  • In this video I show you an easy way to restore that factory color to your gauge needle/pointers on your instrument cluster. I demonstrate on my Pontiac Fiero instrument cluster but this can be used on any needle that is made the same way.

Never have thought of doing it in vinyl, very smart!

Great video! Viewers: Just before taping/painting, clean the back of the Pointer with 95% or more Isopropyl Alcohol to remove any finger oils, let dry, then paint/tape.
Also, those meter pins are VERY fragile, use steady and straight force when removing and reinserting, if you bend the pin then they are ruined. Only remove and install once - don't pull off or press on more than needed (once) because it can loosen the Pointer's grip on the tiny pin. Take your time, practice in your head and dry run with your hands but don't press the Pointer in until your muscle comes into play to press - then press it down perfectly in one shot.
You may have noticed that some gauges can go way off scale during start or from sensor failures. They can get so far off scale they can get stuck. I took tiny pieces of soft black foam rubber and carefully super glued them off scale but before a point where the Pointer can get stuck. The rubber is about 3mm wide and 2mm thick and no taller to where the Pointer will touch it. This give the Pointer a soft stop. Don't use a hard stop like a metal post, inertia from the Pointer stopping so suddenly may cause it move on its pin and thus get out of alignment and give erroneous raedings.

Im thinking of trying something extremely similar on my 2000 Jeep XJ. For practice I am first going to use a different used cluster just Incase I make a mistake. The only thing that will be different is aligning the needles, be it turning the gauges on, but not starting the vehicle, then pressing them in. Ill use that tape suggestion (smart) to mark the original positions of some gauge points.
Ill use the tape method since that will likely last longer then fluorescent paint that is so often used.
    Thank you!

Very nice! They turned out great. I was wondering if you would be using the vinyl for that. I know how you like using that material.

Thanks, I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I was originally going to paint them but then thought of this and this is so much easier than painting.
