    How to install mud in a shower pan for a tile shower stall. When installing a tile shower, whether it be ceramic, marble travertine or any other tile product, a mud base will be required. Mud also known as deck mud, is a mixture of sand and Portland cement mixed to a ratio that will create a solid foundation for the tile which will be installed on it. The deck mud is mixed with water to a dump consistency which will allow the deck mud to hold its shape when pressed into a ball. The mud must be pitcher towards the drain so that a slope of at least 1|4" per foot is achieved. The ratio of sand and Portland cement is usually 4:1 or 5:1. I usually use mapei 4to1 mud mix. The method I employ to install my mud shower pan, is to create a level and flat perimeter around the base of the shower walls which is at the correct height in relation to the drain, and then fill the middle part of the shower pan screeding down to the drain with the proper pitch. In this video I show an easy method to create a level screed using a 1/2" foam board set at the correct height, the foam board screed then makes it very easy to shape the mud down to the drain with varying lengths of screed boards. The mud is shaped with a wooden trowel, steel trowel, level and other pieces of straight wood lengths cut to the required lengths. In this video I demonstrate the technique I use to install a shower mud pan base. There are other methods that can be used, but this is the way I have installed hundreds of shower bases.

    Hello Sal! I do not know if it is a good idea to use a good sealer on my slab deck ruber liner system after it is cured. My idea is avoid a permanantly soaked slab during and after the shower is in service. Or is more convenient the membrane glued on top of slab?

    Great video. Unrelated question: does a tile with a hairline crack, ALWAYS need replacing? I just discovered a hairline crack, in my newly installed work, that does not extend the full width (l to r) of the tile. Its a white tile and while it cannot be seen, it can be felt. Its on the pony wall where the fixed glass (opposite side of door) will silicone to. I guess while I have learned alot from you and built this new shower, I could take my skills to the next level and remove the tile! if necessary!

    Sal, how many bags of the 4 and 1 did you use for this? I’m about to do a 3x5 shower, how many bags do you think I need? By Mapei’s coverage chart it sounds like I need about 5 or so, and that seems like a lot. My depth will go from 1 inch at the Kerdi drain to 1.75 at the perimeter.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  Před 3 lety +1

      Figure you will get about 1/2 cubic foot per bag. so 36x60x1.75=3780
      3780/1728=2.1875 4 bags should do it.
