    If All-Stars was supposed to be the season where Duncan realized his own faults and learnt to accept all of him, the good and the bad, then what the heck was that ending?? There are many things wrong with All-Stars as well as a lot of mispotential. The second they introduced the "Duncan knew Mal from Juvie", things could've gotten SO much more interesting and yet they didn't. Heck, one way to have this "Duncan finally accepts who he is" plotline is by having him attempt to expose Mal in his usual Duncan way, but Mal is over here playing 5D chess and gets him eliminated. Idk, something like that. Anything is an improvement over his actual final moments

      Instead they gave that subplot to Alejandro, and although it was interesting seeing that bad vs evil dynamic, it would’ve been cooler to see Duncan accept his natural sense or morality and go farther in the competition as a sort of anti hero opposing Mal. I still like the finals coming down to Zoey and Mike but a more heroic Duncan make the final 3 or 4 would’ve been cool.

      Tbh, I often hate love triangles, they’re overdone and if not done perfectly and interestingly, it’s so frustrating, I wish more shows would introduce a couple, and just let them be a couple, they’d have ups and downs and probably very cute dates or something but often when I’m watching shows that rely too heavily on will they won’t they on and off couples, I just get frustrated and bored with the characters, I’ve had this problem with loads of shows and hated characters for no reason other than being part of an annoying love triangle (For example, I was NOT a fan of Piz from Veronica Mars because the love triangle he was in had already spent many seasons being on-and-off before he got here and I just wanted rid of the drama and to just get the couple, or not get it and have them agree, and stay that way, to just be buds) I also really liked Duncan and Courtney in season one and really thought they deserved better

  • @12DAMDO
    @12DAMDO Před 2 lety +181

    the real problem is the very concept of villains vs heroes, especially when it's done with realistic characters because in reallife there are no _true_ villains or heroes.. so in other words, to call him a villain just because he's edgy would be profiling him... and that's pretty much where the first step in his character development/downward spiral started, with the question "what does it mean to be a villain in real life?"
    and then he ended up doing something illegal because he's a desperate teen searching for a personality trait instead of just allowing himself to be himself..

    Can we mention of the big impact that Duncan made world tour as well?
    He started off quitting the game, leaving as he's never heard again, coming back coincidentally thanks to Courtney and Gwen, not only leading Team Chris to lose and Noah's elimination but creating the most controversial moment of the whole series.
    he made the game more tense and easier to play for Alejandro, as he gain alliances with Duncan and Courtney, which the most difficult people to convince knowing how smart and strategical those two can be, he's either hated or being taken as a important role in the season.

    Duncan is exactly who I would never want a relationship with. Even if he does act slightly better around certain people, he only manages to bring out the worst in everyone he gets too close to. The fact that he craves anger and dysfunction in a mate and still feels entitled to blow off steam with someone else when it gets too much is beyond hypocritical. It's my belief that he only pursued Gwen to get a breather from Courtney, and once things got too easy and non-threatening with Gwen, he still expected Courtney to worship the ground he walked in and for Gwen to act like it was nothing. I get that Courtney's treatment of him even before he kissed Gwen was atrocious, but the fact that he even wanted to crawl back to her despite everything shows how dense he really is with his own relationships.

    Many people are upset about what they did to Duncan in TDAS, but what I really hate its the ending. Instead of developing a rivalry with Mal or accept the fact than he screw up his relationships, he decided than he has to proof he is a bad boy and blow up Chris house. This could have worked if it was the bad ending Chris gets at the end of the season, but they decided to trough real world logic and sent Duncan to jail.
    I don't know if you are aware of this, but Duncan seems to be a writers pet. The same can be said about Owen and Zoey (in All Stars, not ROTI). But while the writers herd the complains people had about Owen and tried to fix it in WT and RR, with Duncan, I don't know what they were thinking with that ending. He already won a season, if we count his cameo in ROTI, he has been in EVERY MERGE EPISODE in the first 5 seasons. If he wasn't going to receive satisfying character development, why did he had that amount of screen time.

He was my favorite character in season 1, and while he became sort of a comedic-punching-bag as the story goes on, he is still one of the characters that always make things interesting (like Heather!)
    Amazing analysis, you are so right in that Duncan has self-image/perception issues he has to work on. That makes him a very relatable character in my opinion.

    I honestly admire All-Stars for its willingness to stick to its guns in giving all the characters logical ends to their arcs. This goes for the nice, happy ones (Mike and Zoe's relationship getting stronger, Cameron becoming even more sociable, Gwen getting to move on from the drama), the neutral ones (Lindsay just noping out of it because there's nothing for her any more, Lightning having a fairly anticlimactic end since the issues with the pressure to win were resolved in ROTI, Scott having a normal ending after he changed his behaviour following his mauling) and even the negative outcomes (Duncan not accepting himself, Courtney repeating the cycles in her relationships and losing it all, Alejandro letting his pride and greed come before learning anything from his experience thus being on the brink of losing Heather as Fang comes after him). It makes it a really cool thing to watch. Plus the season is fun in general.

    Me personally if I was Duncan, I would’ve stoped competing in all future seasons after S2. One reason I say that is because he had already won a million bucks. Another reason why Duncan shouldn’t have returned after S2 is because he was dealing with a toxic relationship and it just got worse and worse over time especially when he got brought back in the middle of S3. And lord have mercy let’s not even get started on the love triangle. I think by him staying away from the game after S2 would’ve helped him mentally and taken away some stress. Oh, and let’s not forget that in all stars, he actually got put in jail ! Let me be clear he did blow up the mansion but had he stop competing after S2, that wouldn’t have happened. To the die hard Duncan fans reading this, y’all probably saying “wtf, then in that case he wouldn’t have as much screen time !” While indeed that is true, do y’all wanna see your guy/icon suffer through more drama and stress beyond S2 when he already won the million ? According to Sierra of episode 2 in that season she hasn't seen Alejandro do anything to earn his position in knowing any strategic knowledge of the total drama series or something to that effect. Duncan is viewed as the loud and proud toxic bad boy that women would deal with and entertain, whilst Noah is deemed the weird nerdy loser that many would call and “incel” in our generation. Women sometimes put certain conditions on how to react to men being sexist depending on who the man in question is and his characteristics. Duncan kind of reminds me of Dallas Winston from the Outsiders, if anyone has read that book.
    They were both jailed at a young age from their crimes, and constantly tried to maintain a bad boy image because of their status with the world and their inability to accept who they are. In Duncan's case, he constantly tries to hit on girls and put others down to make him feel like he fits his image, but he ends up learning how those relationships work himself and what could possibly make things for him better, thus tries to be genuine with how he feels about Gwen (At least in World Tour, AllStars kind of screwed that intention) and no I don't really count Courtney as someone he's 'genuine' with, she was never offering him a healthy relationship. But like you said, his failure to accept who he is arrested him. And in Dally's case, he distanced himself from everyone and tried to make the image that he hates everyone and constantly curses people out and threatens them with violence, but like Duncan, he does have a side to him that wants to be soft and endearing, where Dally becomes the only person willing to help Ponyboy and Johnny when they kill someone out of self defense and are on the run. Johnny is the only person Dally cares about, and he sees him as the brother he wish he had to make him a better person. but SPOILERS: Johnny ends up dying to a fire, and unable to comprehend with the loss of the one person who believed in him, Dally loses his edge, and returns to his crimes, an action similar to what Duncan did, but in Dally's case, the police downright killed him.
    Seriously, I don't know if you read it, the Outsiders is one of my favorite books I read in middle school, it's really good.

      OMG I never thought of this but it makes perfect sense! Great comparison! And the fact that contributes more to Dally losing his edge like Duncan is Dally wanted to die. I feel like Duncan straight up betrays whatever morals or neutrality he had before because of his arrogance, pride or value he places on social status. But with Dally it was more so him not being able to cope with his two interchanging personalities. He loved Johnny more that anything, but the mask/bad boy persona he built and how people perceived him did not align or allow him to be the way her was feeling (vulnerable, distraught, scared)
      In addition to this, Johnny held whatever remained of Dally’s true self. He was one of the only people to witness it, so Dally chooses death because his conflicting emotions were too much to handle. He would have rather joined Johnny.

    I think at this point my main gripe really is just how it all ended with Duncan. Like, it does make sense but for one thing I think Duncan and Gwen's relationship actually was kinda working as it started to develop in season 2 and there was kind of this vibe of Duncan showing he could be capable of good. I also personally just like a good redemption arc/bad person becoming good and Duncan was kinda on that path. I'm not gonna say Duncan getting a proper arc and ending up with Gwen is BETTER, but I'd be lying if I said that isn't what I wish had happened

      @@greenrangeralex I used to really like her when I was younger but after the stupid love triangle I was kind of just really frustrated with her lol, but after rewatching the series I'd say she was annoying from the start (just my opinion honestly I don't really have a reason for being annoyed with her.) but yes I think she started to become actually unlikeable in season 2 after she broke up with Trent and stuff, season 3 is just a whole other story, but I wouldn't call her a villain since she never did anything actually evil.

    They ruined his character at the beginning of season 3, the original Duncan would NEVER do that do Courtney after he adored her so much, he cares about people emotions, he wouldn't keep filtring with Gwen in front of Courtney without any regrets, that's not Duncan sorry

    His character crippled away when the writers kept beating him up in World Tour... he just didn't seem as tough; although he was still entertaining to watch since he still had the same personality. But in All Stars the writers made him a lot less carefree, which was what MADE Duncan so cool. This is also what happened to Gwen in season 2. Gwen started to care too much about what her team and boyfriend thought of her and then in World Tour when she and Duncan cheated and she just pretended to feel guilty

    Yeah, the Worf effect is one of the worst character tropes to exist, including its use with Duncan. However, I did actually like the idea of him losing his edge as a storyline. In a season with more episodes and actual decent writing, it could have been really good. His relationship with Gwen was terrible though, no matter what.
    Still in my top 3 favorite characters though.

    • @rnagrump6069
      @rnagrump6069 Před 2 lety

      Ugghh I hate the effect too with a passion. I always liked the idea that he was a pretty intimidating dude. As much entertain I was seeing him get punched when he deserves it, espicllaly by Harold, it overall makes him seem less tough in my eyes somehow getting knocked out by characters way weaker than him. I mean they could at least get him back in smarter ways showing their smarts like Harold and Cody. My hate for it obsiovuly goes with other characters, it just seem like a lazy way to look tough and undermining other skills other than strength that can also be used to make the characters look cool and tough to beat. I also disliked that he had to state many times that he's a bad boy when doing that really shows the opposite. I don't remember him being like that in the first season other than disliking showing his softer side. Though I still find the derailment to prove hes bad kind of entertaining and intersting, but it definatly destroys any hint of him being a badass delinquent but it could have been handled better

    idk how i missed the part where duncan comes from a cop family, but that explains basically Everything.
    the misogyny (hope his mom is ok)
    the code of honor and intense loyalty
    and his stubborn desire to be seen as "bad",, his actions like bullying harold are assholeish but there's plenty of good and lovable prankster characters in tv and film who could easily be framed as bullies. especially considering the "crimes" they bring up in the clip with his parents are pretty tame, the only reason he gets the bad boy label is bc he's unlawful. duncan today would have an ACAB patch on his crusty wristband but still mansplain manipulate gatekeep his way through relationships.
