Alright so Rian Johnson’s latest mystery sequel Glass Onion is finally on Netflix, so you poor chumps that missed it during that random week in theaters are finally in luck. Famed Detective Benoit Blanc is back at it, so in this video we’re going to slice open this Glass Onion, and do a full breakdown of the film, explain the twist ending, easter eggs, hidden details you may have missed, along with our reaction and review of this latest Netflix mystery movie.
With that out of the way, a huge thank you for clicking this, I’m your host Jared, now let’s get into Glass Onion.
Alright so Glass Onion quickly introduces our group of players, all having some sort of a connection, or let's say friendship, to a billionaire, playboy, philanthropist by the name of Miles Bron, each receiving similar mysterious puzzle boxes. While each jumps on a group chat to solve the puzzle together, the characters slowly reveal themselves. Claire Debella, the governor of Connecticut now running for the Senate, Lionel Toussaint, the head scientist for Miles's company named Alpha, Birdie Jay, a former supermodel turned fashion designer, and Duke Cody, a Twitch streamer and men's rights activist. Along with Peg, who is Birdie’s assistant, and Whiskey, Duke's girlfriend and Twitch channel assistant, so like hit that like button fam!
Together they solve the various puzzles of the puzzle box, revealing an onion looking shape with a personal invite to Bron’s private Greek island for a weekend murder mystery party getaway from the craziness that was 2020. Ironically the symbol on the invite is that of a Greek evil eye, or mati, which usually symbolizes a curse given by one person to another by way of a spiteful or bitter look. Hinting Bron may have some sort of power over the group.
Janelle Monáe’s character, Cassandra “Andi” Brand, also receives a puzzle box, however was NOT included in the group call, and instead shows her hilariously smashing the box to get the invite, rather than solving the puzzle. Meaning she’s unlike the others, and her current situation being in a robe in an unfinished basement adds to this.

You missed out on one thing. During the flashback, before they get on the boat, Blanc tells Helen that Miles can't be the murderer because he's not an idiot and won't do it himself because of the publicity of the trial and when someone else would do it for him. That's why Blanc so angry when Miles does turn out to be an idiot, who drove even drove his own car to the murder and incriminated himself.

He forgot to mention. You definitely notice this on rewatch. The reaction Bron gives when he sees “Andi” for the first time on the beach. He gives that OH SHIT look, knowing damn well he killed her. Like he’s seeing a ghost. It’s good because the director misdirects the audience with the prior mention of the trial that just happened that kicked out Andi, but it’s actually because he’s seeing helen on the island, knowing she know something is up.

The fact that Miles' stupidity was a core plot point of the film completely sold its brilliance to me. The one scene when Helen and Blanc are going over which of the people could be suspects, and Blanc shuts down the idea of it being Miles immediately by basically saying "what kind of idiot would kill someone they just got out of a court battle with" is just amazing. Miles is that kind of idiot. The "infraction" points and "inbreathiating" (which google even tries to autocorrect me on), taking the only good idea from Blanc of killing someone while the lights are out (again, Clue popping up), just an amazingly smart and self-aware movie written by a smart and self-aware man.

I enjoyed the movie on the first watch, waiting for all of the details to be revealed. But the more I've thought about the plot afterwards, the more questions I have. My main problem with the movie is that it's never revealed whether Miles knew Helen was in disguise all along or if he initially thought that Andi may have survived his murder attempt. If Miles thought Andi was the one who showed up on the island, he would've pulled her aside at some point to ask what she remembered about their last interaction and, if she remembered the murder attempt, see if/how Andi planned to retaliate. If Miles knew from the jump that Helen was the one on the island, then Benoit Blanc's presence should have been more alarming to him because now he'd have a woman seeking answers about her sister's death and a renowned detective there to help her. In this scenario, I doubt Miles would've allowed Blanc to stay. The movie emphasizes Miles' stupidity, but I don't think that's enough to explain how he moves past his surprise over Helen and Blanc's arrivals.

      So to help explain
      1) It was revealed that Miles knew that wasn't Andi. We see a scene of Miles at Andi's house and drugging her. It's implied that he took Andi to her car in the garage and had the car running which led to her death.
      2) Miles was alarmed by the Blanc's presence. That's why he pulled Blanc to the side to ask why he's here. Blanc was smart to say he received a box and doesn't know why he received it. To Miles, that means Blanc doesn't know about Andi's death, which calms Miles. Plus it makes sense for Miles to be calm because in Miles mind, the only person who would know is Bautista character. Also, the death hasn't even reached the news outlets yet so for Miles, Blanc's appearance doesn't alarm him. If Blanc revealed that he's here because Andi was killed and believes someone in this group did it, then Miles would've tried to kill Blanc and Helen.

    • @Sheboygan.
      @Sheboygan. Před rokem +10

@@SpyJamz 1) Maybe that scene was meant to confirm that Miles knew it was Helen on the island, but I didn't get that impression the two times I watched the movie. Miles left Andi for dead. He didn't take her life in a way that leaves no room for doubt. So I still don't know what Miles did or didn't know before Duke shows him the news alert about Andi's death.
      2) Yes, Miles was alarmed by Blanc's presence and Blanc gave him an explanation that calmed his concerns. But the way it plays out relies too heavily on the "Miles is an idiot" theme. He shouldn't have accepted Blanc's explanation so easily. If Miles knew that Helen was on the island disguised as her sister and he knew one of the people on the island had to have invited Blanc, why wouldn't it cross his mind that Helen was the one who invited Blanc? The sister of the person you killed recently and a murder detective both end up on your private island. Come on now. Even the slowest person would suspect that they're working together to find out the truth.

Once it was revealed that Andi was dead, I figured it was Miles. I also figured that Duke's death was an anaphylaxis reaction. The big problem for me was that Blanc didn't call out Miles' stupidity in not just pinning Duke's death on him drinking his drink that he added Pineapple to, instead of acting like he was the target. Makes me wonder if that concept skipped Rian's mind, or if something ended up on the cutting room floor. Framing Duke drinking his drink as an accident, instead of a murder attempt on himself would have been the SMART thing, which clearly Miles wasn''t that brilliant.

One more gripe with the movie: Andi's email to the people who testified against her. She tells them that they have one last chance to make things right, but what does that mean? They don't have the money and company ownership that Andi wants and deserves, Miles does. Her old friends could admit in a new trial that they lied previously about whose napkin led to the company's founding, but the accuracy of their new testimonies would be in question. Andi's napkin is much more consequential than new testimonies, so I don't get why Andi would reach out to her old friends at all. Andi's email is the catalyst for her death, so I think there should've been a clearer need for her to send the email.

And their admissions of the truth wouldn't "make things right." That's the part of the email I'm focused on. Their admissions of the truth won't be nearly as impactful as the napkin, so I don't see why Andi would reach out to them.

How exactly? What are Blanc findings? He saw Helen alleged she found the envelope in his office with no one to confirm she didn't bring it with her from Andy's apartment. He didn't see Miles shooting Helen and there is no apparent evidence he did. Dukes death would be ruled accident, Blanc recalled Miles giving him glass later on, and at first his recollection was Duke accidentally switched glasses so changing mind is not hard evidence, others "remembered" after they were instructed by Blanc. Also, they just "saw" him handing him glass and can't testify him poisoning him, since someone decided to blow up house and evidence, there is no way to investigate if pineapple was in that glass or somewhere else.
In court this would be the case - twin sister seeks revenge because her sister commited suicide for losing company (yes, currently it's ruled suicide and not murder), she falsely impersonates her sister and brings envelope to plant it and calls her own detective to be her witness, but when her plan fails - she blows up house and all art in rage, and is sentenced for attempted murder and/or endangering others, and destroying property. What evidence exactly is there?

It was a tell. However that did not stop me from enjoying the movie. Glass Onion had more moving parts than that wacky puzzle box. This movie was fun and refreshing after watching innumerable films with lots of spandex, capes, tights, crowns and drama. Hard to say which movie I preferred. Glass Onion being "the second" in this series does take away the novelty. I suppose that makes me lean a bit more to the first movie, but only very slightly. Just watched it and I loved it so much. I liked that this one was a completely different feeling/set up sorta like how Sherlock Holmes and Pierot’s stories with the only common thread being the lead detective showing up to unravel the mystery.
I also loved that in the magazine cover where Miles is holding the note could be a nod to Elizabeth Holmes’ Theranos Times cover portrait, which points to Miles being a grifter.
As for the Mati, the symbol of the Mati is the actual ward against the spite/evil vibes/curse being directed your way. The Mati Symbol isn’t the actual curse, it’s an “all seeing eye” to protect you from all evil thoughts and from being “evil eyed/ given the ‘mati’” as the belief is that the jealous thoughts/ill words could cause actual harm/inconveniences to the object of the jealousy.
Typically in Greek culture the Mati is pinned on babies/young children’s clothing as a way to protect them from being harmed by people who will send bad vibes their way (also putting the pins on the back of the kids clothes means that younger kids wont pull at the charm),
So Miles’ including that symbol on the invitation could be a way of him attempting to ward himself and prevent any harm from coming to him spurred from the resentment/ill will from the people he’s been blackmailing.

Not sure if this is just a reference or a bit of foreshadowing, but Miles mentions he got "Phil Glass" to compose his "Dong" song (lol). Philip Glass was the composer for The Illusionist, which could (take this with a grain of salt, even I feel like I might be reaching, but what if, right?) foreshadow the fact that Andi getting shot may not be what it seems OR (imo) that Norton is the one who put Andi to sleep (and then kills her). In The Illusionist Norton's character puts someone to sleep to feign death, in Glass Onion, Norton's character puts someone to sleep, then kills them, then attempts to kill that person's twin, who feigns death to fool him. And yeah, maybe it's a reach, but it still feels intentional.

A good mystery isn't afraid to give clues early. The one that I felt was really, really obvious, was Miles look at seeing Andi when she gets off the boat. And Johnson hangs on that shot. So when Helen mentions her sister was dead, it jus clicked. While other people were surprised to see her, only Miles was truly shocked.
As for why he sent the box, alibi. "Why would I send her this invitation fi I thought she was dead?"
Also, the movie does show Miles hand Duke the drink, then shows an alternate version when Miles is telling his version, only to show the original once again, when Blanc is putting it all together.
And again, I actually appreciate the film giving the audience a real shot at putting together some of what's going on. Of course, some twists are intended to be unknown, like the twin thing.

Ok, so, I might be wrong but, I believe that the Mona Lisa was painted on a wood panel. However, as she burns in the movie, it looks like canvas burning and there doesn’t seem to be any wood panel at all.
So, ironically, just as one of the guest said upon arrival, Miles might have been given a fake Mona Lisa by the Louvre and failed to realize that. This theory would fit in pretty well with him being an idiot and being clueless about things he pretends to know.

If you see clearly, when the painting burns it looks like the layer of paint burns first and then keeps burning behind, that's how painted wood burns, the paint chips off. So yeah, that confirms that is indeed the "true" painting.
Kudos to the props department that thought of this detail!

I absolutely loved the first one. And while this didn’t quite live up to it it was still very enjoyable and entertaining. It did keep me guessing for the most part. Duke’s cause of death was immediately obvious. I even thought I saw a piece of pineapple in the glass but I guess it was just ice. I’d watch many more of these movies for Daniel Craig alone

I mean realistically it wouldnt make any difference. Their whole premise of Andy's murder is based on that Andy in fact did come up with idea herself, but since all of them testifies under oath Miles did, them backtracking would make their testimony useless since they're not reliable witnesses. Their testimony on him giving glass to Duke would also be invalid since their first recollection was that Duke took glass himself and they "remembered" after Blanc instructed them. Additionally, the house is blown up so there is no way to investigate whether pineapple was in glass, or in whole bottle, somewhere else,... So Helen destroyed evidence. The envelope itself again is not the proof, all they know is Helen said she found it but no one can confirm she did, so she would have motive and opportunity to take envelope from her sisters home and try to plant it to Miles. Her blowing up home and art wouldn't help her seeming more reliable.

The thing is their words mean nothing. They lied when it mattered the most with Andi, and only turn on Miles the moment his career and reputation is ruined to save themselves. Them wanting to tell the truth at the end doesn't negate that they will do whatever it takes, and side with whoever it takes, to save their own asses. They don't actually care about Andi or Duke's deaths, only how it could look bad for them.
