The transformations are accurate to the way the characters work, Cletus becomes Carnage while Venom envelops Eddie. The characters themselves? Not so much. Cletus talks to Carnage the way Eddie talks to Venom, instead of them being the same being. Basically, the directors selcetively applied the logic behind Carnage.
and because of that Cletus is able to morph without restriction. venom needs to move Eddie around and apply himself differently in order to not kill his host, while carnage can open holes in his chest or fit into small spaces without damaging his host. this also means carnage is not a suit and harm done to him also harms Cletus. so both have their merits and downsides.

That being said I have no idea what triggered the other symbiot colours, like why shriek was yellow or why hybrid was green. Carnage was really the only one that was ever actually explained

Carnage is red because he bonded with Cletus on a cellular level. The symbiot is literally in his blood which is why it’s red instead of black.
That being said I have no idea what triggered the other symbiot colours, like why shriek was yellow or why hybrid was green. Carnage was really the only one that was ever actually explained
