I initially worked with Viggen during my military service about 26 years ago at F7 in Såtenäs, Sweden. During my 11 months there, the Viggen was replaced by the JAS 39 Gripen. The Viggen had a more powerful sound than the Gripen. It was always impressive to see them take off, especially with after burners at night.

Interesting note is that AJ37 didnt really need a stronger engine as it was a high speed low sltitude atracker, and the engine was not the limiter to the top speed at sea level,
According to Stellan Himmerby, retired AJ37 pilot, the airplane got to hot from the air resistance while flying low it could do seriously impressive short burst of low altitude speed on the third stage afterburner, but you had to throttle down to not damage the airplane as the temperature got to hot

Pratt & Whitney JT8D motor, with a different cold stage fan on the front end, afterburner and a thrust-reverser on the back end. This engine was developed for the Boeing 727 and 737 initially. Saab needed more power than what was available with the Rolls Royce Avon used in the Draken, since the Viggen is much heavier.

I'm proud of my country for quite literally dominating the aircraft technology and AS fighter capability during the Cold War, not only did Sweden develop the first successful post war Jet fighter with a swept wing design, but also the first tailless double delta wing aircraft, which also lead to the first ever use of the Cobra maneuver. Our air force was the 4th largest and could hold it's own against both the USSR and the US air forces.

    • @johnnywalkertexas1213

This is what happens when you let everyone go to university for a cheap cheap loan. Loads of creative and techincally inclined people will have access to advanced mathematics and education, and development will be relatively cheap. Swedish ingenuity is truly something to be proud of.
My cousin was part of developing the wings for JAS. He told me they bent them double in the stress test, and they held. They maxed out the limit multiple times and after that the head engineer said "let's break them for fun" and the amount of force they could take was imense. When they shattered it was like confetti.
My cousin said that the celebration party afterwards was epic.

Literally no part of said feature was to preserve the structural integrity, because there was no need

No reason not to acknowledge Saab's achievments, but no - they didn't develop the first successful post war sept wing fighter jet, they did come in a close third though. And "dominating the aircraft technology" (literally or figuratively) is a bit of a stretch, given the competition during the era, wouldn't you agree?

There never was a JAS version of Viggen. You're probably thinking about Viggen's successor, the JAS 39 Gripen. (Which had one of the fewest number of crashes during development of all fighter jets in history.)

@@darthwader4472 There were initially five versions - AJ (attack (main role)/fighter), Sk (two seater training version, had no radar, less internal fuel and no weapons capability), SH (sea reconnaissance, with a powerful sea radar, could also carry a camera pod), SF (reconnaissance without radar but with cameras, designed to fly in tandem with SH) and finally JA (fighter (main role)/attack). Towards the EOL for the Viggen system the AJ, SF and SH were upgraded to AJS (attack still the main role but could also carry a camera pod) and AJSF and AJSH (still reconnaissance but upgraded with some attack and fighter capabilities (auto cannon pod/attack rockets). The JA (which was a much newer and more advanced platform) was upgraded to JA37Di with an all-new (very Gripen like) glass cockpit and the datalink from the Gripen installed (among other things) and the Sk37 became the Sk37E (electronic warfare role, since there no longer was any need for a trainer version). Unlike the JAS Gripen which (more or less) can handle all three roles equally well and where the exact same aircraft is used for these the upgraded Viggen versions still had an emphasis on the originally intended role but the (limited) capability was there.
There are currently two flying examples of Viggen, the one in the clip above started its life as an AJ (not JA) and did receive the AJS upgrade but has been cosmetically changed to the launch "color scheme" (bare metal). The two-seater was also updated to the Sk37E spec but I assume they've removed the electronic warfare equipment).
TL;DR: you're right in that there was no JAS37 but there was an AJS37.
