  • yes, you read that right. Elysse DaVega finally succumbed to the curiosity and tried a language app-- a pretty darn cool one at that! i can honestly say i learned a lot more about what i prefer in an app, but above that, i'm eternally grateful that they gave me the opportunity to say the word Kreuzfahrt. that's always cool. check it out below!

I tried it like a year ago, it was one of the first resources i used when i started learning german. I reached the B2 level on the app, eve though it is not a real B2 it really founded my basis to keep learning by other media, especially on grammar it is very well explained. It is a grat app, y really recommend it too even more if you are starting with german.

Hey Elysse! I started using the premium version of Busuu two weeks ago (for German). All of my exercises have gotten corrections so far. Still, you are right. It does take longer to get corrections because it seems less native German speakers are using the app in comparison to Spanish, English, or Brazilian Portuguese native speakers. Something I found helpful is using the social tab to find exercises done by German natives who are learning Spanish or English. I correct those and add them as friends. Once you have them as friends, you have the option of choosing up to five people on your list to correct your exercise. They have been correcting mine when I send the request, or they return the favor once I've corrected them. It's working so I just keep adding new native German speakers to my friend list lmao 😂

@@elyssespeaks I'm glad! Good luck! I'm actually really enjoying the app so far. There are a few little changes that could help, but overall, I think it's pretty good! I had been looking for something like this where there are short lessons, exercises, and a community interaction/corrections section all in one because I used to use a similar website called Livemocha back in the day when I was learning Portuguese, but it got bought out by Rosetta Stone, and they shut it down -__-

  • @alexdudley4497
    @alexdudley4497 Před 3 lety +58

I have been using Busuu to learn German for around a month or so now, German is the first language I'm learning and Busuu is one of the primary things I'm using.
I'm currently aiming for the A1 test but have already noticed a few things that bug me about this app, One of them being the league and leaderboard system, I'm jumping between my phone and computer at the moment and I'm not so focused on completing with other users to get into a better leaderboard. But, the mobile app is based on a point system where as the website is based on a timed daily goal which I much prefer! to add annoyance, anything I do on the website (which is the same lessons as the app) doesn't count towards my goal on the App!
You can also cheat the goal on the app. By re-doing lessons you get given 15 points for each part completed instead of 5, this isn't something I want to do as I'm only going over lessons in which I feel I'm not 100% on.
Another thing that bugs me is that once you get a question wrong twice, it's gone, it doesn't force you to get the answer correct and I often just forget what I did wrong because the app is already forcing me to move on.
Ok rant over, i just thought i would voice my thoughts, if anyone is looking into getting busuu i do recommend it, it's helped me soooo much but be aware of the few tiny annoying things I've encountered
    Great video btw!

@@dirtybubble557 to be honest i have no been using it much lately mainly due to returning to work and having less time to practice. Most of my german practice is mainly listening now.
Although, I would say that Busuu did help me progress a lot more than duolingo and random youtube videos did. Their course is really nicely laid out and they add to it every couple of weeks giving you more stuff to learn. Their vocab study is also very useful too.
      Hope this helped :)

I´ve started learning german 1 year ago on Duolingo, but it wasn´t helping me at all. Like, they teach first animals and food before teaching you how to say things like "Wie heißt du?" or "Wie geht´s dir?" and that doesn´t make a lot of sense. So I discovered Busuu and bought the premium version, and I think it´s reeeeally worth it. I´ve been doing it for about 8 months now and I am currently going to unit B1. I mean, I consider myself an A1 person in speaking, but I can already understand A2/B1 senteses by reading, and that is really an evolution for me, because as an 14 years old brazilian girl I didn´t even know how to say hello in german when I started 😂
In conlusion, I really like Busuu and it is definitely helping me to build a base for my german, and now that I know how the app works, I think the "weakest" parts of it are the grammar and the speaking, so these are the topics that you have to study by other means also to consolidate better.

A little problem compared to Duolingo - there are only popular languages, and you cannot find there the less popular ones (Latin, Hebrew, Greek, etc.)

I used it for a while and there were two main issues with it:
    1) I'd submit a paragraph or two for an answer and never got a single comment or rating even after several months, my account was verified with a picture, I corrected maybe 400 english submissions, it's not like I wasn't active; maybe it's because I was a beginner but still considering I was paying and it's their biggest selling point, was a let down.
    2) The work plan doesn't do a great job of picking up where you leave off; if you don't use it for a week it still assumes you remembered everything like it was yesterday. That and when new courses are added your overall percentage decreased, I was at 45% of the way to complete their A1 ranking and one day it dropped to 28% it was super demotivating and I ultimately cancelled my subscription.
I really wanted to like their app but it was just too rigid for me, I switched to using anki which has been serving me well ever since

Hey Elysse - nice work on the video!
I also think they are great for French, German, Italian, Spanish and maybe a few others... However when my review of them (which was glowing) started getting lots of views, a lot of people commented that Japanese, Russian, Chinese and Arabic were not so good. I used Arabic for about 3 days and I agree... it teaches a strange mix of MSA and then a kind of made up Arabic that isn't even MSA, plus they assume you know the alphabet already.
For Japanese and Russian I had literally dozens of comments saying that it was not good, and not really a single positive one.
So yeah basically I had made the mistake of expanding my experience from French out to all 12 languages, and it seems like it's only the case for the "Big Euro 4", and maybe a few others like Turkish and Polish... but unfortunately not for all of them.

      Hey Lamont, thanks! :D
That's disappointing to hear, eurocentrism is a repeat offender in a lot of language courses/apps and I wish it would change :/ the resources to do it are definitely there. I plan on getting into Turkish next year so maybe I'll have a chance to see what it's like out of those confines.
