      I agree...However, being an umpire myself, I believe all of them should have thick skin....PERIOD. Coaches are geared to win and calls matter rather they are right or wrong. This was so minor and that ump doesn't need to call games if something that small bothers him. So the hell what if the coach doesn't like the call? Unless, he is belligerent. I'll give him that one short time. Then I will warn him. I have umpired for more than 17 years and I have only kicked out 7 coaches and that includes tournaments.

      @@tawtam1 I'm also an umpire, not as long as you but I find that I have a thick skin. You want to argue judgement calls? Doesn't bother me. But there's no way I'm going to some guy sitting on a bucket 20 feet away complaining about inside and outside pitches. I'm shutting that down quickly

    • @tawtam1
      @tawtam1 Před 5 lety

      @@NSUMDFS First of all, if I am going to kick out a coach for questioning strikes and balls they will know that during the plate meeting. Most of that time when I have done that it was because there were some issues with other coaches in tournament play or the state play offs. I realize every ump is not the same. However, the umpire is in charge of the field and everyone knows that. You don't have to throw your weight around and have some understanding that coaches are going to fight for their players and team...as well they should. The biggest requirement I have is to be consistent then coaches don't have a reason to question your calls because you are calling it both ways. In this case we don't know what he said during the plate meeting. What I do know is that the coach didn't do enough to warrant him being ejected from the game. Lastly, there are other options that are not in the rule book but work. Telling the coach to get into the dugout and remain there. Next, tell the coach you are discussing it any longer.....I usually say....That's enough coach. Again, are these requirements? NO. However, I think they are good rules to follow. Why? This appears to be city, rec or tournament baseball because after ejecting the coach he didn't bother to right any information down in his book. I do know in varsity ball or college coaches can request the league that you no longer call their ball games and they will send other officials at least for a while to that schools games. The more you eject, the more that can happen and you can get called less and less for games. Which means less money in your pocket. I have heard worse from coaches and especially those that have good teams.

    I've been umpiring a long time, everything from Little League (all levels including Big League) to high school to American Legion, and a little college. Oh, and the dreaded men's "recreational" leagues, which are anything but recreational. There are some things you do and some things you don't do and there's a lot wrong with the game management in this video.
    1. If this coach is out there about balls and strikes (which is what it looks like), that discussion went on far too long. You can't argue balls and strikes - if the coach goes there, maybe let him say a few words, then give him a stop sign, tell him "That's enough" and walk away. You don't need to tell him that he can't argue balls and strikes, he knows that. If he continues (runs through the stop sign), tell him "I said that's enough" and dump him if he continues or just dump him depending on how things go. If it's high school, you now have to give the coach a "written warning" and restrict him to the dugout before he gets tossed unless his actions are egregiously unsportsmanlike. That's really stupid because most coaches generally run through the warning and bench restriction and get tossed anyway.
    2. Since the umpire allowed the coach to have such a long discussion, don't toss him once he turns and starts to go back to the dugout unless he says something really stupid, personal about you, or profane (this looks like high school or high school age, not MLB, so that is an ejectable offense). Generally, if you toss a coach once he turns his back and starts to walk away, you look like the aggressor instead of the coach.
    3. Once you toss him, turn and walk away - don't engage him in more discussion. Nothing good is going to come from that. If he wants to continue, make him walk after you. That makes him look like the aggressor and there's no reason to continue any discussion with the now ejected coach. Your partner should come in and get the coach off of you if he continues to argue. Also, don't do a second ejection mechanic. You've already tossed him - don't toss him again.
    4. Don't call the police unless you've been threatened or there is a genuine fear for your safety or someone else's safety. I usually give a coach 60 seconds to get off the field or at least start to get off the field. If he refuses to leave, that's grounds for a forfeit but not a reason to call the police.
    I won't comment on the backwards hat...

      @aussiesurfer805 Před 2 lety +2

      mmmm ok - good detailed and educational summary about umpiring ... cheers .... but, the criticism of this situation is a bit broad and without justification I'd say...
      No. 1 - yep agree
      No. 2 - why criticise him when in fact the situation could very easily, and more than likely than not, have fallen into the only reason you gave for actually throwing a coach as he walks away.
      No. 3 - valid from the video - even as a non-umpire I was thinking - dude just turn and don't engage him ...
      No. 4 - could very well be the reason he asked someone to call the cops - you really have not possible way of saying this did or didn't happen
      Again, great summary of umpire management, my friend, but criticising and essentially stating that your "colleague" was in the wrong for 1/2 of your points, without any evidence to support this is unfair .... and IMO at least, only contributes to the US' appalling culture wrt abusing part time or volunteer umpires in sport ...

    • @billbell2311
      @billbell2311 Před 2 lety +5

      @@aussiesurfer805 Most of this falls on the umpire for practicing poor game management. Whether it's his fault or his association's fault for not providing sufficient training, the umpire shares responsibility for not properly managing this situation. Nothing can be done about this situation, but perhaps, newer less experience umpires can learn for this umpire's mistakes. We learn from our own mistakes and the mistakes of others.
      No. 2 - the umpire should have tossed the coach sooner. You never allow an argument or "discussion" to go on that long.
      No. 3 - poor game management. Never engage once you toss the coach. At that point, it's your partners job to get the coach off your back.
      No. 4 - point taken; however, there is little in the video to support an actual physical threat. When that happens, good game management dictates you clear the field and vacate the area, and potentially forfeit the game to the other team. Physical threats demand swift and positive action to protect everyone in the area - not just a simple call to the local police.
      I have been a volunteer and am a part time umpire. I'll blame fans, coach, players, and parents for 80% of the problems we encounter on the field. The other 20% is on us either through poor game management, poor judgment, lack of knowledge of the rules and their interpretation, or just a crappy attitude. While we can't necessarily fix the 80%, we can fix the 20%. Blindly supporting a fellow umpire who failed to practice good game management does nothing to fix the 20%. This entire incident points to a lack of training on the part of the umpire's association. I've been doing this for 52 years. I stick by what I wrote.

      @@billbell2311 You really do make some excellent points there Bill… and have helped educate me in the game … so combined with re-reading your original post and respecting your experience, I whole heartedly and 100% concede …🥺. 👍
      I also apologise for what i realise now was my misinterpretation of your main gripe in point 2. The bit I focussed on, being about tossing someone as they’re walking away, was not the main point at all , but just provided as a little bit of bonus information for those who have been playing along at home 😜… I completely ignored your main reason for No. 2, which is most definitely valid and clear as crystal from the video
      Thanks again for your efforts and time to explain and share your knowledge with others and me - I’m thinking the game down here in Australia could do with some people such as yourself… 👍
      I’ve only been involved in coaching baseball for a couple of years, but I’m actually a very experienced basketball coach and former player.. I’ve coached basketball at an elite State and national level for 20+ years, after playing at a state rep level for a ling time too…. So, I initially thought the change to baseball, especially at the grass roots level I’m currently involved with, would be easy for me to do .. i would just need some good assistants to help with the more technical playing and strategy aspects … Crikey, was I wrong !!
      The whole approach to coaching, players, game day, and especially umpires is so very different and unique in baseball - I thought those bits would be the easy ones … nope - cultural shock 😳.. ..
      Im slowly getting there - I think , with these videos and discussions helping me as well.. I’m on a mission though, as I have two teenage daughters and I’m now part of a small core group down here in Western Australia; working very hard to develop the game of baseball for girls (of all abilities).. .
      It’s a relatively new sport here, for the girls at least… it’s well established with a national professional league for men …
      one of my girls is absolutely crazy for baseball, and both of them actively press for equality and want to show that girls can do everything boys can , and that they should be given similar opportunities that the boys get given to just play and develop in their chosen sport … personally, I blame their mother for all this … 😜 but they’ve won me over and I’m onboard having completely jumped over from coaching young men in basketball ..
      So the more I learn about baseball from people such as you, the more confident in the game I feel, the more i enjoy it and the more I can fight for the cause (i’ve actually become quite the feminist myself now Bill 😁 … I blame the wife for that too ) …

    This looks like high school level, maybe winter ball because of the coaches uniforms (shorts) . Coaches who coach high school winter ball are not high school coachers they just volunteer and come from the lower levels of baseball. Some umpires come from the lower levels and do winter ball to get some experience in the high school level. So I think we have here are two people one is learning how to coach high school level and one how to umpire high school level.

I guess the ump popped up like he was going to call strike, then gestured to the base with his right hand (that's a no no -- left hand is information, right hand is strike and out), so maybe the coach thought he called it a strike. Hat backwards, calls time before all runners have reached their bases on the bases loaded walk. For anyone who knows anything about umpiring, the alarm bells should have gone off right there.
    Umpire caps come in four different bill sizes: 2 stitch, 4 stitch, 6 stitch, and 8 stitch. The stitch refers to the number of stitch lines that can be put on the different lengths of the bill. The 2 stitch is sometimes called a "beanie"; the 8 stitch is a full size bill like the players wear. I started off using the 4 stitch and ended by using an 8 stitch the last 3 or 4 years before my knees gave out. The fact that this umpire is wearing his cap backwards tells me he really has no interest in umpiring other than the money. I spent many a day practicing how to remove my mask without knocking my cap off and many more days going over the rules. An umpire's appearance goes a long way towards telling you how much he cares about his craft.

      baseball empires as a whole are the worst out of all sports, scientifically. their judgement calls are unsound. MLB home plate umpires make incorrect calls at least 20% of the time - one in every five calls. those are the best in the biz, apparently. Baseball umpires, they should be exterminated, like literally lined up against a wall and put out of their misery. They obviously have mental defects that we need to eugenically cull.
