- Here is a look into a very rare Jo-Han 1974 Hornet Funny Car model kit, plus a look at a resin version copied from a promo. How should I build it?

Great as always bud. I don’t know if you have seen, but Andy at Andy’s hobby hq in Phoenix has tons of old car kits. Maybe you could go check it out if your in the area. Love your builds and knowledge that comes in your buds.👍👍
Thank you. I’m aware of Andy’s purchase and have been to his shop a few times. So far I bought a few parts kits and a Revell Pro Modeler 69 Charger. I needed that one for a comparison kit history video I’m planning. He has had some rare kits but so far nothing that I couldn’t live without. He is still digging through them. I may swing by today and see what else he has dug out.
A really cool kit Raul, I don't remember ever seeing on, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
It really is a shame that Jo-Han no longer exists. Those were such fun kits. Wonder how they would look today if they were still in business.
Personally. I think if they were still around they would be viewed like AMT. Reissuing the same old crap from worn molds! The bodies are great and Just like MPC kits. Great bodies, interiors that are OK but not great and chassis that are not correct. Almost no mirrors and very few details.
JoHan is still around but most of the molds are long gone. Okie Spalding owns the rights to JoHan and has what is left of the tooling. I understand that it is not much and is very difficult to get the licensing to make the ones he can produce. I heard the Ramble Wagon was on its way but cancelled due to licensing issues.
I can't say I've ever heard of a Hornet before??? Thanks for sharing
Cool. Never heard of the AMC Hornet, how about the Hudson Hornet?
Thanks for the video. Cool to see how technology has changed kit building
You bet!
I have built this kit and have two in the box yet! Excellent kit! Wish it would/could be reissued!!
Very cool!
@@TheMuscleCarModeler I've been an AMC Hornet fan for quite awhile. Had three real ones.. Fun cars!!
I used to have that hornet and the other one and I sold them years ago on the Facebook group's and regretted it ever since but now I don't need the money, so I've been slowly buy back all the old johan kits that I have gotten rid of and that's on my list to buy again!
That sucks! But at least you are in a position to collect them all again.
@@TheMuscleCarModeler yes and my latest one was the 442 funny car, Mickey Thompson pinto funny car,and Gene Snow rambunctious challenger funny car.
If you want to keep the Hornet all AMC, you could use the motor from AMT's Gremlin X kit. 😎👍
Thanks. But for some reason I want to hot rod my resin body kit. This original kit I have no real desire to build.
Seeing old kits always takes me back to my childhood and seeing Detroit Michigan on the box hit home thanks for showing. Have you seen luka cee channel on Andy's kits talk about old school overload!
Yes I have! They are also here in Phoenix and his shop is like 8 miles from my house. I have been there but have not found any kits that I must have yet.
@@TheMuscleCarModeler very cool I would love to walk around in the shop and take a look!
It's a cool place. I went back today and picked up a Revell 1967 GTX original issue from 1994 molded in blue. It was $14.99.
That's a nice one!
... WOW... I'll have to look for a model now... As of all things... I bought a running and driving 1973 AMC Hornet Sportabout X, with the Gucci interior, this January of '24 . Liked your clip. Best regards AMC 🇺🇸
Very cool!
That will be cool to see you build that Hornet.
Thanks!
Very cool. The resin body looks great. Ron
Thanks 👍
That’s actually a nice rare kit nice 👍🏻 a drag set up would look real nice
Thanks!
An oldie but , goodie.👍
Yes. It is very cool!
It's a shame it doesn't come stock, my brother had a 74, would love to build him one, great car.
That would be cool!
I always liked Johan kits because they were very accurate in looks. I still have several in my stash, but never did any of their funny cars.
Same here. I build the stock ones but have not built a funny car! I have the 70 Javelin to restore as a funny car and that one will be my first one.
Great looking kit
Thanks 👍
Nice find, and it is a bummer you can’t build a nice stock one. My hobby shop had one, too, but I told him I’d only want the body. Is that part of the now famous Andy Collection? I know Missing Link has a full detail Hornet X resin kit for a while, but they’re not making it anymore, either. Maybe they’ll repop it. Okay, onward to your Corvette!
Thanks! I have Missing Links 71 SC360 kit.
Awesome kit's.
Thank you!
It's great to see these old kits, I remember seeing these things on the hobby shop shelves well into the'90s and still passed them by, I could kick myself for not scooping them up when you could get them for $10, hindsight is 20/20! Kinda makes me wonder about what's on the shelves now being worth a lot of money in just a few years
I know what you mean. I still have a few I bought back then. I still have not built the JoHan 64 Dodge Super Stock that I bought back then. I believe it is the oldest kit I have that I bought new!
Awesome video brother!
Appreciate it!
Would be perfect as a slot car I want one now for my track . Have fun guy
That it would be.
Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure!
Thanks for sharing. I know you don’t usually make funny cars and neither do I, however, I think it would be great to see you make this to replicate the box art.
Thanks!
Very cool!!
Thank you!
Nice kit and review
Thank you!
Your Jo-Han '74 Hornet Funny Car is something I haven't seen in years. Thanks for posting your excellent video too!
Thanks! Flashback for some and a nice view into a rarely seen kit for those who have never seen one!
If you're looking for an idea on how to build the 74,i recommend the car from the 1974 James bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun,it has one of the best stunt scenes i've ever seen!.
Thank you! I have seen that stunt many times!
I have the promo of that car molded in orange I had that kit also but I have no idea what happened to it I still have the box and instructions but that's it, good old Johan gen 1 AMC engine they never updated amt and MPC made a half way decent gen 2 AMC v8, I can't remember what AMC nascar kit had a really good representation of a Edelbrock torker 2 intake.
Thank you! I think you are referring to the AMT 75 Matador. I have not had that kit so I don't know.
@@TheMuscleCarModeler yep that's the one now I remember
Cool .... From Andy's Hobby headquarters?
No. Purchased from my friend Gerry Chevalier in Canada a few weeks back.
@@TheMuscleCarModeler Cool..i guess you have seen those Johan Kit at Andys :)
When you thin your paint do you use enamel thinner or lacquer thinner. I really like your muscle cars with your reviews. Great job
I use a lot of Scale Finishes paint and it does not need to be thinned. When I use Testors enamel I use there enamel thinner. On the clear coat that is Sherwin Williams I use there brand thinner this way I have no problems with chemical reactions. What ever paint you are using use the recommended thinner.
I’ve been thinking about getting one of these, but I don’t want a MIB one, too expensive… I just got a 72 Javelin resin with a Polar Lights funny car kit, rather than a Johan Javelin (was about 1/2 the cost), though if I find a built Javelin I’d buy it to restore… if you know anything about making models into slot cars, I’d love to see a video on that. Thanks for the video!
Do you mind if I share your videos on social media? (Twitter)
Share away! Sorry but I don’t know much on the slot car conversion.
That's awesome I love seeing vintage kits thank you!!!! I can't wait to see what you do with that resin!!!
Thank you! Will see what I do with it when I get the urge to do it!
I am torn between keeping these as collectables or building them. Kits are meant to be built. But with the technology growing with printed resin parts, perhaps these old kits can be rejuvenated soon?
I buy to build and dream about building them. I don’t intend to collect but some I just don’t get to building. Some I loose interest in and then sell them. Then I regret selling them! Uhh you just can’t win!
@@TheMuscleCarModeler OMG! I think you just said what the whole model building community believes!! Every box I pick up in a store goes through the same process of what colors, what options and all the way to how to display. The best mental picture goes home with me. Then I look at the unfinished kits at home, feel guilty for getting a new one. But I think the biggest guilts are the ones I didn't buy and can't find anymore
very interesting video … thanks for taking the time to make and post it!
Thank you!
I have this, at least a mint condition box, instructions, body n Glass and good decals
Plus an attempt with parts such as front n rear end n v8 motor to make stock if you might want to trade for something
Thank you! I wasn't really looking for this kit when It came along at a good price so I got it. I'll build the resin one. I also have a few resin 70 Hornets as well. One of them is Missing Links 70 Hornet SC360! That one I need to build.
where can i get s/c rambler decals
That one I don't know. If you are on Facebook there are groups for decals and people who make them.
Don't own a single JoHan kit, what in your opinion are the best car kits they made? I heard someone in Japan owns all the molds for JoHan.
As far as detail goes I think the Full Detail Chrysler Turbine car is great. I have not built it yet but I do have two of them. They also had a curbside version. The rest of the kits build up fairly nicely that I have done. Truly they are not the best detail kits. As far as the Japan Rumor that one is false and a new one for me. Check out this video on JoHan. czcams.com/video/FA6KvM7YXWc/video.html
The word I heard (read in an article) by the end of Johan employees were taking the molds and selling them for scrap when they weren't getting paid. Hence why some of their kits are gone forever.
Nice! Wanna sell it? : )
Maybe. It’s on eBay and I’m not in any hurry to sell it.
I would'nt be in a hurry either. I looked on Ebay and man do they want the money! LOL!@@TheMuscleCarModeler
Hey let me no if you want them to kits
I sent you another email.
