@DecentR I don't think any of his peers are staying just because of his talent he didn't have to work hard. Personally I think he even had to work harder on recognizing what his talent is a learning to hone his talent and enhance it to make sure he is not overtaken by players.

@@ramonbs6075 Absolutely I hear you, that's the difference between them. CR7 honed his body and drive and skill. Whereas Messi focused on maintaining his body to keep up but I feel like he focused most of his hardwork on improving his game sense or his game iq. It's still remarkable that both of these players are still performing at their respective ages. Most legends are retired, like look at their peers: Wanye Roney, Thierry Henry just to name a few.
My personal opinion is both are amazing players, Messi is like the sun whearas Ronald is like the moon. The moon may get its light from the sun but we still appreciate both for their unique attributes.

To anybody who really understands football, Messi was already the GOAT before the WC. The one deciding factor touched on in this video is his vision. For all his skills with his feet and body movements, the one thing that sets him apart from all other players is his football IQ. This, to me, is what puts him above even Pele and Maradona, especially given the pace the game is played at today.
Some of his haters have complained that he 'walks the field'. What they don't understand is that his 'walking' serves several purposes:
1) It throws off opponents, leading them to think that he's absent from the game. When he comes alive, you're in trouble.
2) He's x-raying the field and identifying the opponents' weak spots, the cracks, and where his own teammates are. This is why when he receives the ball, he usually already knows what he's going to do and it's often the unexpected. The pass to Molina against the Netherlands is a prime example of this. Nobody saw it coming. And to make it more outrageous, he executes it nutmegging the defender covering him.
3) He conserves his energy. He's not a player with a lot of physical stamina, especially at this age, and he knows it. Therefore he makes his body a very efficient little machine.
If there ever was a debate about the GOAT, it was never between Messi and CR. That was just media hype to get ratings. The real debate is between Messi, Maradona, and Pele. Ronaldo is simply not in that category as a player. He has impressive numbers, but when you boil it down to the facts, one third of his goals come from either the penalty spot or are tap-ins.
Messi is the most complete football player ever to have played the beautiful game. This is proven by how he changed his style in his later years. He knows he can no longer make those electrifying slaloms he used to when he was younger. Some try to say Haaland's season is comparable to Messi in 2012 as playing in the PL is harder than La Liga. But try to think of each of his goals and if they were as creative as Messi's. Haaland is a complete forward playing in a well-oiled City team, whereas Messi played in a Barcelona team that depended on him for creativity, and that is the fundamental difference that most people forget when they try to put Messi just to goal numbers. Anyone that tries to pin Messi to just goals dont understand the beauty of the game Messi plays.

You seem to forget that Messi played in a Barcelona team with Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets, arguably the best midfield trio ever. Those Barça players with also Puyol, Piqué, etc. were the basis of the teams that won two European Championships and in 2010 a World Cup wearing Spain's outfit, so with no Messi on their side. That's how good they were. Messi was the sublime icing of a top cake.

I truly don't understand Messi haters. How can you dislike him? As a human being he has shown to be humble, down to earth and not seeking ANY attention. You don't see him show off his wealth, houses, cars - nothing. No drama with women, his wife is with him since childhood. No team drama ever - he respects his teammates and the opposition. As a footballer there's no point to say anything, because everything has been said.
This is the reason I prefer him over Ronaldo. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Cristiano - he is a phenomenal athlete. The hunger, the work-ethic, the discipline - truly mind-blowing. But from all I've seen and read over the years, I just can relate much more to Messi than him.

Even before the World Cup he was the Greatest of all time. Ronaldo was a great Striker and goal scorer where Messi is the best all round player. Its like you got the Golden boot in the World cup for most goals then you got the Golden Ball for the best player of the Tournament and this is what Messi is. Its not just about scoring goals for Messi (even though he scores a lot) its about his dribbles, his passes, his assists, he does it all.
And even at 35, I still rate him above Mbappe and the best player still playing. He can basically still do everything he could at 19, but the only thing he has lost his pace, so he isnt as effective while dribbling now. But he has everything else still and that shows you how good he is. Btw, I used to think Maradona was the best, but he didn't keep the highest standard for as long as Messi did (I think mainly because of the drugs he consistently took and it shortened his career) while Messi hasn't lost any of his skills and still just as good when he plays at 35 as he was at 19, this is why Messi is the GOAT for me.

Here in Argentina we knew he was different since he went to La Masia, I remember it clearly, watching the local news around '99/2000 mentioning him going to Europe at that very young age, sports media started rising the hype, looking for the next Maradona as they did during the 90's (and we always had great, great players, those were the times of Aimar and Riquelme just to mention a couple). And when he made his debut with our national team in a forgotten 2004 night we learned that this time, it really was something different, way above other amazing talented players. This guy had it, that natural born magic, like Diego but different... Still brings tears to my eyes. I know everyone tries to justify if he's the GOAT or not, for me that debate is pointless, in fact I often fantasize wondering what would have happened if Leo played his prime with Cristiano as teammates, they would probably owned the UCL for at least a decade...

I totally share Thierry Henry's comparative views of Messi and Ronaldo. Ronaldo works really, really hard to reach as far as he has while Messi is naturally gifted and also works hard. Its the age old tale of the born genius vs those who have to claw their way into the spotlight.
