R9 was absolutely breathtaking in his prime years. Just an absolutely devastating player that was incredibly gifted and just built different. Most Brazilians are great dribblers but don’t have the physicality to match it, Ronaldo was the exception. The man was lightning quick, strong, could score off both feet, could dribble as good as anybody, had the Brazilian flair, could head the ball and most importantly was a freak of nature. Words can’t describe how good this man was, just pure elegance and he oozed class. I’ve never seen a player with so much raw natural ability that was built for football quite like him. Neymar and Messi are both pure natural talent as well but R9 in his prime was just footballing beauty. Incredible player

As a 14 year old PSV fan, this guy took my breath away when he came to Eindhoven and totally changed the way I experienced the game untill then. And that’s even after the Romario era and I had the privilege to see them play in our stadium.

Its not about defending was taken seriously, its back then you were able to hack players more freely, you could tug on shirts, you could slide from behind. It was just a much rougher game with the yellow and red cards being used less. Today its harder to play defense because you cant rely on those dirty tactics. I dont know if Ronaldo would have had a healthy career had they protected players back then, I think his explosiveness was just too much for his joints.

I once heard a doctor say that the injuries he suffered were just a matter of time, he was not gonna be able to avoid them. The Dr. said this was due to the things he did on the pitch, at the speed he used to play and the explosiveness he had just weren't normal and weren't sustainable for a human body. His body was gonna give up sooner or later.

The thing is that when you run that fast and quickly change directions at that speed on some potato field it places enormous stress on your knees. They are still stressed on a smooth surface, but a lot less because each step lands reliably.
Unfortunately, the San Siro in the late 90s was notorious for the atrocious state of the pitch. Just watch some of the footage and you will see it easily. And it wasn't just the San Siro, there was much worse elsewhere, and most stadiums in Italy had very low-quality grass.
So it is no coincidence that he broke down once he moved to Italy. He still probably would have eventually broken down had he stayed in Barcelona, but his chances to last longer were better there.
