The story of Caesar's best Legion (Full History of the 10th, Pt.1)

- In this video I will be going over the first half of the history of "LEGIO X" from Baetica, who earned their place in History through their great efforts and loyalty to their general.
It's hard to talk about Roman History without mentioning Julius Caesar, just like it's hard to talk about Julius Caesar without mentioning his famous 10th. How this man grew to such reputation and wealth in one of the most critical periods of European History is largely credited to the battles he won. What is overlooked, however, is the men that stood by him in these battles. In particular, a Legion that constantly spearheaded into battle ahead of the rest, and anchored entire battles in his favor, is the 10th "Equestris"; the Legion that Caesar and the other legions were glad to have by their side no matter how bad the situation...

I just think it’s crazy that literally as long as humanity exists, the name Gaius Julius Ceasar will be remembered and fabled. Is that not true immortality?
Litteraly what i was thinking, he is one of the most famous people that has lived on this earth, even when people dont know who he is, they always know his name and know he was roman, which in itself explains how popular he actually was, same with Alexander the great, names that will travel until the end of times.
@@solinvictus2045 makes me wonder if they understood just how much they were going to change the course of the world.
@@philipdangelo6602 i dont think they did, i dont think anyone is aware of their greatness until they die, and yet when they die they still live, inside of us.
Like A fkn man!
could be attributed to the european expansion a thousand years after
julius caesar and his men really were larger than life characters, the history of the relationship between him and his legions could be a book in of itself.
Agreed. I hope they at least make a movie! We could really use a quality Roman movie...

@@HistoriaMilitum Nah itll never fit a movie, there's too much. We need HBO's Rome to be rebooted with Game of Thrones levels of resources.
I swear, the best documentaries on are youtube right now. It's a golden age!
@James Rooks Your opinion is invalid
Totally right. So much great work on here. Very well researched, hope this is monetised as they more than earned my view!
Seen em all.
Very true.
@James Rooks i bet you watch CNN...
Caesar with his forced marches and engineering were terrifying and awesome.
he was a brilliant tactician.
Some would say the Caesar was only good because of his legions but I would say that he was a lion leading an army of lions.
@@alteisengenji8874 He himself is a 'great' person but if he didn't have legions such as the 10th and vice versa he wouldn't do much. He made them and they in turn made him.
@James Rooks the battle of Alesia was insane
one observation though, he regularly guilt-trips the 10th Legion to do his bidding
It’s amazing, how time has passed, and yet these men will never be forgotten, Rome will never be forgotten. Ave Roma!
@Rome total war 2 Quintilius Varus, give me back my legions!
if u think about it, rome never fell it may well be controlling us right now
They left the greatest and long lasting legacy than any other empires in the world. The only empire that ruled Europe for 500 years with an iron fist.
I just started making videos about ancien secret and old civilisation
Have a look and help me out
2nd year Latin. Caesar gallic wars.
5:28 A joke so legendary it made Caesar laugh and random people 2000 years later.
A joke, that I sadly, do not get.
They were taken the piss. "look at us been made equestrian noble posh high society" he promised to promote us to cohorts and is better than his word.
Just like on Ceaser's triumph they sang something about lock up your woman cause Ceaser will bang them. Just tongue and cheek

I didn't know that the 10th were Spaniards. It makes sense when I now think about it. The Romans adopted a great deal of lessons from their wars in Spain, including the Gladius, the short sword which would remain a Roman stable for several centuries. I guess I will have to read more about the Roman conquest of Spain.
Wonderful video! Caesar really was brilliant, both as a general and as a leader. He had keen insight into human nature and seemed to have a gift for motivating his men. Like Alexander he shared the hardships & dangers with his men or at least appeared to. He very often lead from the front, sword in hand.
To be honest, spanish people as a whole have always been fabled for fighting, so to speak. When the Spanish Empire was in it's golden age, after a great victory over Francisco I ,King of France, was taken prisioner and taken to Madrid. When he got there, and the first thing he saw was small kids playing around with wooden swords, he said: " it is as if the country itself gives birth to armed men" (roughly translated from Spanish)
I'm currently reading the book about this period and the conquest of Gaul. It's awesome how we can learn about things that happened 2,000 years ago in such detail.
I just came across your channel today and I love it dude. It's just like you said in your first video. Many people don't talk about the units and men themselves who won the battle for Rome but rather Rome as a whole. Shedding light on the men themselves is just as much an important part of history as anything else. And the deeds they did do deserve to be remembered.
Continue this series please. We get the macro events of these battles all the time, but the micro events get overlooked.
a really informative vid, thank you for giving us a brief insight about this legion's history!
This was excellent! Well produced and really informative. I can’t wait to watch the rest of your stuff 👍
Wow...what a quality video! Great work!!!
Looking forward to see part 2
Your videos are one of the best here. They are so straight to the point I have no words to describe it! Thank you for this gold knowledge. Please make more interesting videos about Rome.
Loved your presentation, the threading of events and the trivias made it all the more interesting.
This is just great, honestly the best on the Legions I've seen on CZcams. Awesome job!
The production quality of this documentary is amazing. The narrator. Production. The music. Oh the music. It works.
And the size of these battles are of a scale that many do not realise. For example that battle between the Romans and the German King. The battle front was in excess of 4 miles wide. It would take a horse at full gallop over 3 minutes to run from one end to the other. On perfectly flat terrain. When you realise this. You then really appreciate the skill of the Roman's. Their Millitery Maxim, Command structure and their General Caesar.
Thank you for making this.
Awesome! Love this series, great attention to detail & storytelling. Well done!
This was an incredibly informative video. Very well done, keep it going!

@@HistoriaMilitum Did the Legions have the look as depicted in the art?
@@sunofpeter2 Which aspect are you referring to specifically?
Extraordinary video! Greatings!
awesome, well done! Looking forward too part 2
Great documentary, I came your way from Told in Stone. I’d love to see the best approximate maps of Europe that the Roman’s had when maps are needed - rather than modern day maps. It’s just adds to the emersion I felt watching the doco. Great overall, thank you for putting this together for all of us history fans 😉
You need to do Vid on XI Claudia ( the only Legion allowed to have Trident and dolphin and color blue on there shields- Given promission By J.Ceasar after battle of Alesia no other Legion was ever allowed to use anything but Eagle wings of Juipter and Lighting bolts).
XI has the most Impressive war record of over 500 years Never defeated in battle station from Germania to Black sea , Romania, Judea, and invasion and defeat of Parthia and sack of its capital. And corrections in HBO Rome series Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo were of the XI Claudia not the 13th.
Final Note as said only XI Claudia was allowed the color blue on shield and Symbols of Neptune due to fact Legion was raised Mainly by Sammities ( but not only). Who Were merged with Trojan survivors who also worship Neptune , Apollo and Diana ). Only the praetorian guard was allowed the Purple but they were not a Legion. Any thing showing Roman legions using any other color is not historical correct !
Thank you so much for your comment! I am glad you're aware that the two protagonist centurions from HBO's Rome are actually from the 11th. I will definitely state that when I make a video about them, and the 11th is definitely on my list of top 10 of the most popular and effective.
Your analysis of the shields is very intriguing, as I originally wanted to include a description in every video about how each Legion's shield looked. However, since only one "scutum" was ever found, this information is very hard to get, and much of my sources contradict each other in terms of their design.
I would appreciate it greatly if you could list your sources, which I will definitely use for my future videos. Cheers!
List the sources dude
also V Macedonicahas blue on the sields (or at least in soem reenactment groups they have)
