The Worst Show On TV Gets Even Worse - Mr. Birchum Episode 2/3 Review

  • I'm back, and this time I'll be looking at the next two episodes of Mr. Birchum, and they are somehow even more terrible than my last video. Apologies for the footage looking weird in the first half of the video, I'm having some issues with keeping the video uploaded despite the fact that all clips are being used in accordance with fair use. Today, Mr. Birchum breaks more school codes and engages in some of the least funny sitcom plotlines I've literally ever seen.
The show is the brainchild of Ben Shapiro and Adam Carolla and stars a variety of minor celebrities and celebrities you wish had said no, including Roseanne Barr, Patrick Warburton, Danny Trejo.

I know I'm not the first to point this out, but I absolutely cannot stand conservatives' empty reverence for war veterans.
About ten years ago, i worked in a restaurant in Arizona. Met a guy in a wheelchair wearing one of those Navy veteran ship hats. Like, which boat you were on. Guy served in the Vietnam boondoggle aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. I went over to his table, we chatted about the history, the specs, some of his experiences. After cautiously asking about his obvious health issues, he told me he'd been exposed to agent orange.
I was aghast but unsurprised when he told me that more than half the serious exposure cases didn't get any payout or federal aid because they were exposed while decanting or deploying it; when the government finally acknowledged that AO was a Big Problem, they swept the Navy guys who transported and handled it under the rug. If it wasn't dropped on you in Vietnam, you just couldn't possibly have been exposed.
He told me he only wore the hat out of respect for his ship and crew, and that he started to resent anyone who thanked him for his service while a defoliant ate him alive and he lived in poverty.
    He's almost certainly dead now.
I feel like Adam Corolla hasn't had a single honest conversation with anyone who actually went to war.

I feel like this show doesn’t even work on its own terms. Like, are conservatives delighted by this? I would assume most conservatives like shows like Family Guy or whatever because they’re funny, and maybe overlook some of the politics. Whereas this show presumes the politics matters more than the humor, and I just feel like there’s not a lot of market evidence to suggest a show that’s not entertaining can be saved by its politics. I think it’s actually the other way around.
But this is also kind of a revelation of how conservative big shots assume the media works. They assume that liberal audiences like “liberal” shows because they’re full of liberal propaganda so conservative audiences will surely like a reverse-engineered version of this concept. But again, that just seems like a fundamental misread of what both left AND right wing viewers want from a show, especially a comedy show.

I also thought Mr. Bircham would not like the play being about two gay guys in love. The Daily Wire always makes such a big deal if school students are exposed to gay relationships, but Bircham doesn’t care to “make a stand” against this?

So as a veteran i find the premise of this episode quite insulting and tone deaf. Especially when you compare it to a show like King of the Hill. America has a wierd relationship with veterans, they are appreciated, but quickly forgotten. No small amount of vets suffer feom alcohol addiction, tobacco addiction. PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, and suicide rates are incredibly high, for a conservative leaninf show, you would still think you would want to talk about this in a meaningful way, rather than just...hey our troops are just teying to get free stuff and drink on veterans day. Sure maybe MR. Bircham had a good time in service, but a vast majority of veterans have some chronic illness...a show like this seems to only want to target the left. But does so by completely ignoring a lot of systemic issues and tragedies that face the men and women of service. Also again...do they not realize the irony of a navy boy liking wood... seriously who wrote this show?

Speaking about rants. I am starting to think the main character is Adam carols himself. I heard that TMZ record adam taking his childern to a restaurant during COVID and they denied him service. Adam than went on a rant at the restaurant and they removed him. Worst of all his kids were there.
So when the girl said nice rant, Adam wants his kids to support his rants even if it humiliated them.

I was actually a pretty big Adam Carolla fan since Loveline. I followed him to his podcast, I went to see him live, bought his 1st book, bought his 1st movie "The Hammer". After a while, I got sick of his conservative lean. My final days of being hia fan was when he gave Ted Cruz the softest interview, and then tried to excuse Dylann Roof's mass murder. It pains me to no end that he is still living in the late 90s/early 2000s...

13:29 what's wrong here is that craftsman LOVE to get oddly specific (and well defined) requirements on their work.
This should lead to a scene like: "Mr. Birchram, why are you here on the weekend?" "Your stupid guidelines said the ramp incline needed to be 10 degrees shallower, so I redid the ramp landing to make room." "Wow, thanks." "Stow it, that kid should lift more weights."

All in the Family & King of the Hill already did a conservative sitcom except for the fact they did it right & those shows were actually funny
I guess the creators saw those shows saw Archie Bunker & Hank Hill and got an idea for a character of their own. Except instead of making an interesting & flawed character they decided to make Mr. Birchum is always right & have nearly everyone agree with him except for the liberal teacher.
The worst part is a show like this could work. Have it be about 2 teachers. 1 be extreme right & 1 extreme left. Like comically extreme. Have them hate each other & constantly butting heads, but they actually care about the kids.
Like Rome & Rome play. Have Mr. Birchum want to do it exactly as written & the other teacher his idea. They make everyone around them miserable with their constant bickering
By the end of the show, they learn that men played all of the parts originally. So they compromise. They do the play exactly as written but any student can play any part no matter their gender. The play is a success.
    But that's just me

But see, what you are proposing would require those at the Daily Wire to deviate from the Conservative/ anti-woke talking points. However, I don't think this could happen b/c they aren't capable of things like independent thought. They would rather "own the libs" than ever suggest they could ever be right in some circumstances too.

What war did Birchum serve in? I heard it was during Vietnam. If this is true, the very youngest Birchum could be is around 67. Keep in mind, to be this young, Birchum would have to been 18 in 1975... during a time period where few servicemen remained in country, most vietnam vets served before 1969.
However, this show animates a character who appears to far younger than possible for a 'nam vet.

    • @HerculeDevantrien
      @HerculeDevantrien Před 25 dny +2

I assume it's because the guy who made the show created the character of Birchum three decades ago. Him being a Vietnam vet would have made sense back then, or even when this show was first pitched in the 2010s.
Considering how poorly thought-out the series is, it's likely they just didn't bother adapting his backstory to something more modern.

    • @kappadarwin9476
      @kappadarwin9476 Před 25 dny +8

I took a creative writing class and they stressed how important time is to a setting. Time shapes how the characters interact with the world around them. Mr. Birchum is acting like how many point out from the 90s. But that doesn't really work in 2024 because his son is a streamer. It also doesn't help that he is veteran so he must have served ether early or mid way through the war which would put him in his 70s to 80s. This wouldn't make sense from a story telling perspective unless Birchum was like Captain America who was frozen and had something that slowed down his aging.
If I was writing Birchum I'd make him a gulf war vet or have him lie about being a Vietnam vet. The latter would actually make his character more interesting.

Yeah, it's probably the most logical war, narratively speaking. I'm not sure if the show said Birchum served in any war at all. I think the show established he was in the Navy, so I'm not sure if he was a combat veteran.

I hate commenting before I finish a video, but. When I was a kid, I had this Archie comic with a three-pager about accessibility. The concept is there's going to be a production of Romeo and Juliet, but Juliet is in a wheelchair and can't even get to the stage, so, of course, it breaks her heart. Betty takes the matter to the school janitor/handyman/mustache guy, and he immediately sees the problem and is like "I can handle this, two shakes"--and builds not only a wheelchair ramp to the stage, making it ADA compliant, but helps them build scaffolding so Juliet can reach the balcony for her biggest scene (uh, besides The Other One). It ends with everyone happy, and with the handyman having seriously flexed on both his skill and his care for the students.
So, uh, yeah, Mr. Birchum loses in every capacity to Mr. Svenson. Mr. Svenson even has a better mustache. Get bent, Birchum.
ETA: Looked it up and it's a single pager called "Getting Into the Act", and it's simpler than I thought, but basic throughline is there. Turns out it's a PSA from the Cerebral Palsy Association. Those damned woke cerebral palsy snowflakes!

  • @yeeyeeyeeye

It would be SO easy to make the food fight appear like an actual warzone; have someone say "cover me" before throwing a bowl of mashed potatoes; someone throws some water over some hot oil and it explodes; have the opposing side commit "war crimes" by throwing food at outside patrons; show someone with food on their face as if their face has been blown off; etc. I know that is too much to ask for the Daily Wire, but you are in a medium that allows for you to be creative and to go as as far as possible! Take advantage of that!
