a teen trying to make it in a house of-not only weirdos-but people who are just trying to be happy and keep getting pulled into dangerous situations.
In 2003, the boys go looking for trouble and Leo leads the charge only to pay for that behavior, eventually becoming downright sick of their constant battling with a reoccurring enemy. In RoTTMNT, trouble finds them as much as they go looking for it, and Leo’s trying to handle it in a way not unusual for someone who still has some growing up to do.
The 2007 CGI show’s good, yet Leo’s wincest romance with Kurai…yeah, I’ll pass on that since it’s essential to his plot. Donnie being into April and Leo being into Kurai (GETTING STABBED IN THE BACK REPEATEDLY BY HER TOO)….that’s understandable for teenagers buuuuuuuut it really struck me as weird and kinda icky given that it really didn’t need to happen. If you replace Donnie’s crush with simply being closer to April than his brothers, and Leo simply able to relate to Kurai on the fact that they’re both badasses, it feels like you don’t lose very much. To me, at least. I could be entirely wrong.
Also, Micheal Bay’s pair of films just didn’t do it for me and the costumed films are something I go to to get giddy about the special effects more than Leo’s character.

It’s not necessarily that he has no desire to lead, it’s that he doesn’t think he’s good enough to lead. Plus for the first time he’s not implied to be the oldest brother, he’s an angsty emotional 14 year old with clear mental health issues whose doing his best to hide it. Favorite turtle, same but 2012 is my all time favorite. I feel like 2018 had what it took to be leader but still needed to grown up and get over himself and his self esteem issues. Not my fav but he grew on me can’t lie there

A fun character quirk for Leo that pops up a few times is that Leo is a nerd for swords. In TMNT 3 he gets given a book of historical swords by April, and he’s super into it. In the 2003 show he nerds out over an electric katana. In rise he’s CONSTANTLY holding his odachi (which is super relatable tbh. If I had a big badass magic sword I’d be carrying it around all the time aswell) and it’s rarely holstered, unlike his brothers (except maybe Donnie). Im sure there are other examples of Leo being excited about swords, but these are the ones that first come to mind.

So happy you made this video, I am a huge ninja turtles fan.
I don’t know why you didn’t include any of the comic versions, but I can’t complain much.
As for who else I’d like you to analysis from the turtle franchise, maybe Shredder or Splinter. I feel like they’re the characters that tend to have the most changes applied to them. And I think that tends to have far-reaching consequences for everybody else and the universe in general.
Either way super entertained and if you’re going to do Scooby Doo characters, that would make me very very happy.

Just as I was getting back into TMNT this drops. I saw the 90s live action movie once and immediately loved Raph (best turtles hands down), saw the 2012 one and adored Mikey, eventually liking Donatello too. It took a while for me to warm up to Leo, but his role as leader matters. It's a shame his personality usually takes a backseat to it though. Unlike with a character like Robin from Teen Titans who has a set personality and a fitting role, synching both up with Leo can be very hit or miss.

As someone who grew up on 2012, Rise Leo will forever be superior in every way for me. I kinda hated him in 2012 (which is about 90% CJtheStoryteller's fault, if you know you know) and Rise Leo is just... he's SO well characterized, espECIALLY in the movie. I also heavily relate to him in a way I never have with any other Leo. He's flawed, he's funny, and he's a kid in a weird situation. Love that character.
