- Rail Disasters is a Train Simulator series simulating and recreating the events of real world train accidents
Episode 9: School Bus catastrophes
This is a two part episode covering two similar accidents where a train collides with school bus resulting in major casualties and major rules changes.
Part 1: Congers, New York, 1972
On March 24, 1972, a Nyack high school bus collides with a Penn Central freight train at a crossing only equipped with crossbucks in Congers, New York in Rockland County. The accident resulted in 5 deaths and 44 injured. This accident left many questioned why did it happen and the new law changes that would take effect cause of it.
Part 2: Fox River Grove, Illinois, 1995
On October 25, 1995, a school bus bound for Cary-Grove High School collides with an express Metra commuter train bound for Chicago along the Northwest Line. This was at a interconnected intersection after the bus was stopped at a red light. It was the worst school bus accident at the time and worst for Metra. Investigators wanted to find out why did this happen on such an average October morning.

I’m a retired engineer. I had a school bus run a crossing right in front of me while I was going 57 mph. I put the train in emergency and somehow we missed the rear by inches. I can still see the faces of the kids in the back looking up at me. I tried to stand when we stopped but couldn’t because my legs were shaking so bad. Stuff nightmares are made of.
Sounds absolutely terrifying man.
Oh my god, glad both of you were safe.
Mr. Cummings, I remember the Congers bus crash. I was in nursery school in Nyack at the time. It was such a tragedy. It affected our area very deeply. I am so glad that you did not have the same fate that happened in Congers.
I bet you were praying when you thought you hit them
Larry Cummings When did this happen?
If I remember correctly, before the Fox Grove accident, they were calling for the intersection to be changed, possibly to a bridge or something. The city or others refused, saying it would "change the area too much." 7 deaths also changes a lot.
1:28 5:08
All bc of letting brainlets be in charge of childrens live , WOW america
The stoplight needed to be fixed for years. I used to avoid that intersection because it would only be green for 2 seconds at most, which was only enough time to go over the railway. Two other people had died at the intersection in two separate incidents in the years before.
Echo,so they are also responsible then. They do not care...
All I can say,is these people are all idiots it seems.
A bit off topic but odd how interconnected everything is in life. I was 10 growing up in Massachusetts when the Congers accident happened. Now approaching retirement age I am driving a school bus IN NY and have to complete the very 19A training every year that this accident brought into being. Amazing to me how this one accident ended up impacting MY life decades after the fact.
At the time of the Congers crash, I was in high school, the same age as many of the students on board the bus. I lived a distance away, and the accident was a big story getting plenty of news coverage. It sure made me realize how precious life is and that when the students boarded that day they had no idea what awaited them.
There was one school bus train collision that is worse than Fox River Grove and Congers. It happened in Evans, Colorado on Dec. 14, 1961. That wreck killed 20 of the 36 kids on board the bus
Yes, that bus went under the caboose
I feel really bad for the parents who lost their children
A dozen kids gone. Three instantly gone after being struck by a penn central train, five instantly gone after being struck by an inbound Metra, and two to circum of injuries on both buses.
All of which NEVER deserved it!!!
SEAT-BELTS EVERYONE
Please let this be a normal field trip...
With Ms Frizz?
No way!
Awww...

wtf is wrong with you im not trying to be snowflake or anything but people just died
R.i.p students in those buses 😔
Yea, let them all rest in peace...😔
The parents are very Ubset
Which ones died in both?
i would have jumped out of the bus drivers window
love your work truly !
Cool Video! :)
God bless all the victims of both accidents
Why is there polar express music!?!?!?!? Good music though.
Yea
Im confused to
Idk why they put it there-
Polar express could be a ghost train and it's full of kids so it makes sense...
@@MagnumLoadedTractor Ehhh not really. But I get what you're saying.
Yeay i like that movie
The polar express music is giving me the chills
On March 24th, 1972 Penn Central freight train collided with a school bus, 5 were killed and 44 were injured the collision.
Me: *Narrator* On October 25th, 1995 after my birth, a school bus operates by a substitute driver was running a few minutes late, at 7:10 a.m., Chicago's Metra Train 624 The Flyer struck school bus 103, 7 were killed and 21 were injured the collision. In the end, school bus 103 met her faith under the scrapper's torch.

5:17 Polar express Song: Seeing is believing
Well yeah it’s polar express music bu you know what it actually fits with the scene I actually like it now
An excellent video. ♡ T.E.N.
Nice video, very informative, good graphics. It has to not only be horrifying but very damaging to see the train coming at you and for the engineer see a vehicle on the tracks and neither train nor vehicle can move or stop in time. My heart goes oiut to all victims of these accidents, esp including the train drivers. R.I.P.
first time doing a two-parter episode. nice to see that your back with more new episodes. keep it up
quick question, was PC #2653 an ex SCL U-boat or couldn't find a resin?
PS Polar Express music starts at 5:16 and it would make sense since Christmas was 5 days after this came out
also RIP the victims of the 1972 and 1995, MERTA school buses incident
Sorry for the long ass delay. Idk if it's still valid, it wasn't an ex-SCL cause I could not find the reskin.
Very good job
“Gilchrest road” I drive on that road almost daily.
same ;-;
I am from Nyack. I was in nursery school when that happened.
@@Edelweiss-hh6tk I was not alive yet, but my father was born a year after this happend.
Oh wow. I’m old. I remember it. It tore apart our community.
@@Edelweiss-hh6tk you really are
Everyone keep the children in your prayers
Both of these events are so tragic! If i was those stuednts on both the 1972 & 1995 school bus, and train incidents, I'll be yelling to get off the bus asap!
Rip those 7 students on the bus
Great video! If only they had a Penn Central U25B
in the fox river grove crash it was witness that NO CAR WAS IN FRONT
Today marks the 48th anniversary of the congers ny bus crash and may thoses kids who will kill Rest In Peace
the substitute driver died, thats sad. but also if the lady had come into work the substitute wouldnt have died
Actually, the driver of the bus in the Fox River Grove tragedy survived the crash; but I wish that the driver had tried on seven counts of Accidental Homicide. Accidental Homicide is applicable in this case because even though she had no intention of killing the students; they still died and the blood of the students killed in the disaster is on her hands.
Strange that throughout all the noise in the back of the bus, the driver never heard the loud, blaring train horn which is louder than a bus full of screaming students. The driver would've definitely heard the horn as the train got close out of all the students.
Yes Atka. You cross the tracks and then- just sit there...you do not budge. The woman is an idiot.
Woman moment
that’s so sad why the train smash into the school bus😭
Children:THERES A TRAIN COMIN!
Bus Driver:What?
Me: *I do not like where this is going*
JOE, PATRICIA!!!
I'm The First Person Who Surpassed The 500 Likes! Great Video Though
Any chance you could do The Gettysburg Train Explosion of 1995?
this made me sad 😥😥😥😥😥😥 and rip bus
1:37 before anybody asks the song here, it is called sick boy instrumental.
This song is so awesome and it is from the polar Express
fox grove i used to live over there there are still markings till this day
Today marks the 24th anniversary of the fox river grove wreck and disaster
And rip all thoses 7 teenagers and that bus driver should never drive a bus ever again
In my honest opinion; the driver of the bus in the Fox River Grove tragedy should have been tried on seven counts of Accidental Homicide. Even though she had no intention of killing the students who died in the collision; the blood of the students killed in the disaster is on her hands.
@@michaellovely6601 yep exactly
2:32 Just to let know. Joseph Larkin died in 1998, & not in 2000
can you do one of the 2000 tenga georgia bus train wreck, 2017 biloxi mississippi bus train wreck and 2018 athens tx bus train wreck
What happened to Penn Central #3048?
Everyone im railfan Jacob dubielak I have been for a long time and I love trains and music I feel bad for everyone's kids we all WI pray this makes me sad sometimes
Keyword: Jacob. You aren't a real woman
The Congers bus driver only gets probation for what happened? Given how aggressive he drove and how careless he was, he should've gotten jail time!
Dude here's some great advice for you buddy. Do your best to try to pay attention to your grammar. Love your videos man. Very cool recreations
That's my favorite song
So uh ya.
The congers ny bus vs train crash happened 17 days after my mum was born
Can you do the great train wreck of 1918?
Thats so sad
We have to pay for the kids that was killed in train vs school bus crash
You can go put flowers on their graves.
Let's Fixed them
how did your penn central train crashed into school bus
Im on that train since 47 years ago
Yes pbs 1972 and PTV park 1995
Where did you get the video at 2:17
Jack294.5(TM)'s channel
i went by gilcherst road before
I had a dream I became a school bus driver and stopped at the railroad crossing to check for the train
5:00 Brakes application
The sound is a polar express song😇
Wow. BY 1972, we here in the deep south, in the bad old days, had to shut up for at 30 seconds at EVERY crossing, back when the general public(i.e. bus driver) could administer corporal punishment within the public domain w/o being charged with assault, especially in life critical situations.
The polar express music is the wrong music for this video
First scenario-It is not just that 35 year old man's fault..if he was negligent, the bus driver was, too. Was he now the scapegoat? And why did he die? And 25 mph is not so fast.Mary Theresa was struck at 60 mph..do I misunderstand or why does the bus just sit on the tracks?Cross as quickly as can.Safety measures were also not good.
WTF ITS NOT CHRIST- oh wait nvm haha
I live in Illinois
Larking didn’t die on October 2000, he died in October 1998
Looks like the articles I researched got it wrong. Thanks for that tip
No problem 👍
Why did he die?
Sad
and atlanta Geórgia csx collision with Marta bus was truck driver refused to move out the way when bus driver honk the horn to get out from the tracks before csx approaches
the 1995 fox river grove train and bus collision is quite similiar to the 2015 atlanta Geórgia train and bus collision
My sister was almost hit because someone just turned with out looking both was before turning

Did 2653 returned to service
It hit a bus. There would be minimal damage.
@@greenshyguygaming4502 You don't know how or if 2653 was damaged.

Engineer we are so sgriled conductor yes we are
2:09
1994 cajon pass runway please
Go to Thunderbolt1000 Siren Productions. He has it.
That bus driver in the first one was an idiot who deserved prison time not just probation but the crossing was a disaster waiting to happen. No crossing should be without a minimum of lights if not gates
Most railroad crossings on private roads have crossbucks but the minimum for a private road crossing is at least a stop sign with the crossbuck
Its a game
and is similiar atomic train 1999
the 1972 congers new york train and bus collision is like the movie atomic train 1999

Yea
Alright
Re-occurr-ing
Not recurring.
Grade crossings _kill._
missfritter's racins skoool
the New York one kind of does look like Gilchrist road, but the Illinois on is an Algonquin road wanna be.
Well today marks the 49th anniversary of the 1972 congers ny bus vs train crash and hopefully bud drivers stop doing this since the train will always win and the price to win can often lead to disaster
The price of wanting to beat a train is always one's life or more
@@florjanbrudar692 yep, couldn't agree more.
Like if you agree if the bus driver of the Fox River Grove crash should go to jail for not one single bit understanding why the School Children were screaming, panicking, and yelling
pnm nyami 4449 fan 2506 if you watch interviews from several kids that were sitting in the front of the bus, they said they couldn’t understand what the kids were yelling about either. Too many kids yelling at once I guess 🤷🏻♀️ I don’t remember what channel they were on but I watched them on CZcams so if you do a search for interviews of the survivors you should find them.
@@lisap8192 Well, yelling means something is probably wrong....slow reaction from this driver.Unfair that the first man goes to jail and not she..
@@amandamorgan2802 Actually the driver of the bus involved in the Congers NY tragedy was sentenced to five years probation. Disgusting!
