Marta distinguished the right medication just by lifting the bottle. Ransom couldn't distinguish a real knife from a prop😉.
The difference between the victor and the vanquished!
And yet Marta couldn't recognize that Harlan had ZERO signs of someone who was injected with a lethal does of morphine? Sure. It doesn't take 10 minutes for that that shit to hit.

Such excellent comment
A surprise success because it isn’t a franchise or reboot. Yeah. An original film. We don’t get those much anymore!
Yes we do, people just don't watch them...Sadly.
Wasnt it based off a book
I agree, that's its best element.
However there are indeed a lot of original movies here and there and some of them are great movies as well. They just don't get enough attention..
@@Cmon_bro12 the Plot is original so far as I know... 'the book' that keeps getting cited is a choose your own adventure story with a similarly named Victim... but little if any shared plot elements (possibly a childhood favorite of the writer, perhaps some subconscious elements sneaked through)
@@Cmon_bro12 No--it was inspired by Agatha Christie books but was original.
I was SOOO sure it was all a setup by the grandpa for a book.
Omg i thought that too
I had been thinking it was gonna be like the old Sierra game The Colonel's Bequest and the grandpa was gonna be alive and had set the whole thing up to find out who actually deserved their inheritance or something based on how they reacted
What if it was the grandma that actually was the muderer
@@ThePigGoesQuack 😂😂😂
It was narrated badly throughout. We watched a movie of someone reading a (bad) book.
that detail about the mud on the window was so great, i didn't even notice it
Dankthony Daniels Yeah nobody did
Yeah, i thought it was Martas footprint since Ransom didn't step on the mud infront of the fencegate, but then again it was probably muddy on the trail through the woods as well.
I did
I did but thought i was imagining things
@@shakalakaful me too
I remember feeling initially disappointed during my first viewing when they seem to give away the killer's identity not even halfway into the movie, only for the mystery to deepen and the real killer revealed. This really is an excellent film.
Who did you, at first, believe to be there killer that was identified?
@@PlayaP69 Probably marta as thats what people were led to believe
One of the truly genius elements of this film is the genre flip--from a mystery whodunnit to a get-away-with-murder thriller, then whipping back to a whodunnit just when you settled yourself into watching the thriller. Even the professional assholes over at Cinema Sins had to admit to nit-picking just to have something to sin about it.
@@OptimusPrimate_ Aww. I was not privileged with Marta being the first idea of the murderer. I, actually, due to my apparently failing eye sight, and/or facial recognition, thought Fran was Marta in the first beginning of the film.
My first, probably, (I really don't remember clearly) thought was the Nazi grandson.
I thought the same thing. Was really happy with the flip it took.
if you'll look at the poster, Ransom (Chris Evans) is positioned covering the O in "Knives Out". Indicating he's in the donut hole.
Nice spot.
Which poster?
I still don't understand all the donut stuff
Oh SO good! This movie is a film studies dream!

This movie is truly a masterpiece and a hidden gem. It needs to be seen by more people.
How is this a hidden gem???? Hidden gems are what you would refer to films that did not get enough attention but were amazing. Knives Out is very mainstream and well known and loved
Hidden gem?
It won a few emmy's and was nominated for many more
@@SPACEHARICERefer to my last comment
i've recommended knives out to more people then i think any other film
@@lucylucina4253 Same, everyone knows Parasite and such but I've met no one who watched Knives Out
I think there needs to be a “Knives Out” edition of Clue. It would be fantastic. You could even have an “eat shit” card.
Amazing
Will never happen, but... OH. YEAH. Beyond cool.
How would an “eat shit” card work? I suspect Linda did it with the knife in the eat shit? Cards are either suspects, weapons or rooms. Eat Shit is an insult.
LMAO AN "EAT SHIZ" CARD
You mean a board game? It would probably have to be a video game today.
It ain't everyday that you see James Bond arresting Captain America...
Even though no one is seeying this, this is darn right
You forgot about the lemons! There was a bowl of lemons on Harlan's desk early in the film. Lemon juice makes a great invisible ink which is made visible by heat, so we can assume that Harlan's letters to Linda were written with lemon juice.
Good catch! Wonderful detail.
I watched this with my parents last night and the first thing my mother commented on was how ridiculous it was that Harlan was lucid enough to come up with his plan after suffering a massive overdose.
Because they're wasn't a overdose
yea, I love how everything came together at the end
I also felt something was off, because it was not getting sleepy or even in a coma, after such a high dosage.
@@Findalfen That was something I noticed instantly after Marta went over the stages of Morphine Overdose. They made sure to state what happens after x-number of minutes... and then proceeded to clearly state how many minutes had passed. It made calling the swapped meds thing fairly easy, but the "game" sub-plot, along with the mention of "props", is what threw me off Ransom as the villain - I kept thinking it was going to be a "Harlan's not really dead" twist.
@@VenraeLOL red herrings!
I am positive the screenplay for Knives Out is one of the most flawless ever written.
I have one. Why didnt Blanc question Fran? The case would have ended right there
@@ashishrandive9417 trueeee
@@ashishrandive9417 maybe busy with preparing the black mail for Ransom. Beside, Ransom was not interrogated either. I think they both didn't at Harlan's house after the funeral, and that's why they didn't interrogated.
Despite the detectives want to question everybody.
The sequel is not a sequel to the Thromby family story. They're not using the same cast or plot. The only "sequel" factors are that the next movie will have detective Blanc's character and it will be another mystery. That's it.
Oh ok! I was hoping it would be different cause that wouldn’t make any sense to come back to the same characters.
I feel like Marta will make an appearance as well
And the bad guys wont have iphones
@@surajkumarrc1362 hahaaha yes i saw Rian say that such a good tip

6:11 He also describes his method of sleuthing to Martha as "I observe the facts without biases of the head or heart. I determine the arc's path, strolls leisurely to its terminus, and the truth falls to my *FEET* "
I'd say my favorite parts of Knives Out are Ransom's villain monologue calling Blanc Foghorn Leghorn and how Marta shouldn't inherit his "ancestral home" that Blanc reveals was bought Harlan in the 1980s, then the smirk Harlan's mom gives when the truth comes out.
and wasn't there something about the Previous owner's Nationality and Line of work too (and the 'kids' *pshaw* that Fact, because they think either/both those traits are somehow beneath them, and thus wish to continue ignoring that Truth)
I love that part
csi kfc
And of course Foghorn Leghorn was voiced by Mel Blanc.
@@TJ52359 - The previous owner was Pakistani, can't remember the occupation tho.
The scene in the pub was awesome - he hears Martha's story and starts talking about Go, cause he's realised he's been outsmarted again
I was hoping you'd also mention when Jamie Lee Curtis yelled at LaKeith Stanfield to 'Get out!' after the will was read. Stanfield's character was the one trying to warn Daniel Kaluuya to get out of the house in the movie Get Out (2017). I found it as a nice homage
Dont forget about james bond being in this film too.
It was an ensemble cast so I'm surprised he didn't mention each actors and actresses notable roles
And lor san tekka
When the Thrombeys follow Marta outside after the will reading, the motion from the videographer taking the camera off the tripod and shakily filming the drama reflects the chaos that is Marta’s mind at that moment in time.
Also notice how it’s only the Drysdale part of the family that confuses where Marta is from. Linda says Ecuador, Richard says Paraguay and Uruguay, and Ransom says Brazil
“Ransom, are you back home already? Best part
”you're back again already?"
yeah i did not get it at first..
I loved that they changed the Potrait everytime they showed it. Also i found i quite interesting to reveal exactly how he died so early in the movie.
And of course: "That was the dummest Chase I ever witnessed" (Don't know if he said it like that, i watched the film in german and that was roughly translated from what he said in the german version)
Yes, that was exactly what he said
Actually, during filming, that painting was a green screen because they didn't have the final version. But it allowed them to do really interesting things with the painting.
To me, the outdoor scene where the detective was holding the broken round trellis piece, made me think of a classic detective from the past holding and looking through a magnifying glass looking at a hidden clue.
3:08 considering Ana de Armas is a Cuban actress, and Cabrera is a common Cuban name, I'd say chances are she's most likely... well, Cuban.
@Muhammedlee you.are.an.outlier.
I thought that was the running joke. At the same time, names are tricky. For example, my last name was converted to Spanish from an Italian name. Even though, my family are from South America, the name is most common in Mexico.
@@Tinabear131 yeah, under Obama.
there are a lot of cuban nurses so most likely cuban
Wherever she's from, she's stunning!
Knives Out is a flawless example of a single, unique idea executed perfectly while exploring all the possibilities of that idea. Everything just fits together perfectly.
This might have been mentioned in the video, but of the portrait of Harlan with the knife that would slit his throat , at the beginning, it is at a confused frown. After the crime is committed, it is a scowl. When the interviews are started, it is at an optimistic and questioning look. During the Will Reading, it has an arrogant grin, Harlan even calling him and Ransom arrogant. After the crime is solved, the painting is at the classic Harlan hearty smile. Overall, my favorite movie in the genre. Possibly ever. It’s just one of those movies where you turn off your brain.
The best part?
Jamie. Lee. Curtis
morale: don't be an ass and you might win a house
A house, a publishing company and $60 million in various cash accounts.
The difficulty with a sequel to something so intricately crafted to get you second- and third-guessing is the risk of falling into M Night Shyamalan Syndrome of audiences anticipating a twist that might not live up to the original.
We do have long strings of excellent detective novels though, each (almost) as good as the last, so I'm hopeful.
Sequels so rarely stack up to the original. I suspect that’ll be the case here. There is so much money at play with the sequels, airtight writing will be an afterthought.
Pleased to report from the future that Rian Johnson did a wonderful job in the sequel. Addressing that issue and creating a good piece of its own merit!
@@philosophiabme Indeed. The trick to it seems to be make everybody and everything a red herring.
Noah Segan's performance as Trooper Wagner is chock-full of hidden gems. From "Watch your head, thank you", to recognizing Deadly by Surprise, to starting to ask the dogs not to disrupt the muddy trail, it's a perfect supporting turn
The mug had glue on the handle in the final scene from being repaired.
Nize catch!
Benoit Blanc's character to me feels like an American answer to Hurcule Poirot, from Agatha Christie's mystery fiction
In the in-theater commentary, Rian Johnson talks about how much he loves Agatha Christie novels and that Poirot was very much the inspiration for Blanc’s character.
He also said that Blanc as well as the structure of the plot was more of a nod to Columbo than traditional murder mysteries, this revealing the manor of death early in the story
I came thinking the same thing, that this is going to develop exactly as that and that everyone was guilty but good to see this twist.
I like how a good movie manages to become even better after I watched it.
I voted for Parasite bc I hadn't seen Knives Out. But last night my friends and I watched Knives Out. Everything happens for a reason.

Great movie and acting. Chris and Ana were amazing and everyone else . I love that there wasn’t much violence, basically none. We need more movie like that.
I'd totally be down for a series of mystery movies with Daniel Craig solving them.
Same here
I love Knives Out. It was a good balance of funny, tense and thought-provoking.
I saw it the day it came out. The moment I saw the trailer I knew that Chris Evans was the murder because the dogs barked. I was amazed that I guessed it right. I love mystery shows and things like this. My favorite board game is always going to be clue
I went to watch this thinking it was a thriller but i laughed so hard in the theater
It was such an easygoing murder mystery. Fantastic.
All paintings are actually greenscreened and added afterwards according to Ryan in a VF vid. Breaking down a sceen
Yes, the design hadn't been completed yet when they started filming which is why they filmed with green screen in the frame.
When I watched the movie I thought Blanc pressing the piano key was for the recording so when they look it over they would know that, that specific moment was something they could use as evidence.
Same. Turns out that was only half right. They layers! This movie is awesome.
I remember that my mom and I both wanted to see this movie. Personally, I was going just for the cast, cause I thought that it would be a standard murder mystery. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was instead one of my favorite movies of 2019. Kudos to Rian Johnson and the cast and crew’s work on this masterpiece.
I noticed that you can see the eyes of TJ Eckleburg from the great gatsby in the scene when Joni comes up to see what the loud thud was and Marta is crying in the corner
The details in this film are just INCREDIBLE and there's probably still some we haven't found. This film truly is a masterpiece, so incredibly well done.
I loved the detail with the reflection of the christmas wreaths in the car window while Blanc is explaining the donut hole bit- the wreaths look like little donuts with holes in the middle
Knives Out was one of my favorite movies of last year
I didn’t see anyone mention the bowl of lemon placed on thrombys desk... lemon juice can be used as invisible ink and when heated it is reveled! He has it on his desk because that’s what he used to write Linda’s letters. I love how detailed this movie is 😍😍
This movie is definitely a one of a kind Masterpiece Blockbuster.
I had to rewatch because I thought I saw the portrait change, lol! The whole movie was my favorite part!
The piano key part reminded me of L.A. Noire
Reminded me of Monty Python, I found it very funny.
I got chills remembering the serial killer case(s).
I honestly have never been more thrilled by a movie than this. Unbelievable. Amazing movie
The piano cue was to note when they're lying also

It was to tell the detective to ask a specific question.
I started watching this video. Stopped at 1:00 and decided I should watch the actual movie first. So glad I did before the movie would have been ruined. This movie is Great!
My favorite part was the fact that it was a clue spoof and one of the detectives even made a clue reference early in the interrogation scene.

I loved the film, missed alot of the easter eggs, thanks! Its good to watch an original film these days, everything else is a sequel/reboot?
Chris Evans’s character is just Johnny Storm if he was a sociopath
You missed one thing at about 3:15 - the key Benoit strikes is a high G, but we hear the pitch A.
You missed a big one. In one scene of Ransom at his home alone you can see several bottles lined up in front of the window. On the day of the fire when Marta is there with him you can see 1 is missing. Later we see it is because he used one to start the fire at the Medical Examiners office.
Watched this movie just now, and I was really jaw dropped on how great ut turned out to be! It's now in my top favorite films! And I'm more of a 50s-80s film lover!
That baseball detail was so good i was shookethh
Marta also covers „My Coffee“ as she‘s drinking tea!!
8:54 Thank you! I saw the photo of Ricky Jay when I watched the film and wondered why it was in there!
Another thing I really liked about this movie was the marketing. The actual trailers essentially said "Hey, it's really good so check it out". All of the cast interviews showed they were also fans of the movie as well, no one tried to set expectations or even hinted at anything negative about the film. It's just a really good movie, so the team treated it as such.
Just watched this 3 days ago because I wanted to hear your analysis!

Surprisingly well crafted. Congrats, RJ. This type of film is your thing.
I had so many favorite points, but i never realized 70-80 percent of this video. Thanks!
This movie was really was “a who done it” just for the detective. The family could care less.
Because all they cared about was the inheritance. That's what caused their downfall. And they don't deserve a penny.
Exactly and I thought it was a cool plot, but they marketed this movie as a “who done it” where the family would fall apart because they accused each-other as murderers. That really wasn’t the case in the movie.
When grandma said "Ransom are you back home already" I looked to my friend and said something isn't right... then when they explained it later on in the movie i was like I KNEW IT!!!!! It was truly an astonishing work of art.
