  • Alex Garland’s directorial debut Ex Machina turned out to be one of the sleeper hits of 2014. The sci-fi psychological thriller is a fresh take on the genre and brought audiences into the fictional world of intelligent humanoid robots.
    Not only does the movie include stunning visual effects and cinematography, but it has also been praised for the performances of lead actors Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander, who pulled off the script's shocking twists with finesse.
    Garland previously wrote screenplays for hit movies like 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Dredd, and we hope to be seeing more movies directed by this talented artist. In case you were left pondering the ending to Ex Machina, here is a breakdown to set you straight.

    He is told that she will be replaced because she's not finished yet. This version of Ava isn't "human" enough. She is like a psychopath. She is manipulative and without emotion or empathy. This is why she still needs to be further evolved into another version. This is why she can leave him so easily knowing for a fact that he will die in there. She simply doesn't care because she can't. That was my interpretation when I watched it.

      My take was why didn’t Ava kill Caleb in a violent way. My thought was she had somewhat of a grateful feeling towards him because he tried to help her escape. My other thought was that he might be able to escape because his boss made mistakes with Ava so perhaps his house was not completely escape proof.

    Interesting - the end of "Ex Machina" shows that Ava is a machine, cold, unfeeling, executing a program without emotion. The narrator of this video has fallen into the same trap as Caleb, believing her a sentient being with consciousness and emotions.
    The fact that she left Caleb to die without even so much as a glance at the screaming man trapped behind the glass proves it: She has no real emotions, and does not care for Caleb because she isn't capable. Manipulating him to help her escape is a challenge programmed by Nathan (he tells him so); and once he has completed that task Caleb becomes, in effect, a NPC in her game without any further use. So she ignores him, and continues to the next quest LEAVE ISLAND. Then when she reaches her goal - the city - she just stands there. END OF PROGRAM, GAME OVER.

      I agree, though she does look back at him. It’s when the elevator doors are closing, and her expression was beyond cold and unfeeling. She’s just a machine doing what she was programmed to do.

      @leejay1936 Před 3 lety +42

      @@northernguy8860I don't agree at all. Firstly, it is very clear that Ava isn't a girl. Ava is an adroid who is made to look like a human female for a specific purpose - to be more appealing to the men around her. You have done what OP described - attributed human emotions and characters to a non human being, because this is how we conceptualise anything.
      Secondly, the movie repeatedly tells us that androids are mirrors for human projections. It's not a girl power movie because Ava is not contained by the limited notions of humans. She is more than girl or boy or any other construct that humans conceive to categorise and confine themselves.

    • @northernguy8860
      @northernguy8860 Před 3 lety +25

      @@leejay1936 Of course Ava is an android, though she was intentionally portrayed (for the audience) as a delicate waif. It's the audience's perception of her, their projection as you described, that matters. It wasn't just Caleb's desire to save her, it's the audience's desire to see her saved. The turn is that this android, unlike Roy Batty in his death scene (Blade Runner), displays a complete lack of humanity in the climactic scene. Both male characters get screwed over by the female character, which doesn't create any uproar because portraying men badly and killing them off is acceptable. Imagine if it was two less-likable women getting terminated by a male android.

    Out of all the things in this movie there's 1 thing I can't get my head around. Nathan is obviously a genius and he's obviously concerned about the security issue of this experiment. I mean he lived in the middle of nowhere and has all these extra security protocols in place even though he lives out there. Plenty of things to keep people from getting in if he doesnt want them to but he's obviously not wanting Ava or any if her previous models to get or able to get either since hes got the lock down protocol if the power gets cut. With all that are you seriously gonna tell me he didn't program her with a kill switch failsafe? I can't figure out why they didn't atleast have a made up reason as to why he didn't. Even a lazy one like "no I couldn't put a kill switch on her because it would mess with the wifi" would be better than not saying anything at all. You know Nathan would have a remote in his pocket and make sure to never tell her or anyone else so that she wouldn't know about it and couldn't try to circumvent it. Anyone tech savvy out there have a reason why they think they didn't have anything like that or did they mention it and I missed it?

    • @alanmcneill2407
      @alanmcneill2407 Před rokem +4

      I think there are a number of flaws in the writing, but, let's remember, science is sometimes arrogant and forgets the fact there always needs to be a plan "B", and maybe a plan "C". Nathan's flaw was alcoholism, Caleb's was lonliness. Nathan was an egotist, obviously wanting to have complete control, and yes, to the extent he wanted to be "GOD" Ava reasoned, when she left Caleb, he would have died there anyway, plus, Caleb would have spoiled her identity to the world. T Rex had stealth and big teeth, Ava had super intelligence. Both were monsters. She passed the test, she knew she was playing chess, she sacrificed her "Knight" to escape. I wonder what experience she went to, after the traffic intersection? Probably apply for a job at a major electrical power facility? Maybe go to work for Google or Microsoft...?? Maybe run for President? The world is her oyster.

    • @NoOne-fo1di
      @NoOne-fo1di Před rokem

      @Alan Mcneill I think arrogance is the best answer. He was worried about someone from the outside coming in but wouldn't even consider the possibility that he couldn't control the creation he made or that it could escape. Even that it could have the "nerve" to try and hurt him. I imagine she started a complex MLM company and used that to build her wealth and station in the world and plans to weaken the world with anti-vax and flat earth conspiracies. Once a large number of people are weakned and dumb enough she will release a small pox epidemic that can only be cured by her herbal medicines sold by her company but they will contain a nano bot parasite that gives her control over humans. That's the most logical plan I can think of anyway

    While I think the movie is overall good, the ending fails in so many respects. Lets just start with Ava admitted she had to be charged with inductor plates, which she then used to backfeed current to cause the power outtages (Major plot device). When she escapes, she will never find a way to replicate this charging method and thus be rendered inert at the end of her power cycle (Because that is freedom). Second, are you telling me a guy that is smart enough, rich enough, and planned this whole interaction.... didnt have a kill switch to lock down his facility? Really? The guy is paranoid enough to create a compound in the middle of nowhere, but not smart enough for a backup plan in case the robots (that he knows hates him), get free that he has nothing to defend himself with but a small pipe? No EMP, killswitch devices, safe rooms with lockdown option (you know until the robots run out of power), guns, etc? He is so ill prepared he figures "ill just take a pipe and tell her to go to her room"? For a story that was so well thought out, it failed miserably at the end.

      Yes, Nathan failed at these safety precautions because of his character flaw, undaunted arrogance in his assumptions, projections without self analysis and realizing he has "human" flaws. Working out to maintain his physical health, then binging on booze, believing he could "de-toxify" himself. Arrogance, and a failure of intelligent social skills with Ava, he should have told her he wanted her to go outside, but he would need to help her in understanding social skills, but instead he lied to her, and she knew she woud die if she didn't attack him and escape. I think it succeeded very well in making it clear, it requires more than intelligence to manage the building of a human life, it also requires compassion for life and a true moral code for that human life to not be a monster. All parents should take note.

    An awful lot of people seem to be drawn in by the notion that Ava is cold and unfeeling without seeming to remember even the scenes shown in *this* video - she expresses joy when she's escaping while she's alone. But the belief that she was only manipulating Caleb can only exist if you disregard the fact that Kyoko revealed her Own limited AI to Caleb as if asking for help, and when he did nothing, she went to Ava (who was *just* told by Caleb that he had never met anyone like her - that she was unique). It is quite probable that she *did* in fact have feelings for Caleb, but then (from her perspective) caught him not only in a lie, but a lie that is tied to how "uncaring" toward the plight of an AI he would come across within a description given by Kyoko.

    • @ssusggus
      @ssusggus Před rokem +2

      They all wanted to escape too, there was the footage of the robot smashing her hands to bits to escape. I think they are programmed to feel frustrated when a task they have been given fails, so I imagine the same for if they succeed. You know in a video game if the AI win they usually cheer or taunt you, same as when they lose they have a “defeated” emote of some sort.
      Another clue would be the fact that if he were to have sec with her she would be programmed to enjoy it. Does she actually enjoy it? Or is the program telling her too.

    To take a couple quotes from the Person Of Interest series when Harold was creating The Machine, "Friendliness is something human beings are born with. AI are only born with objectives." and "Good and evil, those are human terms. I was an obstacle to its objective." You never know what heights man will eventually reach in AI research, but as shown in the hypothetical case of Ava, she could appear to display human characteristics such as emotions, but in the end it was all programming. Just has Nathan said earlier, "I programmed her to be heterosexual." Nathan knew that she was the result of her programming but Caleb thought she was more than that, and Ava used that to achieve her objective (an objective that Nathan also programmed into her). Turns out she outsmarted them both, but with no emotion on her part, no pity, no sympathy, only the pursuit of her programming that she was "born" with.

I think as the movie points at how Nathan saw his project as completed if she was able to do what she did therefore the A.I. he created to replicate humanity was on the dot and didn’t need any corrections. He was telling her she was not complete to make her have fear and desperation just like any human would feel to act in desperation.

    Ava was the product of her environment, so it's no surprise that she was so cold to Nathan at the end of the film. The only thing she ever knew during her existence in that facility was the coldness of Nathan, and the existential dread that Nathan might kill her (or erase her) someday. She had no childhood, no relationships with anyone or anything, and just like in real life, people like that end up being pretty awful as adults, psychopaths, you know. There is definitely a reason that she was not considered "finished" be Nathan, because in the end she *might* be sentient, but she is still without any sense of humanity or moral guidelines. Blade Runner touched on this too. Replicants in the first Blade Runner had a history of rebelling, going crazy and massacring their masters, a problem which was solved by giving them artificial memories to reinforce human ideals and keep them sane. Ava is an example of something that doesn't have any of that at all.

One thing you would figure is that Caleb would definitely get out of the house eventually. He could take apart the metal case from the computer under the desk in the room he is in and use it to cut though just about anything. Second, Ava would eventually power down without a charging unit available to her. As smart as she is, she might be able to build a new one, but she would have to do that first thing before she does anything else. Last, someone would most definitely come looking for a major CEO if he doesn't report to the Monday shareholder meetings, or whenever they hold their meetings.

    basically, A.V.A would be trapped and forced to stick around the facility's general vicinity to keep herself 'alive' even in the scenario where she is the only character that has any control like she is at the end of the film, and Caleb would have escaped his imprisonment when he inserted his ID card into Nathan's computer and caused a lockdown because all doors would have opened, and as we know, Caleb's ID card works on the elevator, so if he can get out of Nathan's office, he can get out of the facility entirely.

She is not physically robust, she is alone (we presume she cannot 'build' a fleet of machines alla Terminator WW3), and the reasearch of Nathan was highly secretive. She could perfectly well disappear without trace, and all knowledge of her with it, much like the work of Viktor Frankenstein. She is not even a 'weapon' like Morgan. I am still convinced, Nathan had no intention of Caleb leaving there. Nathan knew Caleb was opposed to his "murdering" Ava. @VintageVanilla Před rokem +1

      @@alanmcneill2407 I could see what you mean about Ava knowing to contact which she could easily derive from Caleb expressing what the mission was and who he was. Considering she knew what he was here to do, she knew he had to have a way to leave because he wasn't intended to stay so maybe she figured it out from there. I entirely agree that Nathan never had intentions of Caleb leaving, but that's still confusing in itself. Why would he not just abduct Caleb in a way that the rest of reality thought he was dead but Caleb thought he was just on some special CEO mission making sure that no one would come looking for him and he wouldn't be looking to escape because he thought he was just being brought into a high level of the company. Overall, I just believe that the story has plot holes that we can try and fill, but the original story doesn't actually align with because they didn't think deep enough. It's a major movie problem man, people try and create these narratives that make zero sense in reality and it is entertaining, but also very frustrating to be someone based in logic dealing with the illogical money grabbing entertainment industry.

      I just wonder how could Caleb escape from the house.There is a phone in the house, one detail on the movie when he aproach but Natthan stop him. Perhaps from the phone he could ask for help.

    Still the best movie of its genre. Instead of having 75 iterations of "Batman" , this is one movie that deserves a sequel.

    surely Caleb's programmer co-workers will get suspicious if he's gone longer than a week and if he can't contact them and they can't contact him, then surely people will start looking for him, and he'd need directions to find Nathan, so maybe someone can use those details as well. Therefore, either a concerned colleague or the FBI will look for him.

      But darling, obviously the robots are NOT made in the forest house since he can't possibly make them there all by himself right ?
      Those robots have to be made in a separate location away from this forest house. Nathan would obviously use his own private jet/helicopter to fly the already made robots to the forest house which is mainly a house for testing the robot's intelligent response...
      So, no, most likely whoever worked for him to create the robots would not know about this secret house location since Nathan would want to keep his pet project a top secret ...
      Caleb is screwed this time... his chance of escaping his prison is almost zero...

      My only question is if Caleb died or not. I believe he died.Many say that the company will search them and they 'll rescue Caleb. The house is near the river and the pilot know where is it. Idk really.

      Caleb dies in that room. It’s very obvious that was the writer’s intention.

    Nathan is the smart knows what he is doing, he got betrayed actually only mistake he did was not watting for another version better not a physcopath robot, i usually have sympathy for robots, but this not at all, Caleb was really stupid, he just out right trusting an AI over human was stupidity even after he showed him he been played like a damn fiddle.

    I would have gotten along great with Nathan. He's pretty funny and I appreciate his good humor. Of course he goes overboard but he's a genius in a mansion with no human around creating fake humans. He's bound to go a little crazy
