Cost to Insulate a School Bus With Closed Cell Spray Foam * Skoolie Conversion* Gus The Struggle Bus

- In this video, we will be showing you the reasons why we decided to go with spray insulation vs Rockwool, sheep wool, or fiberglass.
Here are a couple of things that you ought to know:
-DIY spray kits will reflect the area covered in 1 sqft board. 1 sqft board is equal to a 1 ft by 1 ft by 1in Volume
The deciding factors in our decision were Cost, Quality, Time, Peace of Mind
Dimensions:
Length - 40 ft
Width - 8 ft
Wall Height - 3 ft
Wall Length - 35 ft
This is how we calculated:
40x8 = 320 sqft
35x3 = 105 x both sides = 210 sqft
Not Counting filling in the wheel wells or the front and back curved areas it totals 530 sqft board
*This would require at least 1 spray foam kit from most companies
We wanted the insulation to be as close to the firing strips as possible.
1.5 inches in the ceiling
2.5 inches in the walls
To calculate this get your figures from above and multiply it accordingly
320 x 1.5 = 480 sqft
210 x 2.5 = 525 sqft
Total 1005 sqft board
* This would most require 2 spray foam kits from most companies
Because each Kit can range Between $700-$800 the DIY project would come out to be at least $1400-$1600.
The deciding factors in our decision were-
-Cost - We had a strict budget of $2,000.The company quoted us $1,800. For us, the $200 was paying for the Quality, Time, and Peace of Mind Factors.
-Quality - We wanted the best-proven material for insulation and according to our research Closed Cell Spray insulation was it. When choosing an insulation company we wanted to make sure that the company was reputable and had good, if not great reviews.
-Time - Having this outsourced guaranteed that it would get done promptly, much quicker than if we would have done it.
-Peace of Mind - There are a lot of things that contribute to this: Reviews, professionality, had done a school bus before, experience, etc, etc, etc.
We hope that this clears it up a little.

So glade came across your video as we will be looking for a company in the Houston area this fall when we get to that phase of our bus. So now we know of at least one company that knows what they are doing.
The more and more I watch I come to the realization I want a smaller bus lol great job guys looks great now I can't wait to see what you do on the inside!
Hahah I guess that its a good thing! Now you know what you don't want lol
You guys are amazing are about the only conversion that really post from start to finish. Really appreciate your dedication
Thank you so much and it makes us so happy that they have been helpful 😁
This helps tremendously. We just got our bus and I’m so happy to have found your channel. Thank you! We are also from Houston 😎
Thank you so much! It means a lot to us reading comments like yours. 😁
Congrats! Spray foam day was super exciting for us as well! Felt like a huge milestone! Keep up the good work. We are doing boring plumbing work now.
Thank you! It is so exciting we can not believe it!! Aw man that may not be exciting but at least you're doing an important step! Having running water will be super exciting!
SMART LETTING THE PRO DOING IT
Thank you
I think you made a Great choice
The amount of insulation and all the hard work and THE PRICE .BEST choice 👍👍👍😁
I think so too!! Thank you, we are really happy with it!
There’s a similar tool at Tractor Supply that works great too
Love everything about this... Meredith your energy and excitement is amazing! You remind me of my younger self, Cant wait to start my skoolie later this year!!! Always have fun with it!
Aw thank you so much! Good luck on your skoolie build!! It's a lot of work but you got this.
It's cool you've decided to build a schoolie, the wife and I just retired
As over the road truck drivers. We own our truck and trailer. We could sale it and buy a 5th wheel or we could build our reefer trailer into a rv. It's already insulated and best of all its payed for. OK will be watching.
That is a great idea, I think those would be worth exploring for sure!
Your choices for soundtracks on all your videos are the best
Thank you so much! We can not always find great stuff but we loved this one!
Y'all give great little tidbits of info. The curry comb thing is an excellent tip! I'm gonna be doing this in just a couple of months 🤞
Our pleasure! A guy with the company told us that and we are so glad he did!
My girlfriend and I are a bit out from that stage but this information helps a lot! Thanks
Absolutely! Glad we could help 😊
Apart from the obvious insulation/moisture barrier effects closed cell SF also has damn good sound deadening at just 2”. 😅
It has been working well so far!!
Congrats! Another huge step! So happy for you!
Thank you so much!!
Every time I see someone do the spray foam insulation I think to myself that must be what it feels like to be inside of a twinkie.
You, sir, have just won first place prize for the best comment ever! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love this song!! ❤
Right! So fun!
Super informative post, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
The curry comb tip is worth the watch. Thank you. 👍🏻
It really did help so much!!
Its12:24am and my third attempt, and now successful watching of great videos from you two.
Oh no I'm sorry it took so many tries! But thank you for watching and we are glad you like it!
Loved the video...you guys are awesome!... thinking of converting a small bus soon, and needed to know this thank you for all of your youthful energy...stay sweet !
I am so glad it helped! you got this!!
I like how you are double insulating your bus 🚌!
Thank you!
Use a curry come for horse to take foam down or a belt sander. Both work great
Great Idea!
Spray foam is the ultimate, and I doubt you will ever regret doing it right first time
I'm so glad you say that! We are really happy about it!
Definitely! I always urge people to pay more and get it done right versus the DIY packs that are low yield trash.
The music you use hell i need all these songs in a play list yoo yes
Haha thank you!
For scraping foam high spots down. maybe try a surform or a really rough 36 grit sandpaper wrapped on a block of wood. but it looked like you got it knocked down pretty good with your methods too. Also love the soundtrack especially the remix of Melanie "Brand new key"!
Yeah, we thought about that but we did not have any dust mask and didn't feel it was safe to do without them! The curry comb actually worked out really well! Thank you those songs were fun!
Cracking tip, never heard of a curry comb. Looks excellent.
Yeah! The guy that did our estimate actually told us that tip. Thank you!
Ahhh! We missed the Premiere!!! Watching now!
That is ok! Thank you for watching!!
Ah! Forgot to leave a post-watch comment! Such a great idea to get a pro to apply the spray foam! It's also cool to see that taping the surfaces of the hat channel trick worked soo well! That alone was an awesome nugget!
@@BEAdventurePartners We man it helped so much! Thanks, kels and jay!!
I've emailed 3 places with no response as well. Still too cold here but need a plan soon! I imagine it was a nice stress reliever to have a project where someone else does all the worrying!
(Way to give some love to the wrestlers with your shirt!!)
Hahah thank you, that is pacos high school wrestling shirt! I hope you find someone soon too! It is such an exciting step!
no matter what the price comparison is... it is always cheaper to get a professional to do the spray foam... just due to the aggravation factor of doing that job yourself... well done guys
That is very true! Thank you so much!!
Thank you! This was a lot of help.
You're welcome!
They did a great job.
They did! We are super happy with it!
Torch heat up scraper a little cut like butter
Hmm have never heard of this method before!
@@GustheStruggleBus it's called hot knifing used on foam board but dame thing foam
@@elbertwatford2904 We will look into that thank you!
Amazingly good vid. Subbed.
Awesome, thank you!
Great Job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Amazing job! You guys are getting close🙌.
Thank you so much!! we are getting closer lol
I thought spray foam expanded way more than that but it still looks good!!
Some kinds do! Thank you so much!
LOOKS AMAZING! SO EXCITING!
Thank you so much!
hows someone going to dislike this?! just found your channel, and i love it. love seeing the buses at this stage. my (hopefully) soon to be fiancee and i are going to be doing a bus soon!
Lol sometimes people just don't like the videos or the songs or content, but that's okay to each their own. So happy to hear that you guys are planning a project like this one. It takes a lot of mental and physical strength but it is worth it once you're in it. Congratulations to you and your soon-to-be fiance!!!
good energy but they are making alot of mistakes that will bite them in the butt later. alot of people seem to judge these videos as "how to's" as opposed to "how i did".
Holy gee, Meridith Paco awesome.
The bus really looks bigger inside.
Right!! It made it look huge lol! Thank you
Learned alot
So, this was the first of your videos that I saw...and I loved it so I went all the way back to the one where Paco bought the bus on line and then it got stuck in the mud and then on and on and here I am back here again.I watched all the videos. It was like a Netflix binge. I love you guys! I love that you got married! I love your kitty. I love Joey! I love PaPaw. I love Meredith's hair. I love Paco's hair and got to see him grow it longer. I love Paco's butt! But certainly not as much as Meredith does. How fun and entertaining and also educational. I loved the wiring videos cause I have always wanted to know how the hell those people did it. What an achievement! I gotta go. I got more videos to watch. And I forgot to say, I love Gus too!
WOW this is one of the best comments ever!! You really did get to know us over all the videos. We are so impressed you watched all of them hahah! It means so much that you enjoyed them and also found them helpful! Thank you so much Peggy!
Thanks for the tips!!
No problem!!
Great pro tip ! Thanks 🙏👍🏻
Absolutely, thank you!
The pizza song slaps.
Right! haha I am so glad I found it!
Well , they did a way nicer job on yours than the guys in my area did on mine... I'm going to need to get 1 kit and fill in the spots they missed... I thought that was just the way it was... after seeing yours ... they were just in too big a hurry... oh well, live and learn... yours turned out really nice... sure makes a difference doesn't it...
Oh no, I'm really sorry to hear that. We have heard a couple of horror stories ourselves. I hope the kit works and force up any holes that you might have. And yes it does make an amazing difference
Thanks guys.
Thank you for watching!
Very informative thanks
Thank you so much! Im so glad it was helpful!
Should have just place some 36grit sandpaper on your board and moved it back and forth and it would have took a\care of the high spots
hmm that is interesting idea !
Spray foaming is fine but one thing I find people keep doing is spraying foaming their wiring. It is going to be a pain if you ever have to troubleshoot electrical issues or run new wiring. I would use conduit with maybe a couple of access areas, so you can access more easily and pull wiring if needed.
We understand your concerns and we have them to, but we felt this was the best route for us, thank you for your suggestions though
We just bought a 40 foot bus also up here in Québec Canada and i am also looking to Spray foam my bus. So i have a question for you guys : How did you manage to cut the thermal bridge from the 13 hat channels all along the bus ?
In other words, how did you insulate those channels ?
I used the original insulation and stuffed what I could in there and then used a spay can to fill any holes!
Thank you ,Nice Video and great job .Looks like the way to go , How about below the floor , what you going to do,
Thank you so much!! It has made such a big difference and we love it! We did a sub floor and insulated it but we are not sure what will go on top yet!
That curry comb isn't bad, but you're gonna wish you'd gotten a surform tool. Cheap and available at any auto parts store.
Thank you for the tip 😊
I heard you don’t need a vapor barrier using closed cell foam as there’s not gap. Why did you install it
Better safe than sorry!
NICEEEEEEEEEEE
Thank you!
Looks like they did a great, professional and quality job. I'm not a fan of spray foam because of moisture issues and the rot, rust and harmful mold that can happen. God willing you don't have any issues in the future and thank you for sharing.
They did do a great job! We hope none of that happens either, for now, we are very happy with it!
MEREDITH and PACO 👍🏽👊🏽
I researched insulation years ago for my own bus build. Frankly, Daniel this is an astonishing post. The closed cell foam used here is not just waterproof, it's a complete vapor barrier. So, moisture? Rust? Rot? Mold? Not a chance! Closed cell foam is not food for mold, so mold won't even grow on the surface of it. People watch these videos to research their own bus builds, and they deserve the best information we can put out there. It's a shame you may have created any doubt about the best insulation choice there is for a bus conversion. I hope you just repeated rot you saw somewhere on the net and that you really didn't know better
Any idea how much you spent on Kilmat? Very well insulated. Thanks
we actually were fortunate enough to get sponsored by them so we didn't spend too much money on the Kilmat itself.
@@GustheStruggleBus What gave you the Kilmat + spray foam idea? Do you think the Kilmat really make a difference when you also did spray foam? I am planning on spray foam and was going to Kilmat my engine box like you did and wheel wells. Not sure if it will make a huge difference on the walls with spray foam as well, what do you think? Feel free to DM me on IG @skooliesavvy for a confidential answer since you are sponsered by Kilmat ;)
Also big fan of your videos!! Just finishing up my destruction phase and your videos are awesome!!
Lots of thermal bridging still, will have condensation still.
Why did you do both Kilmat and spray insulation? Is that recommended?
Kilmat is a sound deadener first so it is not an adequate source of insulation. We double checked with the company and they said it is fine and will still work great!
One of those things that make you go HMMMM... TFS
lol that is true lol
They make heat knives for that job If anybody else needs to know before. I'm old you know so I loved the songs. you may like this old song. Son of A Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You) Ft. Carly Simon (Album Version)
Thank you for the tip! And we will look into that song thanks!!
Those cheap tyvek? Suits are great for this kind of work! Sweaty as all get go but at least you ain't covered in insulation....
Lol that is so true!!
Does the Kilmat serve any function being underneath all the foam or was that a waste of money now?
It still serves the exact same function as before. It is providing noise reduction from outside noise and that will be in contact with the metal, which the kilmat is still touching and doing its job!
Why didn't the people you hired do the scraping and cleanup? I thought that was in the price.
They did do clean up as far as taking stuff down and shaving down the big parts. We did the rest because we had really specific needs in the amount to be shaved and it would have been extra!
@@GustheStruggleBus Gotcha! Thanks for the reply :)
What I know of how it works... Killmat under sprayfoam? Isn't that a waste of money?
It has worked really well so far! I believe it is still affective but that is up to you to decide for your personal build
@@GustheStruggleBus Maybe I was thinking of something else. 🤔
After thoughts, what would you have done different ?
Great question, so far nothing we're really happy with the results that we got from insulating the bus
That is some overkill on the kilmat.
Looks 👍
Thank you!
I know I said I was going to watch you guys all though but I did end watching this one I’m actually bidding on one myself and I as you know one really wants me to do it I believes I will or can I ended up getting diabetes well type 2 not major I could I actually loose weight and probably be ok but I got neuropathy in my feet bad so it’s really hard for me to walk or do anything the doctor said I got because of the diabetes but know matter what I do it won’t get better if walk exercise and work I can pro long not being able to walk so I said if that’s the case I never got out of Florida much I didn’t want to get a rv because I hated that plain picnic table dinette with a plain couch and tiny kitchen that was plastic with particular board as soon as it gets wet it swells and crumbles
oh no, I am so sorry to hear that. Please take care of yourself
you sure you needed killmatz with spray foam?
No but it helps! I was sponsored by them so there was a lot to of around!
Bus is FOR SALE czcams.com/video/s_djch6pLcs/video.html
If you aren't done yet... Try an electric Kitchen knife!!!
That is what the guys used before they left for the bigger parts! It worked really well but since we have wires in the walls we did not feel comfortable using it. But thank you!
You didn't want the roof raise?
Nope
What’s your final calculated R value?
It ended up being different in places because the thickness varies but the thickest part about 22
MEREDITH and PACO, we’ve decided we are going with a product that’s 1/4 thick with a R-value of 9 & can glue it on or stuff between spaces. ..Used it on a straw bale home previously. Super cheap too.
@@brandonsmith3060 What did you use?
@@annahunt3818 it’s called ultra low-e www.lowesouthwest.com/
The product seems to have changed a little, but it’s still very thin and super insulated compared to anything else...Especially in cost.
We are applying a protective layer between the bus metal and the aluminum skin of the insulation to avoid electrolysis and deterioration too.
Tiger spray foam is very affordable. Its a diy kit .
Yes! It is great stuff we have heard
I heard them DIY kits mess up all the time and dont harden and that would be horrible. Imagine spending all that money and all you get is wet foam that doesn't harden because it didnt mix right coming out. Totally worth the extra 300 to make sure it's done right
absolutely! When we looked up all the reviews it looked like it was pretty much a hit or miss. This part of the build is not one to be half-assed so spending a little bit of extra money was totally worth it in my book!!
It's just pure torture listening to that music.
hahah ok
WEAR MASKS
thank you
