They go months or years at a time for some, without contact with family. Then comes the day when it registers, nobody has heard from them for a really long time. No clue where to start looking because you have no idea where they went after you last spoke, just vanished. Makes me wonder if shark bite, fatalities might not be higher than anyone really knows.

That's the second person to be killed around the Morro Bay area by a Great White Shark. Back in 2003, a lady was killed by a Great White Shark in those water's. But she was attacked for not using common sense, because she was swimming with a group of Seal's; and was mistaken for one of them.
Common sense is being smart enough to not risk your life for a bit of temporary fun! LOL Surfing is highly overrated. Life risking adventure activities is not my idea of fun! I'm happy to stay on the beach or hang out by the pool. I feel sorry for the guy but he risked his life just for a bit of fun, gambled and lost. I value my life way too much to put myself at risk like this.
A 50 year old surfer was also attacked by a shark a few years back just 5 or 10 miles south of morro bay as well in Montana de Oro. I think there was also another fatal shark attack in the 60s in Morro Bay while a Cal Poly student was swimming pretty far out.
I knew Tom for less than a year when this happened. Couldn’t believe it when i learned of this. We went on a prospecting trip in the sierras east of Sacramento, where he lived in May of 2021. Really great guy too. He did talk of surfing a couple times a year. I wish he would have stayed here in Alaska. RIP Tom….
This is one of those situation where i feel i cannot blame the surfer, he was just unlucky. We not gonna stop driving just due to fear of accident? But definitely know when your beat in these scenarios and always let your close people know where you're heading when you're alone.

Made me wonder how many out of the multiple times I’ve been in the ocean over the years, was there a shark close by. On another channel, the host told the story of a guy being attacked in four feet of water.
That's Carlos - The Malibu Artist's CZcams channel. His videos are really excellent and I highly recommend them as providing a very different insight into the behaviour of Great Whites - or, at least, that is, juveniles of the species - mere sprats of eight to ten feet , or so. Sadly, it appears that adult White Sharks (16 feet or bigger) have the appetite, hunting skills honed by years of experience, and speed and agility to make the transition from hunting bottom-living rays to seals - and, occasionally (and opportunistically) humans. It does seem probable, however, that contrary to the sensationalist image of G.W.Ss. as portrayed in the 'Jaws' series of films, this species does not habitually regard humans as a primary prey species, preferring, instead, blubber-rich species such as seals. Of course, on this basis, any human 'land whale' clad in a black wetsuit choosing, of their own free will, to go for an invigorating 'dip' in the vicinity of a seal colony would be tantamount to wilful suicide and would unquestionably result in the ensuing Coroner's report on the death as a deservedly justifiable verdict of 'Suicide while the balance of her / his mind was disturbed' !

However, I certainly would no more consider swimming in an area known to be frequented by Great White Sharks than I would choose to go for a walk in any jungle in Northern India known to be the home of tigers, even despite knowing that the likelihood of actually being attacked by a representative of these two species is very rare indeed. Frankly, my conclusion regarding Hal's motivation for producing his videos is that it seems almost diametrically opposed to Carlos's in that the former seems to have a particularly morbid fascination for the potential for human disaster associated with sharks in general and White Sharks specifically. My personal view regarding the latter species - for what it's worth (admittedly not much!) - based on my having watched many of Carlos's videos, is that - of course - White Sharks occasionally visit British coastal waters, but the very fact that there have been no recorded attacks on humans by this species since records began proves that they pose no significant threat to humans; if they did, the beaches of Clacton or Blackpool would prove irrisistable temptations for this species. A far-more-plausible 'Apex predator' shark in the context of the seas around Great Britain would be - seemingly implausibly - the Greenland Shark, which is a major predator of seals in Hardangr Fjord, Norway, as well as seal colonies off the coasts of North West and North East U.S.A. Take a look at the British Channel 4 Nature Shock series episode featuring this species of shark - you'll find it on CZcams - to get an idea of just how potentially dangerous to humans this deceptively slow-moving and 'sleepy' this very large shark (eighteen feet +) is. Interestingly, (in a rather sinister way) there have been a number of reports of seal carcases being washed up on the beaches of the N.E. of England bearing strange vertical deep cuts along their flanks which appear to have been inflicted by boat propellors or steel cables. As the Nature Shock documentary on the Greenland Shark proves, this type of wound is characteristic of how this species strips the blubber from a seal with a highly distinctive sawing,bite. A 15 to 17 ft white isn't unusual, rather upper end of average size for a relatively young female, although sizeable for a male. Even if it were the tagged shark, nothing, could, would or should be done. It's just a risk that ocean users take, and rarely fall foul of 👍

That's Carlos - The Malibu Artist's CZcams channel. His videos are really excellent and I highly recommend them as providing a very different insight into the behaviour of Great Whites - or, at least, that is, juveniles of the species - mere sprats of eight to ten feet , or so.
Sadly, it appears that adult White Sharks (16 feet or bigger) have the appetite, hunting skills honed by years of experience, and speed and agility to make the transition from hunting bottom-living rays to seals - and, occasionally (and opportunistically) humans.
It does seem probable, however, that contrary to the sensationalist image of G.W.Ss. as portrayed in the 'Jaws' series of films, this species does not habitually regard humans as a primary prey species, preferring, instead, blubber-rich species such as seals.
Of course, on this basis, any human 'land whale' clad in a black wetsuit choosing, of their own free will, to go for an invigorating 'dip' in the vicinity of a seal colony would be tantamount to wilful suicide and would unquestionably result in the ensuing Coroner's report on the death as a deservedly justifiable verdict of 'Suicide while the balance of her / his mind was disturbed' !

I have to admit that I very rarely watch Hal's Sharks Happen channel - I suppose not more than 1 in 300,000,000 views of other CZcams channels, I guess.
However, I certainly would no more consider swimming in an area known to be frequented by Great White Sharks than I would choose to go for a walk in any jungle in Northern India known to be the home of tigers, even despite knowing that the likelihood of actually being attacked by a representative of these two species is very rare indeed.
Frankly, my conclusion regarding Hal's motivation for producing his videos is that it seems almost diametrically opposed to Carlos's in that the former seems to have a particularly morbid fascination for the potential for human disaster associated with sharks in general and White Sharks specifically.
My personal view regarding the latter species - for what it's worth (admittedly not much!) - based on my having watched many of Carlos's videos, is that - of course - White Sharks occasionally visit British coastal waters, but the very fact that there have been no recorded attacks on humans by this species since records began proves that they pose no significant threat to humans; if they did, the beaches of Clacton or Blackpool would prove irrisistable temptations for this species.
A far-more-plausible 'Apex predator' shark in the context of the seas around Great Britain would be - seemingly implausibly - the Greenland Shark, which is a major predator of seals in Hardangr Fjord, Norway, as well as seal colonies off the coasts of North West and North East U.S.A.
Take a look at the British Channel 4 Nature Shock series episode featuring this species of shark - you'll find it on CZcams - to get an idea of just how potentially dangerous to humans this deceptively slow-moving and 'sleepy' this very large shark (eighteen feet +) is.
Interestingly, (in a rather sinister way) there have been a number of reports of seal carcases being washed up on the beaches of the N.E. of England bearing strange vertical deep cuts along their flanks which appear to have been inflicted by boat propellors or steel cables.
As the Nature Shock documentary on the Greenland Shark proves, this type of wound is characteristic of how this species strips the blubber from a seal with a highly distinctive sawing,bite.
Of course, Greenland Sharks lack the menacing presence of a White Shark, and no amount of reconstructive surgery by even the most accomplished surgeon specialising in the field of bodily enhancement could possibly elevate this species' image to the point where it would be able to step into Jaws's tail fin.
It's almost tragic when you come to think about it,

@@markmailander3880 there's evidence to the contrary, white sharks may sometimes cooperate or, at the very least, target the same prey item. A 15 to 17 ft white isn't unusual, rather upper end of average size for a relatively young female, although sizeable for a male. Even if it were the tagged shark, nothing, could, would or should be done. It's just a risk that ocean users take, and rarely fall foul of 👍

Common sense is being smart enough to not risk your life for a bit of temporary fun! LOL Surfing is highly overrated. Life risking adventure activities is not my idea of fun! I'm happy to stay on the beach or hang out by the pool. I feel sorry for the guy but he risked his life just for a bit of fun, gambled and lost. I value my life way too much to put myself at risk like this.
