      A couple of points:
-Not sure if Peter knew this but there is a MEU/SOC with the carrier groups which consists of a lot of Marines and contingent of Marine special operations (and probably some SEALs or other special operations teams). I do think one reason the carrier group is there is deterrence because like it or not, we have to defend Israel bc if in the off chance someone takes Tel Aviv, they now have nukes and a bunch of intel that will set CIA and the rest of the 5 eyes back decades.
-That said, even if you didn't think deterrence is necessary, given the current situation i.e. hundreds of hostages, many locations they could be split up and hidden, and the fact Gaza is completely controlled by Hamas at the moment means IF they do attempt a hostage rescue it will be unlike any other. This is not like Iraq, Afghanistan, or Somalia where infils are as cut and dry as infils can be. It's possible they have to conduct many simultaneous operations and the carrier groups provide cover for large troop movements and also provide ample air support should things go sideways
-Additionally, Gaza is not the only potential hostage rescue mission that may be necessary, if the regional uprising continues to expand, may need to resort to drastic measures to get people out of countries and embassies - Biden doesn't want another Benghazi
-Lastly, given the potential for militias to get ballsy, all those ships provide protection to the operators and their support, for this mission, I don't think there is such thing as over kill or too many options

I enjoy listening to Peter's views on a range of issues, but think he's miles off regarding the aircraft carriers. Aircraft carrier fleets exist to project power. America is sending a message that it's still the only superpower and still a big player in the middle east. The message reassures allies including Israel and Saudi and is intended to deter Iran and it's proxies that may be tempted to start a larger regional war.

A US amphibious landing ship has all the capablities for a hostage rescue (including f35s). Most of the reason for having f35s on these ships was to expand special forces' capabilities using these smaller ships rather than a whole ass aircraft carrier group. 2 U.S. super carriers and destoryers will essentially have the same strike potential of Israel (a lil exaggeration but not really). The whole reason yoid pit an aircraft carrier group is idk, in the event rhey go in for the hostages, Israel would likely already be invading Gaza by land, sea, and air. Youd post a aircraft carrier group if things escalated from there.

We'd fly in our hostage rescue units and likley have. Yes, carrier groups (plural...) are there as a warning to other enemies of Israel that the US will act if they do, and have already shot down missiles and drones headed for Israel.

Singapore is somewhat more densely populated than Gaza. 6m+ people in 700 sq km vs 2m in 400sq km in Gaza. It’s the people that makes the difference. One is more interested to make more friends and money, the other is constantly scheming how they can kill jews and push them into the sea - even to the extent of ripping out water and sewage pipes and repurposing them to make rockets. If the people and their poor excuse for a government focus their energies on improving their lot, Gaza will not be in the sad state it is in today.

Peter, in an ideal world, prison would be where the trouble-makers go. Prison is where you put people who've announced their intention to destroy you, and do violence against you. Gaza is not a prison- thousands of Gazans had work permits to travel into Israel. Now we know they gathered security information and maps used in the terrorist attack on Oct 7th.
When Gaza was under Israeli control, the economy was pretty good. When Israel got out, they left behind the entire infrastructure for an entire agricultural/floral export industry. The first thing the new residents did was destroy all the greenhouses.
The Palestinians are more concerned with committing acts of terrorism against civilians than they are about building a functional society. Through their hatred, their resentment, their violence they've built their own prison.

If Gaza is an open air prison, the Arab countries are every bit as responsible for it as Israel, because they refuse to incorporate the Palestinians into their own countries. They've purposely kept the Palestinians locked down in refugee status for nearly a century to use as a cudgel against Israel. The open air prison argument is shit when the first thing that they do upon leaving Gaza is to go killing civilians door to door. The Palestinians have lost all moral high ground with such actions. I recognize the distinction between the Palestinians and Hamas, but it's a distinction without a huge amount of difference.

It is so unfortunate that the Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat made the decision to not signed the peace accords with Israel (which were negotiated by Bill Clinton) in the late 1990s. Under that plan, the Palestinians are going to be given significant chunk of land, financial assistance international recognition, the ability to stand up a formal army, and would’ve been on a path to nationhood. Instead, Arafat decided that it wasn’t enough and he wanted the entirety of the land of Israel instead of just the chunk that he was offered, and so he decided to reject the entire thing and now we have the situation that we live with today.
