Hi everyone, I hope you find this 1 year review of the Black Diamond Icon 700 useful - Don't buy it!
What then to buy instead?
@@magistradox39 hi there. That's a good question. I've had good luck with the Black Diamond Storm, and I like their new latch system. I guess it just depends on your own needs though, and what you intend to use your headlamp for (camping, hunting, burglary, etc)? lol
@@JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors I have one black Diamond. I think I payed 150$ < or so. But I want a second one. I do camping, hiking, kayaking and boating. Water proofed would be great. I will check the model out you advise me.
@@magistradox39 what sort of light brightness do you need? The reason I tried the 700 was because it was really bright (so, good for caving) but most people don't need that much light.
@@JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors Yes. I think I don't really need so much brightness. The last time I used a headlamp was to setup two hammocks (Warbonnet and Hennessy) at night. A rechargable one would be nice, but if it falls apart after a year, it makes no sense.
I just like to have a backpack or duffel bag packed for every situation (hiking, camping, kayaking, boating). And there is always something missing. Hard to get it perfect and not to over pack. I'm not even sure if the headlamp I bought is not even from Petzl. Can't check it right now. But the storm series from Black Diamond looks durable. And that's for me the Nr. 1 buying reason for a product. Having stuff what lasts long.
Super useful review. Short, clear and to the point. Thanks a lot!
Thanks very much, Sam. I'm glad it was helpful.
Very concise be informative in a short time. Perfect!
Thank you very much Padma Dorjee.
Neat overview - thanks Joshua!
Thank you. :)
Really good points Joshua. Something to be aware of for this snd other headlights. 👍🏼
Thank you, Wild Mountain Man. I appreciate the input.
Before I even watch this buy it I love it
Thanks Joshua. Great information. Which headlights you recommend for.above 4 hours usage in.350 lumens or more.in hiking environment with waterproof for rainy conditions.
Thanks
Thank you sivasubramaniam subbian. I can only speak from my own experience, as there are many many headlamps on the market. However, I really like the modern version of the Black Diamond Storm.
The pop noise in your nicely brief into is nicely nice
Many thanks rzl dzl!
thank you for helping me retract my ebay bid....holy crap...almost bought a lemon.😂 Can you recommend any other led light (Headlamp, flashlight, etc.) that uses AA or AAA batteries? I love these as AA and AAA rechargeables are getting better and better and you can use these lights for years provided no cracks occur.😇😇😇
Hi Justmyopinionlol - tbh, the AA and AAA headlamps seem to be getting more rare. I've got a nitecore NU33 that uses an integrated lithium battery, which I like so far (I did a video on it). May I ask what sort of conditions you intend to use your headlamp in? Fenix makes a couple models that have pretty good reputations, but again...much for AA or AAA these days. I also feel some of the higher end petzl lamps are good too.
I also had the same problem with my old Icon. It's infuriating that they haven't improved the locking mechanism.
Thanks for sharing your experience Mark. Yeah I agree, I feel it's a lot of money to pay to have to deal with such a significant flaw.
l had the same problem and they replaced in under warranty. I kind of fixed the old, damaged battery pack by glueing a thin strap of metal along the upper side of the back, above the hole where the plastic latch goes in. It holds for now, doesn't flex much. In any case, this design is quite surprising.
Hi Epad Not, thanks for sharing that. That's a really great idea - can i ask what sort of metal you used? I'm inclined to do that to mine as well, thank you. I've really been pretty disappointed by some of the recent BD Headlamps that have come out. I just don't feel they are anywhere as robust as some of their older ones.
please tell us where you got that metal piece from! :)
@@spaltmass please see my other reply. Edit: I've described everything in detail but my comment was removed/hidden. Short version: I've made it myself from car sunshade frame.
Great video. As a result I won’t buy this. I’ll look at the storm instead.
Hi Sanjio.com, thank you. That's funny timing. I just published a video a few days ago saying don't be the Storm either. lol. I've made two videos on the Storm - one an initial review from about a year ago, and another update on the same headlamp. I think you might find them helpful.
@@JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors ah! Okay I ordered a Nitecore NU25 instead. Nearly got a BioLite 425 but I like the dedicated red light button on the Nitecore for astrophotography. Less confusing than multiple button presses. Cheaper too and lots of positive reviews. I’ll see how it is when it arrives!
@@Sanjmaghera good choice. Nitecore asked me to review their NU 33 for them a while back, and I was pleased with it. I had read prior that nitecore and fenix were owned by the same company, but now that information seems to be hard to come by online. Best of luck with the NU25.
