  • This will be the first video of my Rear axle upgrade. Switching from my Ford 8.8 over to a Ford 9" axle. I will be stripping the axle down and setting up the third member with 5.38 gears an upgraded yukon gear center section and 35 spline axle shafts. Prepping for the DIY disk bake upgrade and setting it up for the Long arm and stretch that will be happening soon.

    Great video. I built a 9” for my TJ. Total cost was 1,500$. I used a speedway motors third member with full spool 4.88 gears and also went over to bronco graveyards and bought a disc brake conversion kit. Would highly recommend it. Best upgrade ive done so far.

    A trussed 9" 35 spline axle is equivalent to a Dana 60.The axle shafts are virtually 1.5" as are the 60 shafts. The 9" is also builder friendly since you can adjust the ring gear by the spanner nuts. Another quality of the 9 " is that you can get Hi pinion carriers from Strange, Currie and TrueHi9. These are great for pinion clearance when rock crawling. My issue is the as mentioned Chinese bearings and the Chinese press!

    Pretty sweet, bro. I personally have always liked the Ford 9inch axle. Tons of aftermarket support and parts are available at any auto store, although you are modding it. Removable 3rd member makes gear swaps easier if you're a racer. Everyone seems to want tons now, but I still dig the fine 9. Great build, bud.

      nelson mol A 9 inch has a smaller ring gear than a Dana 60. Most swapped 60’s are full float, 9’s in the junkyard are not. I would say the Dana 60 stock to stock has an edge. A built 9? Sure, ill give it to the 9 all day.

      The 8.8 will be great with 35’s you should have no problems. As far as the hack n tap, it was on there when I bought the Jeep 10 years ago all the way from 33’s to now 40’s and it has been fine. I believe I will be installing a real sye on this build just because with 40’s it kinda sketches me out, but I would say 35’s no problem.

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  Před 4 lety

      It was a explorer 8.8 so about 59 1/2” wide. The TJ is about 61 1/2”. So the super 88 kit brings it out to match the factory Tj width. Depending on how big your tires are, how much power you have or how hard you beat on it, but the 8.8 is a great axle. But if I had both I would probably go with the 9”.

      A Dana 60 ring gear measures 9.75. as the 3rd pinion bearing on the 9"and if be willing to bet (with the reduced deflection) the strength is similar. As to that the added ground clearance and in my mind you have a winner until you get into 14 bolt or Dana 80
