5 Things Wrath of Cortex Does BETTER Than the Original Crash Bandicoot Trilogy

  • Crash Bandicoot was one of the last games to use the traditional Crash formula perfected in Crash 3: Warped, but it is often considered to be one of the worst in the series. Despite this, I think there are some things that Wrath of Cortex manages to do better than the incredible Naughty Dog trilogy.

    *FINALLY,* I’m *NOT* the only one that likes *(loves)* “Wrath of Cortex”. It was the first ever Crash game I’ve ever played. And speaking of Crash, *Jess Harnell,* who voices Lo-Lo in that game, has been the current voice of Crash himself. Ever since “Tag Team Racing” in 2005.

    1. No backtracking: Agreed.
    2. Playable Coco: Agreed (unless we considered the N. Sane Trilogy; in that versione, playing as Coco is much better, because in TWOC she is much more playable than in the original Warped, but she is still worse than Crash in everything).
    3. Star-Studded Cast: Agreed.
    4. Ball Levels: The original trilogy doesn't have any kind of ball levels, so I don't know what to say. They're good, but, if you ask me, Warped handled vehicles better than TWOC overall; TWOC has way too many vehicle levels (and I am totally ok with vehicles, it's not like I miss the days of the first 2 Crash games that had very few vehicles and much more platforming), even more than regular levels, and some of those vehicles are so bad I just don't want to use them, while vehicles from Crash 2 and 3 are actually some of my favorite moments in the series.
    5. Multiple gameplay styles per level: Not really. Maybe Crash 2 handled them better, especially when you have jetboard and platform sections in the same level. I appreciate the idea, though.

    • @crashtefano
      @crashtefano Před 3 lety

      @Jon Acosta I'd rather play as Coco with the same moveset than as Coco being Crash but worse. She would be "her own character" if she had at least some quality that Crash doesn't have, like the other playable characters in Crash 4.

    • @crashtefano
      @crashtefano Před 3 lety

      @Jon Acosta A character that can't double jump, slide, do belly flop... Let's say, most of the things that Crash can do, and nothing to kind of replace those abilities? Why, yes. I think that's just a more limited moveset with no advantage whatsoever, and it doesn't make Coco any justice.
      Nina Cortex in Crash Twinsanity had a unique moveset; she could use her extendable arms to reach other areas and punch explosive crates from far away without killing yourself.
      For me, you other do a unique character like that or you just don't; I know a character with no unique gameplay sounds less interesting, but on the other hand you can easily change from Crash to Coco at your will in most levels.

    • @crashtefano
      @crashtefano Před 3 lety

      @Jon Acosta I've completed both TWOC and Crash 1.

    • @crashtefano
      @crashtefano Před 3 lety

      @Jon Acosta The original.
      Difficulty is not the point. I am not bragging because it's hard to play without a double jump. I can play as Coco in TWOC no problem. It's just an unpolished experience that makes me wish I was actually playing as Crash instead of Coco.
      If you prefer it that way, that's fair enough. I don't.

    • @crashtefano

      @Jon Acosta Explain?

    • @dr.feelgoodmalusphillips2475
      @dr.feelgoodmalusphillips2475 Před 3 lety

      @Jon Acosta And yet Cortex makes references to fighting Crash before and him collecting Crystals, Twinsanity has Cortex and Uka Uka unfrozen after Wrath of Cortex and Uka Uka replaces Cortex with Nina in Crash of the Titans due to his constant failures, in which in Mind Over Mutant, Cortex then betrays Uka Uka to get back at him and teams up with N-Brio and he makes a reference to the first game. Just because they don't constantly reference previous games does not mean there isn't no consistency.

  • @GregCubed
    @GregCubed Před rokem +1

    I feel like some of these reasons were a bit forced when there’s definitely some things this game does do legitimately better than the original trilogy.
    For example, every level is unique with its own unique music track to boot. There’s some reused themes, but they always have a unique twist and some aesthetically different elements that make them stand on their own.
    The soundtrack is better, I think that’s something even haters of this game can agree on. They went all out on the music in this game and it has such a unique Y2K techno vibe mixed with traditional Crash motifs. Stellar.
    The bonus warp room is all new levels. Sure they’re mostly vehicle levels, but hey at least it’s all new material and music unlike Crash 2 and 3’s bonus warp rooms.
    Finally the ice physics and swim controls (submarine aside) are handled much better than the original trilogy.
    Wrath of Cortex is certainly flawed and lacks the polish of the original trilogy, but I agree with you that it shouldn’t be written off as hard as it normally is. It’s likely the only warp room crash game we’ll ever get with all unique levels, seeing as Crash 4 did away with the formula (and crystals!) in favor of linear world maps.

    While Woc is a good game in my opinion, the only thing i think does better is the camera (where is slighty far positioned to the player, making backtracking slighty easier) and the bosses that are more challenging. But the trilogy has better controls, graphics, overall gameplay, story, i cant think in some much more positive things that Woc does better than the trilogy, and we have also to take into account the limitaitons of the PS1 and the capabilities of the PS2. I respect your opinion though.

    In particular with multiple play styles in each level. The concept is really fantastic because it can add a much more of a variety or make a level flow smoother if done right.
    However the execution was done very poorly by wrath of cortex, mainly due to controlling anything other than the atlas sphere felt like crap or had no purpose to belong in a level like that.

    Good positives. Maybe except for the gameplay styles. While the overpack and chase vehicles are fine. The Aliens like mech is a bit clunky and the submarine is awful.
    Another positive I can think of is the fact the 5th level in each world is in Cortex’s factory. It’s like Crash is taking the fight to Cortex. Very much reminds me of the castle levels in Mario games. With out the bosses at the end.

    1. It does seem nice that this game has no backtracking like before.
    2. The idea of playing as Coco was pretty cool too, like that she's not a pallet swap of Crash like in N.Sane Trilogy, that being said though, it is pretty shit that she's not as good as Crash.
    3. Star studded cast was interesting I guess, I mean I don't really think it adds or takes away anything but it is interesting.
    4. Ball levels to me were pretty overrated. Like I've never had any fun with them since I always try my best to take my time in these stages so I don't miss any crates which makes each of them drag on longer then they need to.
    5. The fact that some levels start out as either a platforming stage or a vehicle level, only to switch to the opposite style is more of a negative then a positive because it means levels lack any focus in what they're trying to be. Like either have one or the other for each levels but don't have both, that just adds more to the issues with the vehicle levels in the game.

  • @JosephRobinsonSMBX
    @JosephRobinsonSMBX Před 2 lety

    I think Wrath of Cortex is really fun. It's definitely below the quality standard of Crash 2 and especially 3, and the design is way less focused, but the regular platforming stages are absolutely brilliant, and I don't mind a lot of the gimmicks (I really like the ball and the minecart). Also I appreciate not needing any gold relics to get 100% (well, 106%) and the music is GODLY.

    "The beloved formula perfected in Crash 3"
    Hoho, i am laughing. There's another thing wrong i'll touch on in a min and i'll ignore the backtracking bit coz i already typed a bible on a much more in deapth critique and i'm just gonna say this. It's mostly fine and ND new about it since with the bees you can hear them when they approach, you could kill all the enemies before a fork etcetcetc. Basically the backtracking is an optional challenge for completionists (a welcomed one at that, i've became so good over the years it's like i'm never challenged anymore, my fav level in Crash 2 is Cold Hard Crash ffs) just like the secrets. Crash 2 isn't that long by todays standards, but for the PS1 it is quite big, anyways it's not like the backtracking is what it is in MInd Over Mutant which is just padding.
    That other wrong being Coco: controls worse than Crash in every way, but at least they share the same floaty physics, it's like you're playing with PS1 Crash in her levels with a bit more control. Also her kick is pathetic lol, still better than N. Sane, at least she had her own live counter in WOC, even her own animations in Mind Over Mutant.
    That's pretty much it, but the vechiles should be kept to a minimun, just a nice little change of pace after all the platfroming, don't overdo them like in WOC or Warped, especially in a game THIS linear, they come out of nowhere and mess up the flow of gameplay. There's a reason nobody complaints about all the gameplay styles being in Twinsanity, they flow well together and they make sense in the context of the story. You don't just jump on a button and the game's like, "Here, time for another crappy vechile level i guess". With that being said...... *_THE ATLAS SPHERE MAKES ME CU_* -

      Warped was recieved better than Crash 2, so if you dont like it, then bad for you, the formula in Crash 3 is the perfect one, thats the reason why Wrath Of Cortex, XS, N Tranced and all of the fan Crash games takes the bases of Warped and not Crash 2 (we have to wait until Crash 4 to see if surprasses Warped). And Twinsanity has even worse gimmicks....

      @@duelz9366 Of course, it's pretty much facts so you would be stupid if you didn't. (Unless you're like me who i like Spider-Man 3 more than 2, but I know that Spider-Man 2 is the better movie) I recommend you watch Retropolis Zone analysis on Warped if you were curious about my, "Wrote an entire Bible" comment. @@XpertGreekGamer The way I like to review games is look at it from an outside perspective and acknowledge the game for what it really is. I like to be unbiased and get my emotions out of my judgment. I also like to back my shit up with reasons and examples

      @@duelz9366 You and i are a lot alike then, i also like looking at things objectively and putting facts over emotions, you see that with my Spider-Man example, the important thing is that even when i like SM3 over 2, i UNDERSTAND! That SM2 is the greater Spider-Man film. Speaking of outsider perspectives, i see most people that didn't grow up with Crash, not liking the franchise when they try it. Could be their Mario (another good platformer) or Sonic (meh) biases but it really makes you think. Is Crash only still going because of nostalgia? Why isn't he AT LEAST being respected outside of the fandom? Crash 2 (PS1) is still great and i recommend everyone plays it, but there's a reason Twinsanity is considered by some to be "A Crash Bandicoot game for non Crash Bandicoot fans".
      Which is true, most outsiders fav is Twinsanity, even for me and I'm not even an outsider. I so wish Crash """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""5""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" uses the same updated formula of Twinsanity. I've pretty much have come to peace with the fact that Crash 2 will never be topped and there's no need to, just let modders keep creating amazing new levels for that game (seriously check some of these modders out they're amazing) and leave it at that. So while Twinsanity ain't Jak And Daxter or Spyro or Banjo levels of open and stuff, it doesn't have to be, but it could, some linearity is what keeps it together with the old stuff and it's not too different like Mind Over Mutant. (which i also like) Have more openness yes, but also some of the same linear design like most Twinsanity levels that aren't hubs have. Add to that the different types of gems, paths, sections and even levels you can access if you explore or just curious (like that cut bug chase level there was supposed to be in the tutorial when chasing Cortex) and we're looking at a perfect game here.
      TL:DR Remake Twinsanity. But actually remake it, not just "remaster it from the ground up" with new visuals n shet. (I actually still prefer Twinsanitys art style to this day, it's some of the best for me up there with TF2 and Hotline Miami 2) I think that's called a re-imagine but whatever it is, finish Twinsanity, release its sequel and have that Cortex spin off game. Some Oxford Studios devs even offered to help with that so get tf on it. (Also here's one of the modders working on stuff like Crash 2: czcams.com/video/v5b3CwKEVEE/video.html)
      Edit: Link didn't work....so i had to edit, anyway here it is: czcams.com/video/v5b3CwKEVEE/video.html

    I do prefer WOC to Warped!
    I agree with these 5 points! And probaly the biggest thing for me is the fact that almost every level themings are diffrent from each other. And for the few there have the same theming, by almost all of them still have diffrent soundtracks and comepletely diffrent gameplay! Thats a massive plus for me since it don't feel repetetive. It can get a bit repetetive to have 2 or 3 levels with the excact same atmosphere, soundtrack and gameplay

    2 is infinitely better than WoC. Walking towards the camera to backtrack for boxes is just part of the challenge, git gud.
