My father worked for Chrysler corporation his entire life. Therefore, I have owned Dodge trucks my entire life due to the facts that I got a discount, and the company basically put a roof over my head, fed and clothed me while I was growing up. I am 58 years old and have owned about six ram pickup trucks in my life. As a matter of fact, I owned one the same exact colors as the truck. In this video. I have never had a serious problem with any of my ram trucks ever. Just normal maintenance and they all served me well. So either I am very lucky or people that own Fords and Chevys just like to complain about rams when they never actually owned one. I can't complain about a Ford or a Chevy. I have never owned one. Just saying.......

I have owned my fair share of Dodge Trucks mostly the Dakota and I can attest their longevity as long as you take care of them. I currently drive a 1999 Dakota with the 5.2l Club Cab with the 5 Speed NV3500 with 3.90 SG rear. It has 178,000 miles on it which isn't much in terms of mileage but it has worked its everyday of its 25 years as a pickup I haul my Lawn Equipment all across town and also used it too tow my 1988 Dodge Dakota that was my Show/Drag truck with a 390 CI stroker 5.2l across the country and to shows. I recently replaced the factory installed water pump that finally gave up the ghost after 24 years of service, I just rebuilt the whole front suspension two weeks ago and replaced the brakes rotors and rear shoes 2 years ago. So you aren't the only one who has great luck with their Dodge !!! I even looked at finding another truck to replace the Dakota with but to be honest it fits my needs perfectly and with the lower load height that the Dakota offers all the newer Midsize trucks suck when it comes to the Dakota. I moved from California in 2009 to Texas I towed my 1988 on a 16ft car trailer loaded down with all my belongings in both truck beds. It took me 30 hours to get to my destination but I averaged 10mpg on the flats but the climb from Flagstaff to Albuquerque NM It dipped into the 8-9mpg range, unladen It averages 18mpg if I keep the speed down.

My first diesel was a 1999 Dodge diesel 2500, king cab, LB 4x4. I worked that truck hard, most of it's life while I owned it was towing a 24' GN horse trailer all over NC, TN & VA mountains, towing a 24' GN flatbed trailer with 9k lb tractor/loader or work trailer loaded with tools and conduit. I traded that truck at 251k miles, still running and towing strong. I traded it on a 2005 3500 dually with the HO 5.9, then stepped up to a 42' living quarters 4 horse trailer.
Yes, modern diesels have improved, I went from a 5.9 to a HO 5.9 to the HO 6.7. The step up from 1999 5.9 to 2005 HO 5.9 was a noticeable difference towing, the HO 5.9 to HO 6.7 was a considerable difference. I wouldn't think of giving up my 2017 3500 limited for a 1999 or 2005, but I do wish I had kept the 1999 as an extra truck just because it was an awesome truck.

Love these videos. I’ve been watching for a couple years now.
I had a 96 dodge Cummins as my first vehicle. It looked very similar to this truck. Wish I still had it. We called it the rattle box. Very loud straight pipe 4 inch all the way back to a 5 inch tip.
    Keep up these great videos.

I’m glad you finally got to drive and tow with the typical style truck from the 90s/2000s era. V8 and a 4 speed auto. I told you the 6 speed auto was a game changer for gas trucks. It’s no comparison at how much better they will perform.
This is also the reason for the myth that the current gas HD trucks can’t tow or basically can’t do anything lol. During this time frame they did struggle compared to their diesel counterparts.

I have two of these in the driveway! An 01 gas that gets used 3 days a week landscaping and an 02 with a high output 6speed Cummins that is a dress truck and tows the toys inluding a 32' boat. They are the best and enjoyable. If you can get it, get it. Its fun..

That's when trucks were trucks, JB! Sloppy steering that requires constant attention to stay centered in your lane, jittery ride and lots of wind/road noise. What's not to like, it's a truck! Guess it shows how civilized these newer trucks have come!

When Dodge introduced those in '94, the styling was revolutionary!
I still think they look best compared to later gen Rams, but the improvements in performance and interiors in newer ones can't be beat. The automatic transmissions in those were sketchy too.
    I miss my 95 5.9 1/2 ton though!

Hemifever tune wakes up the 5.2 and 5.9 gas alot. Vacuum can fixes the brakes with bigger tires. Diesel you get hydraulic assisted brakes. 12 valve went out in 1997.5. A 6 speed cummins 2nd gen is a waaay bettet truck than the gas. Better to just remove the tow hitch and only use the bed with gas 2nd gens.

I have several 2nd gens with the 360 I use in a snow removal business. They do fine and are reliable for that but putting much of a trailer on and getting on the highway is just not a good time. That's at my elevation too, can't imagine how bad it is around SLC. I don't think you'd be really impressed with a stock 01 Cummins, I think they were 235hp 460tq in the auto.

You gotta realize the test truck has larger than stock tires and that has a direct effect on towing. Power and handling wise. If it had 4.10 gears in the axle, like the new ram trucks you would see a significant improvement. Most of these had. 3.55 gears. It looked like it worked perfectly to me. Towing with modern trucks is a different animal with 8 and 10 speed transmissions for acceleration and steep hill climbs under a load.

The max towing capcity for that truck is 8,100 lbs with the 5.9 Magnum v8, so you overloaded it by 1,000 lbs that's why it struggled so much, but I'm still very impressed by how well it did for being a 23 year old truck, the 2nd gen ram trucks are my favorite body style ram trucks, my dad has a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab 4wd with the offroad package and it has the 5.2 318 V8.

Love those 2nd gens! Love the old magnums!! Have a 98 dodge cummins 24v with over 600k kms on it, wont die. The steering and the brakes are the poorest part of the truck. The new gas trucks have come a long way, but the diesels have gone the other direction, in my opinion.

Old small block trucks don't compare to new gas, but the old big block and v10 trucks are closer than you'd think, fuel economy and torque are very similar, extra gearing and better brakes are about the only thing the new ones have over the old ones

I have an 03 with the Hemi in it...up grade with 7k lbs and you are doing 35mph, and you are watching your engine temp in the summer. I use it for farm work and local runs to the dump and it does fine (unless we are looking at something heavier at the farm)...I'm just waiting for the tranny to say goodbye (engine already got rebuilt at about 220k miles - broke a valve spring). For smaller runs and things, I enjoy driving it (although it's a stiff ride).

It would be slow regardless but those tires hurt it a good bit too and they effectively change the rear axle ratio. Curious to see how It’d do with stock tire.
New trucks have a lot more power but forget the power for a min. Imagine a 10 speed or even 8 speed behind that old 5.9. It would still be a night and day difference Vs the 4 speed it has.

I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 4x4 quad cab shortbox 5.9 magnum, auto. I never run in overdrive when I tow, period! I tow around 6to 7 k with loaded car trailer. I never use overdrive below 65 mph. My dodge runs strong but the gearing at 3.55 means it’s long legged and loves to run 75 mph all day long that’s when I use the overdrive at 65 it’s below his powerband and can’t pull the overdrive and milage goes out the window. I was watching the video and yelling don’t run it in overdrive your killing yourself. Lol. My guess is that truck has the 3.55 gears too. I would rather be running a dodge v10 over a cummins. Don’t compare a small block 5.9 to a cummins for towing.

lol those old 5.9L Magnums we're slow without a trailer, I can't imagine towing with one, the people who complain today about how underpowered modern 400hp+ gas V8's feel towing need to take a trip back in time and tow with a 245hp 5.9L Dodge, would totally change their perspective, people are so spoiled with power today, it always blows my mind when I hear someone complaining that their 350hp or 400hp truck doesn't feel fast enough, people like that have either forgotten what it used to be like or are to young to know any better. I'm not even an old timer at 35, but I can still remember the days of 230hp V8s and steeply geared 4-Speed auto's and all the towing headache that came along with such an inadequate configuration.

Have you actually weighed that trailer? What do you carry to make it 9k lbs? That's a well kept dodge, 99% of them have fallen apart by now. Worst truck by far I have ever owned was a 99 Ram 2500 just like that. Every interior piece just cracked from highway use, rear end, Trans, AC, the 5.9 engine is the only good part of the truck. I promise you half that interior has been replaced 3 times at the very least. 9k lbs would squat a new truck more than an 2in, and they're rated much higher than that truck which is not rated for 13k lbs.
