I swear dude, this guy is pumping these vids faster than I can follow them.
Haha should I slow down?
@@JoshGambrell NO!!!!!! DON'T STOP!!!!
Grant Abbitt's a Blender tutorial machine as well! We are a very luck community indeed!
Is it weird that I find it quite pleasurable to just sit here and just watch a tutorial without needing to open Blender and attempt it?
Can't tell you how many hours I've spent on Blender over the last couple of years, learning and crafting, correcting and junking, retrying etc. But I still like to just watch a tutorial without trying the model; something is so appealing about watching someone else create, and understanding what they are doing while also learning from someone else's thought process.
Fr. It's like actual entertainment for me now. Even tho I never try most of these myself but I m still hooked to keep on watching these tutorials. Nice to see I'm not alone.
same, sometimes i just watch tutorial while eating my lunch ^^ lol
Like the way you sometimes show alternative actions, really helpful, especially that autosmooth and adding a few loops to help smooth out the bevels. Thanks.
Well, i was thinking to create a box today to practice some things, and you just upload a box tutorial, this video certainly will be useful to get some design ideas... Thanks one more time Josh, you're amazing!!
56 minutes of tutorial. That takes dedication dude. Thank you so much for your efforts!
man your videos are so helpful i think what the majority of hard-surface learners or even 3D in general suffer from is the fact that tutors always tend to make tutorials about models that are easy and don't take long but you man just don't really care you provide all these ultimately helpful videos for no cost whatsoever you listen to your subscribers and you even taught us how to model without any paid addons i can't thank you enough but i truly hope your channel flourishes
I really appreciate you man! Although I have my own video interests, so many of my videos are subscriber-requested because I value what people want to learn and what people struggle with, and I genuinely want to fill that void.
Thanks for this Josh... please make a video using hardops and boxcutter to create this, that would be awesome!
I see Josh's video, I leave a like . Man I promise when I get enough money, I will become a member of your patreon. Idk why I love your tutorials so much. keep uploading these please
Aw thanks a bunch man! I actually discontinued my Patreon, but Ryuu and I are starting a joint one very very soon offering way better benefits than my personal one had, so I'll make an announcement video once that is active.
Hi guys, thanks for the tuts and the e-book. It's cool and fun to read. :)
Awesome!! The tutorial is here! Thank you! Looking forward to giving it a go.
My pleasure bruv
Another great video Josh.I just did it in Boxcutter and smiled. I seem to have trouble with the slice operation in Boxcutter. Never mind, that's out of scope here. Very nicely done and the final bevel is the icing on the cake. Thumbs up.
Your videos have taken me to the next level. I love your workflows.
Thanks a bunch!
This vanilla tutorials are really nice, thank you!
Superb tutorial, esp the rendering!
Very nice content, I learnt a lot from this. Thank you so much
Wow! thank you for this tutorial, this will definitely help me improve my modeling
Very good tutorial, it helps to understand the workflow and the methodology.
Clear and precise. Thank you so much ! ;-)
Great lesson, honestly I learned so much !
This is really helpful, thanks!
Thanks man! This is so good. I am going to be referring to this one for a while.
You are one of the BEST Josh! Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial WITHOUT timelapse! I'm really really grateful to you!
Coming from a Solidworks background learning blender is like learning a way of thinking, pretty cool.
Wow awesome job - thanks!
This vid helped me alot! Thenks josh!
I don't usually leave comments on videos I watch . But man , I learned so much from this tut . Cheers
Thanks a bunch! Glad it helped man.
Thx for these amazing tutors! You help me a lot
You bet!
I learn a lot with your tutorials, thank Josh!
You’re welcome my dude!
I made my version of a cube with this tutorial, but very different! I’m learning how avoid shadind and bevel issue and it’s work! I’m happy my professor.
thanks..really! josh, even though I am just starting blender and your tutorials really helped me and YES! I didn't forget to like and subscribe
You da best!
Thanks for giving this for free
Vanilla is our favorite!
Thank you very much
You are the man of your word
THANKS A LOT for your videos are so frikin cool and INSANE USEFUL!!! Thanks a lot bud! Greetings from Italy! 😄🇮🇹
My thanks for the video!
At 2:30 minute, instead of using inset, use extrude/scale, results in parallel lines with no crossover, then limit dissolve set to .1 to remove excess edges, or select edges and dissolve edges. use ngons to your advantage. :) , allows boolean ops in more areas.
Genius! Thanks for that.
It took me a minute to understand why this would be better, but WOW. It's a lot easier since no overlaps happen.
Could you please explain @Rob what you mean when you say "then limit dissolve..."? I get the Scale Extrude idea, but not the other half. Thanks!
@@evankirsh Hi, the limited dissolve(delete key-option) is to remove the edges on flat surfaces and limiting it to 0.1 to avoid removing beveled edges, when doing boolean operations having a clean mesh is helpful, less chance of edges overlapping, I would also use the knife tool to place the remaining edges away from where you might want to place cuts or bevels, so in the above example you can apply smaller bevels to the top edges without the fan shaped lines causing issues.
Well done. Very useful tutorial. :-)
Thank you for the great tut.
On another note: what about modelling the pre-decal mesh (until ~19.30) twice, in parallel, with vanilla and with the HOps+BoxCutter combo. What do you think?
Great tutorial, my favorite aspect of blender is the hard surface modeling, however I cant seem to find out how to import all the decal packs I have lying around on my PC into decal machine.
Awesome video. Do you happen to have this tuorial but done with boxcutter and all the add-ons?
thank you for this tutorials.
My pleasure!
I think @13:55,you can select all the bottom vertices, use "shear"
10:40 wouldn't adding a Weld modifier fix these shadow Ng issues by merging Ng two close verticies together? I've found it can also fix some boolean errors if I'm building up many layers of boolean and get these near verticies that glitch the modifiers out.
Can you make or recommend a video on a Decal Machine+high poly to substance painter low poly? Decal machine is very cool, but it would be better if I could bake the details together with the high poly to make game ready models.
Thanks so much for helping me learn about hard surface modeling, you have super helpful tutorials! Though i was wondering how you made your edges in blender look more defined and white almost, i couldn't find a setting for it.
Hey man, thanks a bunch. You just go to the matcap settings (dropdown, top right) and turn on cavity and shadow. Cheers!

Thanks again! It worked perfectly!
Nice tutor.Btw do you have tutoural for sub div modeling ?
Default cube got an upgrade.
thanks is a beautiful tutorial
Thanks!
question josh can i use kitops for this model instead of decal machine. thank you
mai i ask about 9.55 what hotkey that you use?
Since the box is almost perfectly symmetrical couldn't you just mirror the original cube straight down the middle and then do the cuts on that, then do whatever asymmetry you want after?
"Best thing about this is I'm going to use the vanilla work flow, so no paid add-ons."
Uses decal machine for texturing details. (Paid add-on)
Great tutorial though, so easy to follow and fantastic for the built in add-ons that are available for hard surface modelling.
Thanks man, although I did mention at the beginning I’d be using it ;)
Josh Gambrell absolutely. It made me laugh though. :)
Also Adobe Photoshop is certainly not free so it was useless for me to watch any of that entire section. I use Paint.NET and GImp because they're free.
@@bill392 Not really useless. I use GIMP and most of the same tools as Photoshop are there to be used, just organized differently. Krita is also a really nice, free imaging software.
@@JoshGambrell Not really "vanilla" then, is it. That said, I've got a nice box w/ no details.
Hello. I'm wondering if your edges are so sharp from the top view, can you share how to improve the viewing angle on blender? Thanks
Longer form... I like longer form, thank you for your patience :)
Can you make a tutorial for sculpting?...btw Thanks man your tutorials are awesome
maybe once im more comfortable with it haha
One can tell that the decals are not geo. Maybe not the tiny micro-circles, but the bigger screw stuff for sure. It might not matter for some use-cases, but I've started to become a fan of just using real geo whenever possible because the lighting is just so much better with Cycles.
Is it possible to use these directions for GIMP instead of photoshop?
9:55 can you tell the alternative of Ctrl+forward+/ ? I have 60% keyboard or where I should change the keymap button ?
Is it possible to do the same without decalmachine ??
Thank you for posting these great tutorials. I have one question can a non-topology friendly mesh can be used in-game or in movies if it is not going to deform. Like what you are making in this video using booleans or mesh from Autodesk fusion 360.
Absolutely. There’s this nonsensical stigma against the use of ngons as if they’re some evil being. The more people moan about them the more I double down on my stance. VFX work or deforming, like you said, can cause massive problems if you use Ngons and should not be passed down a pipeline. You’ll get laughed at and turned down. Anything else? Go for it. I use ngons in nearly everything since I don’t deform or do VFX work. Game assets? Totally cool as well. Ngons don’t technically even exist at a hardware level - your GPU only reads triangles. This is also why Blender displays a Tri count, even if your mesh doesn’t have triangles. So the entire anti-ngon argument is silly. It is important, though, to understand how to manage them carefully because they can cause certain problems (especially with shading) if you don’t know how to deal with them effectively, which is where I think this stigma comes from. Also, I know plenty of modelers that use CAD software like Moi which, if transcribed into polygons, would be full of ngons. So yea, don’t listen to all the fluff people tell you about ngons. They watch two beginner tutorials, hear “don’t use ngons”, and think that is the universal truth. Hope that helps. Btw, if you’re into game stuff our game asset course on our website discusses this workflow (we use booleans and ngons), so if you’re looking for something a bit structured in that regard I’d recommend picking it up. Good question!
how do i get my key board to work like yours
una duda para sacar esas imágenes que adons es en 22:03.
Magia osca haces
What does the box know? How compressed are its neurons????
Where can I download for free the addon you are using in the video
when he adds the metallic setting on material preview its not lighting/shining up properly at least its not like his, I think its a word lighting issue but cant find it.
hey JOSH? is there any other way that we can make decals by ourselves?? like at the first, i do all the holes manually with a cyclinder. and then add a Array modifier to it. To increase the count of holes to downwards. and then somehow i take screenshot of this. and i open a new blender file and add that screenshot of those Holes on a single plane(4 vertices). something like this?? please answer bro.
Which version do you use dude?
what are screen task keys?
23:40 ctrl numpad how do you press i can't
What's the shortcut used at 9:55 min.?
The bevel modifier doesn't work well for me at 27:28
All the options of your tutorials are great, the long ones and the short ones.
I would like to know how to hide the boolean wire that is very uncomfortable to work with. Thank you for your collaboration!!
If you're talking about the outlines around the object you're using for the boolean operations, you can move them to a separate collection that you can toggle to be hidden in the viewport.
Josh talks about it in his cylinoid video. Create a collection called "Cutters", select your boolean object, click M and move it to the cutters collection. Then make that collection hidden.
@@alexdivietro Hello, cool thanks for answer!
No problem, hope that helps! I'm still learning too, but if you have questions feel free to reach out.
I can't just select the sides. It select all corners (top, sides, and bottom). If I try to deselect the bottom, it only keeps the top selected when I try to bevel it...
I would follow this but I am all out of smart stuff to store in it!
Do you have any tutorials for vanilla blender? cause as amazing as these tools are, I dont have $50 to spare to get these addons
Plenty, just scroll through some of my recent videos. We also have 2 courses, all vanilla.
Josh Gambrell Thanks, i appreciate it
please excuse me. allow curiosity to find out. where can I buy an addon?
scifi weapon next and texturing in quixel mixer
anyone know how viable this style of modeling is for games and 3D printing? I know if you apply all modifiers it won't have the prettiest geometry, but does that matter any more in 2022?
10:1 i didn't get that line of second squire
how did you get the cube to look like that, like it has a different look right off the bat, also how did you get it to smooth out, for me when i did the ctrl+r thing it didn't smooth it out
You can turn on Cavity and Shadow in the Viewport shading menu (top right dropdown where those 4 little orbs are). To smooth it out, bevel and turn on harden normals in the bevel modifier.
@@JoshGambrell thank you so much!!
Hi,
I tried to mirror like you but I coudn't make it. Nothing happened
Is there a special manipulation to make before to do it?
Could u plz list me the add-ons that you use for hard surface modelling ??
Hard Ops
Boxcutter
Mesh Machine
Decal Machine
Machin3 Tools
Mira Tools
The last two are free!
how i can download bool tool
Hello Josh,
The decals that you are using, where can I find them ?
Good starter (like me !) tutorial
Check our ponte ryuurui’s decal packs, sir charles, JRO tools
@@JoshGambrell Thanks ! I have bought some decals. But I have a small issue with applying the red material on the middel part of the object.
For the Cube itself I created a metall material as shown. And then I created a new material for the middlepart. On your tutorial (25.30) a small number 2 appears in the material editor. I use version 2.90.0. And I dont see this number. I guess that what is going wrong.
What to do to solve this Problem ?
Best regards,
Guus
10:30 the ctrl + numpad is half seen, I tried every option available in the bool tool but didn't get what you did. I'm using 2.93 version, could you help. Thanks in advance
nice!!!
I have a problem Decal Machine. Every time I select a decal and put it on the object, I can't use any other decal anymore. I should save my file then open it again to add another one.
So I buy decal machine and it doesnt have the very first decal you show to use @ 24:04. I know I can just experiment, but where are the rest of my decals?
I just got hard ops and thought hell yea I can finally follow along, and then you say you're not gonna use addons for this vid 😂
I made a 4 hour tutorial a few videos ago, watch that one
hi Josh, thx for this tutorial, its amazing!
just having a major problem....
when putting the color on the box @24:56, my box won't color where booleans have been used. The outside becomes dark, but the 'insides' remain grey. Any advice?
ok, nvm here too. found the answer below :D
Hey, Josh thanks for the great content! Your website is lighting up my security software like a Xmas tree. I wanted to get a copy of your hard surface e book. Any thoughts?
No clue, we got another message about this, we’ll contact godaddy
Could you send us a screenshot to info@blenderbros.com?
@@JoshGambrell just sent you
14:00 - 15:00 You could have just used the "Shear tool".
Is there a free alternative for decal machine?
Not that I know of. I’d just buy it; it’s going to save you immense time and make your portfolio stand out over others who go the cheap route
really good tutorial but y ctrl - dosen't work instead it zooms out how can i fix it would mean a lot to me
Use the numpad
Hello Josh, thank you for the comprehensive video. I am stuck at 13:52 and am not able to figure out how to open this pie menu. Can anyone help please?
I’m using the machin3 tools addon.
@@JoshGambrell Thank you! I’ll get it right away. Keep up the great work Josh. Thanks again to sharing your knowledge with us.
Man I thought you are going to model this thing high poly
Was doing good with tutorial until I got to adding material(24:54). I made box metallic which worked except where the cut-outs are. The insides of the cut-outs were not effected by the metal material. I tried to go to Edit mode to select unaffected faces to apply material but they are not showing. Why are his cut-outs showing the metal material and mine isn't?
nvm I guess I didn't apply bools before adding materials so had to do that then select all unmaterialized faces and assign the material to them.
Darn, I was really hoping he would use Boxcutter & Hops. Since following masterxeon1001 I can't do any project w/o them. But it was interesting. I'd forgotten how to do all those operations in vanilla mode. I would've loved had he linked the reference image in the description though.
Hi Curtis, I have other videos showing Hard Ops/Boxcutter workflows. Unfortunately people always tend to complain if I do too many addon videos, so I like to find a healthy balance.
@@JoshGambrell No worries. I totally get it. I used to do 3DS MAX and hated it when tutorials included $100 modifiers for a program that costs $$$$$. I normally don't buy addons for programs. But since Blender is free, I don't mind dropping $$ here and there.
can anybody knows mirror doesn't work on mine
Geez, I'm a dinosaur. New to Blender, but generally I didn't know it was possible to modify booleans after the cut.
What HDRI did you use in this video?
I believe it was abandoned slipway
@@JoshGambrell yep I found it from a part of the video lol
