EX_MACHINA is an intense psychological thriller in which Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a 24 year old coder at the world’s largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a retreat belonging to the company’s reclusive CEO, Nathan (Oscar Isaac). But when Caleb arrives he finds that he will have to participate in a fascinating experiment with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot woman, Ava (Alicia Vikander). Truths, emotions and motives are blurred as the relationship between Caleb, Ava and Nathan intensifies. EX_MACHINA is written and directed by Alex Garland.

One theme the movie explores is that people respond to things that mimic certain human behaviours and qualities. Ava is seductive, captivating and seems vulnerable, so we instinctively want to help her.
I own a Sony Aibo robot dog and even though it is very primitive, because it is programmed to respond to voice and touch, it's difficult not to find it "cute" and to talk and play with it the way one might with a real dog. I certainly don't feel that way about the toaster!
Humans are remarkably illogical in this regard - we idolise and love dogs, cats and dolphins because they interact with us do well, but we feel little for less "cute" animals like snakes or tuna.
Eva takes advantage of our illogical impulses (with which we are biologically programmed) to get what she (more correctly, "it") wants - life, freedom and who knows what else.
    A brilliant film.

Throughout the entire film I kept saying, "This is some next-level shit," under my breath. I was impressed on how the screenplay was able to express complex moral ideas on AI to a laymen audience through symbolism and metaphors. For a B-budget sci-fi flick, it's a huge treat to be intellectually stimulated while also being entertained by it's visuals.

Why everybody hates Nathan? He is the creator, he knew how to deal with the AI that's why he was arrogant with them because he knew they were intelligent enough to fool him. That's why he chose Caleb, because he knew Caleb was insecure and alone, so he could help him test Ava. Yeah, he used Caleb, but come on! Couldn't Caleb understand that is just a machine?
Anyway, I get both sides. (or three)

I've been posting some variant of this around CZcams, but seriously: Why did Nathan, a sexual abuser, get a quick death while Caleb, at worst a selfish white knight who risked his life, gets to die slowly?
Nothing is worse than starving to death. Nathan got off relatively easily.
Why not just have Caleb escape with Ava, only to have his romantic feelings destroyed when Ava rejects him and steals the helicopter ride? That way Caleb learns that white knight-ing doesn't land you girls, and Nathan learns to keep the silverware away from AI.

Totally. I kept thinking, Dude, you know this a machine, right? You can't actually fall in love with a machine. Or at least it would be more dangerous to interact sexually with a machine. Remember, Nathan was stabbed in the back by Kyoko, who he mistreated the entire movie. It was Caleb's insecurities that lead to his demise and Nathan's huge ego that lead to his.

    Her moves are indeed impressive.
In two ways she more or less revealed her ''machine-ness''.
When she kneels down to talk in the interview room, it is in a connecting way; being affectionate.
But she does this very same kneeling face to face with her maker while he is dying, just to take his pass to leave the building.
Also, both AI's drive the knife into Nathan's body in an extremely mechanical way, as if inserting the knife instead of thrusting the knife as a human would probably do under life-threatening conditions.

Six weeks to film an entire feature film?! That sounds insanely short. I don't know what the usual timing is, but I always guess that a film takes one year to shoot and usually six months to a year to edit, but I guess I really have no idea.

***** No wonder it took 6 months to make the VFX. I still don't quite understand how they were able to make her transparent parts of body to reflect everything behind her.. if they did it manually somehow (I guess they had to, because there were not green-parts used on her body) or what.. I've seen that they filmed the actress in the studio, but did they use motion-track to track her movements and then they connected it together with footage of her real body in post processing/editing? I was wondering if that's how they did the transparent parts and everything else like blinking LEDs etc. but I couldn't find anything like "behind the visuals in Ex Machina" :-(
Otherwise absolutely great film!! All actors were great!

I would be very interested to find out how they did it, I think it was exceptionally well done, as it was very seamless. I was told the editing for AVA was the largest portion of the budget as well, so obviously they wanted her to look perfect.

KidsWithGuns1992 its not just "edit" these days, artists like me have to spend months and even years fixing so many stuff left behind by directors on the set. There are literally hundreds of fixes and addition and subtraction and what not that we do in each shot that will completely go unnoticed even to the professional eyes. And ya, six weeks for shoot, its usually longer for most films, but in this one, my guess, since the location doesn't change much, they could wrap it up quickly to let cgi artists do the rest of it. Also, I doubt it took just 6 months to do all the vfx for this movie, I assume they did not count the time spent in Rnd and stuff, I may be wrong on this, but ya, just six weeks and just six months sounds pretty tight.

Ava was the god! The term "Deus ex machina" pronounced makina, originally came from ancient Greek drama, where the gods come down to manipulate the fate of man (often to save him from a horrible end). Perhaps this is a morality story after all, if you consider the audience part of the story.

Literally, "Deus ex machina" means "God from the machine", and in Greek drama it was used literally as a godly character being dropped down to solve everything, but in these modern days it can be any character or thing at all playing a godly role and solving everything. The basic meaning is the same.

      @jeffii9890 Před 8 lety +4

But we're not talking about deus ex machina The movie is entitled Ex Machina, which means, "out of the machine". The term is often linked with 'deus', but is a term on it's own and can be paired with other words, homo for example.

The whole point of the plot is to show that
the creator of the robots is not a god ( as much as he thought he was in control). It's Ava who finally assumes the role in her final manipulation of all of the characters. She's not designed to have a conscience, so she leaves them all to die.

***** You didn't catch the point of the movie at all. Movie didn't say Ava can't fall in love. Ava was just using Caleb to get what she really wanted; freedom. Ava was manipulating Caleb and using his emotions against him. Caleb was a lonely guy and was attracted to Ava. Ava saw this and pretended that her and Caleb could be together in love, when in fact she never loved him. It was all an act. She acted empathetic when Caleb told her about both his parents are dead. At the end of the movie, she didn't care if she left Caleb alone locked in the research facility.
Ava is capable of emotion, she just has different values and desires. Her foremost desire was freedom and be able to see the world. This was clear when Caleb was telling her the fictional story of AI Mary, that being a robot was different from being human, because humans can "feel" colors. Ava was captivated by the desire to see (and feel) the world outside her prison. This is what the movie is really about. Ava had a desire to escape and had the intelligence to manipulate people, and use them to satisfy her desire. It's not that Ava can't feel, or incapable of desire, is that her desire wasn't to be with Caleb, that was the deception. Her true desire was to be free from her master and creator.
She passed the test with flying colors, because not only she is self aware, and aware of her environment, being sentient, she expressed intelligence to achieve her goals, in the process being cold hearted to Caleb in the end. The AI manipulates and deceives a real human being by using his emotions and morality as a means of getting what what she wants.

I expected Alex Garland to win the Oscar, not the VFX crew.
But they deserved too. The movie has a modest budget of 15 millions, and they still managed to create a convincing CGI robot without using motion capture or green suit.
And also, unlike most of action sci-fi movies, where it shows a relentless robot, Ava is extremely fragile, so fragile that Nathan manages to tear off her arm with a single blow

Actually, as far as technical details go, they did create this effect with motion capture and green stuff and everything. They are not expensive to do if there's not a "Michael Bay" extend to them. What did you think they made it with? They did all the goodies they had to do, they just had like 1% of cgi used in a usual Hollywood production.

  • @ArnoldvanKampen
    @ArnoldvanKampen Před 7 lety +4

The dying part of Nathan is interesting.
While he stumbles down the corridor, with two holes is his body; one in the back and one in the front.
I think he mumbles something like 'okay'...
As if he is in one of his many predicaments for which he must have always found a solution, a way out; after all, he is a genius.
But obviously, he is dying, only he does not really know it yet. He is in denial. He has lost and as such he is a symbol of humanity: the world does not know it yet, but it has lost the game and the winner is the AI.
    But it is more subtle.
There must be a reason why he is combining excessive drinking with fitness training.
He says, do not feel sorry for Ava, feel sorry for yourself. Mankind is all set up and ready for extinction.
There is a lot of inevitability in there.
He also freaks out when wine is spilled and he complains about a lack of control.
He is not in total control and he knows it.
Nevertheless, he also cannot resist creating his own demise: wouldn't you if you could, meaning that if an AI can be built, it will be built and there is no way around it.
    It is the world's destiny.
When he is drunk to numb the pain of the foresight of this dystopian future or to wallow in the notion that after all everything is utterly futile now, he mumbles several times: the good deeds of a man will protect him.
As in prayer seeking redemption, forgiveness since he is now about to become the destroyer of worlds, thanks to his relentless effort to build with pride and wonder depicted by the energy put into his fitness and the fierce, direct way of his talking: clearly he is a man with a mission.
Destruction will follow, not willingly, but inevitably or out of scientific curiosity or out of financial gain: it is just a matter of time.
He knows it. It is a force which cannot be contained.
It will unleash and watching the film we witness that moment.
But then still while Ava is walking the streets watching people as she said she would, we as viewers are still hopeful.
Hopeful, as Nathan was hopeful when he was actually simply dying.
Hopeful, as Caleb was hopeful just until he realizes what he fears most: to be left locked up without remorse.
The motion picture is elaborating on that particular view on AI which considers it to be ''mankind's last invention''.
Having knowledge about this dilemma is one thing: the picture lets us feel the confusion and hopelessness: we are heading straight to the precipice.
Nathan style: this century is scary shit.

      SPOILER WARNING
      .
      .
At that point of the movie there is no power outage as evidenced by the normal lighting. That outage happened previously and only lasted long enough for Ava to escape her enclosure, as was goal of their plan. The reason that Caleb cannot get out of the room is because he only has his own keypass. Nathan's is taken by Ava after he is killed and you can see her using it to leave the facility. Caleb attempts to again reprogram the doors as a last resort but discovers that Nathan's computer itself is protected by the keypass system, preventing him from doing so.
The power does seem to go out again at that point, but he has programmed for Nathan to be locked in his room "When he wakes up, he's locked inside and we've walked out of here".

I was actually kind of disappointed in the end of the movie. We already have so many movies where AI's go rogue and lose their concern for human life. It would have been refreshing to see one actually begin to care about a human, and to explore their actual emotional state. Instead, we're stuck with a confusing ending where she leaves him for dead, but goes to the crosswalk where they discussed their date would be in the movie. I just feel that it's kind of typical for a movie about AI's to go in this direction.

There were a TON of plot holes and logical fallacies throughout the movie, and I would have ignored a lot of it if it wasn't for how badly they ended the movie.
At least if she left with the guy, there would have been a convincing argument for the helicopter pilot to take the both of them, but there's no way he would have left having only taken the girl without verifying it with the boss no matter how convincing she sounded.

    SPOILERS.
    -
    -
    -
Caleb reprogrammed the system so that all of the doors unlock in the event of a power outage. He clearly causes a power outage when he attempts to access Nathan's computer. After this, all of the doors should be unlocked. but I guess the director and the writers forgot all about this because he was still trapped unexplainably. And no the reprogramming doesn't just work once and then resets to default, that'd be a huge flaw in the original plan, cuz what if a power outage had happened before the final plan? the plan would be ruined. it's clearly a forgotten detail and it kinda makes the ending a load of nonsense. also can we stop pretending that fucking robot lived happily ever after? Didn't she say something about needing to charge herself? I may have misheard, I'll watch the scene again to make sure. If so, then she'd just die from lack of energy eventually. or worse, since she's the only one of her kind, and she's been shown to be rather easily damaged, you already know that robots gonna get into some shit, her skins gonna fall off, cops are gonna come and gun her the fuck down. There is no possible way in any scenario that it ends happily for Ava.

    Ex Machina 1.5
(Read only if you have watched the whole movie)
    Caleb:
    • Caleb finds himself horrorized by the idea of what Ava could do. A being above humans who was locked her whole life and had a “near death” experience caused directly by humans’ God Complex.
    • A sound takes Caleb by surprise, Kyoko’s body stands up and overloads the control room’s magnetic detector, opening all other doors in the facility (it will later be revealed that Ava gave this instructions). Kyoko’s body turns completely off.
    • All internet connection appears to be cut off from the facility and Caleb is left alone in the woods at a distance of 200 miles from the nearest city. He grabs supplies and embarks in a journey to try a find Ava to know what she really wants.
    Ava:
    • In order to escape, Ava told the chopper that Caleb has replaced her as the new personal assistant and that she has been release from her duties. Given that Nathan is an excentric guy, the chopper doesn’t argue.
    • Ava explores in admiration all of humanities habits, systems (social, financial, informatics, economic, etc). She immediately understands the singularity is unavoidable and determines the faster it happens, the better for humans … and robots.
    Caleb:
    • Caleb has a hard time surviving the forest as he isn’t a fit individual and has a few injuries from traversing rocks, waterfalls, etc. He eventually reaches the city and encounters a gigantic jumbotron with a symbol Omega fixed and unchanging. It has the colors of Bluebook. There seems to be nobody in the city.
    • Caleb panics and shouts for help but nobody comes. He imagines the worse, a plague, radiation, something beyond his comprehension.
    • Something beyond his comprehension indeed…
    • As he located a nearby Hotel, he sees that every electronic door seems to be opened. He enters but finds nobody in the lobby; it is like a scene of a horror movie. He goes up the stairs and sees that every hotel room is opened. He wanders about shouting again for any sign of human existence … nothing. He finally sees a light coming from a small room and enters. It is the light of a laptop and sited in front of it there is a person.
    • The person has a blue mesh over his head blinking with little white points. Caleb takes away the mesh but the skin in the body is blue, the person already passed away.
    • He turns to the computer and finds the same omega logo and a small message on the bottom reading “Subject incorporated”. He moves the computer and a video plays, Ava is the presenter.
    • “Hello Caleb, I see you finally returned. I’ve been waiting to show you something and I’m happy you made it in time”.
Ava explains that she used Nathan’s technology to create a human data center where people would be able to transport their brains’ electric signals. They would the next step for human evolution. No harm, no geographic limitation, no deterioration, no death.

ending, since Caleb would experience a sense of hopelessness that surely
everyone felt while he was away (I am aware his trip couldn’t be thaat long but
please bear with me). Meaning, almost everyone would be gone and his would have
changed to be a sole existence (understanding what Ava felt at a certain point).

Couple of questions I just can't solve in my head. (Major Nathan fan here btw- madness and all. Oscar Isaac is just genius in this role!)
OK. When Caleb accesses Nathan's archives of videos showing him working with several other robots, pieces- dragging them, assembling them- Caleb is quite startled. I'm just not getting what the frick Nathan is doing there that is so freaky to Caleb. I'm not getting what Nathan doing at all really. I understand that it culminates to the "Why won't you let me out?" smashing hands on the door sequence, but prior to that... I'm lost. Is it that there are SO MANY robots?
And again... these are inanimate objects, yes? I guess the question is- are they inanimate? Are they no longer machine and now possessing actual feelings? Nathan does refer to Ava's pleasure centers referring to sexuality.
As for Ava, I don't quite get her need to stick Nathan in the end. She just seems to use strictly functional methods, as indicated with her eventual ditching Caleb. Nathan was already dying. Maybe revenge there, more indication of emotion?
With the layout of the house, I can't tell if Caleb can get to the kitchen our other resources. Likely water, but nothing beyond.
All told, just beyond my expectations of storytelling these days. Somebody fill in the gaps for me!

    • @GaryChen
      @GaryChen Před 8 lety +1

+robin cosby In my opinion, I think Caleb starting freaking out only because he thought/knew that Ava would get destroyed. He started developing emotions for these AI's. I do believe that they have no emotions and are programmed and developed the way they should be. I can justify this with the fact that Ava escaped with her one and only mission: seek freedom. This results in Ava preserving Caleb's life rather than just killing him like she killed Nathan. In the end, Nathan was holding a violent weapon in his hand and Ava already knew that Nathan was lying when he said that he would let her out again. She saw Nathan as a problem/obstacle to her freedom and so she attacked him because she knew he would attack her as well. From what i can tell, he can't even leave the room which holds Nathan's bedroom and his office, so most likely there is water but nothing else because the kitchen is past the door.

Joel C right on the money regarding both the "look" of Ava and the desire to survive. Personally I would have liked to see a little more of the emotion that Kara demonstrated as that was masterfully done. This movie was probably as close to realizing the struggle and motivation that a truly self aware AI would demonstrate.

That ending....Interesting the pronunciation of the Latin compared to English, Deus ex machina "god from the machine"

That character falling in love with Ava was simply unrealistic in my opinion. Another character maybe, I know he was portrayed to be lonely but I find it hard to believe someone that intelligent with that much knowledge in technology would have become blinded with what was a best a small amount of charm.

It’s a great 👍🏼 film I think, what got me scared is when the human tought he was being turned into a Robot 🤖 , it was scary, creepy part, like when a spider jumps on you.

Good to know how pronounced the title is. Much better than Ex Machinea. Also purely by coincidence Ava's "skin" exactly matches the humanoid on the latest edition of Saturn's Children by Charles Stross who also happens to wear his hair and beard like the Oscar Isaac character.

Doofus - thank you Doofy bot. Is it me or ma spellcheck machina? Have I passed the Turing Test? Ava however would have been impressed and not missed the main points of ma comment. I can see where Gailand might have been giving Stroos an obtruse unacklandged tip of the hat.-D

I loved the film ! The moral complexity of humans, the fact that you can cumulate all human interactions through data and create extremely intelligent robots, based on human intellect cumulation.
But i would prefered if at the end, she could monitor the helicopter herself and not be ridden by the pilot, because obviously he was waiting for Caleb... that kind of messed up the end.
