- DJ Premier is a purist at heart. He picks samples based on feeling and the beats he creates from them are all about honoring that vibe. That lineage has played out from his parents record collection growing up in Houston to his own expansive discography over the last 30 years.

READ THE COMPANION ESSAY
"Because You're Mine: Searching For The Children Of Screamin' Jay Hawkins" by Hanif Abdurraqib // The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Kick In The Door," produced by DJ Premier, is infused with the spirit of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' classic "I Put A Spell on You." Hanif Abdurraqib looks at the art and life of Hawkins, a man who seemed to live multiple lives, and when he died, left behind dozens of children - many of whom he didn't know. Alchemist whispering on the phone is the most Alchemist thing I've ever heard.
with some 70s crime/detective samples in the background
ALC would be crazy on this series
Al doesn't like showing or talking about his process. He said it's like a magician showing his tricks.
@@pookeyblow wearing sunglasses at night
KICKDRUM he literally posts his sample chops on Instagram all the time lol. If anything premiere would be the last one to ever do this
No one can have a conversation about hip hop without having Premier being included in it. Legend.
💯
Or dilla and nujabes
Nujabes made great music but can you name one classic hip-hop tune he has produced?
🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
@@joffreycandella6356 battlecry 🤷🏽♂️
The way that this is edited is extremely aesthetically pleasing, it's cut really well to show the slight differences/similarities from the original track and the background info given from DJ Premier brings it all together - amazing job guys!
Agreed!
Thank you! We appreciate the love! 💕
@@nprmusic great job, perfect way to show how it was made.
Agreed !🙏🏻
Preem could/should have a whole 1 hour masterclass of this. The Teacher in deed.
He should do that Masterclass masterclass
Real spill
Yo straight up, I got no words to express how much that class would mean to me. Id straight up loop it on my side TV no joke. Premiere is the GODFATHER of mixin' n scratchin. I so hope this happens.
Yeah but that woupd be a very limited class. I know preemo.
He would go through the records he sampled to give you the historical content and context. But technique he wont teach...why...because this is HIPHOP culture..and the culture forces you to find your rhythem and form your own style in order to contribute in keeping the culture and the 5 elements alive which is
1. Knowledge/Education
2. Breaking
3. Emceeing
4. Deejaying
5. Grafitti
Preemo is the Goat. How he was able to flip those 3 samples is nothing short of genius
Exactly
NPR never fails to amaze with this series. Preemo is responsible for a significant amount of the soundtrack of my life. Still creating. Still innovating. Still carrying the torch. Respect to Premier and NPR
Facts
"never fails" slow down yo theres only 3 of em lol
DJ premier's voice sound like he smoke hip hop lol
😆
Bro this is the best description ever LOL!
☠️😂
😂😂 facts
Ain’t it 😂 pass the hip hop pack
If you don't LOVE this, you DON'T love Hip-Hop. Period.
Need longer versions of these please
I get chills when I hear Kick in the Door beat!
Content - A+
Music - A+
Video production - A+
thanks for starting the saturday off right NPR
Its crazy that he's from Houston but is one of the pioneers of the Ny sound.
If not mistaken, I think he grew up more in NY, than Houston. Think he was born in Houston, and lived there as a small child, but for the most part, most of his time was spent in NY. Stand corrected, if I'm wrong. I think his grandpops lived in NY.
@@AGLew17 his grand pop lived in Houston.there is a video he explained that.let me find it
Frank Anold no his grandparents stayed in ny and he came during the summers sometimes but he’s life until he finished college was in Texas
When you think about it, all black people in NY are are kind of from the south.
@@AGLew17 No, he just visited a lot because of his grandpa, but he grew up in Houston.
This voice is legendary, big up to dj premier
I love the fact that Alchemist and Premier are best friends. I wish I had a friend to dig with.
Bro y’all really got premier on here, this series already legendary
The Teacher! I listened to his Music for 3 Decades now
I love the tiny desk performances I really do but as a producer this is what made me subscribe to the channel
Premiere frustrates me. He makes this look so easy. One of the goats. He’s definitely the teacher 🙌🏽
One of the true OG's! I wish sampling laws weren't so tedious because it makes it difficult to be creative without worrying about copyright issues.
It’s the lawyers and record companies. Like premo said, when he gets the actual artists on the phone they respect it.
"Right on Brotha! Get down!" -DJ premiere is a legend. Also LOL'd at Alchemist whispering on the phone like "Yo i got a new diggin spot" haha. Protect our DJ's yall! There our most precious natural resource!
Much Love to Premo!!!
And GangStarr!!!
Hard to Earn.... One of the best yet! Àlbums in the history!
DJ Premier...aka Primo, is and will always be my favorite producer! Luv u!
I wish the video was longer. I could listen to Premo drop gems all day.
I need another 2 hours of Prem playing his favorite tracks. This man is the GOAT. 💯
NPR, we need more Premo videos. The man is an icon.
The Planet . One of the greatest Gangstarr tracks hands down 🔥
Legend in the game.
The man is a chop master.
It's easy to use loops but an art form to chop and blend
Could easily watch an hour of him talk about classic tracks
Bring the legend finally to the table: THE ALCHEMIST.
you're watching the legend
@@anthonyaccurate lol for real this kid is crazy. Pete rock, RZA, Lord Finesse, Showbiz ...... all Legends. Not Beverly Hills alchemist
@@scienz exactly. He's cool and all, but a legend? Nah. I love Al, but he doesn't have a legendary catalogue. Nothing wrong with being good to great but he's not a legend.
@@princeoflove713 I definitely think Alchemist is a legend. Dude is unbelievably prolific and more relevant than ever. He obviously doesn't have the cachet of a DJ Premier or a RZA, etc, but he's been delivering heat since his Mobb Deep and Dilated Peoples days. I guess it's really just semantics in the end, but his catalog is legendary to me.
@@Dwight2744 you would be correct as well. These ignorant summer children throwing shade at alchemist CLEARLY haven't the slightest idea of whY they are talking Bout. But u do
Massive vibes!
DJ Premo is a Legend.
Sampling is so amazing, it saves you so much money and time, and if you master it, the possibilities are endless. Its also very meditative when done on a hardware sampler.
Thank you Premo for all the fire beats
premo makes you relax I'm like the minister when I be lacing my wax.
The visualizations of the sounds on these videos is one of the best parts, it really brings the sounds to life. Amazing series.
This man’s blessed, I hope he knows this. 🌎🙏🏽🇪🇨🇺🇸
I keep saying this in every video these need to be longer especially with producers of this calibre that have so many classics
I can listen and watch DJ Premier speak and teach all day... Props again NPR for keeping Preemo/Gang Starr relevant!!! Respect 🙏🏼🙌🏼🤘🏼
*DJ PREMIER* inspired me to making hip hop beats , fo real
PREEMO IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST YET 2 HAV DONE IT! ALCHEMIST AND PETE ROCK UP THERE 2 AT THE TOP OF THE LIST!
Kurt Mathews J Dilla?
I LOVE watching this kind of stuff!!! Much respect
So many classic, iconic beats from him. Hands down one of my all-time fave producers. I grew up in the late 80's and 90's, but I was actually a classical musician, and played professionally as an adult, but I still loved hip hop as kid and was always drawn to Premier because his tracks were so expressive, evocative, and cinematic, not unlike many wonderful classical pieces, and like many great classical pieces they stand the test of time. "Kick in the Door," "Mass Appeal," and the first couple of minutes of "A Million And One Questions" are some of my favorite beats period, and they still knock to this day.
This series is so inspirational keep them coming 🔥🔥💯🙏🏽
You a living legend for this 💯💯💯💯💯💯
get Madlib on, he'll talk your ear off
Militant Marxman He’s actually a quiet and reserved guy, and ALL caps when you say his name brother lol.
🤣🤣😭
Madlib is not a talker hahah
Johannes Gutenburg it’s all caps for DOOM, Madlib is just Madlib or MadLib. Madliberator, Quasimoto etc
That ending was too good. You know how dope it would be to run into DJ Premier and Alchemist at the record store?🔥
yessss, this series is 🔥🔥🔥. respect to Preemo-living legend for sure
Please make this a longer series! Love it
I'm old enough to remember newscasts dedicated to "outing" samples in music. lol!
Thank you to NPR And Dj Premier, always great content.
this series is dope please keep it up
Mind blowing how he flips the samples...love sampling myself but this man is on a level on his own.
I literally said 'wow' again for the 300th time after I heard how he flipped the Biggie sample. It just took that same energy and added Brooklyn to it.
Thank You Dj Premier and NPR
💥🔥🔥🔥 Boom bap!! This is fire. Make this a series and make it longer please!!!
I could watch Preemo do this everyday for hours. Right up there with his story telling.
this is my favorite series you guys have ever done
Once again, I enjoyed the amazing content! 👍🏽
This video is so well done. Thanks NPR and Preemo.
THE TEACHER! I can watch these all day!!!
Just added some new tunes to my digital collection. Salute to Premier! One of the dudes who inspired me way back. I used to punch in mixes with a CD tape boombox back in the 90s as a kid.
LEGEND, much respect 🙏🏽
they need to add sampling to the modern day music classes in schools, i swear.
Yes, i'd love to have learned this!
Some colleges have it included in their music production classes...
Some schools already offer those classes
Preemo the Icon! Salute! 👑
i could watch this for days.
“Kiss my mother 😘, gave my pops a pound 👊🏾.”
🙌🏾
Amazing series
dude is a master, like the grandmaster.. educational, and the DJ premier gig NPR did with the horns and dr/bs was sick ! thanks
i love the visuals
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🙌🏼 1 Of The GOATS🐐
Love this guy
NPR, thank you 🙏🏼
Just art👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
love this series. Just, 9th, Prem...great stuff
Man that just legendary
DJ Premier is a Top 5 producer in rap music history. Legendary status. I hope I get to see in my lifetime more rappers inducted and a wing in the RandRHoF dedicated to the history of rap music.
G.O.A.T. hands down no question!
DJ Premier bring the best out of everyone he work with.
PREEEEEMMMOOOO
as pure an embodiment of hiphop as you can get
fantastic series!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love the production here on this with preem
This needed to be longer! Give Premo a show or something I need more
An absolute legend
I'm a simple man, I see DJ Primo, I click like
Love this series! NPR kicking down doors more than Music Television and Black Entertainment network 🤔
Briliant science of sound
lovelovelove respect to the living legend
Thank you
THE GOAT!
wow visualizations are amazing. more please! haha
This was awesome...this was like cutting school to go to school.
Living legend 👊🏼
These should be waayyy longer episodes!
Preemo makes the sample have a new identity. Artistry.
Genuis !
Well done NPR, well done 👍🏾
Wow this just blew my Fkn mind.
Parabéns NPR, pela valorização da cultura Beatmaker. No braza somos marginais ainda.
The Best ever Salute
Premier @ NPR got me hooked on tiny desk series.
Legend!! Thanku
