@Lindsay You seem to forget that charges can be changed or dropped on further examination.
In view of past events where cops committed murder and weren't even charged, I would not be so sure about cops throwing one of their own under the bus.
As for the million dollar compensation, if the victim gets his justice, it would come out of the council's pocket. But since the cop was off-duty, the police force will claim that this has got nothing to do with them because they can't be held responsible for their employees if they aren't on duty.
Only thing that is left is to start a civil procedure against the cop which will never lead to a million dollar compensation.
I do hope that the cop will get fired without pension, but in reality he will keep his pension, apply for a job with the police in a neighbouring county and things will be like they were before.

I never understand allowing someone to hit your vehicle when you could prevent it. It ups your own insurance eventually as you are high risk even if not at fault. I see why it’s raised, because some people intentionally go for the hit to prove their point. And to top it off after market repairs are never the same nor do they hold up to time as baked on paint jobs etc. why?? Your car fax as well tells the story, who wants to buy a car that was in an accident without knowing more.

12:49 I was in a similar accident a few years back where i was in the cammer's position. Ruled 100% their fault. While i'll agree with you that this might have been avoidable, it doesn't take away from the fact that you are entitled to your lane. The fact the cammer sped up probably caused it to be a much safer crash, preventing a pit manuver/rollover of the other vehicle. While this part is speculation since we have a lack of details, there may have also been cars behind the cammer making a choice between brakes and gas a catch 22.

I saw the SLC PD clip already in 2018 when it happened, and ever since have viewed that PD as one of the most corrupt and despotic departments in the entire world. And later cases (found on the internet) hasn't given me any reason to make the slightest change to that opinion. Are they even educating their cops before issuing a badge and uniform and weapon and every other department parafinalia?
One thing is for sure though. Whenever I get achance to revisit the US, the entire area that is covered by that PD will NOT be on my list of places to visit or just drive through.
On another note, the American mentality of so many people trying to avoid responsibility for their own actions is staggering. I will grant you that the consequences are severe in both money and insurance fees and even legal repercossions, but that is no excuse since they are just as harsch here in Europe And over here, even the usually irresponsible youngsters tend to not make a hit and run or lie to police about it. And the reason is that here, they are informed from an early age that lying to law enforcement and insurance will cost you for the rest of your life in fee's, fines and marks on your criminal record that despite being time limited by law will nevertheless follow you for ever. So, unless there is no surveilance or witness or dashcam at all, most people here will stay and face the music without hesitation. And most will even if there is nothing to tell who they are.
This is not to say that it doesn't happen at all. Of course it does. But compared to the US, offenders trying that per, say, 10.000 capita, is almost unbelievable in comparison. And NOT to the US moral advantage. And that attitude also rubs of on other traffic issues. Road race is also known here. But again, in most cases it is confined to flipping the bird or shouting choice words as you are passing etc. Physical altercations are virtually unheard of when again comparing to the US.
And trying to evade police if pulled over or acting as if the law doesn't apply to us, that litterally IS unknown here, which is also why traffic stops are handled much more efficiently and civil and everybody is on their way again with a minimum of time and fuss.
I used to love the US, but seeing how things have gone south on not only traffic issues, but also on a lot of other issues, I can't help but wonder. WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING TO YOU GUYS??? Where the heck did you make the wrong turn universally within the US?
