    #Rome #Gladiators #SeeUinHistory #History
Wiki: A gladiator (Latin: gladiator, "swordsman", from gladius, "sword") was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena.

Actually, the Thumbs Up signal was aimed at the throat to show that the gladiator should be finished off, and the Thumbs Down was a dismissal--"Let him go." This may have varied per emporer/organizer, and probably did since at some point the signals got reversed.

@Olias I learned this from an expert in Roman history. At some point along the way the signals got reversed and currently you're right about the interpretations, though originally they were different.

Gladiator classes were foreign and domestic styles, weapons, and Armour. The Armour was more used as a handicap to even gladiator classes out and about each have unique strengths and weaknesses.
But yeah the styles came from all over thr known world and represented beaten foreigners and/or glorious Roman victories or legends.

The arenas were indeed dominated by men but women also appeared from time to time, although it was unusual and against all social standards. Some were forced, others made it for money or glory. Women did not fight men, they fought animals or even each other.

*gladiators didn’t say “we who are about to die salute you,” that’s a phrase popularized by Hollywood.
As is your description of the thumbs up thumbs down, that’s a French misinterpretation popularized by Hollywood (immortalized in the painting that inspired the movie Gladiator), the only surviving records on gladiator fights marked the decision as what translates to “with a turned thumb,” there are no records on which way meant what , but the most generally accepted is down meant sheath the weapon and sideways meant execute, but again there’s no actual definitive answer to what thumb position took or spared a mans life
