Looking for the Cabeza Petroglyphs - Finding our limits

- Oh man, what a hike this one was. While camped near the town of Ajo, AZ, we set out to find an area of a thousand or more petroglyphs and pictographs, only to find the limit of our endurance.

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If you're into being off-grid and boondocking or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

It's just so easy getting caught up in that "just a little farther" mentality hiking in the desert. Thank you for filming the desert blooms, sprinkling of colorful joy in a harsh environment is a beauty in itself.
The hike made for a good video and Linda’ mate call was fun too lol … you go Linda
another great adventure...thanks for taking us along
Thanks for coming along with us, Randy. We enjoy your company!
The Desert Blooms around Tucson have been fantastic!! Take Care and get Linda some Pie!
Felt as if I was wandering with you as a welcome addition. Thanks for taking me.
Any time! We always enjoy your company, see you on the next one!
There is no such thing as a disappointing hike. Just some hikes better than others.
Good advice about proper vehicles. Hope your ankle is better soon, Linda. Thanks for the video. The desert is always interesting.
Thanks, Michael, my ankle is okay. I think it just got tired before the rest of me did.
It's so cool to see Linda blowing in her fists like that. My dad taught me to do that years and years ago. Skills everyone should know.😅
It was wise to abandoned the search. Age has its benefits called " Gut Feeling "
Got to see some beautiful desert blooms and such with you two, I call that a, win, win.
Thanks, buddy!
At our age, the most awesome thing about coming up against your limits (oh yes, it's awesome), is in the trying. If the desire is there and some of the muscles, a modicum of balance (use tools if necessary), then we have to try. KUDOS!
Yeah, I think you're right, because it just becomes more challenging.
Tough hike, but beautiful scenery! Linda, your "desert ilima" flowers look to be remarkably spot-on from this video perspective - - nice example of convergent evolution . . . so cool.
Thanks! I see a lot of plants that grow wild in Hawaii out in the desert areas and MT. Makes me feel right at home.
Another awesome video. I feel for Linda’s poor ankle. I hope it’s doing better with a rest and you two have a wonderful day.❤❤
Enjoyed that challenging hike while I sat in my easy boy chair, thank you again for sharing something most of us would not attempt but we got to go with Linda & Rick..yeah!
That area is beautiful. I was there a couple weeks ago. The little flower blooms were amazing!
Love that desert as I do the Mojave Desert...nothing like it...jet noise, the sound of freedom !
Take care...thx for the adventure.
That's what Linda says about the jet noise. We love it.
Looks like the kind of trail I use to like doing 20 years ago. Hope Linda is feeling better and you guys stay safe and healthy.
Thanks, Linda's ankle was okay by the time we got back to camp.
I have to laugh at my old age and take it in stride..It is also snowing here in Montana and we got another layer of snow so enjoy the desert, even in the rain.. Stay safe!
We're back in MT now and doing chores. It was pretty cold in AZ the whole time we were there but at least it wasn't snow-covered where we were.
Good morning folks. So sorry Linda's ankle is bothering her. It doesn't seem to gave affected her great sense of humor though😊. You guys stay safe out there and we'll look forward to seeing you next week.
See you next week!
Thank you Rick and Linda, another great video. Linda hope your ankle is better. ❤
looked rough! You went farther than I would have thank you ALL stay safe
I know when you have a channel like this people are always giving you advice but I just wanted to say I have a bad ankle as well and I've learned to never go anywhere without a ace bandage or they have some very nice bands that go around ankles and knees etc that can help you out in a bind. Carrying a collapsible lightweight walking stick helps as well taking the pressure off some of those injured areas. You guys take care, and like you said at your age (and my age) you did pretty well. considering the rough terrain
Thanks, Kenny, we appreciate the suggestions.
Speedy recovery for Linda. Be careful guys. Take care, Mike
Thanks, Mike!
Wonderful to hear Linda's sweet Hawaiasn phrase to the little hybiscus
Please know your limits..I forgot water once considered drinking after a stranger that offered me a drink of their water..I went back extra slow but learned a lesson..better safe than sorry guys. Another great video greetings from NC and just one more mile
Hello Candy!
Grenades! 😱. Holy cow. I’m so sorry you didn’t find the petroglyphs. This was such an interesting video. I didn’t know about blue flags and phones. I really like your videos.
Glad you enjoyed!
Get well soon Lynda. It's great to see you again. Until next episode. I'd pass on that road, thanks for the heads up.
Nice to hear from you! And thank you, my ankle is okay now, hope you're doing great yourself. See you on the next one.
I wouldn't say it is hell to get older but it is harder 😊nice job you two , sorry you didn't get to see them .
I'm stubborn and may need to go back out there!
I just love your videos-hope Lindas ankle is better today. The weather has beem a challenge-we have been blessed here in NW Arkansas. 🙏✌🌎💞
Linda's ankle is better, it just got sore from over use that day. Back in MT now and we still have winter!
Thanks for taking us along😮 it was interesting but awful rough smart move turning back and not going any further👍 Linda hope your ankle feels better
It feels better, Teresa. It just got overused on that hike, thanks for wishing me well.
Love your desert rain description also the moisture seems to make the desert colors POP. Also where are your poles??? And thank you as always for the wonderful, scenic and informative videos.
I have my walking stick and Linda should have had hers too.
Years ago we lived in the path of the flights into McChord Air Force Base. The sound would totally be deafening and make the house vibrate. We brought home a new baby at the time and she could sleep right through it but if someone talked in the house she woke up, we live quite a ways farther away from the base now so we don’t hear the planes as much
I got to tell you Rick, you have been blessed with a partner who enjoys that degree of adventure. And to Linda, visa versa. Wishing you a quick recovery. Really enjoyed the footage . Thanks.
Wow, thank you, Paul.
Thank you for the good video.
Thanks for sharing
That was some pretty rough terrain. Hopefully Linda’s soreness went away pretty quickly. I recently watched one of your videos from 3 years ago (vehicle tool kit). Rick has lost a lot of weight since then.
Keeping it off is tough! This winter has been hard and I need to get active again.
Hello there. Bless you both and we will pray for Linda that her ankle will heal so she can continue to enjoy the walks🥰
Thanks so much, Vickie.
Good video, and besides the rough terrain it is beautiful scenery, the warning sign about drug smugglers would put me of camping.
Yes, we didn't see anyone camping way out there but closer to the highway there were a few outfits camped.
Linda's a tough cookie.
You all are definitely adventurous!! 😄
Wow! I'm the first commentor. Glad to see you all are up and about. My wife too broke her ankle years ago and it took years before she could not warn of impending bad weather. Linda, please be careful on uneven ground. Love you all. Good health to both of you.
Thank you for being the first, Peter! I go slow on uneven ground and watch where I place each step. Makes me slow on hikes but hopefully I don't re-injure myself.
Linda is so darn cute with her mating call comment "how rude, no answer". that looks like a rough trail for a vehicle and walking! although I'm an army brat the bombing in the distance would freak me out a bit, I'd be on edge. lol
Very adventurous both of you!! Seriously it's amazing what is out in the desert... I am glad you were very honest about the trip and not actually recommending it... Some things are "worth" a little extra stress and other things just are not! another enjoyable adventure on our part watching though... felt bad when Linda's ankle started hurting.... Take care!
Hey guys..been over plenty of roads like that down here in Arizona. I thought about checking that area out..but settled for Organ pipe. Camped on Darby Wells Rd after watching your video where you camped further down on..that area is huge with lots to see. Took my Ebike about 5 miles in.. checking out the area. Take care !
That's such a great area to ride!
Linda you are such an inspiration, I would never have even tried the path...even from the air...lol...good you are in great physical shape and petite..girl....!!!!!
Thanks, Cynthia! I just love hiking and exploring.... ~~Linda~~
Thanks much guys! This one’s been on my bucket list for years. You 2 are such good company that I subscribed for more!
Thank you!!!
Thank you for trying and taking us along!
Our pleasure!
Hello my friends hope Linda’s is feeling better with the ankle, thanks for the wonderful video 😊
Linda's ankle felt better by the time we got back to camp. Thanks for watching, Wisconsin Wander!
@@gonagain so glad to hear thanks guys appreciate your videos
I’m glad to see you guys made it out of there okay. That trail looked really rough. Take care. 👍
Orthopedic Shoes For Hiking, get fitted professionally!
Love the video! Blessings💕
Linda I hope you feel better asap! This is one for the books and you can say “I’m glad I made it!”. You’re tougher than you thought you were, or tougher than you wanted to be. My hat is off to both of you! Lots of these adventures end up with someone injured, needing rescue or worse. You did a great job of planning, leaving records of your activities, monitoring your progress and had the good judgement to turn around. Can I make a recommendation? Hiking poles are so helpful for people with sore joints, especially up or down hills. I was just at the Nevada state Park Valley of Fire outside Las Vegas and took a 0.75 mile easy hike on the “Mouse’s Tank trail”. The petroglyphs were amazing, the hike was easy and my hiking poles protected my balance many times. I have a couple of vertebral compression fractures and have been rehabbing my back for a year. I was so proud of myself for finishing in good shape.
We've been on that trail, it's a beautiful and amazing area. We almost always have our walking sticks with us but we forgot them on this trip. Hope you're doing well, Nancy. Nice to hear from you. ~~Linda
Go with your gut. Always
Thanks!
Thank you so much, Robert! We appreciate this very much.
Nicely done Rick🤙
Hmmm, not a trail or a road, it's an obstacle course, a real ankle twister. Thanks for the warning, Aloha!
That's a good description! Mahalo for watching this one, come along with us on the next one.
Rick, Do you ever air down your tires on rough roads? Linda's quite the trooper as are you. It's great that you guys stay active. It's inspiring! Fearfully and wonderfully made. Safe travels Perry
I should, I just keep forgetting to do that.
Me and Jenny ran into cartel smugglers in that area. We took a hike and on the way back Jenny was taking photos of organ pipe cactus in the magic yellow light before dark. I said “Gotta go or we’ll be hiking in the dark.” We were nearing a wash and suddenly I saw 5 men all in camo with big green plastic bales on their backs. I pushed Jenny’s shoulders down and said “ssshhh, get down!” She whispered “Are those hikers?” I said “ Hell no, we don’t want to meet these men, they may kill us!”Luckily we were over their right shoulder and they must have not seen us. I put my hand in my chest pack and onto my .357 magnum. We waited, but had to go across their path behind them. We hustled to the car and 2 men were there and approached us asking which direction we were going.I had one hand on the corner of my chest carry rig in case I needed my weapon fast. I told them “We are leaving, no passengers!” I stayed facing them as Jenny got in, and I waited til they walked away before I turned my back to get in the door. We called 911 and they had Border Patrol meet us. We asked if they would be going after them with a helicopter, but he said no, and they were tracking 5 groups. He wasn’t about to take them on by himself. We won’t be traveling there again.
We're curtailing our trips, too. We've never had any encounters like that although camping in the Barry M. Goldwater Range was close. Had fresh footprints going by our camp coming from the south and headed north. We left right after seeing those.
HA HA HA!!! rick, i'm sorry for laughing, but when you flipped up your sunglasses, it made you look like you had crazy huge eyebrows. i love watching your videos and you and linda always brighten my day. you gotta go back and let linda see your "mario" eyebrows. i just love both of you. and thanks for making such informative, interesting videos. i'm too old to do what you guys do with your hikes and all, and it's wonderful to feel like i'm right there with you when you share your adventures with us. thank you, and god bless you both.
Thank you for coming along with us on our adventures, Jan. We enjoy your company! 😁
Almost sounds like mourning dove next time Linda…
Love it!
Thanks!!
don't know if ankle compression sleeve would work for Linda, but they work wonders on my hinckey knees when walking and hiking over uneven terrain.
I wonder how the water gets to those tanks.
Most of them are connected to a well.
I kept expecting a Far Side cartoon with both of you having white spots on your backs and the Fighter Jets flying over.
Oh yea, that image popped into our heads too.
We camped in that area a couple of years ago and loved the desert but got real tired of the fighter jet noise. Also been to Organ Pipe twice and really liked that. We @ 65 and 70 do a lot of off trail hiking but limit ourselves to 6 mi. out and back. Just can't do the big hikes we did when we were young and don't want to get too far away from our trailer. You guys would get a kick out of our home built 10 ft. trailer. Check our vids for a tour.
Hello Rick and Linda just a fast hello I'm under the weather the last few days I hope you understand.
No worries, Den, just get better soon!
It's probably a good thing they (the petroglyphs) are so remote or they would be vandalized more. You made me laff with your "Wrong agains", maybe a good name for you back up channel? (Meant in a humorous way), I know I had a good time, Thank You. I hope you leg and ankle are doing better Linda.
That just may be the story of my life!
@@gonagain I was first.
And you didn't even find any PIE. Have a good day.
PS you should check out the recipe for Water Pie. I have never tried it, but it sounds appropriate for this trip.
I'll check it out! Thanks, TM.
Bummer! That was a lot of walking for no payoff.
I know, right? Although the potato chips were pretty darn good.
@@gonagain Are those chips part of your healthy diet? Doc. now has me under Double Secret Probation. 65 pounds is all he asks.
Great video . Enjoy the area. Lots more to see . Where were Linda's walking stick or maybe 2 hiking poles
We forgot our walking sticks!
love your vids! As a retired dude myself who loves camping , your show is inspiring to me, especially during the long winters up here where I live. is is so nice to see you two roaming around in warm weather. I was wondering, how would one of your e-bikes have handled those roads you were on? I am about to buy one and I love dirt roads.
The ebike would have been great and a lot faster over the road than my car was. A portion of that trail might have required walking the bike.
Good video 😀 you need hiking pole's all ways when hiking takes pressure of knees and ankles you only had a wood staff can throw you off balance just saying safe travels 😊
Thanks for the tips!
I know how Linda feels, I broke my ankle 6 years ago and an uneven surface really makes my leg hurt.
Beautiful area, would be quite a surprise staking a tent then hitting one of those unexploded ordnance.
Do you air down tires on that type road?
Thank you for your effort.
🙋🏼
What was up with the blur, starting at 22:00? Linda's whistle got Snoopy's attention...LoL...
Fixing it now, Mark. Thanks for the heads up on that.
Good on you to know your limits. Dissapointment yes but you accomplished a lot for someone our age 😅. Think I’ll take your advice though for this solo tutuwahine!
Mahalo, Megs! How are you doing and are you still in Kansas?
@@gonagain have made it clear through to California after 14 days of trouble with my battery system due to faulty wiring by Camping World when putting in new batteries wrong. Could have caused a fire in the rig. Thank heavens for nomad friends who were able to fix the problem. But not before having to pay for 6 nights in a hotel, loss of food and many stressful nights. A real learning process. Alls working now.
Are you two still in AZ? I’m in Phoenix area but was just in Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge last week and would love to stop by and say hi one day. I really enjoy your videos and hope you are staying safe. Enjoy. Doug
No, we're back in Montana now. Thanks!
It Does'nt take along time for Ibuprofin to kick
In with me! I have taken it since the 1970's!
But I know to make sure to Always have food in my stomatch b4 I take it!
Very important or it can be very hard on my stomatch!!!
Linda, Should use those
Elastic ankle braces! When she goes hiking.
And stay ahead of the game that way, giving her support!
Before I retired I took care of elderly people convelesing from surgery
And helping with light work they needed help with!
One lady I helped when I started helping her. She said her doctor wanted to put her in a institution
Because she was having mental problems.
First thing I always did was research their Med's.
I found she was on 3 different Med's that should not have taken with the others!!! Problem solved! She was Very greatfull! I suggested she have a serious talk with her doc, who wanted to put her away! He should of know
Not to give her those med's!!! She also went to
Another pharmacy. So never go to more than one pharmacy without
Notifying them both!!!
Thanks for the tip on the ankle brace and I'll make sure she gets one. Good thing that you cared enough about that lady to check her meds, that must have really helped her.
At 1850 in it almost looked like I saw something on one of the rocks on the left side of the trail but when I went back and looked closer I guess it’s not. Almost looked li,e a 17. Sorry you guys did t get to see what you were looking for.
We'd go back and do it again except for the rough road getting there.
I think I'll pass on the bombs! I've lived near military bases 90% of my life so I'm used to the "air shows"
Take care of the ankle
thanks rick...some of ur camera shots were blured out..
Thanks, buddy, we're fixing it now.
A personal question. Were you two doing adventures like this together when you were in your mid to late 20's? In the summer of 1983 while I was stationed at 29 palms I got a hair up my ass and rode my 1982 Goldwing Interstate motorcycle out to Death Valley as I recall I think it was on the 4th of July weekend. Totally insane move due to the heat but I was a 19 year old hard charging Marine at the time and I wanted to check out the valley. When I got there it was crazy hot and I was riding like a squid in shorts and a tank top with my helmet on the helmet hook before the helmet law just to avoid heatstroke. There was no one there at least outside and the ranger's trucks were parked by their hut with the AC unit going full blast. I was about to split and maybe head up into the Panamints to find a cooler place to camp due to the heat but I noticed a couple and their one lone van in the campground at Furnace creek and decided to go over and say hi since they were as crazy as me. They turned out to be a couple of adventures. The man was an engineer who traveled the world doing construction projects and went on expeditions between jobs, his wife whom I thought was Asian was Hawaiian and they both lived in Hawaii but ventured to the mainland to vacation and explore. I ended up hanging out with them for the rest of the afternoon and evening, camped there for the night and split at first light before it got insanely hot again. I've been watching and enjoying your videos and wondering if that was you two I met back then. I didn't commit their names to memory since this was back before social media, I was unlikely to ever run into them again and I met a lot of people on my adventures at the time anyway too many to keep in touch with. Unlikely but my curiosity has been peeked since I've been a subscriber.
No, that wasn't us, but back in those days we were sailing the south pacific and, when at home, doing road trips in our VW bus. It sounds to me like you've been bitten by the adventure bug all of your life too.
I had a petroglyph, show up on my dashboard yesterday, it looked like a gas pump.
Right? They do mean something, we just don't know what.
Great videos! This is a bit off subject. I pull a 26' trailer. I'm in need of new tires. Since you do a lot of off road travel I was wondering what brand and make are your tires? Any info would help. Thanks!
The only tires I can recommend are Goodyear Endurance. That's what we're currently running and it's because of glowing reports from others.
@@gonagain Great. Thanks for the reply. Take care!
@@gonagain Rick, I'd like to apologize. I think I mislead you with my tire question. I was wanting to know what brand and make tires you use on your vehicle. The way I stated it I might have gave you the wrong idea. Was the Goodyear Endurance for your trailer or vehicle? If it was for your vehicle, maybe you did read through my confusion (Grin). Again, great videos and thanks!
Nice hike but disappointing! Different topic...how often do you lube bearings on trailer?
Yeah, with illegal activity in the area, you definitely need to make sure you are packing proper personal protective equipment. The scenery was interesting.
Definitely, on both points.
I have a question for Rick .. if I have a jeep rated to tow 3500 lbs and I purchased a 1600 lb trl . How much weight would you recommend adding ? And do I really need a tandem axle if I'm not planning to go over 3500 total pounds. We have decided on a 12 ft because we have two small and one 40 pound dog
You're not going to have a lot of power on the hills and against a headwind, but I see folks towing cargo trailers with their Jeeps all the time. Just try to keep your build as light as possible and leave the heavy stuff at home. We travel light anyhow ourselves. The biggest problem you're going to have isn't the weight anyhow, it's the wind resistance on the front of the trailer. We do our best to keep our speed at around 55mph whenever possible because going faster really hurts the mileage!
@Gonagain thank you for the advice . I won't be adding too much weight. And cutting to one axle would help with the weight by a few hundred pounds. I also plan on a v nose.
traveling thru ajo,az? not for me, traveling in and around prescott, or in the mtn . areas is the beauty of az,
once you travel to the mtn s . areas you ll never go back, to ajo, ? rick and linda are you into fishing? im planning on traveling thru your neighborhood great falls,mt i know your thinking WHY? WHY not, it would be an experience to watch the mountain people in action, ? i can hear the both of you now, tony look down the street and up the street thats the street? haha
Something wrong with the camera, or did you test out the invisibility feature?
Nah, no invisibility button on the camera. Oh, wait, it's there, I just can't see it! Thanks, Darryl, we're fixing it now.
Is it me or is something out of place? You buy a permit to walk in the area, yet there are phones and water for people who are in the same area illegally? Funny….I hope you both had a great adventure out there and thank you as always for sharing them!
EXACTLY!!!
No, it's not you. Thanks for watching, Cristobal.
@@gonagain you are welcome! Stay safe out there!
Time for some energy drinks.....There are thousands of Cabeza Petroglyphs and you didn't find "One" ???
They're all in the one location.
How often do you have to apply for the Golden age pass?
We have the lifetime senior pass which is now $80 according to their website.
That is for National Parks only?
Correct
Also I tried to send you some pics of my poor man's RV to your email address and it comes back as a bad address.
Would Rick's mating call be "pie"?
How'd you know?
Linda where is your walking stick ?
At home in the garage, :0( . We forgot them on this trip and I made one for an ocotillo branch.
Don't the helicopters patrol the boarder?
Hello Carolee, I don't think they're in heavy use for patrolling. Stay tuned for Sunday's video that shows the wall.
Could you have ridden your electric bike down that road /trail?
Yes, but parts of it would have been pretty technical and maybe beyond my level. I think the worst part you might have to get off and walk it. The bike would actually be a lot faster on the road going in.
If you have an iPhone, your Health app will show mileage.
Yucca is wet too
ever wonder "if" the history told by so claimed people of knowledge is same set up over jab that causes issues...or the insane weather
Where where are your hiking poles??! Everyone over 40 should use hiking poles ...especially on rough, steep, uneven Terrain. They make an amazing difference on your knees and ankles, and they make everything safer. I am 5ft tall, so I can use the kids poles which are lighter weight and cheaper
I wondered as well. Rick had one but not Linda?
@@3generations393 you need 2. One for each knee
Thank you for being concerned. We forgot out walking sticks on this trip and Rick made one from an ocotillo which turned out to be too heavy for my liking so I didn't want to use one.
