  • Here's a quick tutorial to help you paint small missile tips and details. Many of the new Catalyst plastic mechs as well as the older Irondwind Metals miniatures have exposed missile tips that will benefit from having some pops of color added.

I rarely get this detailed. After decades of wargaming, 'looks ok from arms length' has become my go to.
That being said, this is really inspiring. I am going to paint up a really detailed lance for the first time in a long time.
Between IlClan, new players, new content makers, the ever present Grognards and Old Heads, this is the best time to play BattleTech.
Thanks for providing some inspiration to keep me from stagnating my hobby progress.

Thanks for this! Normally I go for just a tabletop standard, but my Timberwolf and Catapult are begging to make the missiles pop. I would have never thought about rotating the model and just doing downward strokes. genius!

I had wondered how to paint the missiles in my CAV S.O. and this helps out a great deal. Thanks for sharing this.

Excellent, there's a lot of crossover that works well in CAV and Battletech when it comes to painting.

    Question for the group?
For Sci-Fi miniatures it seems like RED missile tips are the norm because it stands out pretty nicely.
    The US usually uses:
Olive Drab with a Yellow stripe for HE.
Olive Drab with a White stripe for Flechette
    Red for Incendiary
    Blue for Inert/Dummy
    Metal tip for Armor Piercing
then of course there is a lens for targeting (paint like a gem?)
I am not sure if other countries use the same colors for ordinance identification. I am sure in the future, the standards could/would change, but knowing the above, would that change your choice of missile tip color?

I wonder if this could be done more easily by painting the inside of the missile box a light color, then adding a darker speedpaint or wash. It would pull away from the tips and settle in the flat?
hehe exposed missile tips are so goofy if you think about it for 5 seconds. Any hits to that area are going to destroy, if not detonate them.

It would certainly work with the compromise being the missiles would be the same color as the face of the launcher. I'm sure it would still be effective and less technical so there's merit to your suggestion. As for exposed missiles...yeah but rule of cool and giant fights robots! 😎

This is interesting but the image you show at the beginning and the one at the end look nothing alike.

Are you referring to the very first image which is 3D render artwork? If so, then of course my painted mini at the end won't look the same ;)
