The Lost The Wrath Of Cortex Minigame Has Been FOUND!

- A new prototype build of Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex has been secured and released, courtesy of Xhaos. This build is very special because it features a fairly well-known cut content that has been mentioned for years in the community, but had no screenshots or videos of. I'm talking about the scrapped minigame on the loading screens, a feature that almost saw the light of day if not for a Namco patent on the loading screen minigames that caused Konami to hold it back and ask for it to be removed. This explains why the loading screens are so long on the initial PlayStation 2 release, as Traveller's Tales apparently didn't have enough time to clean up the code and strip out the minigame data.
An anonymous source was kind enough to dump the disc and share the ISO with Xhaos, who is now releasing it. Despite being dated only 10 days before the initial PS2 1.0 version, this build also has some other minor differences. You can play it yourself and try to find out what else is different.

Additionally, if you are interested in this game and its modding potential, Xhaos is also working on a reverse engineering project to decompile and port the game to PC. You can join the Discord server in the pinned comment. - Hry

Seems like every Crash is being decompiled whether it's publicly known like CTR or more in private like Twinsanity. Though no one wants to do Bash :(
"Patent on loading screen mini-games"
Just when I thought I couldn't hate copyright laws even more...
Similar thing with how Sega tried to have a patent on the arrow from Crazy Taxi that The Simpsons Road Rage had.
“Man the PS2 version sure could’ve used this-“
0:27 well that explains it 😂
You know this would have made the game a bit more bearable, if it wasn't for that patent. Geez.
Patents ruining creativity as they always do.
Crash game by namco
Pretty sure this isn't the only game to be negatively affected by that patient either
I guess you could say the load times in the final version were _Unbearable_ 😏
@@CrystalFissure wtf touch gras
I love that you're penalised for collecting apple cores. As someone who corrected people on calling wumpa fruit apples, this is cathartic af
Yeah, though Japan is the only exception as Wumpa Fruits are indeed called apples.
Except those seem to be wumpa fruit cores, as the stalk and shape seems identical, so I don't think they had that in mind with this minigame
@@davistoa canonically Wumpas are purple inside, though later developers apparently either didn't knew or didn't care about this detail (looking at you, Radical Entertainment).
@@MrWheyne Oh that's a good point, that was established back when one would splat all over Crash's face in the first game. But that's such a tiny detail it doesn't surprise me later devs would forget about it
He simply does not like apples
Years and years passed, they finally found it, great find!!
Tô amando essas descobertas desse querido, espero ver mais!!
This is sick, sad that patents stopped it from happening looks like fun
Yep all cause Namco and their bogus Patent, it's too vague that it allowed them to abuse it, if it stuck to strictly prohibiting for a galaga type game for a loading screen as it was meant to be, then WoC could've been unaffected. It's one infamous case of a company being as anti consumer as possible with no repercussions for years over this BS patent.
Fuck 90's-2000's Namco!
Honestly, 90-00's Namco made such an enormous quantity of incredibly brilliant games, they could be forgiven for much much more.
@@InsidiousOne that they did, although that bogus patent still is bogus, as anti consumer and anti competitive as it stands, to think it was meant to argue against those who put galaga in their software loading screens.
wow, we've been getting a lotta new pre-release media from this franchise last few months and I'm loving it lol, first the Crash vs Spyro racing game prototype on the Xbox, then the Crash Landed demo on the DS and now this
gonna find a Crash Twinsanity build with Gone a Bit Coco at this rate 🙏
So this explain everything of why the loading screen takes so long in PS2.
It's also due to the fact that the game was on CD and not DVD (as I remember)
@@nico_defi CD loads faster than DVD from my understanding.
I think it still doesnt explain why the load times get increased by a so long 40 seconds. Maybe the game has more trash data in the loading screens?
No, the first release of the game on ps2 was on CD, xbox version and ps2 platinum were on DVD and the loading was almost instantaneous.
@@sebastianaliandkulche 1X DVD loads approximately 9 times faster than 1X CD.
What a total coincidence that this is the *only* build in existence with this mini-game, and the fact that it was built on the day of the 9/11 attacks.
we finally know who did it
The final game was built 10 days later so this minigame really was removed extremely late.

Amazing discovery!
Hello
22:24
Ps2 owners really need this (i need this.)
Darkaiser is the Crash community's No. 1 champion. Seriously, what the hell? It's one cancelled or beta build after another getting discovered
Namco actually had a patent on the Mini Games during loading screens idea. Honestly ruined 3 generations worth of gaming as they got it in the PS1 Era and ran out after the PS3 Era. That's why there's loading screen minigames in Splatoon 1 on Wii U.
Now it makes sense 😮
At least that explains why Crash was falling during loading screens in the first place
The more reverse engineering projects, the better!
The patent and copyright system is absolutely broken beyond belief. If it's not fixed I am afraid we will slowly get worse and worse products until no one will want to risk anything ever again.
That's pretty cool actually!
Damn thats amazing. Gonna download it right away. And what about news on ctr online? U are awesome guys
Send this to WumpaLewis!!! He needs to see this!
That's an amazing finding indeed!

veramente una minchiata ad essere onesti
You know, as much as I love Namco games… that "load screen mini-game" copyright they held was easily the worst thing that any game company has done to the industry.
Well… before DRM, on-disc DLC, and digital-only releases, anyway. (:
Wow! This is truly fascinating! I never would’ve guessed until now!
This is so cool! I really hope more beta stuff can be found on my favorite childhood game soon!
I wish there was a mod that removed those loading screens completely. A modern game installed on a M.2 SSD loads almost instantly, let alone an emulated PS2 title.
You should see the cxbx loading time
That’s fascinating
An incredible find!
Namco patenting loading screen mini games reminds me of Nintendo patenting the concepts of Z Targeting and using the C Buttons for camera control on the N64 (If you've ever wondered why Castlevania 64 has a bad camera, or why Bomberman 64: The Second Attack has no camera control, now you know).
Also, British microcomputer games from the '80s did the loading screen mini game thing first, making this even more scummy.
EDIT: I've just got word that Nintendo tried to file 31(!) patents for TOTK last year. Some companies' greed knows no limits.
Since patents are prone to expire, if WoC gets a re-release/port to newer platforms, they could re-include this minigame to the loading screens. That is unless better hardware reduces the loading time
CXBX Wrath of Cortex loads in under one second. I'm sure a newer version would fade-black from warp room then fade-in with level within just a few frames
@@nprocopi1231 Not to mention that Xbox version has a totally different loading screen
That’s really cool!
Awesome.
How does one learn decompilation?

This is a general answer because I haven't de-complied anything yet but I have maybe a little notion how would you go about it.. you're not going to be effective at it unless you start learning about software development, and ultimately low-level programming
That is so cool what a awesome find 😁
Man, that's crazy. No wonder the load times were so long. There's literally a minigame supposed to be happening but it just never shows up due to being cut.
Let's mod this back into the retail game!
If Activision ever does a remake of Wrath of Cortex (which I hope they do, along with Twinsanity), they should reincorporate that, along with other cut stuff (kinda like how N-Sane Trilogy has the cut Stormy Ascent level from the first Crash Bandicoot)
a second cortex has crashed into the towers
omg i saw a photo of this minigame in a magazine detailing this minigame, idk if i saved it in my wrath of cortex research files (that i was writing for tcrf and then got spectacularly lazy about it)
If you still have this, please let me know, I'd love to see this stuff documented
Fuck Namco for making us sit through a generation of loading screens.
And not pay royalties to the original developers of Ms. PAC-MAN, it’s the very reason why the game and the character can’t be officially featured anymore.
That’s fucking awesome great find man you rock
Its so odd seeing him move in the loading screen lol
So all along they were supposed to be apples and not purple mangos??? Ive been absolutely lied to...
Cool
A patent on loading screen mini games ..what a godamn joke
The wumpa fruit not being purple inside bothers me lmao
Oh wait... are those ones actually supposed to be apples?
Yes. 🗿
Here one thing I have to say: DAMN YOU NAMCO!!!
Woah
Someone correct me if I’m wrong: I believe later versions of the PS2 release of Wrath of Cortex fixed the long loading times. Maybe they removed the rest of the data from the cut loading game after hearing complaints of the unbearable load times?
very cool
It sucks it was scrapped because we would’ve had something to do 🙂
Wow, this mini game is really dope, it's would've been cool if it was added in the final game, if only namco didn't have a patent...
When playing on the PCSX2 emulator there are these transparent dots that show up on screen when playing a level. How do you fix that?
Turns out it's an upscaling problem. Guess I won't be playing it then
man the crash fandom is so tight-knit and comfy
Not really. A good portion of them are the entitled, freeloading bunch who hypocritically knock fundraiser efforts to get these kinds of developmental history preserved and released, only to guarantee downloading and playing said fundraised items when they're released.
OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Now we just need someone to dump what work was done on 'Gone a bit Coco'
You telling me they were making builds of this game while the towers fell?
It doesn't even look like something that would add 20+ more seconds to the load times.
Wait what🤯
😮💜
woah
The WHAT?
bro the discord are bug, we cant talk even reactioning on the turtle bot
it's fixed now! sorry about it ^^

Is have a mod to remap ctr controls?
Your telling me the reason why the load times were so long is because of a fucking loading mini game???

Hello, excellent and attractive. ❤❤❤
This game shouldn't have been released at all, it feels awfully rushed and unfinished. Listen to the loading screen 'music'-does that sound like a sound you would hear in a finished game, let alone a Crash Bandicoot game(?).

How can someone own the right to keep others from simply having mini games during loading screens. It's as long as they ain't stealing the IP. then who cares?
Also I know the wrath of cortex wasn't as good as crash 3. But the games not that bad, there's worse out there. I still had fun playing it, I never had the privilege of playing 3. The loading screens were annoying, especially when your copy wasn't in good shape. This mini game would of made it more tolerable. I love Namco, but owning the right to minigames??? I did not know that.
