Movements 3-6 of La Foresta Incantata, by the Italian-born, London-based composer Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762), performed live by Academy of Ancient Music and Laurence Cummings on 28 October 2021 at Milton Court Concert Hall.
This is instrumental music for the 1754 pantomime 'La forêt enchantée' by the Italian impresario Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni (1695-1766).
~~~
The story relates an episode from Gerusalemme liberata, Torquato Tasso’s epic poem of the the First Crusade, published in 1593, somewhat in imitation of Orlando furioso. The Christians, attacking Jerusalem, must cut wood from a nearby forest to build their siege engines, but a spell cast by a Saracen sorcerer has left every tree possessed by malign spirits, such that no Christian hero, however bold, dare enter. Eventually the knight Rinaldo attempts the task, and is surprised to find that the enchanted wood offers him birdsong, sweet-smelling flowers, and nymphs playing musical instruments. Eventually he comes across a myrtle, but as he raises his axe a vision appears of the sorceress Armida, whom he had previously loved. He hesitates to strike, but overcomes his reticence - as well as the transformation of the false Armida into a giant wielding 50 swords - to kill her and thus break the enchantment.
17 September 1973, 10.00am. Musicians gather at All Saints’ Church in Petersham, West London, for three days of sessions to record overtures by Thomas Arne. Under the baton of Christopher Hogwood, their approach was radical - they performed on period instruments using, as far as possible, the techniques that were current at the time of composition. A new orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music,...
excellent
В холодному залі публіка сидить у зимовому одязі, а співаки розважають їх мистецтвом музики в декольте, з оголеними руками. Шкода...
That, was awesome, period.
Одно из лучшего , что я видел и слышал в интернете ! Благодарю всем !
Прекрасно ! Молодцы ! Благодарю !
I have performed this with the Dorian Singers, we all enjoyed it so much. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤❤❤
Pure perfection.... thank you very much.
Merci ! C est magnifique
Best rendition
Very interesting interpretation. Too bad the recording is exceedingly bright, making the strings sound harsh at times. Baroque strings typically have a smooth timbre that is lost in the way this has been recorded and/or mixed down.
რა ეპოქის დარი ზღაპრული სილამაზეა!
Sublime!
Amazing! All of the beautiful Art Deco sets! And that TERIFFIC score!
I wanted my wife to walk down the aisle to this, but it was to fast and she has short legs. We walked out to it instead so I still had it at my wedding........
I need the lirics of this presentation
Bagus sekali.
Bellísimo!!!! ❤
This should be played at weddings after the recessional; to hustle the guests out so the next wedding can take place.
Boring. Using Mozart-like superficialities and nothing more. It's like listening to AI-generated Mozart. In fact, I think I would prefer that.
I am going to take a chance and tell here secrets about me. I have been a deeply passionate and enormous lover of GOD the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit since I was a very young boy. As a child, I use to hug the feet Jesus on a large life size crucifix in church when no one was looking. I did this after seeing Marcellino Pan y Vino. I grew up in a very poor family in Kentucky with a saintly mother and a very dangerous alcoholic father. Although my father was nice but aloof when sober, he could doing anything with his hands. He made my first violin. I soon had dreams of an older boy who called himself Uriel and he carried a large book. I had no idea whom he was until decades later in my life. I had no male or female friends. I talked to GOD and Jesus everyday and cried myself to sleep at night from loneliness. Uriel asked me if I wanted to have understandings, to see through special visions and dreams. And he asked me if I truly loved GOD - OH YES I DO! From his open book appeared a flaming heart. He placed a tiny flame in my heart and another in my head. From that next day until now, I have dreams and visions that come true and I can see into the intentions of adults. All the hundreds of children I have taught seem to have adored and loved me. Animals too! They say I am the real Santa. Others say I am their teddy bear. I seem to know many things and have been asked to write a book but I honestly think no one would believe me. I am a very shy and quiet soul except when I was a music director training children. You should have heard my choirs of children - 9 of them averaging 93 each. The two greatest dreams I ever had was one where GOD appeared on my right side as a large rolling dark could with enormous lights shinning from behind. OH THE LOVE I FELT! As we over looked a lake westward, HE showed and told me so much - ALL CAME TRUE. Then decades later I was taken in a dream to a giant room that looked like the famed Amber room. Countless souls of children and babies were singing music greater than anything I knew. WHEN I AWOKE, THE JOY WAS SO INTENSE THAT I COULD NOT HELP WEEPING, SMILING AND PRAISING GOD. This is why music like the Messiah of Handel is so profoundly and deeply moving to my soul. Humanity has no concept of the enormous beauty of heaven and what awaits. For all that read this all I can say is - Say to them that are of a fearful heart, be strong, for thy GOD will indeed come to save you! Love GOD with a pure heart and each other! You get to take love and knowledge with you forever!!!
Too fast, sorry.
Habla el INFRAOMNISCIENTE : ! Que alegría que me da, al ver que el 20% de los artistas musicales pasan de los 50 años. Ya que en las profesiones de los humanos, somo marginados de lo que sabemos hacerlo bien y son nulas las posibilidades de seguir subsistiendo. En lo que respecta a la calidad musical, me embeleso y me gusto mucho (eso que soy tan solo un exartesano de HispaQuichuahablante, Ecuador). Hallelujah! Great performance and recording! Thank you from Canada!
Ihave sung this neatly 50 years sgo with our choir. All except one of the doloists have died.
A very well played performance. I’d like to know who the very cute blonde playing the violin is. She captured my eye when she quickly turned her head back to the music after being distracted. Reminds me of a first rehearsal I played as principal oboist with the Gloucester Symphony. I noticed a very pretty blonde violinist who caught my eye and dated shortly after. I was 17. A hundred years ago.
Hail the queen!
super conductor 👍
Nice playing
Beautiful rendition!
David Blackadder on the trumpet... magnificent!
Breathtaking, two amazing voices... two gorgeous ladies.
This was played as I walked down the aisle at my son's wedding. I was thrilled that the organist suggested this!!!
An exquisite musician as well as a truly accomplished singer. In other words, a joy to listen to - and as such, a team member with the other musicians.
