Countertenor John Holiday stars in the aria 'Ah, ch'infelice!' from Antonio Vivaldi's cantata 'Cessate, omai cessate', RV684 [c.1720-1724], performed with the Academy of Ancient Music.
John has quickly established himself as a fast-rising singer to watch and “one of the finest countertenors of his generation” (Los Angeles Times). His voice has been praised as “a thing of astonishing beauty” (New Yorker), “arrestingly powerful, secure and dramatically high” (Wall Street Journal), “exceptional [and] strong...even in its highest range” (The New York Times) and “timeless”(Washington Post). Here he sings one of Vivaldi's most magnificent yet under-appreciated arias, depicting a shepherd weeping over his lost love, the pizzicato strings suggesting tears landing on the strings of his lyre.

He's a voice professor at Lawrence University, and his passion is teaching. LU is lucky to have him and he's very happy there.
Lucky students, to have a passionate teacher whose own voice is so good.
Is there a reason why this man is not more prominent in the musical life of this country? He not only has an instrument that equals or excels those of the currently popular countertenors, but a musicality and emotional and intellectual grasp of baroque music that is second to none. I sincerely hope we shall find much more of him on You Tube.
Considering he recently wowed John Legend on "The Voice", I think this country is going to be hearing a lot about him. :)

Unfortuantely the only continent that allows a commercial existence for a countertenor is Europe
His voice is unreal. Even the other musicians seem to be moved by playing with him.

John Holiday is a counter tenor with whom I was yet not familiar. What a wonderful discovery for me! The strength of his head voice is remarkable. I really enjoy this stanza of the Stabat Mater, but I really only heard Andreas Scholl sing it to my satisfaction. Today I have added John Holiday to that list. His performance is certainly to my satisfaction.

I love that he doesn't slide into his notes unless they are legato in the score, that is an excellent control that is honed through many hours of practice.

@@brookeggleston9314 The voice America is about popular talent and can the artists make it in the commercial world of entertainment. John Holiday is an incredible singer but sadly doesn't fit the bill for what the populace is looking for. For me personally, I could listen to him sing whatever genre he choses. Having been born (1943) at a time when music was so different, you would ballroom dance to it for example and later the creations that Beatles came up with, I love them all but some have became redundant, not so John Holiday.
What he has will always be popular as people come to discover him.
I've never paid attention to Opera! But this got my attention! UNBELIEVABLE!

My god he is amazing, beyond amazing. To be able to sing this and perform as well as he does on the voice is the DEFINITION of versatility. I will watch the voice this season because of him!
Same here--I watched The Voice finals last night for the first time because of John Holiday (who studied at my alma mater--SMU).
As far as Vivaldi is concerned, his sacred music speaks the most to my heart.

I don’t know whether this is his comfort range or not, but I did this once trying to counter some of my female partiture in my choir and it hurts. This is the highest range of contra tenor I’ve ever heard
