  • Rail Disasters is finally back after a long while. Just a recap, this is the second episode of the new series known as "Rail Disasters" simulating and recreating the events of real world train accidents.
    On December 12, 1990, a collision took place between an Amtrak passenger train, the Night Owl, and a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Stoughton Line commuter train just outside Back Bay station in Boston, Massachusetts. Although no one was killed in the accident 453 people were injured and Back Bay station was closed for six days. Total damage was estimated at $14 million. The accident led to new speed restrictions and safety improvements in the vicinity of Back Bay and a revamp of Amtrak's locomotive engineer training program.

    The distant signals for Cove interlocking (the signals located just west of Ruggles station) now will ALWAYS show Approach Medium. This requires trains approaching Back Bay to slow down to 45MPH as soon as they pass these signals. ACSES (the Positive Train Control solution in place) will enforce the proper speeds on the curve itself (30mph for Amtrak). This should never happen again.
    Oh, and cheers for using the route I created in the video. The TSW version of this route I will make is going to warrant a remake of this video at some point.

    I just happened upon this video. Very interesting and well put together.
    At the time of this accident I worked for the engineering firm that did the station and tunnel. Several of us were in the tunnel the evening following the accident to assist the responders, as we were very familiar with the tunnel. The destruction was amazing, even more so that no one was killed.
    I have some photos that I took that night, and from time to time I look at them as a reminder of the role of luck in life.

    My mom went into work that day on the train just before the commuter train that got hit. She'd assumed it wasn't a serious accident throughout the day (before social media, digital news, etc.), so when she was coming home and they told her her Providence train was being rerouted over the Fairmount Line, she asked the conductor why they were doing this inconvenient rerouting. He simply responded with "we're lucky no one was killed." It's a good thing she wasn't on that earlier train, or I may not be typing this right now.

    I'm not saying you're wrong about the consist for #66, but I was a Washington-based LSA in that era, and worked that train as a cafe LSA about a year before that accident, and in that era that train always had an Amfleet I coach-cafe, and carried a Heritage 10-6 Sleeper for Boston on the rear. Now because of the holiday season, it is possible that a regular food service car was not available, and it's always possible the sleeper was bad ordered at the last minute and blanked for the trip. This is about the time that the FDA came down hard on Amtrak over it's rodent and vermin problems with a consent decree and started shopping infested cars right and left for several months. But the consist you describe would have been very unusual for the old "Fright Owl".

    • @bitrexgm
      @bitrexgm Před 4 lety +1

      I have a lot of fond memories of taking the Night Owl from Boston to Washington to visit my grandmother as a boy in the mid 1980s. My mother was divorced and single at the time but even the double-bedroom sleeping car accommodations in the 10-6 were pretty cheap then, I recall you sometimes got a basket of nice snacks too that I'd dig into while Mom got wicked ripped on nips of Irish Mist (lol!) The 10-6 sleeper cars were pretty comfortable as I remember and quite an experience for that little kid, now a man just old enough to have actually experienced a bit of a different era. Incidentally the last time I recall riding in a Heritage coach on the Night Owl was around 1998 I believe, I recall thinking it was unusual to see on that train.

    Suggest anyone who has seen this video read the entire original NTSB report (RAR-92-01) which placed blame for the wreck on the student engineer alone and the rare reconsideration report that was released later after Abramson contested the conclusion of the original report. The follow-up report cleared him and placed blame on Copeland and the NRPC. When you read the two reports in conjunction, you will find that there are some factual differences between the fact pattern presented there and the interpretation of the accident in the video.

    I'm no expert by any means, but I'm willing to bet that the fact that they were in a tunnel played a part in no one dying. The curve and walls surrounding them likely helped contain the locomotive's movement while reducing the speed at impact, instead of the train flying off the rails and crashing into something as it could have done out in the open, as was the case in the Eschede disaster. And while the emergency brakes didn't slow the Night Owl enough to avoid the collision and get through the curve unscathed, it at least reduced the speed at the point of impact. Don't take my word for it though.
    Copeland made a wise decision in the end when he hit the emergency brake. They were right to fire him and Abramson, but his actions likely mitigated the damage and saved a lot of people that would have died had the train been traveling at full speed. This could have been far worse than it was.

    • @F4ncySu1tan
      @F4ncySu1tan Před 3 lety

      You are somewhat right, excuse the late reply BTW. However, I still believe the sole reason of no fatalities was where the Amtrak hit. Not only did it not hit any cars, it hit the rear locomotive which was not where the operator was. Had it hit the cars, those 453 injured people would've likely been dead. Being in a tunnel like that is both a blessing and a curse. For example, the Malbone Street Wreck in NYC. I believe that if the Amtrak derailed into the tunnel wall, not the MBTA, the tunnel may have caved in.

      There were actually two Cab Cars on the consist. 1614 was of course the leader, and 1525 was running as a coach right behind it. 1614 is still around today, although it has long since been deactivated and can be used only as a coach. Sadly, 1525 was scrapped for parts a while ago.
