War Cake * Depression Cake * Poor Man's Cake + Pumpkin Spice War Cake - No Butter, Milk or Eggs!

- This is a recipe called War Cake, Depression Cake, and Poor Man's Cake. It is very cheap to make and it uses no eggs and no milk. It is called War Cake because people used to make it during WWII when certain ingredients were rationed. You can make it in two loaf pans or in a tube pan or Bundt pan.
After I filmed this video, I decided to make the recipe again, but this time, substitute some canned pumpkin for the butter and some pumpkin pie spice for the cinnamon. It came out really well that way also and it's a great cake for anyone who is vegan or does not eat any animal products at all. It can be made with no milk, no eggs, and no butter! It's also heart healthy since it's a no fat cake. - Jak na to + styl

I laugh everytime I watch this.😂😂😂 This reminds me so much of my grandpa and grandma who are now gone. I miss them very much. I really love watching grandma and grandpa Feral. These videos take me back to my childhood. The recipes are good too. Easy to make, inexpensive and delicious. I really loved the tuna and noodles and the chocolate coconut macaroons. Tomorrow I will make this recipe.

Grandma Feral I hope you don't mind I going to tweek this recipe. I was thinking with the pumpkin, use dried cranberries instead of raisins. My grandmother would make this, the raisins would hard as rocks! Nothing got thrown out. Peace.

I've never been much for baking, historically, but these cakes have me intrigued -- I'm going to have to try both of these. Thank you, so much, dear Grandma Feral, for these marvelous recipes.
A thought: if one wants a slightly different twist to the pumpkin cake, try using Oriental five-spices powder in lieu of the pumpkin-spice mix. I find that this small substitution adds a subtle difference that lights up the palate.

i tried the first one and it was really nice. Very easy, and moist when cooked. I have made it twice more, though I used half cinnamon and half mixed spice. Lovely.

I've made this for our church meal, and I took one small apple cored and peeled it and diced it then added it to the batter before baking, Came out so good, and moist.

Come to think of it, reminds me of my mom & mimi (she didn't like grandma, made her feel old lol God Bless her heart) and I remember growing up getting block cheese (if they didn't run out). Mimi made candy, using molasses only. All she did was put the molasses on snow, or ice. It would get hard and there ya go, molasses candy!

I didn't see a recipe so I made this for myself and figured I would share. hope I got it right ;D I like to think of it as
a delicious Pumkin loaf / muffins ;D
In large pot add
3 c water
2 c raisens
Boil for 10 min. add
1 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 c butter or pumpkin.
Cover and cool for 3 hrs.
3 c sifted flour
1 Tsp baking soda and powder, tbls (or to taste) cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice. mix, then add wet ingredients. Don't over mix.
If you add nuts toss them in flour before adding to wet mix. Pour into greased and floured loaf and/or muffin pans. Bake in preheated 350° oven for 1 hour. Cool on wire rack and top with confectioners sugar or
add water and make a glaze. Sounds good sliced and top with butter the way we eat my grandmothers applesauce cake yum!!!

If you can't get pumpkin you could use cooked sweet potato, yams, or any winter squash.

My mon made Poor Mans Cake twice a week in the 1950's She used apple sauce instead of butter.

adding the moisture and texture. 💖😎

I might have to try this recipe but, substitute the sugar with a sugar substitute as I am not supposed to have the sugar. I thought that sugar would have also been rationed back in War Days. I used to watch a British War Show and even back then butter was rationed and the boy whose family ran the dairy farm got in trouble for giving his girlfriend extra rations of butter.
We use a lot of butter so I don't think that we would have done very well back then in this house hold.
