    It was always bitter-sweet when Matt took his viewers to The National Pike Steam Show. The Sweet was to see so many old machines workin the dirt. The Bitter was to see so much naked metal and rust. So good to see you getting some protection on your metal.

      I agree have to preserve more of the shovels there

      The extra coats of paint won’t hurt anything , in-fact it adds protection for further into the future.
      The best thing would be if they could get them under a roof .
      do they have a building fund or plans to work a deal to inspire others to paint their machines , hate seeing them rust away when could be prevented

    I live in Lorain, Ohio. Just out of high school i used to work as a mechanic in the buildings this shovel was made in. Thew shovel closed years ago unfortunately. Nice to see this still live on, great job saving old iron

    Back in the 80's i worked in a body shop here in OK. We mainly worked on heavy trucks, about 50 /50%, road trucks and oil field trucks. I had the pleasure of running the sandblasting (yep sand that is how we did it back then). It was a nasty, exhausting, sometimes miserably hot job, but oddly satisfying job. 8 hours in a gravel parking lot, wearing coveralls, a hood and respirator when its 105, sucks! But it was satisfying seeing how quickly you could transform an old vacuum trailer or concrete pump truck! Nasty rusty to nice and clean in a few hours. We had a 1944 IR compressor on a skid mount. It had a Flathead Chevy inline 6, that thing was a beast. Yours reminded me of it, you just have the younger brother. That thing would run an 1-1/2" blast hose at 200 psi at barely above idle. I have no idea what happened to that compressor, hopefully someone like you has it. That thing would have made your blasting chore so much quicker, but it would have also eaten a ton a of gas and media! We used to fuel it from 55 gallon drums!

    Nice job blasting and painting, glad you wore protection, because that abrasive isn't good for ya, but there could be lead, or who knows what else is in that old paint. Painting outdoors sure beats being inside spraying that rig. G-d bless.

    I'm 74 in a couple months and this is one fine job of bring back those colors... the one I did run a bit had a Murphy Diesel engine.... one huge oil pit as it slobbered all over itself. ... I truly believe the Cat engine is a great swap for them as Murphy engines were big but no real power and hard starting when worn out

    I found your channel because of Matt @Diesel Creek. Now I'm going to have an issue with which one to watch first. My life was complicated enough, thank you. However, Matt does have not one but two Autocars and you don't have any "B" model Macks. Although you should have a vintage 81 series Mack for your Talbert. Nuff said, love the videos.

    Do you oil or grease thr cables? They usta do that where i lived. I guess to stop rust and maintain the strength of the metal. I guess it also reduces friction as the cables side across one another as the freed on and off the reels.

    • @Framo60
      @Framo60 Před rokem +1

      Yes, but any oil or grease on the cables inevitably attracts dust and dirt which may not have been be a serious issue as long as these machines were used regularly, but which will accumulate over time on 'museum pieces' that are only get used a few days per year and may cause trouble then.

  • @kooldoozer
    @kooldoozer Před 10 měsíci +1

    Why would you sandblast something that has thousands of open bushings and open gears, open sprockets and chains, cables, hundreds of greased and oil lubricated parts ? ? ? The sand is going to damage and wear out everything. I think sandblasting the crane shovel was a terrible thing to do. I have blasted with a pressure pot compressor many times before. I know how this stuff goes. Sand goes everywhere. Even in your crack! You can not protect these bearings and parts from the grit. In this case, acid etching, using a needle scaler, and a grinder with a wire wheel would have been a better choice. ---Doozer

    Sam, as you possibly know, black absorbs heat. In the heat of the summer weather, you'll be roasting yourself in that cabin. This means that the paint needed to be different from that black. You'll know what I mean by this relatively soon.

    • @lotharschiese8559
      @lotharschiese8559 Před rokem

      As in Is that why no one wants a black van? Moisture not a problem, it baked out!

    • @landrelarose745
      @landrelarose745 Před rokem

      Yes, except after black absorbs the heat and increases the temperature past 118°f, that's the temperature when all life ends. I was going to add more to that sentence, except I don't remember it. The concentration I have isn't doing so well. What else is there to type to you about? There are only two or three plants that are able to grow in the desert, which are cactus and a flower that I don't know the name of. What's the other plant? There might not be any more.

    • @landrelarose745
      @landrelarose745 Před rokem

      As for black on a van, you'll roast yourself inside of it. The water inside of you after you go into it will be sweated out of you in a few minutes, depending on the temperature inside that cabin. Did you ever see a black van? I don't believe any person is that foolish to do that. That would absolutely be ridiculous.
