Rare footage of someone who actually understands dogs and is not just a self proclaimed dog lover. Great job.
If your dog never sees other people it doesn't matter, i guess if you take your dog to dinner parties or have your own dinner parties this is necessary.
@@pokemonfan2630 isolation is abuse. Yikes.
Dog Whisperer/Caesar Milan I think is his real name. Exactly the same technique.
They both do the literal exact same thing cause they are basing their experiences off of Dog Psychology.

I'm a professional dog trainer from New Hampshire U.S.A. This is great advice and what I also suggest for my clients. I sometimes either show them a video of a mom dog disciplining her puppies, or ask them to watch a video when they have time to do so. Thank you for your videos, Will. They are great!
Can you please do a video paula mears it would mean alot

I did that to my Belgian malinois and he came back even harder 😂
@@Joserambo9940 Sometimes that can happen. It could be that you were using the wrong energy, or that a different method was needed. There are several methods to stop puppy biting.
@@Joserambo9940I have a Mal/GS mix and, yeah, he loves a good fight, comes back even harder. You said it right.
Omg!! I’ve just done this with my puppy and it worked! I tried the active method and low and behold she gets it! Took 3 attempts within about a minute and now she’s stopped nipping and biting during playtime. Later in the day we played again and she forgot herself a couple of times but just the noise was enough to remind her not to bite! You absolute legend!!! Thank you for this great tip! ... now on to perfecting the crate training!
Yesterday my nine week old puppy (2 whole pounds!) was making mincemeat of my fingers as I yelped and made my hand go limp. More and more and more nipping. This morning I looked for this video, now that the reality of new puppy has set in at the one week mark, watched several times, had my husband watch it and we both practiced hissing like a couple of idiots. He coaxed me on improving my hissing, we changed our approach-and I’ve had a total of three isolated nips. THANK YOU!!! You are brilliant.
I had to watch this video twice, I was too busy looking at how cute those puppies are to absorb it
Do you know what breed it is?

I have been using thisas a handy reference book czcams.com/users/postUgkxGQVgV21bQ7B9b9duQ1ByImyT9xHbjOKq . I read through the book and enjoyed the little glimpses of examples. I love that this author believes in rescue dogs. The tips and training has been invaluable and gave me moments of.... "how simple why didn't i think of it" so it's been a great tool. Thank you!
Last night I was so upset with my new 9 week old miniature dachshund because his puppy biting was out of control, he was launching himself at me and I was bitten again and again. I searched CZcams to see if I could find a solution and wow how fantastic Will’s training advice was, it worked and this morning after two attempts to bite hard my boy is a different puppy. I now have an adorable playful puppy and haven’t received any further bites. Can’t thank Will enough and I will certainly be checking out his other training advice and tips 😊
It’s only been a day but so far this is really working with my 9 week old golden retriever puppy. Thank you!
Also recognizing that they are teething and need to chew. Additionally they communicate with their teeth so being patient and compassionate is key. Thanks for sharing a Loving video and encouraging play.❤
Additionally if you are looking for an awesome puppy we have a few amazing ones in Northern California.
Just brought home a mini bernedoodle at 8 weeks old. He must have thought i was one of his litter mates😅 as he was continually biting me. Tried all kinds of corrections, but this one did the trick!🎉 I'm not sure about the psychology of this, but it worked within 15 minutes. Thank you and my body parts, thank you😊
I was doing the squealing method with my 10 week old aussie and it wasnt working. Now that i know about active correction i can see him really understanding that biting humans is not okay and will go running to his toys. that correct, redirect, reinforce was very helpful thank you Will!
Did it work with your aussie?
We're right here with our 9wk Aussie. She's responded much more positively to this approach than the yips
Brandon mcmillan is the most gentle, thorough and effective dog i've ever encountered. My friend and i love the dog show and never miss it. So many times we've shed a tear of happiness just seeing a dog's life changed forever when proper training is applied and they go on to live their lives the way they should. I have brandon's book czcams.com/users/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq in two formats. Not only the paperback version but also the kindle version to refer to when i don't have the paperback along with me. I have used his methods with my cavalier kc spaniel and turned a non-disciplined furbaby into a companion who has traveled thousands of miles with us across the country. He is a near perfect dog thanks to brandon's methods. I don't get one cent of kickback for recommending brandon but i do it because i love dogs. They deserve to be given a chance. Brandon's mission in life - to rescue dogs and place them in a forever, happy home - is very dear to my heart. I recommend his methods to anyone who has a dog - young or old. I've seen him take even old dogs and teach them. Brandon was an animal trainer before his current mission. His parents were animal trainers. His methods are the best i've ever found. Your furbaby will thank you for spending the money on this book. Don't hesitate - it is worth every cent.
This is exactly how I feel and the ways that I have been working with my new puppy . I feel so amazing that Iv been doing the correct actions and not been making the process worse. Thank you for helping so many animals and sharing the video
This has been the best and most informative video I've seen to help with puppy biting! I've watched several videos so far and yours has been the best at helping us! We just got a 9 week old golden retriever puppy. Thank you for this video!!!
I have tried this , which did not work, also tried tapping his nose sharply, he interoperates this as a challenge and snaps even more viscously at me very often drawing blood from my fingers, or face. He is a 10 week Border Collie, and apart from the biting, he is a perfect dog, and I am determined to master him, which is what brought me to this video. Thanks for sharing.
Your method is way better than those passive ways..I didn’t had to courage before but after seeing ur methods I’m confident now
This worked very well after one week of puppy bites from our 8 week old GSD. Now I just make the ‘sound’ of active correction and she instantly stops. I realized that our cats have made a similar sound of warning to the puppy this whole week to train her to stay a few feet back from them. Humans also have a learning curve! 😂
Excellent video! At least I think so. I'm going to try it out. We are taking a puppy training course right now, and so far our puppy is responding very well, but it focuses entirely on "ignore and reward". That seems to work for anything we want to encourage, like retrieval or sitting or even obstacles, but doesn't seem to work great for stopping unwanted behavior. Whereas the older dog is not afraid to use corrections, and so far seems to be doing a better job training the puppy than we are. But he trains the puppy to his own ends, not necessarily ours.
You are saving my life 😭 my 3 month old has given me decorative teeth marks since I got her despite me trying the “close the mouth” or “press on their tongue” methods. Literally half a second after doing this she stopped biting, which she never does, so thank you!
My 8 week old has one heck of a bite haha. Definitely trying this.
This man is 100% SPOT ON!
Got our border collie x lab puppy yesterday. She is 10 weeks old and just found these videos! Really hoping we can get a lot out of these! Very excited to train my little lady ❤️
What do you do if the puppy thinks the correction is a fun game and can’t seem to be redirected to a toy?
Your method was so good. I have a bichon frise and was able to significantly reduce the biting. Thank you!!
Yeah, tapping my puppy will make her think it’s a game and become more excited. I tried the yelling no with a loud sound that shocks her, and ignore her right after by looking away but staying in her area and it personally worked in terms of her not biting my feet.
Hi I tried it,it fired her right up,bites so hard, love her she has a lovely personality when she's calm
I did ALL this and it's amazingly working, I achieved success. Now my son eat it's veggies. Thank you Cesar. 😊
I bite him back
I did it too 😅
Same here 😅
Yep me to
lol with your mouth? or hand? and does it work? I am not sure if I understood it right.
bite their ear it usually works if anything else doesn’t. But it has to be soon as they bite. Use your mouth. If you don’t wanna put your mouth on your dog then you haven’t bonded enough. Trust me. My 10 week old GSD bites hard I use his correction prong collar or bite his ear and he stops but you have to follow up each time to reinforce it.
I’ve been doing this with my puppy for a while. She simply refuses to listen. Everything else, she’s incredibly eager to please. She’s learned to come, sit, shake with her right paw, shake with her left paw, give kisses, lay down, and fetch up her toys. She’s a beagle, boxer, malamute, husky, and 10% wolf. She’s the first female dog I’ve ever owned and she’s the most incredibly stubborn dog I’ve ever known. I love her tremendously and she’s excellent when it comes to everything but biting! What should I do? I’ve consistently corrected, reinforced, redirected and I always praise her when she’s doing something right. Please help. Any tips will be very helpful and very much appreciated. 🙏
Thank you!! So many trainers are using collars to redirect this attention, which is fine for most breeds, but some puppy breeds have delicate tracheas, and a collar pull is dangerous.
Tried thjs yesterday and today morning, had the problem that my 11 week old cavapoo thought that the correction was just more play... or just got annoyed by it!
Today in the afternoon tried clapping once strongly when she bit and that succeeded in startling her.
Gave her toys to chew, and we did the whole thing 3 or 4 times more.
By the time I walked away, she walked after me and a couple of times came close to nipping my ankles but didn't. When I stopped, she lied down and chopped at my toes, nose touched them but didn't bite. So I think I'll stick to clapping for startling, the rest seems to be applicable from this technique.
I tried this on my two-month pom, and it worked wonders. Thank you so much!! ❤
My understanding is the reason to do the 'whimper' and/or turn your back approach isn't to stop puppy biting altogether, but to train the puppy to develop a "soft-mouth". If you discourage the mouthing behavior entirely, an adult dog will not have learned to mouth gently when it does instinctively bite in response to some sort of startle, which poses a huge risk.
I'd really like to hear people's take on this approach within that context, because although this no doubt looks effective I am confused.
My method taught to me over 60 years ago by an shepherd is that I don't ignore biting, but act like an adult dog, don't react & move out of reach. So rewarding unacceptable behaviour with nothing, if a behaviour is unrewarding it will stop.
You are EXACTLY right. You can see this behavior in well trained dogs they will mouth as gentle as shaking hands. This is also why trainers say puppies should stay with the mom and other puppies because they learn bite control from litter mates and mom. If a human teaches bite control properly then the chance of the dog actually hurting someone is very low but like this “internet famous” trainer is teaching techniques that he claims “work” but in reality leave much to be desired.
No. They will “soft mouth” just fine with disciplined corrections later in life. The “never actually correct” stuff from the pure positive wackos is not beneficial in the long term.
The active technique is very effective and has stopped the biting of a 12-week-old labrador almost in its tracks. It is not painful but a correction that the puppy seems to instinctively understand. I have had dogs for many years and only wish I had this information earlier. Will talks through the problem and explains the techniques clearly. A really useful video.
I was at my absolute wits end yesterday with my Parson Russell Terrior puppy who was biting, snapping and being generally unruly. I really thought I had made a mistake getting her .
After watching your vids about biting, walking on a leash, sit and down, I have a completely different pup today. Thank you so much for making this available in such an easy way to understand.

Your methods for how to stop pulling and walk with a loose lead worked miricales for my 4MO Amstaff! Just purchased your puppy book and we are trying to work on bitting now. We adopted him just 1 week ago and the progress with the advice in your videos is amazing! We've had our rescue pup for a few weeks & nothing was working - any time I'd try to pet him he'd bite (playfully, but it still hurt!) - i tried this today & he literally hasn't bitten me the rest of the day. I still have marks on my hand from his bites this morning! I'm truly amazed!
Couldn't get our 4 month old puppy to stop bitting. Watched your short video and practiced it. Thank you so much!! What a relief.
I have a question. Is it a big breed? Mine hang on my pants and lift him up
So so glad there are canine trainers like yourself. Bless you and thank you
Thanks Will. Day 3 of owning an 8 week old Cavalier King Charles. Your vids are helping us get through and train him.
I've got a 7 week old cavalier king and just started working with her for this behavior
My golden is nearly adult size, and what stopped her from chomping our hands was when I yelled in pain, put her own paw in her mouth, and closed her jaws into it. She yelped, and it never happened again. 💛🐾
I taught my black lab mix to walk off leash using an Ice cream sandwich. She is a very food driven dog. I walked with the sandwich in my hand on a hot summer day and it caught her full attention. She completely focused on my hand for when a drip would come off. When I stopped, as soon as she sat down she got a couple of full licks. We passed squirrels, other dogs, and a few cats and she never once got a step behind. The second walk was without a sandwich, but praise when she stayed with me and stopped and sat when I stopped. Third walk was the same and then the fourth walk I did another Ice cream sandwich.
Black labs are such sweet dogs. You'll have the best friend you can imagine for life.

@Ecol Cre not easy to do when we both work been training the best we can with the time we have
@Ecol Cre that’s not necessarily true, their entire puppy stage is a learning experience and a lot of puppies don’t stop teething later on in their puppy years. It takes time
Just tried this on my puppy that was hurting my hand and instantly it worked like magic! Thank you!

Love the content!!! I have a 12 week chocolate lab and I hope this can be addressed we don’t want her to nip at us or our faces!
What happens if the puppy thinks the correction is a game and just keeps biting and playing?
Use more force up to the point they get it. The more aggressive the dog the more force you use. a little bite now both improve your life, and his. A socialized dog is a happy dog. Children hate being treated as the bad one.
Oml this is such a useful video, i wish i didnt wait until my labradoodle was already in it’s teen phase to watch this. He’s a bit too big for a twelve year old like me to do the active corrections. I’ll try my best, we’re a big household of 8 people, and yet only me and my mum do anything to take care of the big dog that all 6 of the children begged for.
Great advice!! I just got a retriever pup who started nibbling, this seems to work!
Can you do a video about how to go about changing rules if the need arises? Obviously consistency is so important for a dog but sometimes commands need to be changed (in our case we accidentally taught the same command for 2 different actions, so we needed to work to change one of them), or rules need to change (i.e. we moved and no longer have a fenced backyard so we had to change some of the outdoor rules for safety reasons), or other things that require changes to the existing rules. What's the best way to go about changing rules when it's necessary?
OMG! THIS IS AWESOME! That is exactly the way we trained GREAT DANE puppies when I was a kid. My parents owned an AKC registered Kennel. Raising and obedience training them for what used to be legitimate dog shows. In the old days if a dog even looked to the side it was eliminated. They had to focus and respond to its owner's commands and not let the surroundings distract them. It was a mutual respect between pet and owner! We did NOT give them treats as bribes but praise and love for showing the correct behavior. You show that a "reprimand" does not have to be a punishment! Dogs are smart, they will eventually learn that its owner will bribe them to be good and act up to receive the bribe! Much like children will. I was in Church one day as a single parent of 5 children. My children sat and listened to the Preacher as he was speaking. The two parents behind me, were giving their one child candy to get him to stay quiet and sit still. The father said "your children are so well behaved" and asked very quietly what I do as a parent to keep my children from acting up. I said "well, I don't give them candy for acting up as a bribe to get them to be good. I reward them with love and praise and respect them for doing so!" But they, the parents, continued their behavior, and as soon as the piece of candy was gone, their child would act up again to get another piece of candy! Instincts are similar in the teaching process of every "thinking" creature. Well done sir! And you are right, the behavior WILL continue in later life if many of the other teaching methods are followed! GREAT ADVICE!
Love the gentle correction technique ... whacks on the snoot or rear are uncalled for and ineffective. Nicely done.
Doesn’t always work, I do that same thing and they don’t let go
I use a similar technique except I move the dog by the scruff of his neck. Place him a short distance away from me and ignore him. When he comes back and plays without biting he gets fuss and positive reinforcement. Rinse and repeat I coaxed an 8 week old Bassett Hound pup out of his biting habit in 2 days. I also use a toy for chewing and that works wonders. Patience is key with any breed in my opinion, don’t give up just because the dog doesn’t immediately respond.
Remember you’re the pack leader not him/her.
I just got a 3 year old dog 4 days ago that likes to chew on my hands when we play. Im gonna give this a try and hope it works on adult dogs as well. So far i have been doing the correction part so now im gonna implement one of her toys as a redirection. Before this dog i had an American bulldog for 11 years and i have been watching other peoples dogs for a long time. But if there is one thing i have learned when it comes to dogs it is there is always a new challenge around the corner.
This technique didn't work for me but thanks for the post. Instead while we played I had my puppy on the lead so I could control him when he nipped me. As soon as he nips I rained in his lead and took away his toy. He immediately understood that I didn't like the nip. Once he showed me he was calm and in a nice sit for about 10 seconds I reintroduced the toy as the reward. The nipping does happen sometimes but its a lot less after 3 days of doing this
Hello Sam how are you doing today
Any advice for when the dog starts ignoring the corrective action? She’s 10 weeks and initially the correction, distraction and praised worked. But after the 3rd or 4th time using it, she started ignoring it. And eventually getting mad and growling at me. I’ve trained all sorts of dogs but all older “problem” dogs that don’t mouth hands. I’m not sure what to do. She’s a black lab
Exactly what happened with us. This method made her bite even more viciously and even start barking, which she wasn't doing previously.

Hello Gail how are you doing today
Thank you so much it’s been a long road losing people I care about and I just got myself a nine week mini golden doodle I’m doing the best I can and she is wonderful but I don’t want her to bite people and risk having an incident. Thank you so much for the steps.
Worked almost immediately for my puppy! Thank you my friend! 🙏🏻😎👍🏻
Nothing works for my puppy. He only bites harder. He avoids the distraction or toy and goes right back to biting me or my girlfriend. He bites harder everyday and genuinely seems aggressive towards people. Nothing has changed his behavior. He’s almost 5 months old and has only gotten worse, even with training. No clue what to do anymore.
Why are we giving them a toy or reward if they are biting?
Active corrections just further excite my 14 week old Cockalier. She just turns around and goes for my hand (I’m sure I’m doing it wrong). I do a lot of praise when she does go for an appropriate thing to chew on like you showed. Not sure what else to do to get her to understand that biting people is not an option.
My puppy just gets overly excited and won’t even consider a toy when she is intent on biting me
I’m having the same issue. Mi e gets mad when we correct her and lunges at us. We love her dearly, but she’s stressing us out now.
I am in the same boat with my 10 week old mini poodle, she just thinks it’s part of the game
@@nateindorf6285puppies are tougher than you think you must correct very firmly to the point they yelp or they will think it is tough playing
My dog is 8 months old and the same thing. He is a yorkie poo, high energy. I'm a teacher and I swear this dog has a low attention span and is hyper active. He ignores the toys, and goes straight for my hands. Someone told me dogs hate lemon. I put lemon and my hands and he liked it... we use treats to keep him calm on the couch and it works up until the point you stop giving him treats and then it's back to biting. He also started lunging at as when we sit. So we would put him in the play pen or tie him for a while until he calms down. As soon as we release him it's back to the biting. We scheduled some training classes and hope it helps. But none of the redirecting, praising, or yelping, even shows of dominance have helped. He thinks we are always playing.
This technique worked for me...for exactly one day. He was taken aback at first when he realized I knew "the Mama sound" (and I did give him something else to chew on immediately after) then he started ignoring it.
That sounds great . Thanks for sharing . I hope our 13 weeks old GR thinks the same . Greetings from 🇳🇴

Just curious, my wife likes to bite me from time to time. Would your technique work on her as well? 😂. Thanks for your videos, they are outstanding. 🇨🇦👍
The 'positive only' approach is so crazy. Teaching people to submit to their pets! Who in their right mind would consider that a smart thing to do?
I'm expecting new puppies from my dog. So, i need to learn too many things to properly training or raising them. Because their mother was never trained before. But she is a good girl whom understood us, and often taken care of farm at her own will which impressed me too.
Using this method really stopped my dog from biting.
Wow you are amazing. I always say people should doa course before they can have a puppy
Man, I’ve gone through so many videos and cuts, because 99% of the tuts for this say time out and Yelp. I’m gonna try this.
My 11 month-old still mouths when excited - thankfully only with family (including my brother's gf).
He does often pick up a toy to stop himself though.
Yeah, tried this on a border collie puppy and she just got angry and growled and showed her teeth, when I tried to correct her reactions she just got more angry and lashed out. Any suggestions?
We have a 10-week-old border collie now, and we’re basically seeing the same thing. I can give the correction and it’s effective sometimes, but other times it seems to make her more aggressive. It hasn’t worked at all for my wife. Sometimes we have to lure her into her crate with some treats so she resets if we can’t redirect her with a toy. It’s especially bad just before bed time.
I think squeling has its advantage if the dog considers it to be aversive enough. Sometimes a loud noise is all it take. However, I do believe you have to follow up and redirect the puppy with a toy or something else it can chew on.
Iove your video… the black puppy is exactly like mine!!! And your method worked!!!! Thank you❤️🙏🏽
Thanks this such a good training video. My puppy has a bite problem
