acclaimed stories to ever come out of Japan. A series troubled in its production, experienced in its telling and written by one of Japan's best mangakas Yoshihiro Togashi. I'm Totally Not Mark and it's time for me to analyse the adventures of Gon, Killua, Kurapika & Leorio as they begin their journey in the first arc of this series, The Yorknew City Arc. The world building is subtle but present in the arc. Someone will recant his words.
I read once in an interview that Togashi originally planned to write Gon as "the Shonen Jump protagonist that everybody would want as their son," and scrapped that idea when he realized that sort of character didn't fit the story he wanted to tell with Hunter x Hunter. I think it was 100% the right move.

Killua isn’t a character, he’s a fashion statement. Like look how many clothes he wears.
Honestly though. Gon wears a few different fits throughout the show, but always ends up wearing his green jacket and shorts, while Killua is always dripped out and always changing up his style.

Gon isn't angry at his father. He just wants to find out why he loves being a hunter so much. It is that amoral, non-judgmental curiosity at work.
I think its also him just wanting the challenge to find his father. He seems to have few personal feelings about Ging. Even when he meets him, he doesn't really treat him like his father, more like a cool stranger he looked for.
He wasn't angry at his father, he was just sad thinking that he could've lost his way.
We even see this non judgemental curiosity later when he meets zepile
I hope he does the chimera ant arc in 3 parts, its so dense it deserves it.

Small correction: Gon didn't sell his license. He pawned it. He offered it as collateral on a loan, basically. If he fails to pay back the loan in time, they keep the license.
The symbolism of Kurapika's chains are amazing. If Kurapika wants to chain the spiders to hell he has to be on the other end of his own chain, destroying his enemy and himself at the same time.

Yeah I know Mark comments on how the Scarlet Eyes/Specialist mode is overpowered, and it is, but only conditionally. His powers are only effective against members of the Phantom Troupe. Once he's beaten them all, he will be more or less useless in terms of Nin abilities.

Except he specializes in something extraordinarily specific: being essentially untouchable by only a couple of handful of people. That's hardly well rounded. Otherwise he has a single chain he can use to combat everyone else.

@@archmagemc3561 Well Nen creates in its users something more akin to a fighting game roster then something like power scaling between characters. The Troupe are top tier characters, but Kurapika is a counter-pick specifically designed to have the advantage over their tools. Otherwise if Kurapika were to fight against the rest of the roster, he would be average or worse against their tools.

You actually already have all the info you need to understand the basis of Gon's feelings on his father, Mark. Remember the scene where when he was told his father abandoned him to be a Hunter, he said "Isn't that incredible? Being a Hunter must be amazing if he was willing to leave his son behind for it." Not word for word, but paraphrased.
Gon doesn't necessarily want to connect with his father traditionally as father and son, but he does aspire to follow his father's path in life and understand him and himself better along the way.
So he absolutely doesn't desire some sort of vengeance on his father, nor feel any malice towards him.
Hope he doesn't see these comments. I want him to come to this conclusion on his own.

@@raifthemad Kurapika didn’t expect to win, he knew he was going to win, that’s why he didn’t just kill Uvogin off the bat and went back an forth with him even letting his arm get broken, he had already tested his chains when he captured him before remember, there was nothing left to question between their power at this point.

I always interpreted the scene with Gon and Killua as Gon seeing that Killua is aimless, and offering Killua should come with him to make him cheer up. Killua saying yes but 'only until I find what I want to do' is more of a defense mechanism than the coldness I think Mark described. I think he was so grateful to Gon in that moment, afraid of being left behind, and didn't want to seem vulnerable and how he DID want to stay with Gon, he just wouldn't have asked.
Never realized there could be such different interpretarions of such a sinple scene. I'm curious how others saw it!
I saw it similar to you but I don’t think gon asked for Killuas sake I think he just wanted to stay with his friend but I agree with the killua part
@@dantemitsoyu977 Yeah I didn't mean to say that Gon SOLELY asked Killua for his sake. He wants Killua with him anyway, and in that moment I just think he made sure to ask him then and there since he realized Killua had nowhere really to go.

I can't believe he skipped over Uvo killing 3 monsters whilst paralysed from the neck down 😅 That was the moment I realised this show was truly dark and whimsical. I think Uvogin was a really cool and a under appreciated character. In alot of ways he reminds me of Gon with his abilities, lack of morality, but his loyalty and love for his friends. He was born in a bad place and may have been like gon if raised somewhere else.

@@iceyy8741 Gon has kind of a screwed sense of morality where who is good and bad is strongly defined by his personal relationship with somebody and their utility to him. For example, he is rather fine with Killua who is a killer and openly murdered and gets along well with Hisoka, who is a ruthless bloodthirsty psychopath while hating the Phantom Troupe for being murderers. Which makes sense, he is a kid and has no consistent sense of morality yet and probably will never develope it due to the world he lives in.

@@iceyy8741 He doesn't wants to be one, I don't disagree with you, I am just talking about the circumstances Gon met and befriendet Killia first. Actually, Killia undergoes quite a great development when he becomes a more moral person over time who doesn't kills if it isn't necessary, compared to the beginning when he would immediately kill people.
Can't wait for him to see the Chimera Ant arc.

@@lonjas9191 Everyone agrees (even youtubers like mark that specialize on anime) that is one of the greatest arcs in shonen. So maybe you need to pay more attention. It has too many themes and amazing moments to just list them here in a youtube comment. If you don't enjoy komugi and meruem and the fights in the arc idk what to say to you. Also one of the best powerups un anime history.

7:26 It wasn't until recently that I figured that this moment is the reason why the series is called "Hunter x Hunter". Gon is a Hunter who is "hunting" for his father who is also a Hunter. So Gon is the "Hunter Hunter"
Sorry to break your bubble, but Hunter x Hunter is hunter said twice because Togashi was watching a comedy sketch (manzai) where the person making the jokes kept saying something twice (sorry, I don't remember the exact details, and even if I did it won't translate well into English), and he really liked that joke.
Only being usable against the spiders is a MAJOR check and balance for Kurapika.
That's true for chain jail, but every other chain of his doesn't have that restriction. And emperor time is only dependent on his eyes.

What I absolutely love about the 2011 adaptation is how unassuming it is. In a world that colorful and bright, I never expected to be hit with emotional gut punches one after the other. That contrast is just fantastic.
This exactly. It’s so great to see something so bright and colorful become so dark and emotional. It’s one of the reason I hate most of zack Snyder’s work. Something doesn’t have to be visually gray and drab to depict dark themes.
I love both the visuals of the 2011 and the 1999 yorknew city arc. The points you made of the 2011 version are very valid, but I also enjoy how "silent" and threatning yorknew city is in the 1999 version. Like a city filled with crime and you know something bad is happening every night.
Yh it really lures you in like,
First episodes: "oh this looks fun and like maybe a mix between naruto and pokemon".
Many episodes later: "why am I still crying? "
i absolutely LOVE that too. It looked like such a wholesome anime for kids when I first started it...
boy was I wrong. instantly became my favourite anime of all time, and it still is, 6 years later.
Nah, it completely ruines the rewatchability of the show, proven by how most of the 2011 anime fans skip the hunter exam arc in the rewatches.
I have to admit the 99's representation Kurapika, his desire for vengeance and darkness is just masterfully done, 2011 version serves the role but you just can't top the darkness of the scene with the chains restraining him.
I now need to watch the 99 version. Thank God it is on youtube

My advice would be to watch hxh1999 from the start
They have added some filler episodes for the hunter exams but they are quite good with depth, world building and dark moments.
I prefer 1999 over 2011, atleast upto the end of Yorknew city arc

@@sv4647 I remember dismissing the 1999 version because I typically watch anime dubbed and the dub for 1999 I didn’t really like. Also my younger brother liked the newer look of 2011 and we watched it together so that’s what we went with.

I love HunterXHunter so much. It's so nice to see Mark picking up on the subtle things about Gon and Killua's characters that become so important later. Togashi is so good
Regarding your theory on why gon wants to see his dad…I don’t think this is a spoiler since I think Gon said early on so I’ll say it. Gon simply wants to know what Gin is doing that’s so great he’s willing to abandon his only child for.

I watch the 2011 anime adaptation of this arc and my eyes were glued to the screen the whole time the fact the ending theme was so epic certainly helped with that

I love the Phantom Troupe so much as a villain organization and this is where Kurapika starts to become my favorite character along with Hisoka in the shadows playing his games

I thought this arc was the best ever, until I kept on watching. This arc is still incredible, the fact that Togashi did 2 god tier arcs in one shonen story takes my breath away, the man is an undisputed genius.
Kurapika's Emperor's Time is my favorite ability in fiction due to the way it perfectly encapsulates his character and motives, as well as the immense states it adds to any situation.
One more reason he's still my favorite character in the series to date.
Well pretty much all of the nen abilities actually "perfectly encapsulates" the characters using them as nen is tied to the personality of the characters.

Bruh Kurapika became the mc this arc and I loved it.
I feel like the 90's anime is on a whole other level whenever I see snippets of it. That's crazy
The staff did an unbelievably superb job for the limited time and money they were given.
The Yorkshin Arc '99 version goes down in anime history. The staff gave it their all, and it was totally worth it.
You thought the '11 version was amazing? Pfft. It's child's play compared to '99 version. Just because it's newer it doesn't mean it's better.
Just listen to the soundtrack. Sahashi Toshihiko (my favourite composer of all time tied with Hans Zimmer) at his best. He has incredible talent when it comes to depicting emotion through music. The HxH '99 OST has soooooo many different emotions. The HxH theme, Kurapica's theme, "Yorkshin no Machinami" (The Streets of Yorkshin), and "Kaze no Uta ~hopes and tears of island~" are some of the best out of SO many awesome tracks, and there are a couple of tracks that are clearly homages to movie OSTs (like "Kyoutendouchi no Dai-dasshutsu" being a complete homage to "Klendathu Drop" from Starship Troopers).
One day I want to make a video essay pointing out just how amazing HxH '99 is because I'm sick and tired of anime fans laughing at it just because it'd old. Once you start analysing how scenes are shot, your mind will be blown by the talent.
The 1999 Kurapika vs Uvo fight and the former's subsequent breaking down are still some of the most memorable scenes in anime for me!

Editor is a master at finding the right clips, when Mark theorieses upcomming plot point.

Yorknew arc was wild ride. It rly went from a wholesome anime to whatever that was and I’m so glad I experienced it
@Alex Kalinin that's the thing I like about it. It paints it's self as this wholesome anime where this kid is just trying to find his father. At least the 2011 version. The ost didn't help either😂 When in reality it's way darker than that. Literally first few episodes u have ppl dying and loosing all their hope of ever amounting to anything.
Got to say I enjoyed the 1999 version because the direction and style really fit with the dark aspect of this arc. The character interaction also feel genuine as well.
I feel that even if the direction was great, some moments were not as impactful. In the 99 version the fight of Uvo against the shadows beast was so quick that I just didn't care about it. Also, I feel some moments dragged (the whole episode of Pakunoda wondering what to do was too slow for me)
But all the Kurapika filler was great and the fight Chrollo vs Zeno and Silva too. Uvo vs Kurapika was great in both versions I wouldn't know which to choose
Edit: I forgot that we got no Phantom Requiem in the old one. One of my favorite moments of HxH by far
@@isaiascanete6651 the both have there pros and cons. Honestly it can be hard to pick. I do think the dark colors of 1999 do help the arc more then the brightness of 2011 but the new version did really put there best effort into it
@@Chris-th5fl the only arc were I feel the old version STOMPS the 2011 is Heaven's arena. It was just more fun and wholesome with more intense moments in general (I prefer Gon vs Hisoka 2011 tho, great fight and great memes)

TBH a lot of character interactions were better mostly on 2011, just compare for example, Gon and Killua's interactions with the Phantom Troupe while Gon and Nobunaga were arm wrestling, 99 dialogues are way too fast, when every PT memeber talks, interacts, and when Nobunaga made his speech it all feels kind of rushed, on 2011 the buildup was better, everyone wondering about the "chain bastard", Nobunaga remembering Uvo, crying for him, Gon noticing that and getting angry for how hypocrite they were, felt with a way better pacing.
The soundtrack on 2011 was also more varied but that is more subjective maybe.
Kurapika is so OP until you realize that he can only use his full potential to only 13 people (12 to be exact)

@@FinnThunder6 Aside from fighting the 13 he is a competent Nen User with a powerful ability but nowhere near any of the top hunters we have seen like Netero, the Zodiacs, killuas father & grandfathers etc. We see that in the current arc.

7:36 Fun fact. Ging was most likely based on Togashi himself. And you may ask yourself how is that? Well listen to the things his wife said when they were about to be married. Togashi basically said he wants no ceremony, no kids, no need to live with each other, being free to cheat on one another and working on their own. His wife was so pissed that she was about to call off the wedding which finally made Togashi come to his senses. That is both hilarious and sad, but makes SO MUCH sense when you think about who Ging is.

I don't really see how you can read that Gon resents Ging. He showed at the start of the series that he doesn't care that Ging left, showing interest in what about being a hunter would cause him to leave, not showing any interest in the leaving itself.
Strong agreement. I think Mark is projecting a lot more into this series, and especially into Gon's character, than is actually there.
HxH is kind of a double fake-out. It pretends to be a regular shounen adventure, but then it defies expectations left and right, making it seem like it has hidden depths. But those depths are actually incredibly shallow, and the entire series is ultimately just a pretentious slog.
At least, that's my take from the 2000s anime. Maybe the other versions are better; I have no idea.
@@ShelbyAQD You are absolutely incorrect there. I never watched the 1999 adaptation, but the 2011 adaptation and the series as a whole is considered one of the best manga ever for a reason.

The Hunter Exam was a great start,
Killua's family was basically filler,
Heaven's Arena was fine,
York New was kinda aimless,
Greed Island just wasted its potential,
the Chimera Ant part dragged on forever,
and the Election arc was an unsatisfying conclusion.
I love that Mark is picking up on a lot of this character stuff for Gon that I missed the first time around. Especially with how it'll pay off later...
The reason Kurapika has the smoothest hair out of the main cast is so that you don't cut your hands while reading how edgy and metal he is.
This and the Chimera Ant Arc are very strong contenders for the best arc in the series.

This Arc in the 99 anime has such a great art direction. It's so Noir and atmosferic

Don't let the fact that Kurapika bought a shovel to his fight with Uvogin distract you from the fact that Bungee Gum has the properties of both rubber and gum.
Somebody needs to show him the scene in the 1999 Anime where Gon and Killua have a conflict about saving an injured fox bear.

It’s a different part. Where Killua almost killed the Fox bear. Then Aunt Mito and Gon convince him to not kill it.

This arc is the absolute peak of shonen.
The chimera ants is beyond that in my opinion. It's more like a political critique of how we work as society.

I think Chimera Ant arc is the best arc *in isolation* but when we look at the series as a whole there's no doubt Yorknew is the most important one. It's the point where most people truly fall in love with the series. It's like a fine knot tied around what the series has built toward.

I'm glad you're feeling a lot of resonance with the story, one thing I will say about Ging is, you may want to consider the cultural lens a bit here; while the wester reaction is," he left his son", that's not necessarily the only, or the intended, response.
Gon's feeling are, probably, more admiration than resentment, that's who he is.

Lowkey one of my favorite arc of any anime, when I watch the 1999 one of this arc. It’s truly put HxH in another tier for me
I love how in the manga and 1999 anime everyone had old fashioned phones but in the 2011 adaptation people have smartphones

York New City is where I really fell in love with this series. The show goes from a mild show about a boy with some darker undertones to a wonderful show that pulls you in with how amazing it is. Togashi really hit his stride here for me. I love the show with all my heart
