I'm an older Millennial, pretty much raised like a Gen-X-er. I remember very little parental involvement growing up. I pretty much wandered the neighborhood with my friends on our bikes and rollerblades. I was pretty much left to raise myself, and being that I was the oldest, raise my brother too. Fast forward to now, with two kids of my own, and my husband (also an older millennial) and I both agree that how we grew up wasn't the answer either. We had very little screen time and spent the majority of childhood outside, however we had checked out parents. We allow video games on rare occasions, neither of our kids will have personal computers or phones of any kind. We have a family computer for school work that is located in a very public part of our house under constant supervision. Phones are for safety reasons only, and not for personal use. Absolutely NO SOCIAL MEDIA of any kind. We do activities as a family together and we keep our kids involved in extracurricular activities that they love and can feel that sense of achievement and pride in doing. Both my husband and I think that outside time is important, but family time is more important... We try to do everyday activities together with our kids. We are a very close family, and I feel very blessed because of it. I feel like my parents missed out.

All parents have been "checked out" since the beginning of humanity just because there was no other way. People that think that the past was "so much better" and they imagine parents mentoring their children and always following up with them. Imagine though that you have 5 kids, no electricity so no washing mashine, no refrigerator, no oven and you have to grow your own food and make your own clothes, and you will understand how little time was left for parents to "play". I refuse to believe humanity new nothing about raising kids until now. So maybe the free range is the best way to do it.

Agreed Yellowroses!!! I was born in 1980 and I feel like half gen x half millennial.
I have 2 kids and they're so fun, funny and smart. I adore the time I spend with them. My parents weren't just checked out they were unconscious with alcohol and "illegal substances"
I was left on my own so most of the time and it made me clingy until I matured enough to overcome it.
But I often think of how much my parents missed the love and happiness of just being with your own kids.

We don’t do screen time, both my children go to an outdoor school during the week. So they do all their learning outdoors. I take them to the park, on hikes, we live right next to the beach. It’s great but sometimes I need to get into the flow of my home. I struggle to keep my home running. To get laundry done and make dinner because I have boys that want to be outside. When I was a kid my mom told me and my 5 siblings to go play and come back for dinner. Now if our kids want to go outside or play with a friend we have to set up a play date or drive them to a park. Which means I’m carrying them around all day tending to their need to be outside and get energy out. It’s so hard to get into the flow of my job as a stay at home mom who also has needs. Just wish i could send my boys out to play while I do the work of the mother and they do the work of the child (play).

@@itscool770my advice to you would be you are doing too much they are 5 and 3 they do not need outdoor school unless you leave them there as daycare so you can do what you need to at home and for your health. Programs are expensive it would be interesting to see if you could afford some outdoor space of your own if you had an extra money in your budget. Divide your day up into work time with the children and playtime going on your hikes spending time at the beach. Things will get easier when they’re about eight years old to take this time slow and enjoy it.

      Dear homeschooling Mom
My mom pulled me out of 3rd grade, private school. I could not read - thus not write, not do math. My teachers told me I was dumb everyday. I was then homeschooling all the way through 12th grade. She thought the same thing till my first achievement test, not a state test, but the Iowa Basics that are the standard. I tested in 4th grade after 3 months of being home scrolled. After that I and my siblings tested 4-5 years ahead of are grade. She never pushed us into a grade above us. Our lesuire time was spent reading well above are grade level. My grandmother ( a teacher) They are given the spirit of learning and will excel when my mom was not sure.
I college we took the entrance exams and it was stuff we learned in middle school.
You are great and can do it. You will start to see a big difference as tour child gets older.

I am 27 and have not had kids yet, I am someone without too many people in a support system around me and this video explained so much about what to do about situations I feared. One of the reasons for my reservations against having kids anytime soon are explained in this video and was really eye opening for me. My biggest fear was what the heck would I do with them once I had them? Everyone is always inside, I would go crazy and i feared my stress levels would be all they feel from just trying to pass time in the days. This made a lot of sense to me

Parenting is living and learning just like you are now. Kids will test your thoughts and beliefs because they want answers. My kid has taught me a lot about myself, too. I waited to have a kid not only because, well I needed the right partner but I was afraid I could never afford it. I was lucky to stay home a few years. I would just throw my kid in the stroller, go for a jog, go to the park. Take him to the beach, pool. You find things to do and meet up groups.

HARRAH! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! For describing and validating my childhood! We played in the neighborhood with neighborhood kids, and down at the park. A block and half away was the circumference...hearing distance for when Mom called us in for lunch. Several parents had a "call" for their family. Our mom learned to do "The Tarzan Yell". We heard that and instantly gave the yell back, immediately dropped what we were doing and ran home...laughing. We played with kids in the 3 vlock radius neighborhood and several of their parents had the family call, so it was a fun thing.
In the summer, the schools had what was called "Playground" staffed by paid university students. Puzzles and paints and paper were laid put on picnic tables, ball games were coordinated, etc. Our mom's younger siblings would take the train up from nowhere Arkansas for the summer and they learned howri interact and handle themselves with other kids...white kids (where they lived which was very segregated).
We naturally learned how to set boundaries, how to share, what other people were doing in the world (neighborhood).
The parks' play equipment was spread out so kids had to run, race, scream, and laugh from equipment to equipment.
We lived near a softball diamond's in town and there were night games we could attend with strict rules, safety guidance, and be home before the ball diamond lights went out or before the moon reached a certain zenith in the sky.
One of those neighbor kids and I have reconnected on Facebook and we're having fun revisiting our childhood. We're the generation who has motor homes traveling the country (me no longer) and he keeps us posted about his trips and how his wife is learning how to drive and park the RV... they went to the Albuquerque Baloon Festival this year...
Are we ready to retire, NO. We're still functional compared to the lower expectation from being raised in the "latch key" environment kids now are oin.

I am a school teacher in France and kids have so much difficulties to focus and stay still. Part of the explanations is that they don't have enough outside play during their freetime. The consequences are so huge. We, teacher, are overwelmed and feel lost 😢

Hard thing is when you live in an apartment somewhere where the schools are basically falling apart because the government doesn't give them money and also doesn't have parks, playgrounds, beaches, nothing. Most you got is playing in the balcony.

When i was living in an apartment growing up there were still kids around, we played house, dolls, etc. we played patty cake, jump rope, rode bikes, all that, you dont NEED a park or playground, you need imagination. I grew up making mud pies and making tacos out of leaves and dirt and finding bugs under bricks. :)

Yes screens are addictive but people don't want to realize that it is not just the screens that are addictive. It is also the fact that most kids today live in urban or suburban ones which either make it ultra-dangerous to play outside or there are just no kids of similar age around to play with. I was raised in a city yet at the age of 8-9 years old we were hordes of kids playing out in the streets roaming around the neighborhood with no issue, no threat, the risks were truly minimal - it would be extremely rare for something to happen. 4 decades forward, the city is filled with every scum of the earth that decided to invade the country, it is extremely dangerous for kids to roam around on their own, kids are hence locked up inside their houses and shuttled to "activities". But activities such as sports and music, which kids do tend to enjoy today too, are just taking 2 to 4 hours per week. School also takes more houses today, back in our times it was just 5 hours, today it is all-day long precisely to provide kid-guarding services to working parents. So kids are basically living between house and school and a couple of hours of activities and that's it. If they are not doing their homework, they will be on their screens. You can try to ban the screens but once 8 out of 10 classmates do have access, it will be increasingly difficult to keep it that way unless your kid concedes to your ways. And most kids won't.
The avoidance of screen addiction starts by finding ways to get the kids to socialize with other kids again outside school. Good luck with that in multi-racial societies, totally fragmented, where the one looks with suspicion the other.

I’m thankful that my parents lived in the country and my mom stayed home with us. We weren’t really allowed to be outside unattended until I was maybe 6-7. Then as we got older we would go play in the woods or do chores with animals or play ball etc for hours. But we still had a very structured meal, reading, inside activity and chore schedule. It makes me a little sad to hear so many people felt like their parents let them raise themselves and just locked them outside. I do not consider that good parenting either.

Being uncomfortable is so good for all of us. we are an over fed, air conditioned, hyper screened society. Your kids will be just fine with a canteen of water (the pool) in the backyard and OUTSIDE. Trust me. I lived in Texas as a kid. I sweated my behind right off but I had a blow up pool and popsicles and I was FINE. It did so much for me to learn to be uncomfortable. It’s so healthy for humans

Thinking about what all can go wrong and listing reasons why not to do things is exactly why parents are in the conundrum they are today. Absentee parenting isn't the answer by any stretch of the word, but finding 10000 reasons why something is too stressful is the actual stress in the activity. If you just went ahead and did it, you'll immediately realize that whatever you left at home your child will forget about in 2 minutes and do somethig else. It's just that simple, but that difficult for some.

When my husband and I were married in 2020 we paid off all our debt and were saving for our down-payment on a home during our first year of marriage. We live in a yardless apartment which is low priced for our area. Now with a baby, cost of living, daycare, and post-covid housing... it seems impossible to leave. It's depressing. We're currently choosing between our child having a sibling or owning a home with a yard within the next 5 years. Can't afford both.

My husband and I moved to Scandinavia (where my husband is from) when our son turned 10. Life is still life but my son knows how to walk everywhere. Eat well. Enjoy being outside and he takes initiative to do it now at almost 16.
And it is nice because it is normal in society here so most of the parents around us parent the same way. Nothing is ever perfect of course but I feel I have given my son a gift. And we go to the States all the time too and he is also American and has family and friends there. It’s a good balance.

Kids these days are one with their phone, it contains contact to all their friends at the push of a button and their entire social personality. You cannot just cut that off. They need to be motivated to play outside the way Pokemon Go did, phone in hand, interacting with other players. We need more games like that.
