    Scrap metal dealers should be charged with the same sentence as the catalytic converter thief because the scrap metal dealer is also making money off the stolen catalytic converter. This is the equivalent of going into a bank and the teller giving the thief money out of someone's bank account without the owner of the bank account knowing that money has been stolen out of his/her account.

    It took me 2 months to replace my stolen catalytic converter due to supply shortages. After it was replaced, the check engine did not go away. They somehow damaged the cables going to the cpu and it had to be completely replaced. Another month of wait for the part. These thieves are a plague and they have to be dealt with more heavily. Especially the assholes buying all of these stolen goods.

    My catalytic converter got stolen January 2022 and it took 8 MONTHS to replace! I'm glad this guy got caught.

    Scrap dealers buying these stolen converters are just as guilty of the crime, and need to be held accountable. Easier fix than chasing and hopefully catching the thief doing the stealing. With no buyer, this stealing would dry up in a split second.

    When people commit crimes that really effect people's day to day. That is unforgivable. You potentially steal a person's converter, when they have rent, kids, or house to pay and then ruin the day possibly month because they can't afford to replace the converter, just to have it stolen again. Probably worst if that person depends on the car to make a living.

      Mine got stolen from under my truck that had 2. I've got 4 kids and my truck had been parked in my front yard for 4weeks while saving for a transmission. The day it arrived and was towing it to the mechanic was when I figured it out. I can't even begin to say what it's doing to us. I wish I would of caught the guy who did it in the act. It almost cost my son from his end of the year field trip too. I don't do credit cards. Never had one. So I had to borrow the money from family to pay for it. The stress from it all is not ok. Just because some junkie doesn't want to work to pay for their dope of choice.

    No it is not a fair sentence, to be fair he would have to make every one of his victims financially hole and undo all the unnecessary expenses to the environment every car that got totaled would have to be replaced plus a fine for forcing those cars off the road long before they were used up . This is nowhere near stiff in a sentence .

    This happened to my same car twice. When I first got it and then when I loaned it to my dad. My father felt really bad when it happened cause I was trying to help him out with loaning him my car. I told him it wasn’t his fault. Just evil people

    Arresting these thieves and giving them a stiff sentence will not stop this crime, there are many others like him. Law enforcement needs to go after the buyers and auto shop owners who knowingly sell stolen CAT's.
    There are laws on the books which require that people selling used CAT's have to be properly identified which includes a written record of their identification. The buyers and auto shop owners are ignoring the law, for obvious reasons.

      Not every state is the same. Some don't require any proof, but you can only turn in 1 a day. So they go through loopholes and hire people to distribute them all over the city at different places every day.

      Well, what no one really talks about is that only the small time thieves sell them to scrap yards. The biggest thieves just process them on their own & sell the metals to a precious metal dealer, completely bypassing the scrap yard all together. That is the most profitable way because they are so easy to process.

    I thought felony possession of a firearm alone was 10 years. This should have been much higher. The AR in the car must have been illegal too. He pointed a gun at the man trying to protect his property. I think at least 20 years would have been more fair for the community.

    There is a backorder of many months to get the catalytic converter to replace the stolen one, so these despicable a-holes are basically taking the transportation away from countless of their victims and causing a lot of pain in people's lives. I know someone who lost his job because he didn't have a car and couldn't get to work. These people are disgusting.

    There is this car dealer M_ _ SERVICE DEPARTMENT at Ogden Ave/cor. S Commons dr., Aurora, IL. Unknown to the car owners, they changed their new car’s parts to old used parts. Next thing you know soon as you drive out of their shop, you’ ll hear lots of noise, I.g., like knocks, that wasn’t there before. They changed unnecessarily your new cars exhaust system including Exhaust center w/catalytic converter. When the only problem with the car is a missing screw of the part under the car that hold the exhaust.
    It is so unthinkable. Their service department makes more money than selling their new cars.

    I hope that law passes, it won’t stop it by any means but now there will be far less buyers. Couldn’t imagine as many scrap yard owners are willing to take the backlash if they have to document or hide the stolen property

    I just had my catalytic converter stolen a couple of days ago. The headache to replace it and install a metal shield (out of pocket), renting a car while I wait for a 2-4 month waiting list is demoralizing. I'm a disabled person, on a fixed income, and need a car to get around because of very limited mobility. They made a couple of hundred out of this, but I'll have to spend savings I wasn't expect to tap into for years. So, make an example out of these thugs. I've been watching videos. Some of these repeat offenders just get out on the same day. And still have their driver's license. And they just go back to doing it the next day. Too easy.

    My exhaust fell off my car and pep boys told me I needed a new catalytic converter and it would all be over 1500 bucks. They took way to long and were jerks so I took it somewhere else where they were shocked they told me I needed a new catalytic converter. It ended up costing me 700 bucks. We think they wanted to scrap mine for themselves and sell me a new one that I never needed.
