- Rail Disasters is a Train Simulator series simulating and recreating the events of real world train accidents
Episode 14: Chlorine Crisis
On January 6, 2005 at 2:40am EST, two Norfolk Southern trains collided near the Avondale Mills plant in Graniteville. SC. Nine people were killed and over 250 people were treated for toxic chlorine exposure due to one of the cars filled with chlorine gas rupturing and leaking. The accident was determined to be caused by a misaligned railroad switch and other issues had to resolved in the wake of the crash.
NOTE:
I know the locos from NS192 are not SD60s but we’re the closet I can get to

Today marks the 16th anniversary of the disaster that this town had to go through. And hopefully a disaster like this that involves chlorine won't ever happen again. And may those 9 people Rest In Peace.
Today marks the 15th anniversary of this crash and thank goodness nothing bad like this has happened since for the people of graniteville, South Carolina and may all thoses people who died Rest in piece
Dad was off to work when this happened. Couldn't call. We were all at home and he had no way of checking on us. Poor guy, but more importantly, I feel awful for the victims. What a terrible way to go.
Hey I was wondering if I could get more information about your perspective on the event for a project. Thank you.
I was on my way to work that morning and remember everything. SC troopers had all main intersections blocked through this area. I was trying to get to Aiken from Augusta GA. It was still dark so early morning. Will never forget.
Probably at the same time you were on the way to work, I was trapped in my car at ground zero. I was rescued by Aiken County/SRS Hazmat after sitting in my car. They were asking is anyone in the car. They couldn't hear me over the locomotive engines so I had to reach up and blow the horn on my car. They then busted the window. I thought the fumes were bad inside the car, but no. It was way much worse when I was outside the car. They put me on O2 and trucked me to Aiken where I was deconned and taken to the burn unit. Second and third degree burns on my throat and lungs. At 2.52 you can see my car under the tree. And at 2.57 you can see my car with the tree removed. I actually hit the end cap from a train car.
The entire crew of the train that was parked were fired from their jobs. The mill was forced to shut down immediately after the accident due to clean-up efforts and corrosion from the gas. The company never recovered from the losses.
Avondale Mills, The Company That Owned That Mill, Never Recovered From The Graniteville Mill Being Shut Down Due To The Train Collision.
Which was BS, as the engineer did nothing wrong, it was his conductor
18 years later, still a tragedy that shouldn’t be forgotten.
There was 3 SD60s on 192...and at the time, NS 192 was a Macon, Ga to Columbia, SC manifest
Nice. For the SD60’s, there are actual SD60 standard cabs available for TS. I’ll send you the link if you want
On January 6th, 2005, 2 Norfolk Southern Freight Trains collided head-on at 2:39 a.m. in the middle of the 🌙 before dawn. 9 were killed in the accident and nearly 500 were involving injured.
One person didn't do their job, that has to be a hell on earth to revisit. Paid to do job, freaking focus on doing it correctly. Been put in serious danger by don't care colleagues not doing their jobs.
Why is there no mention of the distant switch indicator that was located south of Graniteville that the nortbound train had passed and where the crew would have been notified of the position of the switch was set for diversion in to the siding. I investigated this accident.
History repeats itself yet again...
Yeah. The east Palestine Ohio derailment reminded me of this. Since they were both NS.
Chlorine gas, devastated the trenches of ww1. Devastated graniteville.
Great Video! I know you can trust on the SD60's
I remember the year before this, there was a set of tanker cars on a set of railroad tracks adjacent to the Sullivan Square subway station, one of which began leaking hydrochloric acid. They had to shut down the subway as well as several commuter rail lines for several days.
I live less than half a kilometer from a major CN line that moves hundreds of chemical tank cars every single day though my city. We get propane, liquid styrene, anhydrous ammonia, chlorine and nitrogen tetroxide. All of these chemicals will kill you very quickly should they leak and drift in your direction as an aerosol or gas. The nitrogen tetrachloride is especially terrifying if there is a leak from a derailment.
This is what happens when you don’t perform your job duties as required. This accident should have never happened
Awesome video! Btw @1:28 it’s 6653 not 6953. I believe that’s a typo you made
It's crazy how the front of the leader locomotives got only a little bit of damage like it could take way more damage
Nice. Almost 17 years ago. 4652 will be renumbered again to 6652 due to the AC44C6M's. 3:44 NS 3489 was a ex BN SD40-2 8129. In 2020 it was retired. In 2021 it was scrapped.
Brilliant video.
“Luckily no one was hurt but sir tophamm hat was cross”
Except for 9 people
Very good remake
0:00 Norfolk southern what's your function? 1:27 cooking up the country on the business ride. we haul everything... 2:08 -SAFLEY & ON TIME-
Or should he say non safely or and late
Most awesome vid!!!!!
Yes I’m Very Excited For It
great video, imo could’ve used the VRC GP59 and the eyein12 SD60
If you weren't 100% sure, why did you leave? Why didn't you go back? Isn't your job not just to do that but also be 100% sure that you didn't make a mistake. This isn't just a momentary error, the error was ongoing, the whole time since then of not going over what they did to make sure they didn't miss something. This isn't like leaving your wallet at home, the consequences are people dying.
there’s a limit on how fast trains can go through there now just so that nothing happens again
How'd you get the trains to derail realistically in TRS2019?
Cause that's how the simulation worked for me
@@penncentral6706 On my copy of the game, the cars just overlap and stop suddenly on the exact same section of track. Mine never derail like that.
Depends on what route or scenario you're on, loco you're using. It's how the game works
@@penncentral6706
You have a point. In my simulator the cars just go right through each other on all the presets. (keep in mind I am usinv Trainz for Android devices)
In my game the cars overlap and I don’t know how to change iy
Hey Can you do the Casselton Train Collision on Train Simulator?. Where you can find a BNSF Dash 9 and a GEVO.
0:10 that scared me
But it was just the horn
@@pdrumz534 that thing was high pitch and loud af
Question: If the switch was set like it was in this accident but the train was traveling in the opposite direction on the main line would the train derail?
Depends on how fast it's going. Only a the first few cars would but no collision I assume.
Now I'm worried since I live across the street from a train station and tracks in the middle of town.
It’s a whole new year
4:56
That was the thumbnail for Thunderbolt’s video
you know whats ironic? penncentrals channel pick is of an amtrak p42
' ,:)
And?
How about a video of the derailment in Louisiana where a clerk was at the throttle and put a bunch of chlorine tankers on the ground. 1988?
Why is the audio high pitched!
I love the railroad so much I can't work for them to much derailment
Wow 18 yrs ago.
You know there are some SD60Es on steam
one of them might be 6900
I can't find the location for this accident on Google maps
Waiting to watch!
why is the horn high pitched and the bell as well lol
This crash hurt NS, as they polluted a creek
Why must we waiiiitttt
I don’t think the crew of the parked train even deserved their jobs. I think their actions were total stupidity.
They didn’t even know another train was coming
Not to mention it clearly states they didn’t know the switch was set to the siding
4:46 6953 was converted to and SD60E renumbered #6900
You meant 6653 not 6953
That’s just sad everything is just sad
From there home town was 2 when it happened
Recvoer?
*Norfolk Southern what’s your function?*
Why the high horn
Who said there?
I'd hate to be remembered as the brakeman for P22...
What train simulator are you using? Microsoft Train Simulator?
Railworks 😑
@@penncentral6706 Thank you!! :-)
the lead engine from 192 is #6653 not #6953
If anyone has a personal connection linked with this event please let me know. I’m doing a project and need a primary source. Any and all information is appreciated
If You Do Anyther One Use Mandoponys "ballons" song But Its Insramental
NiNFABi because both locomotives were facing forward in the real accident look up a picture
I was in 8th Grade when this was going on!

2:34 what music is this does anyone know?
According to Shazam it's "Growing Up" by Nate Blaze. czcams.com/video/PJ52SOu3ZsU/video.html
@@RichardFelstead1949 ah thanks
Why is horn so loud it sracded me

the engines of 192 should both be facing forward
Why would that be the case? It's very common to have one facing the other way
@@ninfabi42 but during the accident both were facing frontward
