- Step by step instructions for adding in a lawn sprinkler zone.
In this video I add in a new sprinkler zone to an existing sprinkler system. Video covers connection to existing sprinkler system; trenching, valve, piping, and head installation. Valve wiring is also covered and parts used in video are annotated. - Jak na to + styl
You make shoving the funny pipe onto the barb look easy. Whenever I try it, it's hard to do.
20 years of practice I guess.
Thanks for this video. I needed to add a valve for a flower bed and the mainline ran directly perpendicular to it so this solution was perfect.
Excellent work; Clean and descriptive...Thank you!
Very clear and simple instructions. Good work.
Thank you. I wrote everything down and I'm headed to Lowes. I expect I'll be making a few trips.
Good luck!
awesome video. Great instructions! Thank you!
Yes you can run 2 sprinkler valves with one station wire. Careful with how many heads you use on the 2 zones, it's easy to have performance issues running 2 valves together.
Great video. My only complaint is that it is a bit quite, but that could just be my Chromebook speakers. Thank you for taking the time to make this informative and instructional video.
I agree. Sound could definitely be louder.
At various points in a sprinkler system there will be low spots in the trenches even if there is slope in the system. Water sits in these low spots and will freeze and break the pipe if the system isn't blown out or if there isn't automatic drains. The automatic drains shut off when a circuit is watering & open when the circuit shuts off. See my video on "How an automatic sprinkler drain works" for more info. I put one upstream of the valve to protect the supply line feeding the valve.
Hi John. I'm not sure I completely understand the question. When I install new valves I will always check the solenoids to make sure they are snug in the port. Then with water pressure against the valves I will open and close them manually a few times to make sure they are operating correctly. I think Rain Bird might be telling you not to over tighten the solenoids. Basically you want the solenoids snug but not too tight.
Check at the timer first. If you have spare wires at the timer there's a good chance you'll have them at the valve box. That was the case here, there were spares at the timer and in the valve box. I didn't test flow to heads before backfilling because I knew they would work. I knew I had 8-11gpm (gallons per minute) to work with and the sprinkler heads installed would only being using 6gpm.
Remember to add time to that station at the timer and make sure one wire from the valve goes to the station wire and the other wire from the valve to the common wire.
Good Job id like to do that in the summer. Gotta learn a few things first. I like the way you do everything.
Thanks Andrew for the feedback.
You can add piping & heads in as long as you don't exceed the flow available for the circuit. If you overtax the flow available to the circuit the heads won't perform properly.
Great video
Really good information.
Thank you!
Wow you are so educated on this stuff! Maybe someday I will pay you to teach me more haha jk! ill just subscribe and watch all your videos! I live in Salt Lake. You did an awesome job explaining details. Thanks for the video :)
Thanks Aaron.
It is Christy's Red Hot Blue Glue. I get mine at a Rain Bird distributor. I think Home Depot and Lowe's carry it.
Very helpful thanks I guess only two heads that area needed
good video thanks for share
Correct. Didn't have any on the truck so I used regular wire nuts.
Yes. If your system is on a timer you'll need to figure a way to get a timer wire to the sprinkler valve.
What brand PVC cement are you using, the blue color and where can you get it? Thanks
Thanks - my system is on a timer and I have an additional 3 wires running from the timer to the location of the valves. The weird part is that all the 3 wires have 0 Volts when I checked them with a voltameter. I even connected each of them to an existing working valve to check, but it did not work.
Thank you for the demo.
Thanks Leo for watching.
@@Iscaper when we add zone after that how to add in the timer? Please explain it to me.
@@leoawag8515 You need to run a timer wire from the sprinkler valve to the timer, or you could add a battery powered timer to the solenoid on the sprinkler valve.
@@Iscaper Thank you sir so can you do the demo how to add a powered battery to the solinoid?on the sprikler valve.?or How to wire or connect the battery to the sprinkler valve?
Awesome mellow presentation without the annoying blasting music. TU so the blue is the glue what's the purple stuff?
Great video. We want to add a new zone and was going to get a company to do it but getting a quote and response is painful. I think I can do it myself.. We have a hunter irrigation system and I do not know if I have a spare wire. The only part that I am unsure about is the wiring and connecting to the controller and programming. You kinda skipped that part :)
Man your channel is huge, I love it, so much good stuff here! Hey.. I was reading up on a device, today, called Add-A-Zone. It's two ended, one part goes at the controller, the other goes at the VB. So you cut in an extra valve cause a zone is overloaded... but you don't have the wire to do it... that where Add-A-Zone comes in... And the new valve is controlled as a new zone on the timer (so you do need one available) ,just as normal. Have you ever used it? I'm wondering how it works...??? I'm guess it pulses the current at different frequencies, and thus determines which one ought to be working? Make sense? They are about 80 bucks... could come in useful....
I've run across the Add-a-Zone a couple of times and from what I've seen it works pretty good. You do need an open station terminal for it to work. It's often a cheaper alternative to running a whole new timer wire. Another option is to wire 2 valves to the same timer wire, but only if you have enough flow to run both sprinkler circuits. A final option that I've used is the Rainbird Easy Rain battery operated single valve controller. It's nice to have more than one arrow in the quiver. Here's a link: www.rainbird.com/documents/turf/ts_EasyRain.pdf
I wish they still made these valves!
Love the video very informational. Just curious what to do if there isn't extra wires in the existing valve box?
It's gets tricky if you don't have an extra timer wire at the valves. You can run two valves/zones off one wire but you need to watch for flow problems on the two zones. I would probably go with a battery powered timer that fits right in the valve box, like the Rain Bird ESP-9V. Here's a link: www.rainbird.com/products/esp-9v-battery-operated-controller
I live in Utah currently.
What GPM are those nozzles??
Very helpful .Can you show how to add it on the control box? Thanks
Total cost for materials and labor was $380.
Thank You!!!
You're welcome!
I'm adding a new zone after expanding my backyard. Do I really need to add a new valve or can I just add PVC and expand the irrigation system? I have a lot of pressure in the current zone. Thanks
thx a lot
I did. It looks like those 3 wires are somehow not active. do you think I can splice one active wire to 2 sprinkler valves?
Can I add in a new anti syphon sprinkler valve into mainline which is currently going into a faucet with a simple T fitting?
I thing i noted that u did not use water proff conn on the splice is that on
Sorry if this sounds trivial but does it matter whether you use 3/4 x 3/4 tees vs 3/4 x 1/2 tees and their corresponding size barb adapters? Also it seems that Quick Fix coupling can help you out multiple times on the same straight run even for future repairs/additions. Thank you for all your teachings!
I like using the 3/4x1/2 threaded tees but either will work. That way I can use a 1/2" barb elbow in the PVC tee and a 1/2" barb elbow in the sprinkler head. If I'm using a lot of 1804 heads in a sprinkler system I can buy 1 bag of 1/2" barb elbows and not have to buy any 3/4" barb elbows.
Hi! Great video! A lot of work! haha I was wondering you wouldn't mind sharing your opinion on a little project I have going on, I lost one irrigation zone in my property due to a cement company not capping the sprinklers before pouring cement. Now I have a good size of the yard dead without sprinklers. Would it be okay to add 2 sprinkler heads to a zone that has already 4 heads distributing water? Using funny pipe too, because I have no idea how to locate the pvc line for the zone that I am considering tapping on. Thank you in advance!
Harder question to answer because of all the variables. You can add sprinkler heads if you don't overtax the flow on your zone with 4 heads. You need to know the available flow in gpm (gallons per minute) in the sprinkler zone and the gpm your sprinkler nozzles are using. You can also tee into funny pipe and add another head if you don't exceed 5-6 gpm for both heads. Often times in a case like yours it's better to use something like Rain Bird's 3504 or 5004 rotors instead of spray heads because you can nozzle them down to match the available flow you have in your sprinkler zone.
Thanks for sharing.
I’d like to tap into the water supply line to add a garden hose bib. Is that ok?
Yes
How in the hell did you not run in to a few snakes back there
Thanks
Thanks Abu for watching.
Ki kerry i allways like watching your videos i re did a spr sys i installed 5 rb 100df valves with a rb espme and was having troble with the valves all closing i found out that the slo on the valves were open a little bit rb told me they have 2 to wotk have u ever herd of that i closed them and they worked fine all valves are new rb told me if u close the sol all the way thay will not work
You should use more primer and glue to avoid any leaks, good luck
Thank my friend
Hi John. Thanks for the informative video. One thing that confused me was why you continued to PVC after the first sprinkler. Why wouldn't you just run the funny hose (I guess that's what it is called) out to the second one. I assume there is a reason, but not apparent to me - thanks!
There's not enough flow available in funny pipe to run multiple sprinkler heads. There's 5-6 gpm (gallons per minute) available flow in funny pipe and 10-12 gpm available flow using 3/4" PVC pipe. There's also friction loss issues running funny pipe that distance.
@@Iscaper John, Thanks for the answer!
I like the DIY cement caddy. What did you use for the handle?
I bought the glue tote a number of years ago at a sprinkler supply house.
Do you just backfill directly over the automatic drain?
Yes.
Does water pressure play a role in adding a new line
Who you calling me retarded I've looked in the mirror yet
Yes, pipe size and pressure determine flow in gpm (gallons per minute). How much flow you have will help you figure out how many heads you can add to a sprinkler zone.
what are these automatic drains? ive been doing irrigation for years and have never seen/installed these. im interested. Is it to winterize? guess u guys don't need to blow them out?
I've been using King auto drains for years. No need to winterize with compressed air when a sprinkler system has them. Here's a link: www.kinginnovation.com/products/78/king-drains
Materials were around $125.
Why would you use a bushing into the "T" instead of just using a corner piece?
Using a Tee instead of an elbow allows me to add in an automatic drain. The Tee is 3/4" SXS and the drain is 1/2" MIPT, so I need a 3/4" x 1/2" bushing SXT to add in the automatic drain.
Do you have problems with these permanently buried self drains leaking after a few years? I have some I inherited when I bought my house and so far I've had to replace 3 of them that were leaking severely after a 5 years or so, thankfully the installer placed them in 6" boxes so I could get to them easily.
I've had trouble with the ball and spring type drains but no trouble with the King auto drains.
Mine are all the ball and spring type so that makes sense.
Hi Kerry I Use A Lot The 3504.rb.Heads When. Do.I.use the 5004 rb heads what is the difference noz size or gpm
The 3504 rotor is a good mid-range head. I would use it in yards that are too big for 1804 spray heads and too small for 5004 rotors. Yard areas that are between 20' and 40' in dimension size would be good examples of where to use the 3504 rotors. You would determine the nozzle size of the 3504 rotors based on the available gallons per minute of the sprinkler zone and the actual size of the yard area you're working on. For example a 30' x 30' lawn area would be ideal for using 3504 rotors.
Great.
Thanks for watching.
1000th like!
Thank you!
Hi kerry have u ever had a new rb vslve have water come out of the dis side of the valve on applying water 4 the first time city water then stop
Yes. I think it's due to air in the system. Usually what I do is open all the valves manually before turning on the water the first time. Then as lines fill up I'll close the valves one at a time.
Thank u kerry i caled rb and spoke 2 hulio and he sed he never herd of that
Can you give me an estimate on how much all the materials cost for this project?
Was the cost consumer or contractor price?
Which PVC pipe cutter are you using?
Wheeler 5290.
I installed 3 gpm nozzles in these rotors.
If you do this as profession I could really need your expertise.
Where are you located ?
Why did you not cut all the weeds down first ? Just asking..
Hi I am new😁
nice instruction but i really don't think more sprinklers are needed for those weeds lol.
Why is the auto drain needed at each T ? Thanks.
I try to add auto drains at the low points in a sprinkler zone to prevent freeze damage.
@@Iscaper Thank you.
Hi, what is an automatic drain and what would you install? Thank you
How come you don't use a clamp on funny pipe?
It's one of the nice time saving features of funny pipe, you just shove the pipe onto the barbed fitting and you're done.
You didn’t show how to wire at the timer box.
I moved into a house that has an existing Rain Bird sprinkler system with 6 different zones. The property is being sub divided and im loosing the back half of the property (which currently has 3 zones that will no longer be needed). Is it possible to just move the current zones instead of buying a whole new set up? Or can I take the easy route and just cut off connection to the unused zones? What do you recommend? I appreciate your time.
Easiest way is to shut off the 3 zones at the timer by setting the station run times to zero.
I thought the auto drains had to be pointing down?
Below the bottom of the pipe. I like to install them on a 45 degree angle so if one goes bad it's easier to change.
iScaper1
I noticed that on some of your other videos ;-)
you don't use waterproof conectors and also how many rotors heads i can put in one zone
I was out of waterproof connectors when I made the video but I did install them later. How many rotors you can put on a zone depends on flow in gallons per minute available, water pressure, and nozzle size of the rotors you are using.
You need to check the pressure with a gauge at an outside faucet. You should have at least a good 60psi. If you have Well water you might wish to add a pressure pump to increase your water pressure. Then take a 5 gallon bucket and fill it while using a stop watch or second hand. When it is filled EXAMPLE 30 seconds, then you have 10 gallons per minute. Each sprinkler head has a Gallons Per Minute rate so lets say 1.5 so then with 10 gallons in the example you could place 6 sprinkler heads in one zone. It actually comes to 6.6666666 so for me I would go with 6 and not round up just to be sure you have good coverage and pressure. I am not a professional just a DYI guy.
Only thing is since when dont you need a blowtorch to heat up the funny tubing and no hose ring to secure it to the 1/2 iinch brackets? tsk tsk :)
Man there was still room in that box for another valve
You should’ve done 4 heads
Their dirt will be the wettest around!
You should have ran Poly it is better than pvc pipe
Why? I'm asking because I don't know the difference besides flexibility of the poly line. Thank you ahead of time.
Hi. Greetings from Lagos Nigeria. I hope to consult you when I am ready to install mine and I will pay (hope not too much). I have many questions but not to borther you now until i am ready. very inspiring
Thanks for the feedback. I'll help what I can when you're ready.
Ok. Thanks. See you later
I didn't know they allowed porn on youtube! man, this guy can really lay pipe!
no teflon or rectorseal??? have fun fixing your valves in the next year or so. Trust me, without it, the front or the back of your valves will leak.
If I had used a threaded sprinkler valve I would agree with you, but the valve used was a Rain Bird 100DVFUU union valve with an o-ring that seals against the male adapter in the manifold.
you don't use Teflon or rectorseal on non-threaded valve. I love how everyone is an expert. good video man
