Lyrics
When am I gonna make a living?
It's gonna take a while before I give in.
See the people fussing and thieving.
While the sharks are wheeling and dealing.
Gotta look up and tell yourself,
There's no end to what you can do.
They'll waste your body and soul if you allow them to.
This is time to start believing in yourself.
Put the blame on no one else.
When am I gonna make a living?
It's gonna take a while before I give in.
See the people fussing and stealing.
Too many lies, no one is achieving.
Haven't I told you before,
"We're hungry for a life we can't afford."
There's no end to what you can do.
If you give yourself a chance to prove.
We're hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
We're hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Oh there's no end to what you can do.
They'll waste your body and soul if you allow them to.
Oh start believing in yourself.
Put the blame on no one else.
When am I gonna make a living?.
It's gonna take a while before I give in. Yes it is.
I'm sick and tired of scratching a living.
I am hungry but I'm not gonna give in, no
We're hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we won't give in.
Hungry but we're gonna win.

This was my song in my 20's - and then in my 30's - and again in my 40's - and basically to my mid 50's. Finally at 55 I arrived. I finally made it to the other side of this song in my field of choice. Looking back it was worth every minute of it. Don't Quit! Follow your dream! Make it your living! There's no end to what you can do! The'y 'll waste your body and soul if you allow them too. Start believing in yourself! Put the blame on no one else!
Update: Six years after I arrived at my goal, I'm now at the very TOP of my profession. I say this because if you're still trying, you're not waisting time. You're building knowledge and pressure. When that door finally swings open you'll shoot like a silver rocket to heights you can't yet even imagine. Never say die!
[By the way it's true, it's all about the journey, not the destination. So enjoy it!]
Peace.
WOW THANK U I REALLY JUS GOT ENCOURAGE BY YOUR POST....
Thank you so much, I needed to hear that. I'm 45 and still pushing ahead!
Wow! Thank you!
Robert Bailey awesome!!
Well done. It truly is a great song.
Seriously, this woman is out of this world. Her looks, breath-taking, her music pure and soulfull. All in perfect harmony with her classy and contemporary style.
Oh yes, and what a voice...
I love her
G.J. KOSTER Who asked you?
Honey.
Gotta love her
There never will be another one like her.
This is a social conscious song for us who struggle with every day life to survive
Right. Typically 80's: Very entertaining pop songs with a message of social or pacifist consciousness.
i am unemployed !!!!! sade this my theme song
If she stepped through the camera in 2019 and went to any event or party, she'd still be the most stylish person there (edit: same for 2020) (edit:same in 2021)
her looks are very 80s glam, if you watched Santa Barbara or Bold and the Beautiful, you'll see not all ladies dressed in leather studs and huge shoulder pads.

This song is inspirational. It gives people hope. There’s no limit to what you can do. If no one believes in you, you believe in you. It’s that hunger that keeps us going.
But don't overdose yourself with that HOPE ..it's ok to believe in yourself but you also needs to know what are you capable of

most underrated sade song ever
Still classy after all these years
I love that Sade isn’t a solo artist. The band is named after her. Took me 30 years to realize this.
Yes...It was the same with Nena before she really became solo.
@@milesjohnson5487 Which is sad that they don't recognize the contribution of each member of the band who creates these beautiful and memorable songs as each song is written by all four of them, Paul S. Denman, Stuart Matthewman, Sade Adu, and Andrew Hale. Without the band, there is no Sade!
@@sigbertaltamirano6426 the name of the BAND is actually SWEETBACK; czcams.com/video/IDa24j1RYCw/video.html
her voice, her beauty, her demeanor....... I am a woman myself and I am sitting here mesmerized! How can such a human even exist. What a woman
I agree... a goddess among us mortals.
We're hungry for a life we can't afford
But not going to give in.

Ain't that the truth............................we gotta slow down and listen.
The band were genuinely poor when they wrote this song. About a year later they were all millionaires. They deserved it because the songs were so good.
It’s been thirty years since I have loved this song. It brings me to tears listening to it because it still applies to my life. Life has been horrible. I just thank God for his mercy.
I’m sorry 😞

Yes sadly class has disappeared now . I dont recognise the world from 30 / 40 years ago and it makes me want to weep.

@@jneal21 are you ok?
who’d have thought this was nearly 40 years ago. It’s timeless.
Love seeing London in the 80's with all them old cars.
During an interview from around this time, Sade said that the band wasn’t either professional or polished or some such, and I was shocked because (a) I NEVER detected anything but sophistication and totally inspired music from the band, and (2) if they changed any part of their formula it may not have been quite so magical. That saxophone solo is absolutely galactic!
Sade and the band have said that many times over the years. I think the magic is that core 4 members (Sade, Stuart, Paul, and Andrew) are raw natural talents with little technical “skill”, so they make musical choices that are unusual and simple but effective.
Hungry but we're gonna win!
AMEN!
Yes!!!! I'm going to win!!! We're gonna win!!!! My anthem right now!
This song carries the same vibe as Simply Red's "Money's to Tight to Mention." Fast forward 30 years later, and I'm sure millions of people can still relate. Reagan and Thatcher are gone but the problems just get recycled and are still with us .
Got to get to the core of the corruption - need to get special interest money out of politics. That, and the propaganda-induced division across so many lines, keep us all in bondage.
True 😉

Me too! I went through some rough times in college and this song became my national anthem 🥰😊😊
"See the people fussing and stealing.
Too many lies no one is achieving".
This song is the whole truth nowadays. We sometimes get worried about the rest but they don't really care what happens with oneself. That's why we don't get true achievings and they really do. There's always a life to who wants to improve. ✌
this video looks like its made in this present days because she had a futuristic looks on that era..soo cool

Some things are timeless... Class never goes out of style.
@@mattmillus2281 I guess they are trying to say that here 🤗...Sade's style and music are truly TIMELESS! That's all you need to define her...just 1 word: TIMELESS!
"There's no end to what you can do.
If you give yourself a chance to prove."
I’m here in 2023, asking the same question 😢 but , wow. This is a timeless woman.
me too but I enjoy this question listening to the lyrics.
I've been a fan since Sade's first album. What I love about her (and her band because they're a flawless unit), aside from her obvious, unparalleled beauty, is how she can paint life so eloquently, with great depth, soul and pain, and still wrap it in a simplicity that is crystal-clear truth. Only a gifted talent can do this.
The way she walks towards the camera in that corridor from 1:50 to 1:59 is total badass...like she owns it

Speaking in behalf of all your fans I'm sure , we're glad you didn't give in. You won big time and so did we to be blessed with you and your incredible band.
trina, it's amazing that her band changes, (maybe because of locations) but they are always great!
@@MrFranconn Sade is a solid four man band consisting of Stuart Matthewman on sax and guitars, Andrew Hale on keyboards, Paul S. Denman on bass, and Sade Adu on vocals. They have played and toured as a band together since the beginning. They are in Lovers Live and Bring Me Home tours. However, they do add some members during tours such as the background vocalists, drummer, and guitarist. Sade, the band, will never perform with a different set of band performers.

Johnnie Baylis Happy New Year to you as well! Good health, happiness and great prosperity to you and yours!
words if wisdom, johnnie. words i needed at this particular moment. thank you.
also, pfoaaargh, Sade. what a woman.
Johnnie Baylis clearly you've never lived in Cleveland Ohio.
I have always loved the 80's personal economic struggle songs. Simply Red, Wham!, Sade, Marvin Gaye etc. Oddly enough, their words/lyrics still seem to as true today, as they did back then.
I love the fact that the lyrics were real when they first wrote the song. Sade was living in a squat in a disused house in London.
One of my favorite songs ever. I can't get tired of it.
listen to this everymornin, 7 am

If she was male, they would all call her a genius, she is, forget the gender, just look at the ever rising sublime body of work she has put out, genius, no other word for it.
Every time I walk down the street I imagine I'm Sade in this video
Awww how purifying

80s the BEST, really
I was 16 when this came out in 1984. Never confessed it to my mates of course. I'd rather have bitten my tongue than admit that I thought Sade was so d@mn cool. But in hindsight I am pretty pleased with myself that I was able to recognize this timeless quality.
Beyonce-Miley-Gaga-Carey-Minaj-Madonna are all blah whatever to me! With Sade I get goose bumps and it's music you feel in your soul! Stuart and the band are amazing musicians
well... you"
re right guy!!
That are thru words man.....SADE for ever
I can't disagree with you too much. However, I would remove Madonna from the blah list there, because her first two or three albums in the first half of the eighties were jamming. She deteriorated after that.
I disagree on Beyoncé but agree on the rest :)!
EyesLikeBlues Beyonce is a great pop singer but Sade is the Queen of class while Beyonce usually just shakes her arse
Futuristic song look at what is happening now , convid 19 , lockdown, bills full up , shops closed down , everything going from bad to worse , kids no schools , hard life now . God have mercy .
Takes me back to the 80s .remember the first time I saw her I was stunned by her beautiful looks and utter class,.I bought diamond life as soon as it came out, loved the whole album,,,recently gave all my old records to my son as he’s getting into vinyl, when I visited I told him to put this on and I thought here I am about 40 years listening to my old album again for the first time since the 80s,.,.still played like new….

She is such a rollmodel for our music, that lyrics. Just genius ♥
Still listening in July 2019. I'm her #1 fan.

Who's better sade or chante Moore I'm having a hard time to decide here please help me I'm just wondering there both great but I think I like sade more let me know you're opinion though.
@@dwaynelewis7809 ...why is there a competition? Both are at the top of their craft. Sade's band (Sweetback) adds more flavor. Yet, Chante have a larger octave range. So my answer is... no comparison!
I have never seen this. Many times I am very glad I found youtube. This is one of them. This is the best band. And if any doubt on that, they are certainly the BEST band on stage. They are loyal to one another, and love each other and it shows. The best musicians. They have been a team from the beginning even as some came and left-to denying, they are all the best.
Happy birthday to Sade who was born this day in 1959, the Nigerian born singer from Ibadan from the thriving London fashion scene of the 80's who struck a cord around with world in the 1980s with sultry, soul inspired songs like Your Love Is King, Smooth Operator & this song, always been a head turner because of her stunning looks, there was always a lot more to Sade than her physical features, as she proved with multi platinum selling albums, the worldover
all right - my favour is: Haunt Me

That was... formal.
She's half British not just Nigerian though I thought she was Spanish and European like Iceland , or some Ukraine.
Thanks for the brief bio. Did she do any of her schooling in Nigeria?
Dose Sade ever age?
19 likes for this? Of course she ages. This video is around 33 YEARS old. Of course she has aged since then. Have you seen photo's of her for 2016 (when you posted this)? Not hating on her.. just stating... if you look at her today.... she has indeed aged and noticeably so. She's not ugly... but she's an attractive woman who "looks her age."

MY NO.1 FAVORITE BRITISH NEGRIAN JAZZ SINGER.I JUST LOVE THE MELODY OF THIS SONG
like I said before ( the queen of smooth jazz ) ya know it
The UK had some groups back in the 80s
Hell yesss, my next stop just might be Simply Red. UK putting out some good ones now too.
Tin Tin not just in the 80s. I personally think the UK music industry is by far the best in this world. Even their modern artists still give me hope that music in the 21st century isn't that bad after all.
UK's music is not the best in the world because all they are doing is copying the USA's music we created - they are living off our culture and badd ass music and singing and dancing and everything else, the way all foreign countries live off the USA. Nope - United States is number 1 and there is no competition (but I know in these latter days, the USA's music has been compromised and brought down to a more lower quality level and most of it does not sound as good and I am talking more on black people's style, it is the not the same great quality because black people have been made weak and let others who are jealous of them influence them to compromise).
