Jonathan, Adobo actually existed in the Philippines long before the Spanish arrived. It was only called adobo by the Spaniards from the word "adobar" which means "to marinate". It is a Filipino dish. Interestingly, the pre-colonial adobo did not include soy sauce, but just vinegar, salt, garlic, black pepper and bay leaves. 🙂
oooo so we got the word from the Spanish then, which might be the reason for the confusion .. and then maybe the addition of soy sauce.. .thanks for the clarification!
@@travelescapesOFFICIAL You're most welcome! The original adobo still exists today, called "Adobong Puti" (White adobo) or "Adobo sa Asin" (Adobo in salt). It is a drier version, and absolutely yummy! The addition of soy sauce is just a Chinese influence. 🙂
Adobo comes from the word "adobar" which means marinated.
Spanish colonizers carried the word “adobo” to the regions they conquered
In addition, the original base ingredients of Adobong Tagalog (native) or Adobong Puti (white) is Vinegar and Salt. Filipinos started using soy sauce after the Spañards came to the Philippines.
@@java1221-sv7bhyes only the word "adobar" which means Spanish word for "marinated" .. but before the Spanish colonial Filipinos already have our version of "marinated" for preservation using coconut vinegar and salt which is abundance in our country.
The Philippines is a true gem in the world with its breathtaking natural beauty. From its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters to lush tropical forests and stunning rice terraces, the country offers an incredible diversity of landscapes. What makes it truly exceptional is the warmth and hospitality of its people, who add to the beauty of this nation. The Philippines' charm lies not only in its stunning scenery but also in the rich culture and traditions that make it a truly unique and beautiful destination.
I completely agree!
oooh that is the sweetest and sincere appreciation I’ve read.
Thank you for you nice observation.
Philippines is a very poor and underdeveloped country. According to the world bank, 37% of the population still live in slums as of 2020. With a gdp per capita (PPP) of 11420 in 2023, which is only half of the world average of 22226, making it one of the poorest countries in the world.
Most people there are scammers or criminals. The crime rate is very high. The intentional homicide rate is at 6.46 per 100k population which is the highest in South East Asia. If you plan to visit South East Asia, Philippines is the place where the chances are the highest to be murdered.
The currency is weak and the minimum wage is only 300 USD. Foreigners from first world countries can fully take advantage of the weak currency. Also since filipinos are very poorly educated, there is abundance of this cheap labour all throughout the country.
The national dish of the Philippines is called "pagpag." It's made by refrying chicken bones that have been collected from the trash. Since the majority of the people in the Philippines live in slums and lack education, a lot of them have to find discarded bones in restaurants, refry them, and eat them.

Even with those strong winds, I could hear you and the people just fine Jonathan! No worries, keep 'em coming.
good to know! Thanks for the feedback!
Those dogs are so cute and precious 🤗 i am so glad you helped that sweet doggie, thank you 🤗
watching from san diego. the highlight of this video-- when Jonathan stopped the stray dogs fight and making sure the weakest dog didn't get attacked anymore by other stray dogs (thank you, Jonathan 🙏 ) so sad to see this huge problem of overpopulation of malnourished stray animals everywhere in the philippines.
You and the Filipino people. always lift my spirits when I'm down. Your vlog is the best.
Thank you so much for saying that! I love hearing that the videos can have a positive effect!!
Ate is like a tour guide when explaining salute. Travel safe Travel Escapes
Yeah! She did a great job explaining the process!
She speaks English well.
Boodle fight is so fun !You gotta eat with group of friends by hands. Glad you had fun. 😁❤️🇵🇭
Behalf of the OceanBowls and whole paliton beach community, we would like to thank you for visiting us and joining our "family" (community)... We're so happy you enjoyed it... And we hope to see you again. GOD BLESS.. AND take care.
oh hey thank you so much!! I love Siquijor and the beach family at Paliton! Honestly might be my favorite island in the Philippines!!
Thank you Jonathan, for protecting that poor dog against the gang. It hurts seeing that dog shivering.
As always, nice video. Best regards from your subscriber here in Germany. I'm in from the beginning when you uploaded your first video after you arrived in Manila. Enjoy Philippines! I hope you get to visit my home island Romblon, Romblon. Take care. 💜🌺
Where else can you get a cooking lesson, a language course, a beach and sunset, and a PUPPY! Awesome vid! Thanks Jonathan
haha very true! It was a thorough experience! Thank you for watching!
Great to see such a variety of foods, scrumptious looking and a great atmosphere. I was glad to hear the mention of being conscious of allergens from the amazing chef. As a person with celiac disease I'm researching all the different foods I can eat in the Philippines prior to my upcoming trip in March. Great video btw Jonathan, nobody worries about the wind when the food and scenery is a feast for the eyes
I actually typically choose to avoid foods you probably have to avoid, bread and grains/wheat, right? My favorite foods here are Kinilaw and any dish with coconut milk (called gata or ginataang) you should be able to eat those! Kinilaw is like ceviche and the ingredients in the Gata dishes vary, but shouldn’t have any wheat. Thanks for watching!
This is what I want to see not the flashy tall buildings in BGC, metro Manila which we have plenty in the West. This is exciting, a dynamic experience in the province a gem to watch.
Thank you for watching!! I’m glad you like this style!
RIGHT!!!! BGC is high end corporate city that integrates the way of life of many nationalities that works on their multinational company they work for. Its NOT basicaly a reflection of Filipino life and culture.
Exactly why we prefer provincial life. Close to nature, and simple life.
We were on siquijor last week
.my wife is Filipina and we live in north Carolina..been in the Philippines for a month and going back to the US today.
Wish I could have met you. I watch your videos at home a lot ..have a great time and be safe
oh too bad we didn't run into each other! Thank you so much for watching and have a good trip home!
Stumbled across one of your videos about a month ago. Started planning my move to the Philippines. Now I'm starting to second guess it. From other videos I've seen. Too many Americans seem to be there now. Which is what I want to escape.
Anyways if I do make it there I'd love to have a beer with you. Your videos are great and show the Philippines in a positive light.
Don't second guess yourself, just make the right choices and dive through the adventure...just got to have so me plan or someone trustworthy enough to help u from here.
Looking forward to watching!
Hope you enjoy! It might make you hungry though 😂
Woah. The community there is so wholesome. Are Filipinos typically multilingual? They are proficient in various languages, especially English and a bit of Spanish.
Yes, most Filipinos are multilingual. We speak @ least 3 languages: English, Tagalog/Filipino & the native dialect of our province.
Filipino sounds like Spanish since we were a colony of Spain for 333 years. I think about 40% of our language is Spanish.
you asked in the chat "is Bicol where gata comes from?"
no, gata is coconut milk and it comes from anywhere coconut grows. it's just that gata seems to be omnipresent in every meal in the Bicol region---they use it extensively
Tama ka, well said, halos everyday we would cook gu-lay, that is any vegetable or plant that is not commonly eaten in other locality, and we have a way of cooking it, there is palos-ag which is creamy and palana-lana which oily, the common folk in the Bicol Region are also experts when determining the age of a coconut nut, there is lukadon, laya etc.😊
Great food! Everything looks delicious
It was!
Just found your channel brother. It's great, super vids. I was in Davao back in 2017 beautiful city and the people like you say are the friendliest and happy. Went on a short boat trip to Samal Island and went to some waterfalls not to far from the port. Had 15 litlle Phillipino kids follow me around the whole day saying I was a big Cano. I'm an ex bodybuilder. It was so fun that week, came home happy. Peace my friend.✌😎
She's so creative!! I love the way decorate food❤❤❤❤
I love this. Siquijor is one of the island's that we wanted to visit last April when we were in Negroes Oriental. We could see it from the restaurant where we ate most of our stay. We did get to go to Apo Island, and Manjuyad Sand Bar. Beautiful places. Next time we visit our family, we will go to siquijor.
you definitely should visit Siquijor! No crowds or traffic... super chill island! and beautiful!
That's a lot of delicious food! Love it!
sooo much food! It disappeared quickly though! 😂
@travelescapesOFFICIAL hahahaa that good, huh? Seems mouth watering.
I definitely want to try that in Siquijor.
First time seeing a pancit boodle fight! and rice with it, haha! literal carbs on carbs.
😂 I think the rice may have been to spell the word “Siquijor”
I was waiting for this!
Thank you for that!!!
Oh yes, I love locally cooked food, especially on the fire. 👌💯
yeah!
First Comment 😍 we love you from Dubai po ...
Heyyy!! Thanks for watching over in Dubai!
🤗@@travelescapesOFFICIAL
my favorite island Siquijor.. People are kind and disciplined as just like the Japanese =)
I love Siquijor! Such a relaxed atmosphere!
Kamayan, also known as kinamot or kinamut in Visayan languages, is the traditional Filipino method of eating with the bare hands. It is also used to describe the Filipino communal feast where food is served on banana leaves and eaten without utensils.
A boodle fight is a meal that dispenses with cutlery and dishes. Diners instead practice kamayan. The food is placed on top of a long banana leaf-lined trestle table and in the true military practice, diners do not sit in chairs but instead stand shoulder to shoulder in a line on both sides of the table.
I’ve never experienced Boodle Fight. All looks delicious! Masarap! Watching from Canada😊❤️🇨🇦
I don’t know how that was my first one!
Nice Video Jonathan..
Actually we already have abodo before the spanish colonial and Filipino version ingredients are made of salt and vinegar for preservation.
And Dogs are territorial, so if the other dog came from other pack thay tend to attack the other dog.
Have a great day.. nice video indeed 🙂👌❤
Ook so you had the food before but then maybe just got the word from the Spanish? Yes, that dog probably wasn’t in his neighborhood.. thank you for watching again Jhie!
@@travelescapesOFFICIAL yes exactly 👌..
And you're very much welcome Jonathan and Thank's to you too 🤗
The Spanish though...👏👏👏 I am really impressed with multi-lingual people.

Cheers from Los Angeles.

Awesome boodle fight Jon! That shrimp look epic and delicious! Great experience thanks for sharing!😎🏝🏖
Thank you for watching!!
When the Spanish first explored the Philippines in the late 16th century, they encountered a cooking process that involved stewing with vinegar and they called it adobo, so the cooking was originally from Phils, only the Spanish named it. It is different from Spanish adobo (marinate}
Oook thank you for the explanation!
All my favorite foods was there. I will have to go there one day. Glad you got to enjoy!
So many good foods there! Thank you for watching! Are you on a different island in the Philippines?
No. Im in the USA. Can't wait to visit my mom's home country one day
Town fiesta 👍😀😀
Enjoy Siquijor and the food Jonathan.

Thank you for watching!!
@@travelescapesOFFICIAL wouldn't miss it for the world
Yummy food 🤤 hi Jonathan have a great day take care
Thank you for watching! Have a great day also!
Never participated in boodle fight. Looks interesting.
Jonathan, how are you doing Bud? Seems like you're enjoying the nature of the Philippines.👍 I understand that you speak some Spanish. So, maybe you should learn how to speak Bisaya. Bisaya dialect is mixed with Spanish a lot. So, I'm sure you won't have a difficult time to get the hang of it. Practica hablar bisaya de vez en cuando es la manera de aprender, Se? I'm a Filipino myself from Cebu for 20 yrs, now I'm almost retired here in SoCal. I learned my Spanish since from Highschool in Cebu. Now, I'm speaking it here mostly at work... Enjoy Philippines my friend, and thanks for sharing your vids 🇺🇲🇵🇭 Mabuhay!

@@travelescapesOFFICIAL Right on! 👍
i love u video
Thank you!!
Nice kaayo
How bad could the wind be? You don't have a single hair out of place! 😂
Watched this yesterday. Glad you enjoyed your first Boodle Fight... About Adobo, i'm not so sure that it really did originate in Spain. (Maybe just the name.) Coz i watched a video before where a local food expert cooked and explained about Adobo (check out: Pre-Colonial Adobo This Adobo Is Cooked in Lard and It's the Best), and i've also read an article on it. It's actually been around even before Spanish times. But they used salt at the time and not soy sauce.
Poor dog. Maybe he or she isn't from there and the others are just being territorial. But thanks for always minding them. Unfortunately, there are so many strays here as there are hardly any government spaying/neutering programs, esp. in the provinces.
Hi Moondust! Thank you for watching and the clarification on the adobo! true, the stray animals is a common issue here, unfortunately. These dogs were all nice to people though
It is indeed the ultimate food wrestling match where the only rule is 'eat first, ask questions later!' As somebody who visited and experienced this, this is something I would miss. Hopefully, I could come back with the help of my travel dart!
Wow enjoy the island and the fiesta in Siquijor is October 3 and 4. Waiting for more videos
Plenty more videos to come! Thanks for watching!
Masarap 🦞🐠🦀🐟🦐🤤😋
delicious boodle fight
Wow proud to be Siquijodnon
I love your island!! 😂 it's so relaxed and beautiful! I love how the road in San Juan runs next to the ocean, so many great sunsets, delicious food all around.. it's definitely one of my favorite islands in the country!
@@travelescapesOFFICIAL Thank you for coming my home land
Wow that's a nice video again I really enjoyed it ..and I'll Google the word boodle and I'm surprised that It is a old Dutch word 😂 I'm looking forward too see the next video... Greetings from the Netherlands
Hey! Thanks for saying that! I didn’t know the word Boodle derived from a Dutch word.. I like learning things like that though. Thank you for watching from the Netherlands!
The word adobo may have derived from Spain adobar meaning marinade but the ingredients of Chicken Adobo belongs to Filipinos. So it is Filipino National Dish. It is how we marinade our chicken. Period.
Yummy foods🤩
Hahahaha trying sugar and salt 😂
🤣 that’s the best part of the video! 😂
oH this is so much fun esp wd Filipino food using ur hands ..
nice one! watching from negros occidental.. 🤗
Wow!!! Bro!!!! We made us so starving here in usa!!!😢
😅 sorry about that!
Goooood you vlog and interact with people alone now. Its much pleasant in Filipino culture's eyes , though we know the reality . By the way vlogging alone is different from travelling w/ companion . They can co-exists but not shown simultaneously.
When i visit Siquijor , ill try to look gor Teresa , she seemingly a good cook.
What is the reality?
Great vid , would of been even better if you had Ann with you since she's a good cook and probably would enjoyed it . just saying!!
Boodle fight is from the military long day of marching and without utensils to carry. Banana leaves are the most practical way to use specially in the jungle. By the way been quite sometimes there was no video Jonathan. Anyway glad you’re back. 👍😊 bon a petit 😊
Wow Brother I envy you.😂 The Queen is so Talented with her cooking.😅 I'll pray for her success. I wish you success with your channel And god's blessings and both of your lives❤❤❤
