Best outboard painting video I've watched. Will definitely be referring back to this numerous times in the future.
Good job, looks like it came from the factory.
I have made this list of how to paint your cowling.
Step 1► Sticker/Decal Removal
Step 2► Sand, Wipe
Step 3►Apply Tape
Step 4► Prime, Sand, Wipe
Step 5► Prime, Sand, Wipe
Step 7► Paint, Sand, Wipe
Step 6► Paint, Sand, Wipe
Step 8► Clear Coat
Step 9>Clear Coat
Step 10 Apply Decals with soapy water after 24 hours
Excellent video. Nicely produced... Thanks!
Awesome video, great instruction….👍
That was awesome. Good clear instructions and the end result looks great.
Just did mine using these steps and materials turned out great
That's awesome to hear!
Relay enjoyed the video, will be trying it on my project. Thanks
Great video! Very well done. This gave me confidence to tackle my 60 hp Big foot
Awesome! 100% doable yourself.
Perfect job. Only thing I do differently is wet my shop floor down do pull dust down
Killer work buddy 👍👍👍..
I figured out the problem. Even though I wiped the pieces with a dry towel and tack cloth after I wiped them with a damp cloth, I think there was still some residual moisture on them. I sanded them down and this time set them aside for a while to dry. The clear coat went on without any issues. The clear coat seems to be much more sensitive to moisture on the surfaces than the prime and color coats. Fortunately this issue happened on a couple small pieces which I did first just in case there was a problem. Thanks for your video and help. I refinished twin 250 Verados and they came out great.
Awesome video. Thanks so much
Great video ,Thanks.
Great video, thanks!
Great great job!
work of art. congrats
Haha I wouldn't say that... But I appreciate you!
Nice job
Fantastic job!
Thank you very much!
Outstanding content... well done.
I have a mercury force 75 hp that i will be doing this summer after watching this ....
Awesome! Happy to hear you're tackling the project.
I put the 2 part clear in my fridge after activating, between uses and it lasts a lot longer before it’s dead.
Great video, very informative and easy to follow. I do have a question though, after wet sanding down my last base coat with fine wool (I am using the same phantom black paint and 0000 fine wool as you) I can see very fine scratches from the sanding when the cowling has dried. When the cowling is wet, the scratches are barely visible and negligible. Did you have the same thing happen? If not, do you think I should reapply another base, and just apply the clear while it's still tacky?
Great video abd very helpful. I'm currently prepping a bay kit to paint for a Yamaha and was wondering how long you wait before applying the clear coat? Do you let the colored paint fully dry first or apply it when colored paint is still wet?
Dude this is a great confidence builder, I have always shot paint out of a gun, but I am going to try this. I moved and don't have the chop I did before nor the tools, but I'm going To give it a whirl. Thank you so much...I was a novice painter anyways, not a pro, lol...
I'm definitely not a pro either. Just take your time and it will come out well. Glad it helped!
Absolutely great video.
Do you know what color the white is that Honda started using. I want to go white from oyster silver. I’m having a hard time finding the white paint code.
Sorry, Sean. I have no clue what the white Honda paint is.
Can this paint and process apply to the rest of the outboard?
Hey Catain Planer I really enjoy your video s ,what steps would I have to go through to get my fresh water Captains license , take care thanks for your videos 👍.
I recommend going to sea school. They'll go through all of the steps to get your license and all of the paperwork and testing you'll need to do.
Off-topic question: Would you be able to do an updated video on the KastKing BlackHawk II telescopic rod? It has been updated since you reviewed it years ago and I am interested to know what you think of it.
I'll try to. It's still going strong. I don't use it as much as I use to since I've been focusing on the guide business.
So is it 2 coats of primer or 3? Awesome video by the way. I'm going to paint my outboard motor tomorrow. Kind of nervous lol😂
Two coats of primier. Two coats paint. Two coats clear.
Hi, I spray painted my Suzuki df50 and the paint cracked, which I did wrong.
Can you tell me what I did wrong?
Thanks
Paulo Rocha
Thanks for the great video. I am doing this on an Optimax 135. How many spray cans of the black did you need as I have to order them online?
For the cowl and chaps, I used 4 cans of black. 2 per coat. For the remainder of the motor I ended up using 3 more cans.
Thank you! What is the brand you used for the spray can attachment?
@flowbass Hi. i've found this video a little late. Quick question. I have an old Honda Outboard and when I was sanding it I noticed I did take it down to the fibergass in some areas. What's your best reccomendation to restore that part?
As long as its smooth, you should be able to cover it with primer and it will be fine. You may want to add two extra layers just for additional protection. If its not smooth, you'll need to use body filler first, sand it down smooth, then primer.
Hi, what flashlight is that?
Did your process change any when doing the rest of the motor? I have the exact same motor that needs the same attention
No, process stays the same.
Would you suggest maybe 000 steel wool between clear coats?
Nooooo….no steel wool at all. It can leave residue embedded in the paint/clear. Residue that’ll show up bigger each coat of clear.
The Mercury Paint instructions says dry to the touch in 20 minutes. They say to apply the second coat either before one hour or after 24 hours (full cure time). How long did you wait to wet sand after you applied each coat?
I wet sanded roughly an hour after each coat. They say to apply the second coat before an hour as if you're not wet sanding. The paint is dry to the touch, but not cured so both coats will bond. When you wet sand and create those micro abrasions and more surface area, it doesn't matter how long you wait, as long as the paint isn't wet. This is the process I took. Many ways to go about it and get great results like I did.
HELP! I let the second color coat dry overnight then wet sanded with very fine steel wool. I wiped off the pieces and wiped them with a tack cloth. I applied the clear coat. When I went back in an hour to check on them, the clear coat had shriveled up and cracked in places. Any suggestions?
I'm sorry to hear that, Ed. Very difficult to diagnose over the internet. My best guestimate is you sprayed the clear coat on too thick, or possibly the clear wasn't mixed well enough. If you used the clear in my video it has a hardener you have to release and mix for a solid two minutes before spraying. It also might be too humid when you sprayed it. Just guessing.
The haze is caused by high humidity. Nice job though.
Anybody watching this, please do not sand before clear coat. Depending on the type of paint you are using it will wrinkle if it’s an enamel you CAN NOT sand a respray. Get the shape and imperfections out before you spray your base coat. After you spray base coat wait 30 minutes then clear. You’re welcome.
Pretty sure you should apply the clear while the 2nd coat of colour coat is still slightly tacky.
With cheap clear, yes that is correct. But not with high quality clear that has a hardener, such as what I used in this video.
Skip the acetone and use water and let it air dry
USE THE TACK CLOTH BEFORE PRIMING and every time you sand..sand with 800 or 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, NOT the steel wool.
MOST IMPORTANTLY....SPRAY IN AN AREA WITH GOOD LIGHTING...if you spray like he did in low lighting, it will turn out like crap like his did and not a smooth glass finish...good lighting will show your imperfections that need to be addressed and not spend all that money to say "I'm ok with it" or just to cover it up with a decal. A high quality gloss should look like a high quality finish, not like a gloss that looks like he used a 97 cent can of spray!
Use 400 wet sand after primer after black paint use 800 then respray.. reason for orange peel is to heavy on paint try lighter coats and you should tag cloth before every coat 😊
All that prep and sanding and it still turned out like shit in the light of pain wise. All I ever hazy asf.
Using that acetone on primer is no bueno for me
Stock mercury decals aren’t even perfectly centered lol 😂
