Episode 13: Collision on the MARC
On February 16, 1996, a MARC commuter train collided with Amtrak's Capitol Limited passenger train in Silver Spring, Maryland, killing three crew and eight passengers on the MARC train; a further eleven passengers on the same train and fifteen passengers and crew on the Capitol Limited were injured.
An investigation by the NTSB found that the crew of the MARC train had forgotten the indication of an approach signal which they had passed before a station stop, and as a consequence could not slow down in time after encountering a stop signal. Other changes had to be implicated as a result from the crash.

I went to Harper's Ferry Job Corps at the time and was supposed to be on the Marc train to come home for the weekend with my friends that were also on the train. Thank the Lord above my mother and step father chose to pick me up by car instead. However when I got home I unfortunately had to watch my friends burn alive on national television on that train. To this day I dream about them and feel guilty about not being on the train with them. But I thankyou Lord for sparing me that fateful day. 🙏❤️

You are a survivor. I so remember this accident and how tragic it was with so many young people losing their lives.
Another thing worth noting is that along with 255 and 7752, both of the coaches on the MARC train were also deemed damaged beyond repair from the fire and scrapped. They were 7709 and 7720.
Today marks the 25th anniversary of this terrible collision and hopefully something like this will never happen again, and may the 11 people who lost their lives Rest In Peace.
Not to mention that this accident exposed a really bad design fault in the F40PH and other locomotives just as old
Oh, that was a tragic one. They all are - but finding out that the passengers died in the fire and couldn't get out (and the firefighters couldn't get in) was awful. Poor people.

Amtrak P40DC 811 and MARC GP39H-2 73 survived the wreck, repair, repainted and return to service hauling the passenger trains.

811 was eventually stashed away and will never run again while Marc 73 is still operating well to this day

On February 16th, 1996 after Valentine's Day, MARC Commuter Train 286 collided with Amtrak Train 29 The Capital Limited at 5:39 p.m. before midnight, 11 were killed that 🌙 and 26 were involving injured the crash collision. In the end, Amtrak F40PH 255 and MARC Cab car 7752 met their faith under the scrapper's toruch.

Just found this today, I have always wanted to see someone do these seeing how there are plenty of guys that do ones for planes.

I think they should make it so that all the train's doors automatically unlock the instant the engineer engages the Emergency Brake. That way, more passengers would be able to exit the train quickly after the crash, rather than having to struggle with windows and doors which won't open.

This simulation showed the Amtrak beyond the passing switch. Furthermore, there was a green light on the other track. How could a train be allowed onto it traveling in the opposite direction? Did the Marc train somehow miss a crossover? I recognize the Marc train may have been traveling faster than they should with a yellow light, but this accident seems eerily inevitable. I the Marc may have been scapegoated.
MARC train was supposed to stop to let the Amtrak train clear the single track but it didn't.
