You know that all these scenes weren't in the original script, McQueen got drunk one night and said he'd quit if he didn't get to have some fun on a motorbike. But thank god they're there, can't imagine the film without them...

No matter how many times I watch this movie I always think Hilts will get away. Thats how good this film is.
Pats the gas tank like it was his horse. You could even say that the gasoline was like blood as it ran out and soaked his leg at the end.

A classic scene from a classic film, Steve McQueen a true legend of cinema, love it.
The movie was made 21yrs before I was born and it was my first ever English movie I ever watched around 1988-89.
We are on 2022 and this will remain my favourite movie forever.
Recently, I went through the cast list and some of they are alive in their 90’s. I wish I could meet them ASAP.

McQueen was actually riding a Triumph motorcycle mocked up to look like a German bike ...!
It was a Triumph T 6, the "Nazi's" were riding Triumphs also. I've rode Triumphs myself since the 1960's. Triumph has probably made millions of those 90 degree vertical twin cylinder engines over the decades. Including McQueen's, the ones my dad rode in the 60's, and my current 2005 Bonneville.
You can buy a brand new one in 2021. Hard to believe my dad is in his 80's and Bonneville's still look almost exactly the same as they did in the 60's, (and probably before that). Still have the same 90 degree vertical twin cylinder. I went out and bought a triumph loved it . I'm watching it again and thinking about getting another one. I have a 66 in my garage that I'm rebuilding again. My Harleys are for long trips. Can't look at movies with motorcycles in them gets me stupid.

I’m 54 and so grew up when most WW2 vets were still middle age. I heard many stories from the war and what daring deeds they seemed to a young child such as myself. Coupled with watching Hollywood films, WW2 seemed like the most glamorous time in history. Sad that that bubble has long burst.
After all these years i still love this scene.

Before all of the technology that we have now -- I used to watch this movie (in re-runs of course) just to see the motorcycle chase scene.
Same bubba. My buddies and I were around 10 or 12 when this came out and we spent our allowances for something like 10 weeks
in a row to watch this movie mostly to watch the chase, and the chase mostly to see the jump.
I can remember watching this film at Christmas with all 6 my family I was about ten, my older brother had a triumph 650 Saint he was quick to point out the engine was a triumph he was my childhood hero sadly taken like McQueen by stomach cancer at the same age .

For wearing the uniform of an enemy combatant, Hilts (McQueen's character) would have been quite legally shot by the Germans (in contrast to the 50 executed escapees), as this act is contrary to the 1899 Hague Convention concerning the conduct and treatment of prisoners of war. The same does not apply to wearing civilian clothing, stealing of property without the intent of self-enrichment, etc., so his theft of the motorcycle _might_ not have attracted a legal death warrant.

Ok, how many old Army Veterans out there remember driving their tracked vehicles over those road side markers while stationed in Germany? I had a buddy that used to do it on purpose when his TC wasn’t paying attention, lol. And God help you if you do a tight steer maneuver inside a town and chip up a curb, the citizens will hunt you down! To be fair to the Germans, we were extra careful in cities, they always kept their streets clean and beautiful, each person would sweep the section of road and sidewalk in front of their house not because they had to but they took pride in their property which is part of what makes their country amazing to live in.

"During the climactic motorcycle chase in "The Great Escape" (1963), director John Sturges allowed Steve McQueen to ride (in disguise) as one of the pursuing German soldiers, so that in the final sequence, through the magic of editing, he's actually chasing himself. McQueen played the German motorcyclist who hits the wire.
Although McQueen did his own motorcycle riding, there was one stunt he did not perform: the hair-raising five foot jump over a fence. This was done by McQueen's friend Bud Ekins, who was managing a Los Angeles-area motorcycle shop when recruited for the stunt. It was the beginning of a new career for Ekins, as he later doubled for McQueen in "Bullitt" (1968), and did much of the motorcycle riding on "CHiPs."
McQueen's character of Hilts was based on amalgamation of several characters, including Major Dave Jones, a flight commander during Doolittle's Raid who made it to Europe, and was shot down and captured, and Colonel Jerry Sage, who was an O.S.S. Agent in the North African desert when he was captured. Colonel Sage was able to don a flight jacket and pass as a flier, otherwise he would have been executed as a spy. Another inspiration was probably Squadron Leader Eric Foster, who escaped seven times from German prisoner-of-war camps.
During idle periods while this movie was in production, all cast and crew members, from McQueen and James Garner to production assistants, and obscure food service workers, were asked to take thin, five-inch strings of black rubber and knot them around other thin strings of black rubber of enormous length. the plan was to shoot in Hollywood; sent a crew over to assess the scene in Europe: James Garner: "the problem with Germany, is that it looks like Germany"! so location shooting entered the plan.
Growing up, every 12 yr. old boy I knew, including me, had the poster from this scene, in their bedroom.
This reminds me of the time when I was riding in London and I did get busted I had a face quite a few judges i was speeding in London. Air Force was pretty upset with me when I was stationed there at RAF Bentwaters England in Suffolk county.
